Paul Cornell and Ryan Stegman talk WOLVERINE Relaunch

Following the events from "Killable," Wolverine's headed in a new direction.

If you read this week's WOLVERINE #1, you know Logan's gone through some changes. Described as "the second season" of WOLVERINE, we're finding this isn't quite the Wolverine we're used to.

Wolverine is now with a group on the wrong side of the law, run by a man known as the Offer. It's not immediately clear what offer the Offer made to Logan or why he's sided with this group. The first four issues will jump back and forth between past and present to show us what made him change his ways.

In the second issue, we'll see SUPERIOR Spider-Man show up. This is like the typical conversations we've seen between the two during fights except things are a little turned around this time. It's Wolverine that is seeking advice from Spider-Man.

Ryan Stegman said, "For the most part, I'm trying to do what I do well. With Paul's scripts, the characters are very -- they have a lot of character, so I just try to bring that out. I'm actually using a little less black than I did before, but that's only because we brought on David Curiel, the colorist, who I think is really good at texture."

In issue #5, we find out the heroes of the Marvel Universe aren't too happy with Logan's new status and he has a run in with Thor, in a bar, of course.

WOLVERINE #5 by Ryan Stegman
WOLVERINE #5 by Ryan Stegman

It might seem out of character for Wolverine to be...misguided like this but he did go through a pretty traumatic defeat in the previous volume. Losing his healing factor on top of that is changing how he works. It's obvious that fans will get angry over this not being the Wolverine they know but Axel Alonso mentioned fans will get even angrier toward the end of the year. There will be controversy. That's what gets people talking, right? Many have already compared this to Dan Slott's SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN.

The idea of Wolverine's healing factor being taken away took some convincing. It's likely it will return someday. But with this story, for the first time, Wolverine can be killed. Now he is under threat and it puts him in a new situation.

Wolverine's relationship with the X-Men will be "strained and distant" as he's left that life behind. What about Jason LaTour's WOLVERINE AND THE X-MEN relaunch in March? This new status quo will be addressed in the first few issues.

Here's a penciled look at WOLVERINE #3 and Art Adams' variant for #3.

Gerardo Sandoval will be doing an arc as well. Here's some inked pages from issue #5.

Remember when Magneto ripped out his adamantium? That left him without a healing factor too... We've already been down this road. Stop recycling ideas.

@lmothander: Actually that's not what happened. His healing factor went into overdrive because it didn't have to compensate for the Adamantium being there...This is pretty much a different road.

I've not been reading this series since I dropped it pretty early on when i saw the "superior" gimmick (because that's what it is, a "how long can stretch this out before a return to status quo" gimmic) being repeated. but without his healing factor:

1) surely wolverines skeleton would kill him

2) even if it does, every time he pops the claws he would hurt himself

that said I don't see how removing his healing factor makes any difference. Every Marvel heal has an unspoken healing factor that allows them survive injuries that would kill a normal person.

Beast created an antidote for the Adamantium Poisoning.

He stopped using his real claws and now uses a gauntlet that has claws on them.

@g_man: If I recall correctly, I believe Wolverine did lose his healing factor when Magneto ripped the Adamantium from Logan's body, although it was temporary back then. The trauma overloaded his healing factor in order to save his life, that's why he had to wear bandages over his hands back then too.

It was when Genesis tried to re-bond the Adamantium to Logan's bones, that his body rejected the process and his healing factor was sent into overdrive and he started to physically mutate and all that. Awe bandanna Wolverine, how we miss you so lol.

All of this looks so great though, I like the new armored look, I really hope they apply the gauntlets eventually all over the Marvel titles. I'm the kind of guy that likes a status quo change like this to last for long while. Superior Spider-Man can stay for ten more years if I had a say lol. Not to keen on Logan's new ink though, a rose on the bicep xD

Actually it IS for the first few issues. He had no healing factor and all the baddies found out and came for him. I remember him fighting Lady DS, Cylla, Bloodscream with no healing factor. Wolverine 75-88

Well I enjoyed issue #1 and am looking forward on what's to come. Just as Peter Parker was bound to return in ASM, so is Wolverines healing factor. I've learned to just enjoy the ride (that is if I like the ride to begin with).

This sucks. As has the entirety of Paul Cornell's time on Wolverine.

I just can't wait to hear that he is no longer writing Wolverine. Marvel basically continues to take a big giant **** on Logan. I simply don't understand why they are so self destructive when it comes to him.

