Review: The Boys #41

Malchemical isn't feeling super duper.

No Caption Provided
Wee Hughie keeps tabs on Super Duper, a team of “sheltered” super heroes who’ve just found a new leader in the form of the snarky Malchemical.

THE GOOD

Few artists, aside from Kevin Maguire, have as great a command of facial expression as Darick Robertson does. Every character has a distinct look and personality, and even the most subtle aspects of what they feel from panel to panel come across clearly. While this isn’t Ennis at his A-game, the writer’s honed skills are still on display, here - - particularly in the scene where Super Duper’s minder gently tries to rein Malchemical in.

THE BAD

The issue with this comic isn’t so much what’s on the page, as what could be on the page, instead. Given that Ennis has voiced his intense dislike for superheroes on many an occasions, it’d be more enjoyable to see these two tremendous talents on a series like Just A Pilgrim or Battlefields, instead of a superhero spoof that’s treading ground already well-covered by comics like Brat Pack and Marshall Law.

THE VERDICT

Ennis and Robertson are two of the best creators in the business, bar none. Even on their off days, they still put out better work than most of the industry.  It’s unfortunate that, instead of seeing these talents on a concept they’re entirely behind, we’ve got a series that’s entirely about “taking the piss out” of superheroes, since that’s something that’s been specifically done a lot before.
