ORIGINAL SIN #7: What Made Thor Unworthy?

We know something makes him unworthy of Mjolnir.

If you haven't read this week's ORIGINAL SIN #7, there will be some tiny spoilers. It shouldn't be too much of a spoiler because when Marvel announced a female Thor was coming, back in July, it was also mentioned something happens to make Thor unworthy of Mjolnir.

The question is, what makes him unworthy?

In ORIGINAL SIN #7, the Avengers are fighting the true Nick Fury. They're not fully sure why he's now old or what his involvement in the death of the Watcher is but they're in full force to stop whatever he's doing. As Thor approaches Fury to take him out, Nick whispers something to Thor.

No Caption Provided

You can barely see what Nick said. Looks like Thor was even caught off guard.

No Caption Provided

What did he say, indeed? That's the big question. We've been wondering what Thor will do to become unworthy. It looks like maybe he already has done something. Is this something he just wasn't aware of? It's a little odd that if he committed some unworthy act, he shouldn't be able to wield Mjolnir. More likely he's done something that's caused a chain reaction and the final result was something really bad. Hearing about it is what made the Mjolnir unworthy clause kick in.

Still, if he did something, knowingly or unknowingly, you would think that'd become a factor, immediately. The result of this whisper was Thor being unable to lift the hammer.

No Caption Provided

With all of this, we still don't know what was said. I actually read this issue on my iPad after getting it through the Marvel app. So of course I tried zooming in as much as I could.

No Caption Provided

It almost looks like you can make out what was being said. Did they actually letter the big secret and then fuzz it out a little? Or is this just some gibberish to fool those of us that try to zoom in like this?

Let's hear from all of you. What do you think Thor did that made him unworthy? What did Fury whisper? I'm sure it wasn't that he left the water running during a drought on Asgard. What could Thor have done, without realizing it, that made him unworthy? Did he have to be aware of the act or was he aware and just kept it as his dark little secret?

This is just upsetting. The worst part about it is that Aaron didn't even let us know what was said. Its complete crap, we are totally left in the dark. Ruin Thor and don't even tell us what happened. I wasn't aware there were magic words for making Thor unworthy

@tensor: I don t know if he loses the arm , maybe only hurt s him, as you can see in the picture, Both hands...

Note: This also could point to who will be the new female Thor, my guess is Frigg Wodendottir, Thor blond granddaughter.

So I'm confused.... We saw old king Thor in the god butcher arc right... Who existed in the future, interacted with his past selfs, and still had the hammer right.....

So why didn't old Thor tell his younger self "yet mighty me, that dick nick fury is going to whisper to you and we become unworthy... So just go lalalalalala not listening, THE KING OF ASGARD HAS SPOKEN"

Original sin = trash

Considering that old Thor mentions to him about living on Mars at one point (Dr. Manhattan style), also mentions him gaining new powers, and even asked if he was still an Avenger... long story short a lot of stuff happened between Thor now and him. So why would future Thor warn him of everything ever when he actually makes a point of... "Okay, me telling you all this stuff is obviously a mistake...so never mind..."

@darkday: I agree with your point and yes warning Thor about the past could ruin the timeline and what not.... But isn't old Thor's existence only proof that this lame female Thor is nothing at all?? She will have the hammer for barely a year if that.... I just think original sin was a crummy event

If Thor lost the hammer, maybe Don Blake could find it out and pick it up and Thor can be Thor again! :P

Also! This female Thor is just another Superior Spider-Man thing to pull a Marvel and put the book at #1 and charge an extra dollar. Also, Superior Iron Man new armor looks kinda cool. Also, nothin wrong with Falcon as Captain America. Even though old Steve could be like old Bruce from DKR. Or he could raise a new Cap America that turns out to be his clone.

Not gonna lie the title of this article only a day after the issue came out made me a little mad. I wasn't excepting Original Sin to be what made Thor unworthy, but then this kind of gave it away...

Regardless I'm excited to find out what he said. This will probably be my favorite era of Thor. I didn't really care for Eric when he was Thor and I probably won't care very much about the new Thor, but I want to see where Unworthy Thor is going. Marvel has been setting this up for longer then people think with future Thor saying things like "I remember when I was once worthy." and who says All Father Thor is even worthy when he can just remove the worthy enchant being the All Father.

