Peter Parker Spins His Final Web in Amazing Spider-Man #700

The historic final issue is on sale now.

There's been a lot of talk about what happens in today's final issue of THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN. Reaching a 700th issue is a big feat for a Marvel comic and unfortunately this marks the end for Spider-Man as we know him. But nothing lasts forever, including radical changes to comic book characters.

Here's what Marvel Editor-in-Chief Axel Alonso had to say:

This is the single most seismic shift in Spider-Man’s history—and it’s not something that will disappear any time soon. When Spider-Man editor Steve Wacker and writer Dan Slott came to us with this story, it was clear that this was a long term plan crafted with the utmost love and respect for the character. This is the kind of story that will have fans up in arms—but also coming back to the comic stores to check out each new exciting issue.

THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN may be ending today but on January 9, Marvel launches SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN by Dan Slott and Ryan Stegman. Shipping twice a month, the series begins the new chapter for Spider-Man. How long until Spidey's closest allies discover the truth?

You may have heard the spoilers or seen some images. You'll want to read the historic issue for yourself. Try to avoid discussing the events unless you use the spoiler tags because there's bound to be those out there that have managed to avoid them and are picking up the issue today.

Don't forget after reading AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #700, the story continues in AVENGING SPIDER-MAN #15.1

I am thoroughly disappointed...

Spiderman could have gone out with so much more flash. I'm not going to read superior at all. Doc ock being Spiderman is so juvenile...

Until the last few pages I really thought something glorious was going to go down, but nope. Doc ock just revels in the evil of his past and vows to be a good guy from now on. I just feel so let down.

Sorry for the negativity, but, just wow.

Don't be sorry. Dan Slott has stabbed everyone so far up our backs, we can taste the metal.

Wow, just wow. I got chills at the end of this issue. Doc Ock is Spider-Man.... WTF. I wanted to cry foul at first but this story arc was amazing and it felt like a satisfying ending. The major question for me seems to be how much of this new Spider-Man is really Doc Ock, his "soul" or brainwaves may be in control but the mix of Peter's memories and flash of Peter's dying vision seem to be leading to a person whose mind is neither fully Doc Ock or Peter but a strange combination of the two. I'm excited to read Superior Spider-Man.

As a non-Spidey buyer, just getting my taste of him from the Avengers books, I jumped in with these last two issues after reading what has happened...and I liked it. I thought it was interesting and leaves an easy fix wide open when they want to revert. I'm intrigued how Superior fits into the rest of the Marvel Universe and will the Avengers notice

Fuck this issue... I'm done with most of marvel. I'm not going to act like a deranged fanboy, I'm just gonna move on. I'm just reading Ultimate Spider-man/X-men and Wolverine and the X-men that's it until Peter comes back (which he will in probably a year). People who don't like this development don't buy any of the issues until they fix this.

First it was Doc Ock, then The Green Goblin, then it was Venom. Now Peter/Spidy's true arch-enemy is revealed... Beware the evil power of... The House of Ideas!

The concept of what would an older nerd "that would teach the world to respect him" do with the memories and powers of Spider-man is an interesting one that could certainly create some epic storytelling, especially by shelving Peter Parker for a while to do it.

That said, Doc Ock was dating Aunt May. For him to try and get with Mary Jane (even if simply an academic exercise to prove how poorly Parker ran his life) is just oodles of gross and I can't shake the aging baby boomer working out a midlife crisis (I'm talking the creative staff, not an in universe defense) creepy.

I know Parker will be back just in time for the sequel to TASM 2, but yeah this sucks. :(

Angry fans...this is when you do not pick up the comic book from the store. Poor Peter, but he will definitely be back. Just like Captain America and Batman were.

I'm disappointed with the ending but I'm still looking for what will happen in the future. I'm going to be open-minded on this matter.

I think Slott wrote a compelling "final" arc that kept us guessing until the tragic ending "carbonadium plating, evil wins!" I think "fan outrage" was Slott's goal and he succeeded with flying colors. He took his life, he took his girl, and now he has all of peter's memories right there with him to stew in. I'm psyched to see how Otto handles his newfound memories. Superior could be awesome. While you're raging remember One way or another Peter will be back again someday soon.

Ok, everyone relax. Are you calm? Good. Peter Parker hasn't gone anywhere, he just thinks he's Doc Ock. Once he realizes this and sees how much he has accomplished and what a difference his new mentality has made in his life, he'll question everything about himself and that will be Otto's true revenge. (or something like that)

What I'm most excited for (besides Pete returning) is for when everyone else-- MJ, Avengers, Fantastic Four, etc. figure out that something is up with Peter, and that he needs help! I cant wait to see how they will react, and what they think they should do about it...... Just a question though, will Spiderman in the Avengers comics and stuff be the Superior Spiderman, or will he be regular Spiderman.... Superior right? Cause its all taking place in the same universe??????

