Root For The Bad Guy: Spot

There are some villains that are so bad that they get no respect (and often don't deserve any).

Everyone loves a cool villain. There are many in comics such as Joker, Norman Osborn, Lex Luthor, etc. For every 'great' villain, there are loads that don't quite have what it takes to achieve true villain status. We figured we'd start a monthly feature to spotlight some of the weaker villains that could someday rise above the odds and achieve a place in the Supervillain Hall of Fame. But most likely they will continue to be an embarrassment.

Today, let's take a look at SPOT.

No Caption Provided

The first problem is the name. Coming up with a name if you're a hero or villain can be tough. Coming up with a really cool name is even tougher. Based on his intelligence, you would think he could've come up with a better name. During his first encounter with Spider-Man, Spidey couldn't stop laughing at his name.

== TEASER ==

What is his story?

Johnathon Ohnn was a scientist working for Kingpin. He was working on helping Kingpin create another super-powered henchman after the Answer disappeared. During a fight with Cloak and Dagger (and Spider-Man and Black Cat), Ohnn managed to get a reading on Cloak's powers. Kingpin was hoping for some information on Dagger's powers as her light powers could help his dying wife Vanessa. Kingpin wasn't too interested as his mind was on his wife. Ohnn continued to investigate. As the radiation energy was being reproduced, a giant black hole appeared.

Being a scientist and having an inquisitive mind, Ohnn had to investigate. He also wasn't sure if he'd be able to reproduce the circle. Stepping in, he immediately felt coldness and once transported to another dimension, passed out.

He finally awoke and found a familiar grouping of spots. Making his way towards them, he went through and emerged back in his lab, covered in spots.

This is where he showed his true...spots. First of all, working for the Kingpin didn't say much for his ethics. But rather than try to figure out how the power could be used for good, he decided it would be best to test out the powers against one of Kingpin's enemies before telling him or anyone. This lead to him encountering both Spider-Man and Black Cat.

Spot was off to a great start. Removing the spots from his body, he had portals all over the place. This allowed him to be able to punch Spider-Man while keeping his distance from him. If Spider-Man did get close enough to try to hit him, he would swing into a hole. Unfortunately he kept removing more and more spots.

No Caption Provided

One punch and he was ready to run away. You have to remember, Spot didn't set out to be a supervillain. As a scientist, he was curious about harnessing the power. He was working for Kingpin but once he gained the power, he had thoughts of using it for himself to further his own research. Soon he changed his tune and did sink to petty theft.

Spot later formed a team with Grizzly, Gibbon and Kangaroo. Going under the name of the Spider-Man Revenge Squad, they very quickly became known as the Legion of Losers.

No Caption Provided

With the type of power at his disposal, you would think he could make something out of himself. If he was interested in money, he could easily use his spots to teleport into restricted areas. Of course he'd have to find a way to leave a spot behind so he could enter the location later.

He continued his attempts at being a villain and was even part of MODOK's 11. When his son was put in a coma as a result of a drive-by shooting, he began killing members of the Russian mafia. He recently showed up in the pages of DAREDEVIL hired to kidnap another mafia member's daughter. Again, he demonstrated his willingness to kill.

This could have been the beginning of a more deadly Spot. One that could be taken a little more seriously. But of course, he was easily defeated by Daredevil, made to look like a fool and left for the authorities.

No Caption Provided

Is there any hope for Spot? Would a new name improve his standing as a supervillain? Will he always be just a villain to be made fun of? There is some potential in him. He could use his powers in interesting ways and has shown signs of being deadly. But he's just lacking that edge that could push him higher in the ranks of great supervillains.

Portal would be a decent name... I agree, he would make a better slapstick hero though...

Portal is definitely a better name than Spot. But I think just making him a better hand to hand fighter and giving him some new motivation would work wonders for him. I also agree he could be a better hero, but it all depends on the direction of the story. The Ultimate Spot looks like a badass and is how he should look/act in the 616...

Like there is potential in every hero to become the next big thing, so does the villains...like take Dr. Light for example, considered the butt of jokes for two decades before being turned into a monster.

