Scott Snyder Announces Departure on SWAMP THING

The writer confirms he's leaving to focus on other projects.

Sad news today. There's been rumblings over Scott Snyder's run on SWAMP THING. Today, via his Twitter, Snyder confirms the bad news.

No Caption Provided
Hey guys - was going to wait until we got a little closer to announce this, but yes, Swamp Thing #18 will be my last issue, and Yanick's too.
To be 100% clear: @YanickPaquette and I have been planning this ending - both an ending for us as creators on the book, and for the storyline we started way back in issue #1 - for a long time. Even before we signed on to do Swampy, we both knew it would be a limited run, as we had other projects in the pipeline we knew would eventually come to pass. But the chance to do Swamp Thing, to bring back a character we've both loved dearly since childhood, was just too thrilling to turn down.

That said, we both ended up staying longer than we'd planned, too, out of love of the character, love for the story we were getting to tell, love for our team, and above all, out of love and gratitude for you guys, the fans who've helped us do something here that many people said was impossible - make Swamp Thing a viable book in the DCU. For that, all of us on team Swampy will be forever grateful to you guys.

Truthfully, these characters are some of my personal favorites in comics, ever - the early issues by@LenWein and @BernieWrightson played a huge part in making me want to write in the first place. Then the fearless work by Moore, Bissette... The thing is, Swamp Thing has always been a series where creators did these crazy things, where they experimented, pushed themselves, imagined big, took risks - and the fact that you guys have supported our team, as we've tried our own crazy ideas on the book, story-wise, artistically.... it really means the world to us. It's been a tremendous honor to write this book. And to have worked on it alongside friends like the art team - and one of my best friends in the world, and one of mu writing idols, @JeffLemire... Don't know how to thank you all for giving me the opportunity.

Anyway, all this sounds so fucking sad, BUT - please know that these issues coming up next are the big ones - the status-quo-changing-mega-ones :) - that we've been building towards since issue #1. So the best is still coming, with the finale of Rotworld and our shocking storyline ending in Swampy #18.
After that, Swampy will continue with an exciting new team, to be announced soon. Please give them the love and support you've shown us. They certainly have our blessing.

Again everyone, can't thank you all enough for this one. You guys made this gig a dream come true in every way, corny as that sounds. I thank you, team Swampy thanks you - and from deep in the swamp, Alec Holland, Abby Arcane, The Parliament, even Uncle Anton thanks you, too.
== TEASER ==

He mentioned that this is what they've been building up to since the first issue. Snyder's been putting off his creator-owned THE WAKE to stay on SWAMP THING. He also says he'd rather give a someone else a chance rather than "give him 90% of what I can do."

No Caption Provided

Hopefully Snyder had a say in who replaces him.

Here's the solicit to issue #18:

Synder's Swamp Thing is one of the best damn books I've ever read. This is sad news.

I suppose it's better for something to end at it's peak than to die slowly.

This is the second biggest mistake DC has made this year (firing Gail Simone is the first)! With this move, DC will ensure that Swamp Thing will be cancelled within a few issues. Snyder is the first writer since Alan Moore to understand this character and write it well. DC should have done everything in its power to ensure that Snyder would remain on this title. I believe Snyder could handle 4 titles easily but I think he wants and deserves a bump up in pay! Come on DC, ante up and keep this great writer on a title he was meant to write!!

Sad but understandable obviously. Even awesome writing geniuses have their limits, and in all honesty I'd rather have Snyder kick consistent @$$ on 3 books than to do only a mediocre job on more. Besides, I'm ready for his Man of Steel already so I say full steam ahead, Snyder!

I knew this was coming. 3 books is more than enough for a writer like Snyder and since Superman and Batman are my favourites I kind of prefer Snyder to finish Swamp Thing so he can focus on them lol.

@Billy Batson: How long is Diggle going to be on the title for? I'd have thought 18 issues would be a long enough run. That's how long Morrison's been with Action Comics if you count the 0 issue.

That may be the last Swamp Thing I buy, then. I've been looking to shorten my pull list and with one of my favorite writers leaving, I may leave it also.

Not anything bad about the new team, but Marvel NOW has some great looking titles coming up and their crappy release schedule makes my months a lot more expensive.

He's working on Batman, Swamp Thing, American Vampire + next year he'll be writing Man of Steel and The Wake. He's involved in James Tynion IV's Talon as well. I think AmVamp has already been put on hiatus, but even then I think it was reasonable to expect that Snyder would be dropping another title, you can only put out so much stuff every month.

This.

I'm more interested about writers who are planning to have a long run instead of 18 issues or less. That's why I'm going to get AC when Diggle comes on board (besides being more into Diggle than Morrison).

Hopefully China Meville will get to write Swamp Thing.

This makes me sad. Snyder is one of the best writters out there. My favorite right now, but I'm glad he knows his limits. I will give a try to the new creative team.

Sad news this day, first Simone gets fired from Batgirl. And now this.

Also, time to get American Vampire in TPS!!! And I will as well looking after his others projects.

On the one hand, "Nooooooooooo!" Snyder is such a great writer, and the way he and Lemire have tied Swamp Thing and Animal Man together in this Rotworld arc has been brilliant. I don't know if I'll stick with either book after the changeover. On the other hand, I'd gladly keep picking it up if the next arc is as wonderful. And if this means Snyder can do for Superman what he's been doing on all his other books, I might start reading those books as well. A mixed blessing, but I'm excited to see what comes of it, and Snyder is the one person in the DCnU that I trust almost completely (sorry Grant Morrison).

but I can't imagine who DC is going to put on this title. I feel like writers have been dropping like flies from DC lately with all the changes.

Who do you think the new author will be? Simone?

yeah, but this is not like those other cases, Snyder's run is not being cut short it just ended, and he did it to write Superman, not a bad deal.

and no, it wont be Simone, the rumors say that it will be someone from Image who generally does creator own book

At least the series is going to be a complete story. I often find hard to buy trade paperbacks (yes sorry i don't read this book on a monthly basis, which I should) when the story is not finished since the creative team changes. In fact, sometimes I won't event buy a book. There's so many great series out there, why put your money on something that's not finished.

This bums me the hell out... At least Lemire is staying on Animal Man for the foreseeable future. I'll definitely be waiting to see who the new creative team on the book is before dropping it, but I might drop it in favor of JLD or Green Arrow.
