Off YOUR Mind: How Long Should Superman and Wonder Woman be a Couple?

It's going to happen. There's no stopping it. Will it last 'forever'? We all have opinions, here's your chance to share your thoughts.

It's been a couple days since the news broke that Superman and Wonder Woman would be getting together. There's been plenty said about it from those that are strongly opposed to the idea and those who think it makes sense. That isn't what we're going to discuss today.

The fact is, this is happening. The issue most likely has already been printed and future stories are being worked on. I wrote about the possibility of Superman and Wonder Woman getting together over a year ago in June 2011. Basically I felt it could be something to explore but just as I feel Spider-Man and Mary Jane should be together, the same goes for Superman and Lois Lane. It's likely just a matter of time until they do end up back together.

The question for today is how long should the relationship between Superman and Wonder Woman last?

Could this happen in the New 52?!?
Could this happen in the New 52?!?

How much of these two being together do we want to see? How far should it be played out? Should it be a major story and last years (our time) or should it just be looked at and end after a few months (our time)? We know the two of them together has been explored several times over the years. How long should it be explored this time? Will this fit into their respective solo books?

Let us know below. Share your opinions on how long you think it should last and what sort of stories with the two you'd like to see. Let's try to keep it cleaner than that sneaky Superman.

Like Superman really was unaware of the possibility that hot lava would splash up at Wonder Woman. He's more careful than that. Clearly he was just trying to get her out of her costume. Notice how he tries to shift the blame on Wonder Woman.

@Utandi: Johns confirmed it in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. He said the relationship would be the new status quo and for some reason he said he'd enjoy the fact fans would be ****ed off by it. I bet he regrets saying that now.

For as little time as possible. The move seems very predictable and clichéd, and I'm already upset they have relegated Martian man-hunter.

I would love to see this story done right two powerful beings falling love and all the problems that arise with protecting the world, how the rest of heroes re-act, how the public would look at this, this could be a great storyline if it is thought out and done right.

I would say a year at the most is what I would prefer to see out of a relationship between Superman and Wonder Woman. I think both characters are at very vulnerable points in their lives, and so it makes sense, and seems very human, for them to seek companionship in one another. I would like to see this develop in such a way that it brings both characters closer together, but ends with them being just friends, and both have benefited from their time together. I really don't want to see a marriage come out of this. At least not right now.

As far as their solo books go I think the significant other should 95% of the time stay out of the other's books. Maybe a few panels here and there, but when I read a solo comic, I want to read about that characters adventures. I want to see them handle their business, not a love story .The same goes for the team books. It should be business first and pleasure later.

I never found this idea of a coupling interesting for reasons that many have already stated here. It's reeks of publicity stunt and I feel like with the current creative heads in charge of this decision it'll fair no better than Storm/Black Panther's relationship. Ideally this will appear and impact 0 issues of Azz excellent WW run. It can be the whole focus of Justice League for all I care, not like I read that over priced toilet tissue anyways.

@moywar700: two big problems with your argument; This isn't going to be KC Supes/Wondy. And the biggest of them all, Mark Waid isn't going to be writing this Geoff Johns is

Can you imagine how awkward the Justice League get togethers are going to be after they inevitably break up? Other heroes are going to have to pick sides, there's going to be secret text messages sent back and forth seeing if Supes or WW are seeing anyone. It's going to turn into Justice League 90210.

think about it, how does superman's powers work? he only conceals his true strength... he doesn't have levels or degree of strength like hulk and goku (dragonball) does... superman is always in control... so if emotions are involved, normal intimate scenes with a mortal/human has always been a wonder (atleast for me). how would a man of steel feel a kiss? or the retcon has already rectified all this? the most convincing (scientific) explanation is: his powers are advanced telekinesis/psychic abilities. it's not raw strength, or hardened bones and skin... his strength/powers are psionic in nature. meanwhile, diana's powers are magical and both empowered thru hardened practice.... they are the perfect match...

It really depends on how the relationship/ story is written. If it's executed well, the relationship should be for a long time. Years, months, maybe. Their relationship is definitely going to affect the Justice League and that'll be interesting.

But as long as it's NOT forever. Like G-Man has pointed out in this article, Superman belongs with Lois Lane. Period.

And when they break up... geez, the Watch Tower is going to be full of awkward silences...lol

My initial reaction was "ugh." But then I thought about it, and I thought "ugh" again. My only hope is that since Geoff Johns is writing it, it might not be so forced. Idk, we'll see.

As for Lois, well, their marriage is also a thing of the nineties, probably triggered by the short success of the TV show "Lois and Clark, The New Adventures of Superman". Before that, she never had any interest in Clark Kent, only in Superman, she always treated Clark like an idiot.

None of this is true. The marriage had nothing to do with the TV show. The couple was engaged in 1990 in Superman 50. Clark asked Lois to marry him before she knew he was Superman. He didn't tell her until a couple months later in Action 662 (1991 cover date). Lois wasn't happy with the news, had to decide if she wanted to marry Superman.

The TV show did not air until September 1993. Clark and Lois were supposed to get married in Superman 75 but the wedding was delayed because WB asked DC to wait for the TV show which was in production. They weren't even sure it was going to get on the air.

The TV show was responsible for the Death of Superman and Doomsday because the writers had to do something to stall. This is all documented in Les Daniels book : Superman: The Complete History (available on amazon). Daniels interviews Mike Carlin, the editor and other principles.