"Axel Alonso mentioned fans will get even angrier toward the end of the year. There will be controversy. That's what gets people talking, right?"

^ That's a joke right there. Why would you intentionally anger long time and loyal fans? Hey you know what else gets people talking?...... Good stories. If controversy is what matters most then I'm very sad because comic books have now turned into "reality tv" if that's truly the case.

Yikes man, I think you seriously got down this whole fiasco right here. It just seems that right now Marvel wants to be as controversial as they can possibly be with their most popular heroes like Spider-Man and Wolverine. Drama, drama, and more drama. How can we amp up the drama some more? There is a big difference between trying a new direction and just writing shock value stuff. I would seriously like to see the numbers behind this, because I'm not sure all this nonsense is really worth downgrading someone who's most likely Marvel's most popular hero after Spider-Man.

Yep.

And because of all the noise Superior Spider-Man made, this is why Wolverine is being taken down this road. Not too subtle hint in that the two meet up soon.

I do like how Wolverine is being drawn though. That, I have no issue with and actually, loudly applaud. However, when taking the character's history into consideration -- seriously - (and this is from someone who has read every story with him in it (aside from probably a few guest appearances that didn't involve an X-Man) , I do not find it believable that Logan would turn or whatever else is being implied here. Plus, considering how one of his most closest and dearest friends had died recently (uhm, hello -- Rogue?) and he hasn't even made a boo sound over it, further annoys.

I wanted to like this -- I really did. I had hoped what I read from other fans would come to fruition. I was looking forward to finally, FINALLY, having a story where Logan's fighting skills and humanity could be showcased once again (when he was most likable as a character) but nope. Not here. From a cheesy reference to some convoluted new "Fastball Special" which made no sense because -- you know -- Wolverine is the ball, not the thrower? - to behaving, or rather, continuing to behave out-of character, there is just nothing to enjoy in this title. For me, as a Wolverine fan. I am sure it will be enjoyed by others. I appreciate the quality and talent of the writing, but the story itself, no. This bit about controversy and so on? Just makes me tired of hoping for better.

I might pick up this book if it matters to the Marvel Universe at large (I am sure there will be a tie-in somewhere which will necessitate it) but outside of that, I am seeing this as an alternate universe. And by that, I hope other 616 stories and characters are not involved in future issues.

@lykopis: I might recommend reading Jason Aaron's stuff. All of his Wolverine stuff. It's very rewarding for any big time Wolverine fan, and it's a crazy ride. Wolverine's time in Rick Remender's Uncanny X-Force is also wild, and if you look closely sometimes references Jason Aaron's work at times. Check out this listing off to the right. Marvel seem to be confusing Controversial and Unpopular as of late. Controversial at least implies that a decent proportion of people actually like it.........

Honestly, it's just hyper speculation from me at this point. But when the creative team is telling fans things are going to get "controversial", all I see is shades-of-superior and expect the worst. Expecting the worst is a good position for me to take, lately.

I already see it coming. Marvel please stop adding Thor into other comic books to make a story, because it seems like a few can write him nowadays.

Really? A punch from Wolverine can actually make Thor's head turn? He shouldn't have been fazed. Well now that I know what's going to happen, I can brace myself and get ready for the "Even more scans of why Thor is slower than Wolverine from Viners".

Enjoyed this issue because it shows a different kind of bad ass, and perfectly drawn, Wolverine but I feel like this series completely destroys the character development Wolverine has made and this especially makes him even more of a hypocrite in his argument against Scott. I'm all for evil-esque Wolverine but now wasn't the time to do it in my opinion. (I'll still be reading this series because its bad ass though)

I can wait and see where Cornell will take the loss of healing factor Wolverine. I mean, he has to exhibit top tier skill consistently now right? Right??? (Here's hoping that's what happens, and that whensoever the healing schtick comes back, use of skill sticks around.)

I can even be somewhat patient with this new evilesque "direction" they're taking Wolverine.(I can only hope Scott kicks him when he's down as well).

The serious, all encompassing issue I have is with the "freaken" rose tattoo. Seriously. Holy gimmicky Batman. Gimme a break.

You two took the words out of my mouth. Controversy does not a good comic make. But Marvel can deal with my anger with the loss of my cashflow. If enough people think like me, Cornell will be writing some D list hero soon enough and the maybe the big dogs like Axel may be put out to pasture.
