Preview: MS MARVEL #8

This is a brilliant book and the arts fantastic look forward to reading this issue when I get it.

Nice break down. I can agree with you, I like reading about a character who has a strong family and social/cultural environment. It is a big reason why I like Kamala so much. Her difficulties in life may not be gargantuan in the larger sphere of things, but they are pretty big in her eyes (parental expectations, etc) and getting a ring side seat to her life is pretty cool.

I like the art. I like when the art matches the tone of the book and this does that.

art is great imo, it's just different than usual art.

I felt the same way at first, but now fanboyism has taken over me lol Captain Marvel mantle and costume gave her the chance to shine in the comic world and be recognised among the other Marvel ladies, and I like that. The problem of the corrent costume is that not everyone is good at drawing it, and it looks slightly different for each comic I pick up with her in.

Don't like the art, or the name (deja vu)

@tximinoman: Despite taste I think the other art they had the last two issues opens the book up to more people since it looked more like a comic book, and if you are active on tumblr you'll notice that like 80% of all the Ms. Marvel images getting re-blogged a lot are from those few issue or from the cover artist, but not many for the main art. Tumblr is a good way to gauge the over all feeling on an art style since the site is full of artists.

@tximinoman: It's fine. The book is great I just don't think it's unique. I think that you could honestly take the entire description you used in your previous post and swap out Kamala with Jaime Reyes. /shrug

Kate Bishop (I'm going to say her 'cause she's the only one I know off) has a tragic origin. She comes from a rich family who doesn't give a fuck about her (yeah, I know, it's not the saddest story ever -but it's not a happy normal family either) and she learned how to defend herself after she was raped (well it's not clear but she was "attacked" by someone in Central Park and that left her thraumatized so you can assume she was raped or really close to get raped).

The other two seem normal though (at least from what I've read in their Comic Vine Wiki page -I know nothing about them, sorry)

@tximinoman: Various writers and editors at Marvel have promoted the book by saying its the closest thing to class Spider-Man in comics today.

Everything you claimed about her being unique really to me just means you should read more comics since nothing that you listed isn't extremely typical for younger heroes. The only thing that makes her stand out a little is the fact she has no tragic origin with a dead family member or relations to other super heroes. Not to say that hasn't been done before with Richard Rider, Speedball, Kate Bishop, etc. but they are the minority.

It is a very diferent and unique take in the classic superhero story. First of all, 'cause she's a nerd. She wrote superhero fanfics on a forum and shit, she's the type of girl who probably will wrote comments here if she actually existed, and that's (as far as I know) new. I have never seen a Superhero who was a fan.

Secondly, she has a family. She has a father, a mother and a big brother, and apparently they are happy together. There's no drama in his life, she's just a regular girl. There's no dead or missing parents, no ex-superhero people in her family (at least that we know of)... nothing. As far as we know Kamala is your regular everyday nerd, someone any of us can relate to (except maybe for the fact that she's muslim, but that's not even that important for her, I mean, it will be the same if her family was christian or jewish). And, again, as far as I know, that's new.

Also, she's a pacifist, or at least she doesn't want to hurt people. In the last issue she told Wolverine she doesn't like to hurt other people or animals, which, btw, makes total sense because as a normal everyday nerd my guess is that she hasn't been involved in a fight before, so I get that she has second thoughts after actually hurting something or someone. Normal people feel bad about those things, even if they were defending themselves. Again, as far as I know, that's new. No new superhero (and I might be wrong, I haven't read every comic ever published) has ever had any kind of struggle about getting in a fight, Spider-Man went from being bullied around to beat the shit out of supervillains without a problem. So, at least for me, this is new.

So yeah, this is the classic superhero story, but at the same time is new, diferent, refreshing and unique.

I don't think this book is that different. It's meant to be close to classic Peter Parker where she has to managed school and a social life while hiding her super heroing.

Besides the more relatable/modern background it's very classic super hero.

NOOO! The last few issue had amazing art and now it's back to being aggressively ugly :(

Now this will change from one of my favorite books back to one of the books I struggle to like because the bad art makes it so hard to get into.
