Scott Pilgrim Video Game Will Rock Your Socks Off

It really is on like Donkey Kong, now.

This is how all rock shows should be.
This is how all rock shows should be.

I really need to pick up Oni’s SCOTT PILGRIM trades. Out of all of 2010’s comics-based movies, it’s SCOTT PILGRIM VS. THE WORLD that I’ve been most excited about. The trailers have been awesome, of course. They've seized the interest of plenty of my non-comics reading friends. Me, I’m just eager to see what looks like such an imaginative hodgepodge of pop culture, such a boisterous bedlam of comics, manga, rock and old school gaming.

It’s that last ingredient  that’s the most relevant, presently. If any story ever necessitated a video game, that has absolutely demanded one with burning eyes, its SCOTT PILGRIM.  Fans will pleased to know that it stick pretty close to the comics (according to Game Informer’s hands-on review.) It’s a 2D, side-scrolling beat ‘em up in the black-and-blue-but-still-butt-kicking tradition of FINAL FIGHT and the NINJA TURTLES arcade games. Players will get to command Pilgrim and his friends as they fight through throngs of ninjas and thugs to take on his girlfriend Ramona’s evil ex’s for some absurd boss battles. One of said absurd  boss fights consist a “battle of the electric basses” in the style of GUITAR HERO. That goes to show that they're being real creative with this one - - it definitely isn't just some quick 'n dirty cash-in.  == TEASER ==

The game’s going to be available for download on the Play Station Network in August (which is, coincidentally, right around the release of the movie) and then Xbox Live at some point after that. Surprisingly, there’s no online multiplayer.

Another thing I’ll say that’s so thrilling about adaptations is getting to see great talents riffing off each other's work. I’m already a fan of Edgar Wright’s, for one, so it’s a trip to see him put his spin on Bryan Lee O’Malley’s already-distinctive work. Similarly, it’s cool to see Paul Robertson handling the art direction on this. If it’s anything like this other game he produced (trailer below,) then this is going to be some sensational sprite-based gameplay.

What do you Comic Vine maniacs think? Will you be downloading this come August?
