Off YOUR Mind: How Long Should Superman and Wonder Woman be a Couple?

It's going to happen. There's no stopping it. Will it last 'forever'? We all have opinions, here's your chance to share your thoughts.

It's been a couple days since the news broke that Superman and Wonder Woman would be getting together. There's been plenty said about it from those that are strongly opposed to the idea and those who think it makes sense. That isn't what we're going to discuss today.

The fact is, this is happening. The issue most likely has already been printed and future stories are being worked on. I wrote about the possibility of Superman and Wonder Woman getting together over a year ago in June 2011. Basically I felt it could be something to explore but just as I feel Spider-Man and Mary Jane should be together, the same goes for Superman and Lois Lane. It's likely just a matter of time until they do end up back together.

The question for today is how long should the relationship between Superman and Wonder Woman last?

Could this happen in the New 52?!?
Could this happen in the New 52?!?

How much of these two being together do we want to see? How far should it be played out? Should it be a major story and last years (our time) or should it just be looked at and end after a few months (our time)? We know the two of them together has been explored several times over the years. How long should it be explored this time? Will this fit into their respective solo books?

Let us know below. Share your opinions on how long you think it should last and what sort of stories with the two you'd like to see. Let's try to keep it cleaner than that sneaky Superman.

Like Superman really was unaware of the possibility that hot lava would splash up at Wonder Woman. He's more careful than that. Clearly he was just trying to get her out of her costume. Notice how he tries to shift the blame on Wonder Woman.

Thinking logically WW is the only woman he really can be with, "man of steel woman of Kleenex" and all that considered.

@cloudzackvincent: I'm with you. That's pretty silly logic. Differences build strong relationships, either way. They are both pretty sophisticated folks.

My answer is kind of complicated. Basically, I could care less about the love lives of heroes.

But... if Jim Lee is going to keep doing these cheeseball, sexualized-but-totally-not-sexual covers, then I want it to end before it gets started.

Having them as a couple is such a bore I think it would be cooler if WW was with Batman but we know that wouldn't last either.

Give it at least 5 years. Given the history and potential between them I think that's the bare minimum that you can give the relationship to do it justice.

Of course the fanboy in me wishes for "forever" but I'm trying to be practical about it. I'M SO EXCITED!!!!!

All this talk about how "incompatible" they are cause he's a farmboy, and she's a warrior, it can never work, just seems like complete nonsense. Is it beyond reason that he can influence her to become more human, and she can strengthen him in other ways? Relationships are about finding each others strengths and complementing them. If the writers take readers on the journey to figure out these things fully, then if both characters legitimately decide what they want is not with each other, then I will accept it and not look back. But this "It's meant to be/ not meant to be" crap has got to stop if we want to move the medium forward

I just hope they don't mess it up. I've never liked this pairing, but if DC feels they have to do it, at least, I hope they do it right. Superman and Wonderwoman haven't shown any kind of romantic attraction to one another, so I feel that the relationship comes a bit out of nowhere, like Storm's and Black Panther's. I really hope DC handle this better than Marvel did.

Until now, both characters had love interests who were part of their respective supporting casts, and didn't much importance outside their relationship with the superheroes. If Supes and WW becomes an item, it might be interesting to see how their writers will handle the relationship, how important said relationship will be for eah character and how it will impact their solo titles if it does. Will they see each other outside of their time in the League? Where will they go for a romantic diner? What will be the place of Clark Kent in the relationship? How will Steve Trevor react? I'm curious to see answers to all of these questions and more.

How long will it last? Until DC liberals decide to change it. DC is just like Star Trek and other comics. Relationships work only to a point then it comes time to change. How many DC couples have lasted more than a few years before someone dies, differences tear them apart or we get some universal restart? All the GL's? Hawkman? Swampthing? Flash was on and off. Atom? Now the rewrite of Alan Scott throws his out the window. Shall I go on? Personally, I thought the two would be good together (see Kingdom Come) but in the DCU, I'll believe it when I see it five years. Long term, couples just do not make for good stories and this one? What story lines are you really going to have about the "super couple" that's going to be THAT interesting?

Them both being immortal, I usually just assume the continuity goes like this: Lois and Clark fall in love and get married, and Lois eventually dies of either natural causes or occupational hazards many years later. After a mourning period, Superman and Wonder Woman grow closer and eventually end up together for a long, long time, being virtually ageless. It really seems inevitable and in no way diminishes Lois and Clark's relationship or love for each other.

I know the Justice League cartoon leaned heavily on a potential Wonder Woman and Batman relationship, but if Clark's true love is Lois, Bruce Wayne is just as tied to Selina Kyle. Seriously, Batman has Catwoman OR Talia al Ghul as legitimate love interests. Adding Wonder Woman to that same list makes it a bit preposterous, given Superman has been exclusively paired to Lois Lane with no other serious alternatives.

