Review: Fraggle Rock #1

Yes, there are Dozers in the comics, and a few mentioned in the review.

" Dance your cares away, worries for another day. Let the music play, down at Fraggle Rock. ::clap clap::" Now that I've covered the most important part about Fraggle Rock, I can continue. Like most things Jim Henson was involved with during the 70s and 80s, I remember Fraggle Rock being pure gold; however, I really haven't watched the show since it was on the air. Fraggle Rock is the newest property of Archaia Comics, and of course, this is a kids books, but I'm a child at heart anyway.

The Good

This book is split into three different stories. The first story, entitled "A Throne of my Own" as tons of fun. It's a classic "journey into the wilderness" story and the art really represented the original characters very well. It brought back a lot of memories seeing all these guys once again, and the book had me smiling on more than once occasion, especially this story. Out of all three of the stories, I liked the artwork in this book the best. The second story, "Time Flies" would probably be the best one for the kids, the artwork is a lot more animated style, and it had Dozers in it. The third story "Red's Big Idea" also had a quick, fun story in it. I felt the writing was all solid throughout the book, and it brought back a lot of great memories. Best part? Well the last page of the comic features a step-by-step lesson in how to draw a Dozer. If I had the time to do it today, you'd know darn well I'd showcase it here.

The Bad

I was not a fan of the art in the third story, and I don't really think it suits well to kids either, but I'm not a kid, so who knows. The other problem I had with the book was the introduction to the world of Fraggle Rock: Gobo and Red had short bios on the inside cover, but there's nothing really else there to introduce newcomers into the world of the Fraggles or help some of us old timers remember what we've been missing.

The Verdict

I grew up on this show, and oh I've missed it so. I'm very much looking forward to the next couple of issues, as well as the FCBD issue this Saturday. If you loved the show growing up, and don't mind picking up a kids book from the local comic book shop (which you shouldn't in the first place. There's nothing wrong with enjoying a good kid's comic now and again), then you'll surely be glad, as an adult, you picked this one up.

If you grew up on the show, or now have kids of your own:

That's all I can remember of the theme song. That show was a little creepy sometimes, the way only muppets could be, but I loved it.
