ORIGINAL SIN #7: What Made Thor Unworthy?

We know something makes him unworthy of Mjolnir.

If you haven't read this week's ORIGINAL SIN #7, there will be some tiny spoilers. It shouldn't be too much of a spoiler because when Marvel announced a female Thor was coming, back in July, it was also mentioned something happens to make Thor unworthy of Mjolnir.

The question is, what makes him unworthy?

In ORIGINAL SIN #7, the Avengers are fighting the true Nick Fury. They're not fully sure why he's now old or what his involvement in the death of the Watcher is but they're in full force to stop whatever he's doing. As Thor approaches Fury to take him out, Nick whispers something to Thor.

No Caption Provided

You can barely see what Nick said. Looks like Thor was even caught off guard.

No Caption Provided

What did he say, indeed? That's the big question. We've been wondering what Thor will do to become unworthy. It looks like maybe he already has done something. Is this something he just wasn't aware of? It's a little odd that if he committed some unworthy act, he shouldn't be able to wield Mjolnir. More likely he's done something that's caused a chain reaction and the final result was something really bad. Hearing about it is what made the Mjolnir unworthy clause kick in.

Still, if he did something, knowingly or unknowingly, you would think that'd become a factor, immediately. The result of this whisper was Thor being unable to lift the hammer.

No Caption Provided

With all of this, we still don't know what was said. I actually read this issue on my iPad after getting it through the Marvel app. So of course I tried zooming in as much as I could.

No Caption Provided

It almost looks like you can make out what was being said. Did they actually letter the big secret and then fuzz it out a little? Or is this just some gibberish to fool those of us that try to zoom in like this?

Let's hear from all of you. What do you think Thor did that made him unworthy? What did Fury whisper? I'm sure it wasn't that he left the water running during a drought on Asgard. What could Thor have done, without realizing it, that made him unworthy? Did he have to be aware of the act or was he aware and just kept it as his dark little secret?

After looking at this a while if they are actual words Fury said they look like possibly "Thor Balderson Karnilla" which, if true would mean Thor is the illegitimate son of Balder Odinson and Karnilla. That's just my theory though.

@johannschmidt: Maybe in an alternate universe, and it doesn't really make much sense unless Odin has been trolling Thor for countless millennia.

And after that hypothetical content for the Whisper Thor still decides call himself just Odinson!? More like something about his siblings (Balder and Aldrif) could be some of that words...

yeah, because Thor knows what grandpa Fury said, so even if it were some "Jedi mind trick" why would Thor keep referring to himself as the Odinson?

Back to this topic this whisper was only an instant plot device to make possible the announced change, this will never make any sense, because wasn't planned, there were no seeds in TGOT that could indicate that this was a possibility, doesn't have any foundations, it's just pure P.I.S. writing...

I said the same thing when this whole fiasco was announced. There was absolutely no evidence that Aaron was building to any of this. Luckily I didn't waste my hard earned cash buying this new relaunch.

My new theory is they are going to use this to blame Thor for ending the multiverse, fury likely tells thor he saw the future and it was all his fault or some nonsense, the guilt he felt over the death of countless worlds made him unworthy.

For heatblaze123: For the moment, depends how Marvel decides to "reset" things after Secret Wars, Thor could easily be back to his unworthy state as though none of it ever happened.

yeah, don't read too much into me saying new theory, it's was new to me when I thought of it, if its been thought of before I was simply unaware.

It's actually the first time I recall anyone mentioning it as a possible reason for Thor's unworthiness, though if they had I probably just missed it.

@vysecarma: not quite how it works... i believe it was something unknown to thor, and not mjolnir, that changed thor and made him unworthy, possibly something about his sister

I'd think that if it was something "known" by Mjolnir it wouldn't matter whether Thor knew about it or not... BAM!, unworthy. It's Odin's enchantment of Mjolnir which deems whether someone is worthy or not.

yeah that would be some sad writing.

Oh and if Odin could take away the real power from Thor and make him human and toss him down to the world of mortals then he could take it away from the Poser Thor as well with nothing but a blink of his eye and a smile. Its just crazy how they forget Odin is not just some other god sitting around doing nothing but stare into space at some god nursing home.

There have been occasional teasers referencing it, but no real clues as to what grandpa Fury actually said.

Marvel made Thor unworthy with this complete cop out. If Thor was unworthy, he would never had the hammer in the first place no matter what Fury said.

So I was going to eat at the cafeteria when I seen the cook.

I thought hmmm a whisper made Thor unworthy and so I would try it on the cook.

I whispered "I know what is in the stew"

He dropped his spatula and could not pick it back up.

He became afraid and ran out of the kitchen.

I had to pick it up and serve lunch and dinner.

I sure hope he becomes worthy again soon because I have things to do.

LOL!!! Unfortunately being worthy of the spatula isn't quite as cool as wielding Mjolnir, and it's a lot greasier too. :S

@monsterduc1000:

You are correct , its one big cluster fuck, because its all based on an enchantment on Mjolnir so the moment Thor screws up then no more Mjolnir, Mjolnir's enchantment doesnt need Nick Fury to step in and tell Thor when and how he screwed up Fury is not part of the enchantment, it would have just happened w/o Fury.

@antithetical: @owdell: What he said, also Thor realized that and was exiled from Asgard because of it, but he still remained worthy. With Thor being (supposedly) dead now, I don't think we're going to find out what made him unworthy anytime soon, let alone why Odin couldn't lift it (or why Odin is being such a b*tch)

My guess. He tells Thor he is Alduins kid. The Norse god of destruction and that's why he is unworthy because it was said he would be the destroy of Asgard.
