Review: Invincible #72

The Viltrumite War is here. Can Invincible survive?

No Caption Provided
The Viltrumite War is in full swing as Conquest and Invincible go at it again.

The Good

Since the first time I picked up this book, I loved it, and even though I'm 12 issues behind, I still loved this issue too. I started reading this book because I've always been a fan of Robert Kirkman's writing, and it quickly became one of my favorites because of Ryan Ottley's pencils. I love how these two guys work together, and within this issue, there are some amazing battle scenes and splash pages. That's one of my personal favorite things about this team, they do battle scenes incredibly well together, and they do not pull punches. It's violent, gory, and unforgiving, but not to a point where it's over-doing it.

The Bad

I've been reading this book in Ultimate Collection only, so I'm about a year behind. A lot happens in a whole year, a whole lot of stuff that makes me pretty lost. The final pages of this issue is a pretty big shocker. Enough to upset me, so this may be in the good section also because it got a pretty big emotional response from me, but I wasn't a fan of what happened, even though I have a good feeling everything will go back to normal soon enough.

The Verdict- 4/5

This is one great book. I'd even say, although I hate to say it, you should buy this just for the art. The fights contained in here are nothing short of amazing. Yes, the writing is exceptionally great here too. Invincible is the super-hero book for those who want something a little different. It's comedic, dramatic, and action packed without any of those elements trampling over each other and this issue is a great example of that.

Volume 13 (coming out in July I think) contains issues 65-70, so if (like me) you've been catching up with the series through the trades, now would be a good time to start buying the actual comics. I bought 71 and 72 and store them until the 65-70 trade comes out (probably gonna have 73 and 74 as singles by then)

ps: I have to agree that although the writing is amazing, Ottley's art is one of the main reason why I keep buying Invincible.

I thought it was interesting that this book has that "been in the sun too long" look for the cover.

Something about the costume designs I see on the cover feel kind of lazy to me. Though, the overly heroic outfits never appealed much to me. I've always preferred more clothing styles of uniforms.

Ever since Invincibles. I have never looked at capes the same way.

Haha I thought the exact same thing when I got mine.  At least I'm not alone on that end. :)  So, I really liked the ending to this issue.  I just wish there was more mystery surrounding the next few issues.  Unfortunately I can't help but read the solicits so I already know that things could be a lot worse than they appear at this point in the Viltrumite War.  One thing I really miss is Atom Eve.  There wasn't any scenes back on Earth in this issue, and if you, like me, are worried about her situation right now, a little headway to what's going on with her would be key.  All in all, this is the best book that I read from month to month.  It's my favorite.  It's near perfection as far a super-hero story goes.  It's just bittersweet that Kirkman is so envolved with the Walking Dead TV series.  I read in an interview a few days ago that TWD is the only book right now he knows is going to have coming out on time(which is understandable).  Kirkman then said he was just getting to writing Inv. #75. :(  There was no reference to any of his other on-going books like Haunt or Image United.  We may be in for major breaks between Invincible issues.

One of Kirkman's first books, Battle Pope, in the early 00s, is what got me reading comics again

I feel I missed something in this issue.  At the end Eve saidm "I don't know how to tell him."  I'm confused on if this event already happened in a previous issue or is this something they pointed at.  More then likely they haven't told us what's wrong.  Hit me up if you can answer my question, thanks.
