Scott Snyder Announces Departure on SWAMP THING

The writer confirms he's leaving to focus on other projects.

Sad news today. There's been rumblings over Scott Snyder's run on SWAMP THING. Today, via his Twitter, Snyder confirms the bad news.

Hey guys - was going to wait until we got a little closer to announce this, but yes, Swamp Thing #18 will be my last issue, and Yanick's too.
To be 100% clear: @YanickPaquette and I have been planning this ending - both an ending for us as creators on the book, and for the storyline we started way back in issue #1 - for a long time. Even before we signed on to do Swampy, we both knew it would be a limited run, as we had other projects in the pipeline we knew would eventually come to pass. But the chance to do Swamp Thing, to bring back a character we've both loved dearly since childhood, was just too thrilling to turn down.

That said, we both ended up staying longer than we'd planned, too, out of love of the character, love for the story we were getting to tell, love for our team, and above all, out of love and gratitude for you guys, the fans who've helped us do something here that many people said was impossible - make Swamp Thing a viable book in the DCU. For that, all of us on team Swampy will be forever grateful to you guys.

Truthfully, these characters are some of my personal favorites in comics, ever - the early issues by@LenWein and @BernieWrightson played a huge part in making me want to write in the first place. Then the fearless work by Moore, Bissette... The thing is, Swamp Thing has always been a series where creators did these crazy things, where they experimented, pushed themselves, imagined big, took risks - and the fact that you guys have supported our team, as we've tried our own crazy ideas on the book, story-wise, artistically.... it really means the world to us. It's been a tremendous honor to write this book. And to have worked on it alongside friends like the art team - and one of my best friends in the world, and one of mu writing idols, @JeffLemire... Don't know how to thank you all for giving me the opportunity.

Anyway, all this sounds so fucking sad, BUT - please know that these issues coming up next are the big ones - the status-quo-changing-mega-ones :) - that we've been building towards since issue #1. So the best is still coming, with the finale of Rotworld and our shocking storyline ending in Swampy #18.
After that, Swampy will continue with an exciting new team, to be announced soon. Please give them the love and support you've shown us. They certainly have our blessing.

Again everyone, can't thank you all enough for this one. You guys made this gig a dream come true in every way, corny as that sounds. I thank you, team Swampy thanks you - and from deep in the swamp, Alec Holland, Abby Arcane, The Parliament, even Uncle Anton thanks you, too.
== TEASER ==

He mentioned that this is what they've been building up to since the first issue. Snyder's been putting off his creator-owned THE WAKE to stay on SWAMP THING. He also says he'd rather give a someone else a chance rather than "give him 90% of what I can do."

Hopefully Snyder had a say in who replaces him.

Here's the solicit to issue #18:

Is there an article for Gail Simone leaving Batgirl?

Also, I enjoyed Swamp Thing more than Batman, so I'm sad about this.

Oh. Seems kinda weird that CV doesn't have a article on the main page about Gail being fired off of Batgirl.

With his new Superman series coming up, it was pretty clear that he was going to leave something. And with Batman being one of the highest selling books that DC has, it was also pretty clear that he wouldn't be leaving that.

I just hope they hand it to a writer who knows what he's doing. The writer of I, Vampire might be able to do well.

I truly appricate when artist keep thier limits. So much beeter to get the quality from someone I follow, then to get forced or water downed work from talented people. Yup will miss the them on Swamp Thing. But will pick up whatever he does next. Quailty is always better than quanity in creative matters.

So sad to hear this :(

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Welp, I guess I'm dropping Swamp Thing pretty soon. :'(

It is a shame. I wonder who will they will get to replace him. China Miéville is a possibility as he was meant to write the series when it was still at Vertigo.

Why must all good things come to an end?

DC better bring in a writer that can do that series, and that character justice.

Posted by Video_Martian

TBH, this isn't TOTALLY bad news, IMO. I kinda wanna see what other writers have got planned for Swamp Thing...

Posted by kennybaese

This bums me the hell out... At least Lemire is staying on Animal Man for the foreseeable future. I'll definitely be waiting to see who the new creative team on the book is before dropping it, but I might drop it in favor of JLD or Green Arrow.

Posted by kingjoeg

You will be missed Scott Snyder, probably will drop this when he leaves.

Posted by iaconpoint

Sad day but I'll wait to see who replaces him before I drop this book. Hopefully they can get an artist who can work a regular monthly schedule as well. I gotta say, I think it's cool that Scott knows his limits and keeps his stuff at 3 books a month. Quality, NOT quantity.

Posted by longbowhunter

Upsetting. Wonder who will take over the title?

This would be great news!

