Rumor Time: Fables Movie?

Would a movie based on Fables work?

According to Pajiba, David Yates, who is directing the final two Harry Potter films, will be directing an adaptation of the Bill Willingham book Fables. About a year and a half ago, we reported that Fables would be made into a television series, which was later shot down as nothing more than rumor. And although Pajiba reports that this indeed is a rumor, they also state that they've received some convincing evidence that warrants this rumor with some actual credibility.
Fables is a book from Vertigo that debuted in 2002, and it takes all the fictional characters from stories many of us grew up with and it puts them all into the real world, mainly New York. The book is not child friendly however. The book will soon be coming to it's 100th issue in the main series, and there are a few spin-offs also. It is undoubtedly one of Vertigo's most popular books.

As for a film based on the book Fables, would it actually work? Like many Vertigo books, Fables is based in a very large world, as many comic are, filled with their own characters, stories, and out-of-the-ordinary elements that we would not find in "the real world." Taking all of these elements and cramming them into a 2-hour feature, if they're lucky enough to have that long of a film, can be quite a daunting task.
You could take a singular story, or a six-issue arc, combine that with introduction to the world and make it into a decent film, but more realistically, this would work better as either a television mini-series, or ongoing series in the vein of what AMC is doing with Walking Dead. Sometimes, like with the Hellblazer film AKA Constantine, it felt like they were trying to fit way to much into a short amount of time, and that's why a television series would feel a bit more natural for a world as large as the Fables world. What do you think? Would a Fables movie work, or would a television show be better suited to this book?

Maybe it would work.

While it would be neat to see some type of adaptation into either film or TV, I think it "Fables" should be left alone and be enjoyed for what it is in print form.
Unless Guillermo Del Toro got involved, then I'd be far more receptive to a film.

If I had my choice I'd like to see Fables as a series on Showtime or HBO so they could go all out.

A movie would work as long as they kept it limited to single story arcs though.

Either way, can't wait to get me some live action Fables.

A complex series such as this or Y the Last Man needs TV treatment. Movies are too prone to skipping over subplots and avoiding secondary characters.

Oh sweet Lord no.  Please do not try and make a movie out of this

I am scared.. LoEG was bad when it was turned to LXG.... Fables being public domain can fall into the same random non-true to the comic adaptation.

Good gravy this is awesome. And if it sucks, I'll just ignore it.

I'd watch it if there was a good script

Fables is an epic series as it is, if it were to go to tv it would have to be, much as it pains me to say so (because I dont get these channels), HBO or Showtime in order to do it proper justice, you can take almost any of the story arcs and transfer them to the big screen for a movie too.  So long as they have a good script (and probably the writers tagging along) this could be wonderful.

"Jack of Fables" might work better. I could see the first arc as a movie easily.
Mmmm... live action Page sisters...

To be honest I would perfer a Fables TV series rather than a movie... but I'll take what I can get!

I would also prefer a fables tv show. A movie just could not hold the pure amounts of awesome that fables is. It also would take a bit to get to the good stuff the first trades are okay it's when you get a lot of it that the comic at least to me become amazing.

I care about this comic so much more than any other comic , book or even movie so I say no please no if they had to tho a large scale showtime might work but even then id freak out if fables became all trendy and honestly would like it left alone again if they had to perhaps a jack of fables wouldn't b to painfull to see them try and do plus would b much more realistic even as a movie if its done correctly and not all retarded but still would b best on showtime or hbo done right

A TV series would of course be by far the best, but I think a movie could work if it told the original first story with Bigby, Snow and the murder of Rose Red. That was a fairly contained story with distinctive leads and a good plot and resolution.
