Review: Ultimate Mystery #1

When did this get so messy?

No Caption Provided
Still reeling from the aftershocks of Ultimatum, the heroes of Ultimate Marvel deal with the new contexts they've found themselves in following this disaster, as well as the starling changes their own bodies are undergoing.

The Good

I'll always complement Bendis for writing dialogue and characterizations that you just don't get to see in these kind of stories usually. So the extended dialogue between Ultimate Captain Marvel and Quasar in Project Pegasus' vault of treasures in the beginning was a lot of fun because Bendis made Marvel out to be a genuine ass (yet somehow in a charming way.) I similarly enjoyed the banter (and borderline sexual tension?) between Spider-Man and his "clone" Spider-Woman, even if I had issues with how it was staged. I'm also glad to see that this title has freedom to take these characters in some bold new directions they wouldn't be allowed to take in regular continuity - - like the Thing shedding his "cocoon."

The Bad

Even though I enjoyed their barbs, for the most part, the extended dialogue between Spidey and Spider-Woman ran a little ridiculous. Especially that double splash that was a page-long conversation laid over a single image. Either the script was way too wordy or the art had to be broken down into more panels. Also, even though I liked those first two scenes, this whole thing ran way too convoluted, which runs in the face of the whole point of the Ultimate line. Instead of a clear narrative streamlining Marvel mainstays for new readers, you have a bunch of complicated characters showing up in the middle of convoluted storyline without any kind of explanation.

The Verdict - 3/5

It's a little disheartening to read this because I'm getting shades of how the 2099 line ended up in the 90s. This whole line started with a spirit of modernization and accessibility, only to now be buckling under the weight of its own continuity. It's even got clones, now! If you haven't read the crossover mini-series just prior to this, you're going to be helplessly lost. It all sticks out even more because Bendis isn't doing what he's been doing so well in Ultimate Comics Spider-Man.

This was sort of a let down for me as well, especially since I've been waiting for Ult. Captain Marvel's return

I think Bendis is just putting to much on his plate, I mean just stick to one book man, stop over doing it because it shows in other titles.

Sadly I agree... and it seems to be reflected most on his Ultimate books... ie. the latest Ultimate Comics Spider-Man

I think it's okay, I just wish they would get a different writer on the title.

You guys are crazy! I really liked this issue and I've been a huge fan of the Avengers. Maybe I'm just too big of a Bendis fan but I really liked this issue and would give it AT LEAST a 3.5/5, probably a 4. I like it.

I think there should be different writers on every ultimate book and just have Loeb over look it all. Since Ultimate universe is Loeb's baby. I was pretty hyped up for this issue and it didnt live to my expectations. Every Ultimate title seems like a miniseries. There needs to continuing lines like Spider-man. And great there is going to be another miniseries with Ultimate Thor :(.
I really wish there were more ongoings.

@doordoor123: The Ultimate Universe is not Loeb's baby! It's Bendis'!
He wrote the first few issues of Ultimate FF and has been writing all the Ultimate Spider-Man series plus he wrote the original Ultimate X-Men first issues!
The 1610 Universe is Benids' and Hitch's baby!

@sora_thekey: Actually Its Bendis and Mark Millar's baby since Mark Millar brought the Avengers and X-men into the Ultimate universe and both of them got together to co write the first 6 issues Ultimate Fantastic four
And don't forget about Bill Jemas he co-wrote the first 7 issues of Ultimate Spider-man so really its Bendis, Millar and Bill jemas' baby.

@IronSpidy-Rooney: you were right, they did do it together, and you are also right in the fact that's it Bendis AND Millar's baby,  In a way more Millar's considering he had to work with so many more characters then Bendis did at the time.  They all worked so well and I loved the books that they did.  Nice to see of all the books that Bendis has been doing over the years he never left Spidey.  I sure wish Millar never left the U. X-Men or the Ultimates, or the FF. and Im so giddy that he's back.  Hopefully he see just how bad thing got on those books after he did such a good job.  For a time those books were out selling their 616 counterparts.  FF was the only one that didn't  I never ever read the Avengers or the FF before I read the Ultimate versions.   It was a very very good way to get introduced to the characters, even with the differences between the worlds.

@goldenkey: Thats what the Ultimate universe is all about introducing new readers to some of marvels Iconic characters and their origins (even if they are different from what they were 50 yrs ago) but those differences are what we love about the Ultimate universe

This issue was horrible.  Nothing happened, all the dialogue was horrible, boring and very annoying, also the jokes didn't even make me giggle.  It was a complete waste of money you would think that for $3.99 it would at least be decent.  The only thing I liked about it was the objects in project pegasus but we didn't get to see much of them because the issue was cluttered with horrible dialogue.  1/5