Sad day...but can't wait for the Wake! Interested to see who take over though.

I was about to jump into this book after the end of the current arc. Maybe I will just read the old issues on Comixology.

ha sales will definitively go down with this book.

Not being negative, just being realistic.

But i can see how stressful it would be for snyder having writing more than 3 titles MONTHLY! YIKES!

But i am SOO excited to read Snyder's take on superman

Posted by MadeinBangladesh

Damn first Simone from Batgirl leaves and now Scott Snyder. How the new writert is jsut as good. Gotta like Scott's mott. Too many books might tone done his amazing storytelling quility.

well, that actually would depend of the writer who takes the book in but it is most likely that it will lost in sales

At least Snyder told the story that he wanted to tell

Shame, not a Swamp Thing reader but I've always heard good things about this. Going to be another one to buy list I think.

Why the heck are people saying they're gonna drop this when he leaves? At least TRY the new writer first, same goes for Morrison and AC.
Posted by SandMan_

Bring on Superman.

Posted by cc1738

This is good and bad. It's bad because he's a leaving the series. But it's good because you don't have to spend an arm and a leg in order to get his entire run on the title.

Posted by Jonny_Anonymous

Well that's Swamp Thing dead in the water, yet another non-A-list character doesn't make the cut and The Dark corner of the DCnU shrinks again

and Swamp Thing is now off my pull

the next team to work on this have some big shoes to fill. this has been one of my favorite arcs of all the DC books i get and one of all time favorite character and i will dare say that is run is second only to alan moores run on swamp thing.

Posted by -The Renegade-

At least the series is going to be a complete story. I often find hard to buy trade paperbacks (yes sorry i don't read this book on a monthly basis, which I should) when the story is not finished since the creative team changes. In fact, sometimes I won't event buy a book. There's so many great series out there, why put your money on something that's not finished.

If I hear good things from other fans I'll hop back

but I can't imagine who DC is going to put on this title. I feel like writers have been dropping like flies from DC lately with all the changes.

Who do you think the new author will be? Simone?

Posted by dreamfall31

Aparrently most everyone here only reads anything because Scott Snyder is writing it...I love the guy's work too, but just because he isn't writing something anymore doesn't mean it's going to be bad from then on.

yeah, but this is not like those other cases, Snyder's run is not being cut short it just ended, and he did it to write Superman, not a bad deal.

and no, it wont be Simone, the rumors say that it will be someone from Image who generally does creator own book

Sad news, loving Swamp Thing so far.

On the one hand, "Nooooooooooo!" Snyder is such a great writer, and the way he and Lemire have tied Swamp Thing and Animal Man together in this Rotworld arc has been brilliant. I don't know if I'll stick with either book after the changeover. On the other hand, I'd gladly keep picking it up if the next arc is as wonderful. And if this means Snyder can do for Superman what he's been doing on all his other books, I might start reading those books as well. A mixed blessing, but I'm excited to see what comes of it, and Snyder is the one person in the DCnU that I trust almost completely (sorry Grant Morrison).

Posted by MizariSeth

This makes me sad. Snyder is one of the best writters out there. My favorite right now, but I'm glad he knows his limits. I will give a try to the new creative team.

Sad news this day, first Simone gets fired from Batgirl. And now this.

Also, time to get American Vampire in TPS!!! And I will as well looking after his others projects.

I know its probably not going to happen but a superman/ batman crossover arc would be awesome

Posted by bunkerbuster05

This is so sad. Good luck DC, you'll need someone GREAT to take over for Snyder.

No!!!!!

I like how many saw this coming, lol.

This.

I'm more interested about writers who are planning to have a long run instead of 18 issues or less. That's why I'm going to get AC when Diggle comes on board (besides being more into Diggle than Morrison).

Hopefully China Meville will get to write Swamp Thing.

He's working on Batman, Swamp Thing, American Vampire + next year he'll be writing Man of Steel and The Wake. He's involved in James Tynion IV's Talon as well. I think AmVamp has already been put on hiatus, but even then I think it was reasonable to expect that Snyder would be dropping another title, you can only put out so much stuff every month.

Posted by Or35ti

I hope they release an Ultimate Collection kind of thing for Snyder and Paquette's run. I'm excited for his Superman series as well.

Posted by jaytiz27

I'm gutted

Edited by G_Money_Christmas

That may be the last Swamp Thing I buy, then. I've been looking to shorten my pull list and with one of my favorite writers leaving, I may leave it also.

Not anything bad about the new team, but Marvel NOW has some great looking titles coming up and their crappy release schedule makes my months a lot more expensive.

Posted by jwalser3

So i guess after #18 I'll probably drop this.