Now with Wonder Woman and Superman being an item, it would be a great opportunity to re-introduce Maxima. The inherent potential for a royal smack-down between her and Wonder Woman would be seriously entertaining. Lois would put her hands on her hips and scowl at Maxima, but Wonder Woman could actually DO something about the Queen of Almerac's advances. And don't tell me that cat-fights won't sell comics.

In keeping with your request I will ignore the fact that they aren't really a good match and limit my response to a temporal one. A year and a half ,two years tops to explore the relationship properly is best. While I don't like the idea anything shorter would be too much of a gimmick.

Fact is, no one gives a damn about Lois nowadays. Most people think her name is Lana Lane, thanks to Smallville.

Your ignorance is almost not even worth responding to. But people love Lois Lane. She's the oldest female character in comics and is probably a lot more widely recognized than you'd think. Besides even with Lois not currently dating Superman, Wonder Woman is still a terrible match for Superman. Just as bad as Superman is for Wonder Woman. She doesn't need the only man in the DCU who can over shadow her as her leading man. They're bad for eachother. And those who don't see that don't understand the characters, story telling, or romance.

Your fanboyism is almost not even worth responding to. Superman is the perfect man for WW. Superman is the kind of man those man-haters amazona needs.

So false. First of all just because Superman and Wonder Woman have the same superpowers and both wear red and blue doesn't mean they're a perfect couple. Superman doesn't need a godess and Wonder Woman doesn't need a god. Beyond the fact that Superman and Lois are perfect for eachother for so many reasons, Superman would be terrible for Wonder Woman. She's THE most recognizable and powerful heronie in comics and possibly all media. She absolutely should NOT be with the only man she has to play second fiddle to. Wonder Woman with Superman automatically puts her in his shadow and diminishes everything about her character.

They don't work together. Sorry.

I will admit, I have always thought Bruce was a bit more compatible with Diana than Clark. BUT. People wanted new, fresh story lines. Maybe this has been tried before between Supes and WW, but I think the writers are going to try things with a new approach. Maybe because they are so different, it could work [opposites and all that jazz]. So long as everything works out for an interesting arc, does it really matter how long this lasts for? I think people should give the writers a chance to release some issues on this before everyone gets their knickers in a twist. Otherwise, it is just a matter of fandom tradition for Lois and Clark that is shooting this down before it even gets off the ground. I have nothing against Lois [especially since they reworked her personality in recent years], but maybe writers get tired of writing the same type of character development for 50+ years between her and Clark? I think this WW and Supes bit has the potential to make for a good read. Six months or even s year's love triangle between Clark, Lois, and Diana could make for some interesting development in the characters we've never been able to see before. If Clark and Diana are compatible, it could last a long time. But, only if they can connect on more than a physical level.

@XImpossibruX: You just described Lois as a horrible and shallow women and Superman as a whimp... you know that right. It is a horrible relationship if it is based on the fact that Lois fell in love with Superman first and that Clark had to accept that... It is horrible because then she fell in love with not the real person but the outer image of a person since Superman is Clark Kent and most things Clark Kent is, Superman also is

Please dont reduce Superman to just a farmboy. He is more than that. He is an investigative and accomplished journalist. He is the man of steel, the chosen one sent to earth, only survival of Krypton. Heis arguably the strongest hero in DCU.

He also fights for truth justice and the American way. He exposed corrupted business man, take them down with his articles, writes about corruption and poverty. Mild Mannered does not mean shy and quiet. You obviously don't know anything about Kal.

i can't really comment on the supes-diana relationship as the comic is not even out yet... but ur logic seems flawed to me. first off we should keep in mind that this is not the real world... and "the farmboy and the princess" romance is one of the oldest and the best used archetype in fictional stories... look at Garion and Ce'Nedra, Rand and Elayne, Eragon and Arya..the list goes on. now i m not saying that Clark and Diana will make a great couple.. just that the reasons you gave as to why they won't work holds no water in a fictional setting.... whether their relation works or not will totally depend upon the quality of writing.

@Godstaff said:

I want this to last for as long as possible. Someone said a decade? Okay, I buy.

Why the hell everybody is so surprised (and many of you upset) about this couple is absolutely incomprehensible to me.

They have a lot of history together, a lot of hints and innuendo of a mutual romantic interest, and it's been 40+ years now. Where do you think all those images of they kissing and fighting together and each other, all made not by fans, but by great artists of the comic industry came from? Yep, from the comic books pages and covers. Every other Elseworld ends up with them together. And let's not forget Kingdom Come was canon before the reboot.

