Review: Wolverine and the X-Men Complete Series

Now you can buy all 26 episodes in one collection.

Finally the single release of all twenty-six episodes of Wolverine and the X-Men is available. There isn't a lot left to be said about this series. Chances are you have already watched all the episodes. I also recently reviewed the release of the final three episodes

Was the series perfect? No, but it came pretty darn close. This is an X-Men/Marvel cartoon series I would love to be able to watch every week. Unfortunately for reasons beyond their control, the show was canceled after only one season. I have been told and common sense say that the chances of another X-Men animated series is pretty good. It's just too bad this one had to end just when everything was working so well.

Did this series work as a comic book adaption?
== TEASER ==
Not all animated adaptions have been successful or faithful to their comic book counterparts. I think it goes without saying that you're going to want this collection in your personal home library. Thankfully, Lionsgate sent me a copy early and I was able to re-watch all twenty-six episodes once again. The show was highly ambitious and despite being a tease that we won't get a second season, you will want to go back and watch the series from the beginning from time to time.

What about the Special Features? I mentioned in my last review that the commentary is definitely worth listening to. I'm not a huge fan of listening to people talk while watching a movie or show, but the guys here are hilarious. They also give a ton of insight about what went into each episode and facts that weren't made public at the time.

There is also a making of feature: "The Inner Circle: Reflections on Wolverine and the X-Men." It's a 19-minute feature that gives you more information and really makes you realize how dark the show was and how lucky we were to get a show that wasn't watered down for television.

There is also a "Making of Wolverine and the X-Men" feature. This is a five minute segment that gets right down to what happened in making the show.

You also get some trailers for Lionsgate releases: Alpha and Omega, Thor: Tales of Asgard, Planet Hulk, Next Avengers, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Season 7, Super Capers and Speed Racer: The Next Generation - The Fast Track.

The audio and video look great. The animation moves smoothly and the show looks brilliant even though it has a sort of muted color scheme to it.

I would give this series a 4.5 out of 5. If for some reason you missed out on the show when it aired, do yourself a favor and buy this or put it on your gift list. There's so many different characters here and the whole series has such a wide feel to it. It's available on DVD and Blu-ray. Make sure to pick it up. It's in stores today.

I actually haven't seen a single episode. That Cyclops looks pretty badass, though. Maybe I should give it a shot.

It is so unfortunate that they canceled this..... I hope they pick up where they left off some day.

so obnoxious. Yet they renewed that crap Iron Man show.

@Jotham: the show's really good, probably my favorite X-Men series

This was a really well done show period it kinda dragged on a lil bit and over stayed its welcome in some parts that slow down the story but overall way better then that iron man show that is still renewed =/

o well we have avangers in a week just abouts prolly end up getting this eventually

Anyone know if there ever going to release Spectacular Spiderman Season 2 on DVD at all?

Posted by weaponx
@texasdeathmatch: I know!

@texasdeathmatch: That's right! Why was Iron Man renewed yet the actual good animated TV series like Spectacular Spider-Man and Wolverine and the X-Men canceled?

I'm going to get this this week!

It was a good show. I would like to see the second season with Apocalypse.

@weaponx: @sora_thekey: The sad part is they probably renewed the Iron Man show since he's the hot comic fuzz these days. Wolverine and the X-Men even got good ratings, just another example of poor executive decision making.

I've been waiting for them to release the dvd here.  I briefly considered importing the canadian version but held back since it didn't have the audio commentary.  I really wanted them to keep going with another season though.

@texasdeathmatch: From what I know X-Men was cancelled because of financial differences between the company that produced it and Marvel.

One of the things i loved about WTXM was the abundance of mutants they had at their disposal. You had the classics characters but then you also got a chance to see a lot of the newer characters ex: X-23, Hellion, Dust, and Mercury to name a few.

Wish they had put Daken in though

Posted by texasdeathmatch
@ComicMan24: I guess the animation was top notch. Character design was SO MUCH better than Iron Man's.
Posted by ComicMan24
@texasdeathmatch: I haven't seen Iron Man so I can't tell.
Posted by texasdeathmatch
@ComicMan24: I've tried to watch it, but lost interest, quickly. Plus, the villains looked like shit.

I enjoyed this series from what I saw of it. Not my favorite comic to cartoon tv series, but pretty entertaining still.

@texasdeathmatch: I see that a lot of people don't like it.

Most of the WATX episodes were hit or miss for me and its popularity did take a dive towards the end because the channel it was on kept moving the air time/date around and then took so long before they showed the final episodes and I'm sure it didn't help that the series aired in its entirety in Canada long before it did here in the US.

I for one liked Iron Man Armored Adventures more :P Anybody know when the season two premiere is?

Really thought season 2 was gonna come. I resisted jumping on then when I jump on they cancel it...

Didn't catch a single episode of this, but now that it's on DVD, I might have to pick it up.
I was disappointed when I got X-Men: The Animated Series on DVD by how poorly it held up, so if Wolverine and the X-Men is a more contemporary take on the team, I'd love to check it out.

picked this up today; can't wait to start watching it.

