Robert Downey Jr. Will Return As Iron Man

Fear not! The charismatic actor will remain as Tony Stark... but for how many films?

There were some concerns over Robert Downey Jr. potentially not signing a new contract with Marvel Studios and, seeing as he's been doing a superb job with his role, that would suck quite a lot. Luckily, that's not the case and the actor has signed a two-picture agreement with the studio. He'll reprise the role in Marvel's The Avengers 2 and Marvel's The Avengers 3. No word on any other films, though, so that could mean Marvel Studios is happy with Iron Man's solo adventure ending as a trilogy and, in turn, this would grant other characters more time to shine. And as you likely know, they have plans for quite a few characters.

Marvel's The Avengers 2 starts production in 2014 and is set to hit theaters May 1, 2015. Viners, I assume this news has you stoked, yes?

I'm actually happy that Stark will only be on the Avenger movies for now. They can showcase Stark's interactions with the other Avengers. Maybe focus on the Stark/Banner relationship?

I can't tell if making more movies with RDJ will revitalize the film industry or completely bankrupt it on his salary alone.

@punyparker:

show this picture about forty-nine million nine hundred and ninety-nine thousand nine hundred niney-nine more times and that's why he's not leaving.

True dat.

I was expecting him to come back soon they paid a whole lot of money for him though.

I honestly can't see why they're so desperate to keep him, he's never screamed Tony Stark to me. I think Dominic Cooper (played Howard Stark in Captain America) is much better suited and his character probably wouldn't be so over-the-top-everything-is-a-joke silly. I'll bet they'll leave War Machine as well, even though he got hardly any screen time in any of the films. Tut tut.

Praise the Lord!!!!!

Well, obviously they got him back. I think it was always a question of how much Marvel had to pay, and not whether or not he would end up returning. Although of course I'm happy to see him come back, it just proves my point that the end of Iron Man 3 was a complete miscalculation.

I really like him playing the character but I wouldn't be that upset if they replaced him got rid of him after avengers 2.

To be honest they don't need any more iron man films. I've had my fill and I enjoyed them all.

Are we surprised?

People should just enjoy a good old fashioned time at the movies and stop fretting about all these details.

To play iron man? ha no Robert Downey jr won't play ironman/tony stark he will play the embarrassing, arrogant joke he played in ironman 3 so the idiot film goer can laugh and call him rebellious because he mocks everyone around him and only acts to further his ego.

its a real shame the Ironman franchise is so closely tied to the avenger that we cannot have a reboot, where iron man is done right.

I agree 100%. Iron Man 3 was terrible. It was like an overly sarcastic, American version of James Bond with horrible action scenes. Heck, he was barely in his suit in that movie. We knew who the man behind the armor was by the third film, they didn't have to try and shove him down our throats. Terrible usage of the Mandarin concept as well as AIM. But because Iron Man is a big draw, his character will clearly be the focus of the Avengers sequel, despite a more than capable cast around Downey Jr.

Oh come on! it wasn't that bad, it was at least a 6 out of 10, i liked that the movie focused on tony stark more so on iron man, HE is iron man, he doesn't need the suit for that, and you have to admit that Robert Jr's Performance was very cool. and The Movie version is much better than the comic book version, and besides, Whedon handled tony and iron man awesomely.

i'm so tired of this.

Just my opinion, but it was not a good film. It was maybe a little bit better written than the second installment, but clearly inferior to the original Iron Man. Guy Pearce actually, I felt, was the best actor in the entire film despite being given a fairly pedestrian antagonist role. Both Ben Kingsey and The Mandarin were just totally screwed over for a pretty goofy moment in the picture. I just didn't feel like it was an Iron Man flick at all, really, other than the really nice airplane crew rescue scene in the sky, which showed us what Stark can do as Iron Man. Again, I think Downey Jr. is a good actor but he's taken Tony Stark and turned him into RDJ rather than the other way around. A little too much sarcasm and dick humor for my tastes. The third film should've been something akin to Man of Steel in terms of the amount of action. We already had two films to illustrate to us what kind of man Tony Stark is without his armor. I would've liked to see the third one show us the suit's (and Stark's) full potential in a crisis situation.

The Iron Man movies suck and Downey Jr wouldn't know how to portray Tony Stark even if his life depended on it!

Posted by Hit_Monkey

I didn't think he would quit. Too much money on the table. It also quite obvious from the outset that Iron man was going to end at 3. Only so many characters that can be made into a movie at any given time.

Posted by drgnx

So Ironman signed to keep playing Ironman so some impostor won't!

RD Jr. is TONY STARK!

@cuddlyplane: Agreed! I also think thats why they had him say, "I am Iron Man" at the end of the 3rd.

I'm glad Downey will remain Strak/Iron Man.

He's great in the role and I can't imagine anyone playing it better than he does.

Yeah, being the major player in the third and fifth highest-grossing films of all time(and the highest-grossing superhero films of all time as well, to which he was paid $50 million alone for being in The Avengers)doesn't make anyone just stop acting.

@razzatazz Tony was SUPPOSED to use his Deep Space Armor and meet the Guardians of the Galaxy at the end of Iron Man 3. But that didn't pan out, so how he ties into the GOTG movie is unknown.

It's cool. I didn't reveal any plot spoilers.

I want one more Iron Man film, a really good one where he wears the best most powerful armour and fights someone suitably epic. Iron man 2 and 3 didn't show him to his true potential. After all this is one of the few characters who has in the past taken down the Hulk!

Edited by kilowog52

Just because he's only signing on for just two more movies now doesn't mean he won't sign on for even more later, does it? I admit, at first I didn't like the asshole-ish personality the movie version of Iron Man displayed. However, I think once you get used to it, it works. And I agree that he's growing out of it and learning to be a better man.

Now to all you haters out there, Iron Man 3 was an astoundingly good movie. True I was immensely upset about the issue surrounding the Mandarin, but I didn't let it prevent me from enjoying the movie for its good plot points. I'm sure a movie with the real Mandarin would have been much more epic, but let's recognize the quality that we got.

i know this is completely off topic but who agrees that a Secret Avengers movie would be amazing to see?