Let me remind all of you ranting about "Wonder Woman is Batman's girl" that, first of all, Diana is nobody's "girl", and that pairing was cooked by Bruce Timm for the Justice League animated series in the late '90s and the first years of the new century, there was no history before that. None of them had any romantic interest in the other. In fact, during the nineties, during George Perez take on Wonder Woman comic books, she was very much in love with Superman. Yes, even when the JL cartoons were being aired.

After the cartoon's first seasons, there were vague mentions of a romantic possibility between BM and WW in a few JLA issues, and one kiss during the Blackest Night Event. In JLA #90, Diana has an experience with a mind scanning machine, imagining her possible lives with Batman. After that, both of them agreed they were NOT meant to be. Period. The rest is fan-fantasy, nothing more.

As for Lois, well, their marriage is also a thing of the nineties, probably triggered by the short success of the TV show "Lois and Clark, The New Adventures of Superman". Before that, she never had any interest in Clark Kent, only in Superman, she always treated Clark like an idiot. How can somebody say she loves a guy when she doesn't even know his whole person, it really escapes me. For years Superman had several romantic interest besides Lois: Lory Lemaris, Lana Lang, Cat Grant, etc. Even though Lois was a constant, it seemed to be an on and off kind of thing. The stupid notion that she "grounded" him, that she is his connection with humanity is disrespectful to the efforts of Jonathan and Martha Kent, the human couple who raised Clark, grounding him and teaching what being human means to an alien child.

Many, many times Lois prevented Superman to do his job because she was in some kind of crisis or a life threatening situation. Except that one time when she kept calling Superman to save her father, and he went to save someone else instead. Someone much more important to him and the safety of the world. Who? Good guess: Wonder Woman. That was during the "Our Worlds at War" saga. Did anyone say that they are boring because Diana would never be in danger of dying? Hm.

Lois is his destiny? She will die too soon, old and weak (but still annoying) and he will go on living for who knows how long without change. I'd say that an immortal Amazon is clearly the one he will settle down with, exactly like in Kingdom Come.

Destiny my "S", says Kal.

As you can see, there's nothing new about this.

Everything I've just said is FACT, so, unless you try to refute me with hard cold facts, please don't bother.

Leave this be. It only can be a good thing. Let the many of us who still enjoy and buy the New 52 books have our entertainment peacefully. Because that's what it is: a beautiful, funny and, some times, compelling entertainment. It's not a cause. It's not a crusade.

Let's hope DC writers do a good thing out of this. That's the only way it will last.

Kingdom Come was apart of the miltiverse right? Anyway, good points. I think Supes and Diana should be able to date whoever they wanna date. I hope they get a sexy romantic scene in one the books too. By the way, Diana isn't immortal anymore. She has an age. She's 23.

I think they should take their time with this one. Let it go on for a year maybe two. If done right it could work out great. You could make Lois go after Superman and then Wonder Woman pull her weave out her head for talking to her man.

A "more serious" Diana-Kal relationship usually come later, becoz time siding on them, then for a mere human.

i read some writer comment about it, and one said... both diana-kal have a potensial for a good story, but the question is if both are superhuman, why supes need clark kent identity? after i read it i asked in return (in my mind) so do superman need a human lover to be "human"???? i don't think i agree 100% with it.

so i hope... don't rush this supes-ww thing. if they "belong" each other... i hope their love story isn't such a try-out.

I agree on the secret identity issue. Honestly the idea of a secret identity has never fit Superman because he does not wear a mask the suspension of disbelief is pretty much shattered. It is not believable on the face of it and when you add things like facial recognition technology that villains like Lex would use, it is just too much of a stretch to believe that no one would know. So if they dump Superman having a secret identity I think it would be more realistic and believable and take the character into knew territory.

@starrk_coyote: I know Clark is not a soldier or warrior but this relationship could and would enrich both charackter and the story progress in my opinion. Were much more intresting for me to see them both in a story than only him rescues Lois from some terrorists for exaple.

I think it is a great idea and feels completely natural. The love interest for both characters never made sense. Steve Trevor always seemed beneath WW. Sort of like the creator was afraid of a strong woman had felt the need to saddle her with a tool of a love interest. Lois Lane at least works as a character but in both cases there is a basic biological problem that would prevent intimacy, their super strength something you would simple not be controlling during the throws of passion. That was fine in the pre 80s when comic books were saddled with the comic codes and were written for kids. But lets face it, no romance can survive for long without a physical connection. It's like ice cream with the sugar and fat or party without music and booze or rock and roll without drugs and excess. Just doesn't work.

So yes it is works beautifully. When DC gets cold feet and brings back Lois it will be a dark day. I say stick to it. Just think it could eventually lead to a new super hero with a child.

The other thing that would make it interesting is that although they have some similarities they have some core personality conflicts. Superman at the end of the day is a big boy scout. WW is a warrior and will kill if necessary. That is a fundamental philosophical difference that could make for some good stories.