I am angry about this change, it seems like marvel is changing every thing just to make a buck, I mean they made Spiderman Superior Spiderman, and even though he was changed back I didn't like it, and now they get rid of Steve Rodgers as Captain America, they kill off Wolverine, and now they are trashing Thor!! Marvel, why do you hate me?!?!?!?!

No that is not a secret at all. He whispered if you do not stop using that arm like that your going to wind up getting tennis elbow of the gods it will get infected and they will have to cut it off.

Out of shame he could no longer pick up his hammer and know you know the rest of the story.

I think Fury just whispered "dude they want to give your hammer to a women , I think your screwed any way you look at this" and so Thor just dropped the hammer and pretended to not be able to lift it and he thought what bullshit. Then he went and ate a fly because it had been some time since he has been a frog and he sure as hell would choose unworthy over being a frog any day. Then again he could be a unworthy frog and that would suck ass to.

Lets just keep Mjolnir in Thors hands enough lame ass people saying , I was president of the drive through at Mcdonalds , um I worked at a dunkndonuts and oh yeah I was Thor for Year um that was sooo forking cool I was rocking the hammer big time.. If you wield Mjolnir, then you wield the power of Thor because you are worthy, is it not reasonable to think that this new Thor has become THE THOR. Not Thor Odinson, Thor. Just The Thor.

Whosoever holds this hammer, if he be worthy, shall possess the power of ... Thor

Correct

Whosoever holds this hammer, if he be worthy, shall possess the power of ... Thor, clear shall possess power of Thor, not become THOR, don t she have a name, she can have Thor power but with her own identity and name, don t you think...

I mean, that kinda of logic stands with what people have traditionally thought of in terms of how the inscription works but obviously status quo has been shaken up. What it still comes down to is that the book is still being called "Thor, The God of Thunder" starring the new Thor. I do not deny that Thor is always Thor Odinson's name but I do think that gods become symbols and if a being takes up the same responsibility that its within reason that becoming The Thor is possible.

Just some official quote from Aaron, "Series writer Jason Aaron emphasizes, “This is not She-Thor. This is not Lady Thor. This is not Thorita. This is THOR. This is the THOR of the Marvel Universe. But it’s unlike any Thor we’ve ever seen before.”

So I am not completely crazy suggesting this. I think this will be one of the most enjoyable runs of Thor to actually come out in recent years. I embrace the change.

@arthurkerr said:

Thor is his name. It was what he was gifted with when he was born. Look dear before I take our son home to Asgard it is your son. What will you name him.

Thor he will be called Thor.

So it was for all time and that is who he is. To simply take his name is wrong.

You are no longer worthy or must I whisper to you about what you did last summer?

Wow.

Oh and Yes I seen Hook awesome movie but nobody was Peter Pan but Peter Pan. The other kid was Rufyel or something like that.

There could be only one Peter Pan.

If you watched the second movie you would see he never left because of that very reason.

Great movie by the way.

Oh and RIP Robin Williams you did well in this life.

Great actor he will be missed.

I agree. Thor Odinson will always exist but things always change too. Look no farther than Old Thor. He renamed the Odinforce into Thorforce. The gods appear to be much more flippant about these things than we are. IMO Thor also the title of the God of Thunder and without his hammer he is no longer the God of Thunder. Whoever was worthy enough became the new God of Thunder, Thor.

As far as Hook goes, in that movie Peter Pan is gone from Neverland so long that there is a gap in leadership for the lost boys. At that point in time Pan became a title of the person who was responsible for leading such a group of kids. No one will deny that there was an original Peter Pan but the name became a symbol and thus Rufio became The Pan.

Thanks for the assertion to my lameness though. I was just trying to have some conversation with you fine fellows but apparently my opinion is inferior to yours. I'll just drop this over here since you appear to be in need.

You refer to the current comic line and I never said I like such a comic line. So to make your case by things this writer has done is not case at all. Thor is the god of thunder with or without his hammer. He does not need a weapon to be Thor just as any of the gods in the Greek myth needs anything special to make them whom they were or any other ones. Oh look Odin does not have his spear. um not Odin with or without his spear is Odin.

I did not know that about peter pan to me it should never be as that only one soul should have the title of something to me. You can update a character in time but I prefer the same soul to be the hero. In Thor's case Thor is his name not a title , Zeus is his name not a title , Loki is his name not a title , My name is whom I am it is not a title lol.