People are saying Peter could have gone out in a more flashy epic way? Please the whole point was that he was selfless until the very end always striving to do whats right no matter the cost. His last act was selfless and heroic but no one ever knew? Being a hero shouldn't be about recognition. Sure the writing could have been different but he didnt go out being humiliated, he went out the death of a tragic hero selfless until the end. I dont get how some people dont atleast see that. .SLott used Peter's history to setup his end.

I finished reading the issue yesterday. I thought it was pretty terrible. To me a comic has to be either fun or well written, this one was neither. I have found that Slott usually does fun better than well written. With a 90+ page issue, they could have used a lot more pages in the main story to fill in some of the huge holes that just ruined the story for me. Also their claim that they have been seeding the idea since 600 is really weak. Why did Dock Ock need access to Peter's memories back then if Peter had access to all of Ocks memories without the benefit of past exposure to them. Was Dock just studying up? And how did Ock know he would have enough time to complete the transfer, or that Pete wouldn't see it coming because his spider sense was down. Did Ock know that Spider Island would happen and that Peter would know where the octobots were because his girlfriend was working in evidence. Why wouldn't he just transfer his mind into a henchman and buy himself more time to carry out his ultimate goal. Why did Slott have to make a point that Pete could feel Ocks memories before showing us the Aunt May scene? How exactly did Peter make Ock live his old memories and magically turn the guy who was using impact webbing (and sending bad guys after) his friends a few minutes ago into a good guy? The same ock who apparently had a chance to stop global warming and become a worldwide hero and make spider-man look like a prick but chose instead to attempt to destroy the world. Suddenly he's a hero?

I recently got caught back up with Spider-man when I realized it was the 50th anniversary and I was excited to see what they were going to come up with to celebrate, but the Alpha debacle and then this have just been handled terribly. I realize Peter will be back, but this was a pretty terrible 50th birthday present for the webslinger. I might pick up Avenging 15.1 or some of the superior spider man issues if they go on 99c sales in the digital shop, but if not I will wait until they hit MDCU to read the exploits of the Superior spider-man.

I liked it, and although I've always liked Peter, I kind of hope that he doesn't come back.

Why?

I see many people wanting "things to go back to the way they were", these kinds of thoughts are what holds life and human evolution back. Stick with this change and when even more changes come further down the line maybe they lead to something "amazing" again, but that's new.

Stick with the old and progression crawls along and our lives are dull and repetitive.

Embrace change, keep positive and we all get somewhere better quicker.

I just read the issue 1 of Spiderman Noir...(yes...i didnt get to read it till now...) and i can say i'm preety impressed!

It is VERY good, and interesting version of Peter Parker....

What i'm trying to say is that there are a lot of other awesome limited series that we can read....dont give up he will be back...as for Superior, enjoy the ride!!

P.S. Why some limited series never became a full series?....for example Noir...or ASM presents Black Cat....there were very good....(Black Cat i read, and Noir,i assume its awesome too....the first ish, was!)

I'm really really debating whether to pick up Superior. I hate the ending of Amazing but I wanta see what they do with Doctor Octopus. Right now, due to dying wish. Doc Ock has gone from not being like to Marvel's 2nd most loved character. Next to the original Spider-Man, Peter Parker. Should I check out superior?

you can officially count me as one of those "fans up in arms". I loved this comic for a myriad of reasons but mainly because of how great a character Peter Parker is. There is a reason this book has been so popular for so long & Spidey is almost never regulated to being a secondary character. I hate this idea & if & the fact it seems they are doing this to generate buzz to maybe boost sales. I honestly don't know if I'll read this comic again.

what i dont get about amazing spider-man 700, is that all spider-man had to do was send an email to avengers/mary jane, He was able to order a prison break with mind from ocks cell, why not simple send a message out to the people he was worried about doc ock hurting in his body, and if he couldnt from prison, but why the hell would he walk to avengers tower to explain it, in stead of sending a message, the avengers ID card cant be the only way they have to keep in touch, and even if it was, he could still send a mail to MJ, or text her.

I know, right!!!!! Plus, I STILL haven't read ASM 698 yet (!!!!!!!!) because it sold out and my comic store still hasn't gotten more in yet, but I know that Cap told Pete that Ock wanted to speak to him alone in the room..... Pete should have asked someone to come with him anyways, or stand outside the door or something, cause- you know, Doc Ock's life goal is pretty much to kill Peter... And plus, wouldn't there be security cameras in the room and stuff that would give a better idea of what went on?? All he would have had to do was yell or something when Ock started explaining, and none of this would have ever have happened.....

Also So when Pete starts acting all sinister and stuff (Spock), don't you think the Avengers should know that something's up? So instead of just firing him, don't you kinda think that maybe something's wrong?? If anybody I knew all of a sudden started acting strange like that, and I really knew them, like the Avengers and the FF know Pete, I would know there's something wrong, I wouldn't just be like 'Get out of my life!' I obviously don't know how it's going to happen yet, but the spoiler is out, and he's going to get fired from the Avengers. How could they let that happen!!!! And if Wolverine can smell fear and lies, don't you think he would be able to smell that it's Ock and not Pete???
