Scott Lobdell Leaves the HOOD

It's time for goodbyes and hellos and RED HOOD AND THE OUTLAWS gets a new writer.

It is with a heavy heart that I have to announce RED HOOD AND THE OUTLAWS #18 will be my last issue of the series.

No Caption Provided

As much as I love Jason, Roy and Kori, my schedule is such that something had to give and that something was Red Hood.

Despite all the hoopla and tearing at clothing that greeted the launch of the series (or heck, maybe because of it!) I have never been more proud of my association with launching a title as I have with this book. Love it or loath it, RED HOOD AND THE OUTLAWS has always had a unique voice, tone, pacing and -- thanks for the incomparable Kenneth Rocafort and Blond, its own look.

Am I going to be sad that I don't get to write Jason as he picks up the pieces of his life in the aftermath of Death of the Family? Yes! Do I weep that I didn't get to explore Roy's upbringing on the Navajo reservation and how he eventually wound up with Outlaw status? Absolutely! Do I already regret I won't be around to watch Starfire deal with the arrival of her sister on Earth and what it means to the fate of the mysterious 13? More than words can say!

I'm going to miss Ducra and the All-Caste and Isabel and Essence and DePalo and Orn and K'tten and especially Crux... and, of course, the inevitable return of Suzie Su!

But here are two pieces of good news to help alleviate our mutual sorrow.

First, the last two issues of RED HOOD AND THE OUTLAWS I've written (issues #17 and #18) are two of my most favorite, most emotional stories I've written not only of the series... but of my entire career! As exits go, I could not have asked for a more grand good-bye! If feels like the perfect place to say my good-bye.

No Caption Provided

Secondly, I'm leaving you in the more than capable hands of James Tynion! As anyone who has been following his Batman back-ups and his Talon launch knows James is an exciting young writer with talent way beyond his years. I can't wait to pick up RED HOOD AND THE OUTLAWS #19 and see where he is going with the series!

Before I go I want to thank Judd and Mort and George and Denny and Neal and Marv and George for their hands in creating RED HOOD AND THE OUTLAWS to begin with. And of course Bobbie and Katie and Eddie and Darren in editorial, and Kenneth, Blond, Timothy and Pascal and both Pascals for everything else. To Tumblr, for keeping me honest with all their thoughtful criticism and insight into all that is best in humanity. And finally, to Mike DePalo for his unwavering assistance, expertise and friendship.

Go Hoodies! The best is yet to come!

First of all, how many of you fans that have commented here read through whole runs of comics, whithout experiencing a creative ohandover? Hmmm? Man up people, if you like the character, then read this book. The prescence of a fan favourite writher on a comic should come secondly on the terms of why you read these issues. Granted some of you have diffent and equally valid reasons, but I doubt you would have read them if you did'nt like the featured characters. Show some appreciation that its been taken over by an equally good writer, keep this book alive, it brings a fresh theme to the ever growing source of team books. I have the faith that Tynion will keep this title as consistently good as Lobdell did.

Tynion is leagues ahead of Lobdell. This is a good thing.

Very true. I've wanted to pick this book up since the start and now I have the best reason to.

I'd prefer if he left teen titans cause I'm not a fan of his work there and to me its been terrible. It's not really a good thing that he's leaving red hood and the outlaws cause that's his best performing title right now.

That's my only concern. That and appreciation for the great job Lobdell's done. Tynion's a good writer however so I expect him to handle it well.

I'm looking forward to the change-up. While Lobdell has done a good job, not great (IMO), some new writing could be just what the series needs. It has lost a bit of its focus. I thought the first storyline involving Jason and the Untitled was a nice way to bring in the characters and help shed some light on Jaybird's new backstory. I understand that they had to move away from that plot to shed light on the other characters' pasts, but they did it in such a way that it felt like they handwaved it off. Plus, the Tamaran war story felt rushed to me. I never really cared what was happening and it ended kind of abruptly. I look forward to seeing what Tynion brings to the table. Doesn't hurt that he was mentored by Scott Snyder, either.

So, I just picked up and read the first RHatO TPB and really enjoyed it, and my initial plan was to catch up and put this on my pull list. Seems like now I may just want to wait until the other trades come out to finish out Lobdell's arc, and wait to see how people are receiving Tynion's approach.

QUESTION: is it likely that the remainder of Lobdell's run will be collected in a Vol. 3 (Vol. 2 comes out in August, I believe)? Or is the tie-in to DotF likely to throw a wrench in that neatness?

then again, only some people complaint about it. general consensus is that people are unhappy after defalco took over.

I actually stopped reading a couple issues after the switch, so I wouldn't know to much about DeFalco's run.

In retrospect, I think it's a bit unfairly criticized. That is not to say that it is any good, and I am excited to see someone new writing for it
