Review: Amazing Spider-Man #648, BIG TIME

Big Time is a big success!

No Caption Provided
It's no secret that I'm a big fan of Spider-Man. There's been a lot of push towards the new direction of Amazing Spider-Man. With "Big Time," the series is switching from being published three times a month to two and instead of a rotating team of writers, we now have one with Dan Slott. I have to admit I was a little skeptical with all the hoopla surrounding this issue before it's release.

The Good

Wow. This is such a massive issue. If you look at the characters that appear on the issue page here, you'll see that it's practically an Amazing Spider-Man reunion. There are so many characters that pop into this issue. At first it felt like it was a little nod to old time readers and was done as a slight gimmick. But this is Dan Slott we're talking about. He has shown many times in the past that he does things for a reason. I can only assume that each character that appeared here will drop in again in future stories. You really get a sense of

Spider-Man has usually been a loner and it's a nice change of pace to see him interacting and getting some respect from the Avengers and Fantastic Four. There's a couple times in the issue where Peter's great intelligence is acknowledged. Too many times in the past it felt like writers forgot how brilliant he is.

Are there fights? Are there villains? Yes! This isn't the first time Slott has written Spider-Man, obviously, but I almost feel like he's been holding back. And as far as the last page of the story, all I can say is "Thank you!" to Dan Slott.

What about the art? If you've seen Humberto Ramos' art before, you know you're in for a treat. His distinctive style is welcomed and simply adds a new dimension to the story.

The Bad

There really wasn't anything bad. My only complaint is with Ramos' art. I really dig and respect his style but a couple times the characters are a little too stylized, like the way Hawkeye and Bucky appear on the first page.

The Verdict - 5/5 Highly Recommended

This is a Spider-Man book for new and old readers. There's so many nods and acknowledgements to Spider-Man's past and all the supporting characters and villains but they are presented in a way that won't overwhelm newer readers. Hands down, my pick of the week. I cannot wait for the next issue.

Whoa, what the hell?!  I thought this didn't come out until next week.  I didn't even see it on the rack at my shop.  And I don't mean "there's a blank area, it must be sold out" not there.  The book on the absolute farthest left was Ant-Man and Wasp.  S---, now I gotta go back tomorrow and see what the deal is.

Awesome issue.  I feel like Flash sums it up... this is about Peter moving forwards (not without OMD irony, but we're past that now).

I was a bit thrown by Max Modell... given how hyped up his portrayal, I wasn't sure if we were supposed to know him already or not (I half wondered if he was the futurist from Iron Man: Extremis but then remembered that guy had white hair and was named Sal).  The backup feature is also pretty cute and a sweet tie-in to the issue much the way the first-kiss storyline tied everything together in the last issue.

Part of the reason we read comics is because we love these characters and when you love someone you want to see them succeed in life, win, grow, be challenged, and be happy.  Seeing Peter as a loser for some time now- as May prays, "God, he needs this!"- has been off-putting, but this is a total breath of fresh air and brings back a Peter to cheer for... and who wins!

A great jumping-on point that makes one of our favorite superheroes look actually heroic through and through!

I absolutely cannot wait until I live in an area with a comic book store.  This is the kind of issue I'd definitely pick up, as Spider-Man was a favorite when I was a teenager.  Here's hoping for a long line of great comics from Dan Slott and the Spider-Man team.

Loved the issue and how Slott is emphasizing Peter's intellect that has been neglected a bit and still keep him funny. The issue feels incredible and have a lot of future plots set up.

The fact that this is dropping to only twice a month is good enough news from this review for me. I had to cut back on books for awhile and unfortunately Spidey was one. Plus now a consistent writer and hopefully artists it sounds like Spidey will get back into my pull list.

This was a great read. The start of "Big Time" had the right mix of being accessible to new readers and progressing the story for old readers. I generally just had fun reading the book...the back-up feature was done in the right way that I felt it enhanced the book...overall, this was easily the best book I read this week.

Ramos is on this??  gotta get it then.  for some reason Ramos manga style is above and beyond beautiful.  I find myself just staring at his pages a lot after I read the books.  Just gazing at the simple yet detailed work he does.

I'm avoiding Big Time like the plague for one reason, and one reason alone.  Carlie Cooper.  Is it petty?  Probably.  But that's how much I hate the damn character

My problem with this issue was Slott taking another jab at the fan boys with that MJ asking Pete to move in, it was a goad.

Be curious to see what Slott has in store with the teaser of "The Death of Spider-man" in Feb.

This is me too. I dropped it to save money and because I wasn't compelled to read it anymore. But I will pick up this issue.

Whoo, this issue was so great. So amazing, so spectacular, I don't even have words to go with it. Probably the best comic issue I've read since--well, there's been a lotta good comics that's come out this year, but this is definitely up there. I feel good after reading it. I'm gonna read it again, just because.

This was a great issue even the spider-girl stuff was good and I usually don't get into all the extra spider people. The art was my only complaint and it was only a minor one at that. Great story.

lol, actually, I'm hoping he falls prey to Black Cat.  I really don't like Carlie, and as my avatar would indicate, I'm a big Felicia fan

Yes but they just have to get over that one issue of her hating in her words the boring person who he really is under the mask. lol

I really liked the issue, but Humberto Ramos' art style looks like it was drawn for a Saturday morning cartoon.  Now the artist for Spider-girl Clayton Henry, he's the one that should be doing the art for Amazing Spiderman.

I let my brother who is not an avid Spiderman reader take a look at my copy of the issue.  From his point of view of not knowing the Spiderman universe like I do, having so many of Peter's supporting cast was a bit much.  I really like Dan Slott's writing and I think this is a good jumping on point but a  5 out of 5 is a little generous.