From Daniels' book:

“DC’s decision was that it would be a good idea to hold off the wedding and do it at the same time as the TV show, if it got that far” explained editor Mike Carlin. On the other hand he was faced with four monthly books and no story line. The writers had occasional Superman summit meetings to thrash out ideas, and “there was one where we literally came into it hoping to talk about the wedding with the TV people but the show got put on hold for a while and they weren’t there. We were stuck. And I do think there was resentment from the talent that they weren’t able to do what they planned” Carlin said. That might be the reason that, when somebody made a joke heard at every meeting the group finally took it seriously. They decided to kill Superman, and thus launched what proved to be the most widely discussed and publicized story in the history of the medium. “And those were the issues where we would have been getting Superman married” Carlin said."

It is also documented in a few documentaries. One can be found as an extra on the Superman : Doomsday animated movie DVD.

As for how long Wonder Woman & Superman will last? I guess as long as sales sustain it.

I would not mind seeinig this relationship develop slowly and carry on for a while taking it where ever the story leads it. Also I am concerned that the Wonder Woman depicted in the solo series is quite different than in Justice League and that is addresed. We all know that unless DC does something drastic like killing Lois off that Lois and Superman will eventually get together. I hope that when the Superman - Wonder Woman paring does break apart that the writing is up to the quality these characters deserve.

I would like to see it last for a while, at least more than a year our time. It would be cool to see WW crossover into the Superman titles and vice-versa. Also, maybe a trinity comic could come out of this with Batman being the awkward third wheel lol

Given Kal-El's and Diana's long life spans, Lois Lane and Steve Trevor, even Bruce Wayne, are just a moment in time, a soon to be memory. Like a pet hamster one used to love as a kid, the poor things will die much too quickly, just when we were enjoying them the most. No matter how much Superman and Wonder Woman love them.

What? D'you think sleeping with a god will make you immortal? Sure, ask the many human lovers Zeus and Aphrodite had haw it went.

And you are talking about things that are not meant to be?

Some people are too willing to condemn Clark and Diana to such suffering just to satisfy their childish idea of what is correct.

Okay, then. Let Superman marry the witch and Diana the moron. In a few years they'll be history and the two heroes will have an eternity to be together as they should. I'm cool with that.

And, by the way, Superman has Clark Kent to remind him of his humanity: a regular guy with a nine to five job and a regular salary, who goes to the market for food and, occasionally, the mall to buy cheap clothes and shoes, who rides the bus and subway, stuck like a sardine like the rest of us. He responds to a grouchy boss like you and me, has annoying neighbors and job mates as everybody does. Sees his loved ones pass away. Suffers seeing the suffering around him...

He doesn't need Lois Lane for that, he experiences it first hand. Stop using that idiotic argument.

If this "relationship" it's happening before Superman and Lois Lane, I'm cool with it. But we all now that Superman and Lois Lane are destined to be together. The problem is that at someone point, Superman and Wonder Woman's relationship it's gonna be full with conflicts and problems. I don't know, let us hope a good writer and editor are working on this.

I agree with a lot of your points. An added dynamic is the fact that she is more 'human' than he is, being created by divine beings that created humanity while he is not even a 'man' in the human sense - he is technically a Kryptonian male so physical similarities aside, he is not a human. Even so, the way human societies evolved from a rougher, more ruthless general societal schemes towards more governmental, mundane social mores somewhat reflects the lessons each can learn from each other. While each is teaching the other how to behave one way in a certain situation, the other could teach the opposite in another situation. Superman needs a ruthless side against more powerful opponents and Wonder Woman - well, not sure what she can learn from Superman - she seems more level-headed in general!

That brings up a really good point. They did say that Superman would have to be more savage when they put him up against someone who is more powerful than him in the upcoming storyline linking Superman, Superboy, and Supergirl. What better than having Wonder Woman teach him hand to hand against an equal or more powerful foe.

personally i don't mind this, as the article points out this is not the first time they've been paired together however i really think Clark and Lois ultimately belong together. i don't mind supes and wonder woman together for maybe a year or two (our time) but that really would depend on how well it's written. i just hope they don't do a superman, wonder woman, batman love triangle that would be awful.

I think it should last for a year to two years maximum (our time). Superman does ultimately belong with Lois Lane but it will be nice to get a change from that at least for awhile.

Obviously Superman has to end up with Lois. That's a given. As for how long Wonder Woman and Supes will last I hope not very long. The former lovers angle is much more interesting than the current flame angle is.

I liked what one commentator said about this. He said that this made Superman seem even less human. One of Superman's biggest problems is that a lot of people can't relate to him, and giving him an Amazon, warrior princess, demigod girlfriend is just going to make him even more unrelatable. A big part of Superman's story, or at least it should be in my opinion, is Clark trying to figure out how to be human. He's basically a god among mortals, so he continually is struggling to find his place on Earth. Writers need to focus more on that. I think they'll be a couple for a time, but in the end Lois is just a better fit for Superman.

And to be honest, I'm more concerned with how Superman is going to fit in the Wonder Woman comic. It's been one of my favorite reads every month since the relaunch, and I think inserting a boyfriend would mess with the story. She is definitely the more interesting character of the two after the New 52 reboot.

Hey you know what, maybe there will never be a right time to do it, but it needs to be attempted with a serious face just to knock it off the list of possibilities. For all we know it'll be a change in comics that'll stand for the next 80 years, it's possible. Either way I'm buying that first relationship issue lol

I prefer batman and Wonder woman I found it tresting in the animated series I would like it to be explored more in the comics.