I forgot to point out it used to say untill it was tossed out after the Eric thing and Odin said no more would he put this on Thor. It used to read Whosoever holds this hammer, if he be worthy, shall possess the power of Thor."[1] Good thing Odin did away with that damn curse. But hey why worry over story arcs and such marvel does not.

So lets just say we change things up no longer a hammer but a laser gun and a giant slaying troll loving whip. Since back stories mean nothing at all and whispers in ears can make one unworthy hell lets just change everything. Odin is a title , Frigga is a midget hooker and Loki is a dog. Why stop changing things at all just let chaos rule and hell Sif can be a taking bird.

Marvel made Thor unworthy with this complete cop out. If Thor was unworthy, he would never had the hammer in the first place no matter what Fury said.

Absolute truth, on both counts.

Ha, my god, you go away for a little while and come back to such impotent, infantile whining.

"Oh, they're RUINING it!" *stomps feet and bawls*

I do love the use of all the classic argumentative "tactics" though. The invocation of "political correctness", the false comparisons, the sweeping generalisations, the "well, if you're going to do this then why not make X into Y" reductio ad absurdum, the desperate attempts to grab the moral high ground and characterise everyone who disagrees with you as stupid...

Really, it's just classic argumentative flailing.

But I particularly like the attempt to act like the wounded party in all this:

"I was just trying to have some conversation with you fine fellows but apparently my opinion is inferior to yours."

Ah, the old, "you challenge my opinion and I act like I'm not being ALLOWED my opinion"... genius. Dude, if you have an opinion, people ARE going to disagree with it sometimes. You act like you've never experienced it before.

This is the ultimate disrespect to not only one of the greatest heroes & warriors in the MU, but in all mythology; & done so off-handedly & poorly. Done by a character that has no connection or bearing to Thor's history or life, & done in an event book- not even done in Thor's own freakin' book! To me, & I have read Thor since I was a child- there is NOTHING Fury could say that would instantly make Thor "unworthy". I think of all the lessons in humility, the hardships, the sacrifices he has made- the battles he has fought, physically & metaphysically- living the life & knowing the pains & faults of a mortal, dying more than once, gaining the wisdom of the runes as Odin did, by sacrificing himself unto himself, breaking the cycle of Ragnarok, single-handedly restoring Asgard & every Asgardian, fulfilling the prophecy of the Serpent- all these things and more- including his indomitable will & courage- have proven that he is more than worthy. And yet freakin' old coot Fury is able to undo it all with a whispered phrase? I call BS!! Here we stood, at the edge of a Thor renaissance the likes of which I haven't seen since Simonson- an excellent run by Aaron that was getting praise everywhere, appearances in high-grossing, well-received films, making him more of a cultural icon & household name than ever before- & then Marvel pulls this crap? With one of their mightiest & bravest heroes? To me this proves it is nothing but a forced move to bring in their "All-New Thor", the goddess of identity theft, & interrupt what was otherwise a fantastic run for the sake of media pandering, PR controversy. Shame on you, Marvel, for doing this to one of your greatest, most legendary & iconic characters- a cultural icon, at the pinnacle of greatness. And shame on you, Marvel, for doing this to the fans, most of all. I have never berated Marvel like this before- over all these years- but I am now. Fans need to speak up. This isn't creativity. This is garbage.

What made Thor unworthy was Jason Aaron stupid writing, to force the identity theft, aka female that never will be Thor, because its not a mantle it s his birth name, and a old Norse male name, that marvel didn t created, only copy from Norse Mythology.

Marvel is only is interested in making headlines, disrespecting Thor and his past of honer, bravery and the Valhalla spirit, and by making this, it s disrespecting Thor long time fans.

Yeah you're right! How dare they disrespect this fictional character based on another fictional character! Jason Aaron is a stupid writer, and there is plenty of proof with Thor God of Thunder, a piece of work so horrible that it made me care about a character I never cared about. It's not like Jason Aaron hasn't proved himself with the character over the past year or so, so we should definitely judge what this next story is like before it's even out! Marvel is definitely only interested in making headlines and the decades of their work proves it because you often hear about their comics making headlines in mainstream media aside from the movies!