Posted by Lustwish

um right...you mean give out money in return for it? oh...yeah ok, Ill take one.  lol

I got a metal case version of this a few months ago, except they called it the complete first season

I drifted in and out of watching this show, it is one of the better x-cartoons I've seen in a while.

Weird, cartoons are weird when it comes to dvd releases, Canada has had the full season on dvd for a long time now. but not with these special features. but the new marvel super hero squad, we only get single dvds and not the full season that is coming out in the U.S. Weird.

anyways, this was an awesome show to bad it left on the cliff hanger and will never be concluded.

Not to sound like a fanboy. But where is Storm? I mean they have Rogue and Iceman. But they couldn't find a place for Storm?
Posted by danhimself

I kind of thought that they might have had a "what might have been" special feature....I feel like the must of had some sort of work done on season 2 before the show got canceled

alright i guess i'll sell my stealbook dvd for this. You've convinced me to buy this G-man.  I guess this is better than having the edition with minimal bonus features. Do know if the same features have been transferred to this set to (from the previous edition)?

Posted by longbowhunter

I never watched any of these. Seeing Multiple Man in that picture above makes me wanna buy this.

For me, the release schedule killed this show.  The first episode aired in January 2009 and the last episode didn't air until [1 day short of] December 2009... a full year to release 26 half-hour episodes.  For a serialized show it's tough to keep interested enough to catch it or to keep up if you miss an episode.

That said I think I've seen most of it... I do remember it being ambitious in terms of trying to juggle a storyline in two times.  I might pick this up.

Aww...Wolverine and the X-Men. I miss it. I liked it because it had Emma Frost in it. ;)

I think this was the BEST X-Cartoon out there, ever. Period!

I am sad that it didnt make it to another season. They should make a cartoon movie, of AoA to complete the series run.  That will help fill some viewer needs.

I loved Dazzler in this show, they way they drew her powers blew my mind.

Posted by haydenclaireheroes

I might just get this DVD

Posted by Edamame

If any of you would like to see a return to the second season AOA adaptation, I would recommend that you purchase all of these Wolverine and the X-Men season 1 DVDs.  The sales would certainly help convince them that bringing the show back would be profitable.  It was a pretty good show anyway.

Posted by Mr. Mercury

It grew on me, then I find out they weren't releasing another season. They should have aired this on CN or the original Nick. They would have garnered a lot more fans.

Posted by Bestostero

OMG! That's released today???  I'm gonna go buy it now lol weeeeee!

My boys love this show

Posted by DownZero

I really enjoyed Wolverine and The X-Men. At first I didn't think I would, but it grew on me really quick. I was really interested in the AOA way they were going. I wanted to see Cyc with one eye and Wolverine with one hand. And Apocalypse is by far one of the best villains in the Marvel Universe and one of my favorite characters. We needed something new from the marvel Universe and Wolverine and the X-Men was really doing it for me. Hopefully the new Marvel Anime on G4 will give me my nerd fix.

Posted by Edamame
@DownZero: They will bring back the AOA cartoon, only if the sales of these Wolverine and the X-Men DVDs are high.

When I hear that WATXM got canceled, because of monetary differences it really pisses me off. You mean to tell me that Marvel got all this access to cash when Disney bought it (and Disney has more money than god), and now they can't afford to put a second season out?  That is a 15 yards for excessive bullshit there.

This series and Spectacular Spiderman are the BEST animated series that Marvel put out EVER. And now they are both gone. It is decisions like this that make me lose faith in what Marvel is doing.

Posted by Edamame
@Whitley: I think if we continue to increase the sales of these X-Men DVDs, it may just be brought back.  I think this methodology worked with Family Guy, which was cut once before, but then brought back.
Posted by GothamRed

The only problem with this show was the channel it was on.  Why put it on nicktoon?  Was it not worthy of the quality of such great shows as "iCarly" and "Big Time Rush".  Come on Viacom, spend some time not worrying about people putting your s#!@ on youtube and actually look at the quality of the shows you put on which channel.  Spectacular spider-man had the same issue, why put Marvel Super Hero Squad on a basic cable channel, and put the good shows on the channels you have to pay extra for, did they really think that would make people pay for nicktoons.  That assuming that A, people know the show is on that channel, and B, that people don't realize that everything else on that channel either sucks or can be bought on DVD.  I don't know, maybe they were counting on this DVD selling well to continue the series, like Family Guy.  With all that, who's looking forward to Avengers: The World's Mightiest Heroes inevitable one season on Disney XD, God damnit, will marvel ever learn.  Maybe they'll be smart and put the show on their youtube page or website as a better alternative, but I really doubt it.  And yes, I know the've been putting micro-episodes on it, they are awesome, but that doesn't prove anything.

good to be released in full.
sad that that's "complete" ei: no more.

Posted by Wishful_Thinker

I can't believe they cancelled this. Honestly, I wasn't too big on X-Men Evolution but this was near perfect. Ugh. What is wrong with you Marvel?

Edited by Illyana Rasputin

Amazing how the cover art looks nothing like the animation itself. I was bummed when the show got cancelled. Magik was going to be in season 2. :(

Posted by 00 Raiser

So what was the reason for the show being cancelled? I have heard a number of reasons?
Posted by leokearon

It was a good show, it's a shame there isn't a second season