The Spot is my favorite lame super-villain. He has so much potential, but he just can't seem to make them work against experienced superheroes. He has a great design and I hope he continues to pop up every once in a while in the Marvel universe. As for his appearance in the Spider-Man cartoon, it definitely shows a way in which the character can be taken seriously as a hero and/or villain and is a fun episode besides.

I like the book, but I was a little confused about the direction of making Spot a clown and jobber again in Daredevil. A part you didn't touch on much is that Spot was returned and displayed as a competent and deadly threat in Marked, then followed in Dark Reign: Mr.Negative. It seems sort of a waste for them to get serious with him then turn around and toss that development out. They had done a really good job at making him into the kind of threat he should be. And I get it's Daredevil and what his level of skill is, but measuring that against how capable Spot was in his previous revival it doesn't work out that he would be taken down that simply. It would be like if they threw out Rhino's recent development in 617/625. I think Spots name and even visual work too, it's more a matter of how it's handled. In his initial appearance they made it silly, and therefore lead the reader to think the same. In his aforementioned returns however they took him seriously, and used the visual in a more bizarre/creepy/fetish manner, and really if you don't take your work seriously, neither does your audience? The name is fine, it's like Cloak. It directly says what his power is and what the threat coming from him is. The costume was silly in design but they've shown they can work with it. It reminds me of Zero from X-Force. Not really a lot going on there either, yet, maybe every villain doesn't need a flowing cape, spikes, or to be donned in black leather to make them a villain?

Spot could be an amazing villain. He's uniquely powerful and just a little crazy. He deserves a lot more love.

But I agree that Spot would make a better hero.

@The Hooded Hero: Or at the very least, a pretty good anti-hero. he's shown he's willing to take a life, but those were the lives of crimminals who put his son in a coma! So he's not some evil monster but he's still capable of killing when pushed far enough! So I can picture him being somebody who can come in handy for our heroes, but they have some choice words for him whenever he goes too far...

The Spot is a pretty lame villain, originally, but when he returned in a recent issue of Spidey (I'd say a year or two ok) he was all sorts of bad ass. His costume is horrible, his name is stupid, but the power set is excellent. I mean who wouldn't want to place a spot in a bank vault and just jump in after hours and then out with no one being the wiser. Or mailing spots to people and throwing hand grenades through. Spot would be an awesome assassin.

I remember him from the 90s Spidey animated series and I thought he was pretty cool. I don't really see the problem with the name but whatever I guess. He just needs a really great story to propel him to a higher level.

This is the absolute truth. Some of Spot's appearances have been downright horrifying. They took his usual look and made it decidedly alien and bizarre. Having a foe that disturbs can be just as striking as one that's iconic. Add to that how over powering his abilities have the potential to be and he's a scary foe if treated right. I adamantly believe there is no such thing as bad characters, but rather bad approaches to characters by writers.

The Spot is awesome, I covered this in my blog, he needs more respect, and would definately work as a hero/vigilante, but does as a villain as well.

Man, I haven't thought about this guy in years. Although when I think back on the comics when I started collecting, the cover of his first appearance sticks in my head. I don't remember thinking of the character as lame, but his name was definitely forgettable. Never thought he'd still be around, though. He'd really have to be more defined to be a continuing character. I'm sure there's some unexplored areas of the Darkforce dimension that could be interesting.

1. He made Spider-Man punch himself in the face. who else has done that

2. I like the cartoon episode he was in it was entertaining

he may be be a wacky badguy but the idea is clever. It's better than spidey fighting another ZooCrew reject.

This is actually a good thing. This could sorta make him an iconic villain if you look at it from my point of view. A character who is in fact neglected and teased in the comics itself could be used to establish a cliffhanger or a suspenseful situation. Basically, he is a character to look and laugh at but the same anger drive that drove spider man could drive him from becoming a laughing stock to a more serious, misunderstood kinda villain and could possibly surprise everyone. Or just leave it be and let him be puny it makes the comic universe more diverse I guess. @kfhrfdu_89_76k: yeah try Spotz or the Black Spot.

Like what he's doing now. Looks like Marvel took advice:

"Is there any hope for Spot? Would a new name improve his standing as a supervillain? Will he always be just a villain to be made fun of? There is some potential in him. He could use his powers in interesting ways and has shown signs of being deadly. But he's just lacking that edge that could push him higher in the ranks of great supervillains."