@darkday: I agree with your point and yes warning Thor about the past could ruin the timeline and what not.... But isn't old Thor's existence only proof that this lame female Thor is nothing at all?? She will have the hammer for barely a year if that.... I just think original sin was a crummy event

Actually his existence doesn't invalidate hers at all. Old Thor wasn't actively wielding Mjölnir when we originally see him. Heck at the point we are introduced to him, he is more or less the last god in the universe and he has been under constant assault as the king of Asgard. From his comments along the way about the Thor-Force (how it has been the Thor-Force longer than it was ever the Odin force), Odin (how he is more powerful than his father had ever been), and things in between we actually get a pretty good idea that with all he's been through the power of Thor that the hammer conveys ("Whoever holds this hammer, if he be worthy, shall possess the power of... Thor") has probably not been an issue one way or another.

@idontlikebirds: Just because Aaron made a good work in God of Thunder do you think i will give him or Marvel a free pass, like normally fans b... give...

His writing in this issue Original Sin 7, in my opinion was bad and stupid, just making way to female Thor, with no valid argument that explain s how he become unworthy.

I don t give free pass to anyone, i don t sing this song like you sing with marvel and Jason...

What would shake any man? Finding out that unknown to you, you have a child. Fury whispered, "You have a son(or daughter)". Now Angela will take over as God of Thunder while Thor pays a visit to every female he's ever been with. That's a series in itself.

Is this entire post directed towards me? If so I don't recognize the majority of this as anything I have done. All I did was present a possibility that was strong enough for you to characterize it as the lamest bullshit you have ever seen. I don't mind people challenging my opinion or disagreeing with it but when it comes down to blows and assaulting their character based on their opinion, that is when you make it feel inferior. There are plenty of people talking in this thread being respectful of each other so I don't see why we can't operate on the same terms.

Whatever. Thor is awesome. Jason Aaron is awesome. Original Sin is kinda awful.

@teerack: that would be screwed up, if Aaron just made rhor permanently unworthy. It would kind of defeat the purpose and would basically be cheating to lift the hammer lol

No, it doesn't. Old Thor is Thor so far in the future that he says to current Thor that his power has been the Thor Force longer than it has been the Odin Force. Think about that for a moment.

Odin is the all father he has lived thousands of years and in Marvel been through God only knows how many cycles of Ragnarok. Cycles that I'll point out that the Asgardians more or less canonly remember after they are over. Future Thor then goes on to say that he has existed as he has longer than Odin. That puts future Thor in so far flung a future that we honestly don't even know if anything familiar to us as readers exists within his Marvel Universe. He is Thor as the last of the gods in the universe are being put to death... The Asgardians are immortal, time is meaningless to them, so again if new Thor stays Thor for a hundred years, it isn't even a foot note to someone like Future Thor. Honestly, we don't even know if Future Thor is worthy of Mjölnir, after all I feel like once you can confidently say that you are more powerful than Odin has ever been then what stops you from doing away with any enchantment that Odin might have created?

@darkday: I know hold old Odin is. But still, female Thor will eventually give up the hammer and marvel isn't gonna let her stay around for long. I don't think king Thor would do something cheap like that to lift mjolnir, he is definitely going to be worth again. He would just use his Axe or the odinsword if he wasn't worthy, not cheat. Also asgardians aren't immortal

This is clearly something that goes beyond just Aaron. This is the kind go thing that gets agreed upon multiple writers and editors before happening. I don't think there would be anything wrong with him never becoming worthy again because character flaws usually are what make a character interesting.

@teerack: actually there would be tons wrong with it. Jason Aaron has spent his whole Thor series showing why he is worthy. It wouldn't be a character flaw, thor already has those. It would defeat the purpose of take away how special mjolnir is. Removing the enchantment would also mean anyone can lift it. Its just hammer at that point. There's nothing to suggest king Thor isn't worthy. He wouldn't just remove the enchantment.

No group of writers is going to have thor using an Axe for the next few thousand years.

We have no idea what he would do. Honestly we don't even know what Old Thor's sense of justice is like, we also can't see the future and know how this run of Thor is going to turn out. In short, you don't have to like this, no one has to, but from a lore stand point there really isn't any argument against it. Heck, even people that are arguing about the name Thor are ignoring the fact that Donald Blake picked up the hammer and became Thor. Sure, they've tried to retcon that in different ways but none of it really sticks and Donald Blake was right back recently ...so yeah...Donald Blake became Thor from picking up the hammer. He isn't now, but that doesn't change the past.

And Asgardians are immortal in the sense that they do not age and die. They can be killed sure, but they are immortal in the way that vampires claim immortality. So, don't be that guy...

I guess she has to give up the hammer at some point but it could end up turning into a Stormbreaker/Beta Ray Bill thing eventually.
