Off THEIR Minds: Should Batman be Allowed to Have Another Robin?

Chances are it's going to happen but should it be allowed?

Batman and Robin. The Dynamic Duo. The Caped Crusaders. You can easily have Batman without Robin. The two just go together so well.

We've seen after Jason Todd [originally] died that Batman needed a Robin. Having a Robin is what keeps him in check. Over the years we've seen the notion of Robin grow into something bigger. The role of Robin wasn't just to be a comedic sidekick but was now seen as a partner for Batman.

With the recent events and the dangers the role has caused in the past, the question is, should Batman be allowed to haver a Robin? We could debate this but we decided to ask creators this question at Emerald City Comicon. Check out what Joshua Hale Fialkov, Kyle Higgins, Brian Buccellato, James Robinson, Peter Nguyen, James Tynion IV, Matt Fraction, Josh Williamson, Jim McCann and Sam Humphries think about this topic.

Batman should have a Robin but are the risks too great? Is it a matter of child endangerment? Does Batman have the right to encourage kids to take on a dangerous role?

Since this is the "New 52" does this open up for Cassandra Cain???

Either Tim or Cassandra should come back to fill the partner role, or simply, the legacy should be put to rest, like in most future batman stories (im sure joker would agree) and in all honesty there is no one worthy of the title now, bring in a new face and robins just a cheap gimmick of a 'bat' crusading character.. (like Stephanie brown or batwoman) why would batman be so stupid as to bring in another liability for weakness into his career? He's not, because he doesn't need to be kept in check, that's what his F*cking family is there for. Batman would never do something so unnoble and disrespectful as replacing his own son. He's simply going to make himself stronger, not ask for a lighter load.

One dead Robin is a tragedy. Two or more dead Robins is criminally negligent. In a just fictional universe, Bruce would arrested for felony child endangerment/abuse. He should be going to prison, not getting a shiny new sidekick that he will eventually let get murdered.

Batman is pretty much ruined for me. He got his 10-year-old son killed. I can't see how he can even live with himself, let alone ever let someone else be Robin. My ability to suspend disbelief only goes so far.

Heck no! These guys only have a 50% survival rate. (40% if you count pre 52 Stephanie Brown) DSS has to be all over this guy.

Matt Fraction staring deeply into the camera while eating a muffin FTW

Realistically, no, but comics aren't realistic and every Robin that has died, died because Batman wasn't there for them. Dick died in the lump's world because he took the mob on by himself because Batman never existed, Jason died because he went off to the Middle East on his own, Steph died because she was fired and wanted to prove herself, Damian died because Batman told him to stay home. Heck, even Babs didn't get hurt until after she quit. I think people are totally misreading Damian's death because they are looking at it with a bias towards realism when, in context, it's the separation of Batman from his kids that leads them to their deaths and not their relation with him in general.

I don't think people should be running around dressed like bats and fighting crime without a gun, but I do love to read the stories about them. I just don't want Robin to be a 10 year old again. That's so lame. If you're going to say he's been augmented in a test tube you might as well make him older too.

Of course he's going to have a Robin. If he doesn't have a Robin then what's the point of having a title called "Batman and Robin"? If they're going to leave him Robin-less for a while, then they should drop the book, but I think we all know that it's a company bi-law at DC that Batman books cannot be cancelled except in the event of a company-wide relaunch. Ergo, whether it's just Tim or some new Robin, Batman is going to have another partner in the foreseeable future, because god forbid we do anything other than add to the number of mediocre Bat-books on the stand

Should he be "allowed"? I do think it wise to have that conversation in the books with the characters to address that. But I agree with Mr faction, as a father my kids go Nut Shit whe they see Robin, They watch season 4-5 of The Batman non-stop because of Robin, Young Justice, and Teen Titans are all in heavy rotation due to Robin.

Batman might not need a Robin, but Dc comics needs a Robin without a question

Nah, just have Batman be solo now I say. Yeah, we'll get a Robin whether we like it or not, but I just don't think he should have one for now.

I think Damien will return. Grandpa had resurrection technology. No new robin needed. Batman & robin will have a "guest" for a few issues leading up to an event to bring his ass back. DC is to predictiable

Robin has become a very important character in the Batman universe so yes, there should definitely be a Robin!

Robin is one of my favorite characters in the Batman universe. I agree with Kyle Higgins, James Tynion IV and definitely Matt Fraction (he was hilarious!!).

"Should Batman be allowed to have a Robin?" If you're speaking in realistic terms, heck no! But comic books are NOT realistic!

Though I don't think there should be a Robin for a LONG time. If they decide to bring back Damien then that would be awesome but if not, I would like to see Stephanie Brown as Robin:)

This debate is all well and good but creepy/awesome stalker Matt Fraction at the very end was what I so gleefully took away from this.

Yes. It's the Dynamic Duo. They need to be together!

If we decide that Batman is not allowed to have another Robin...your the one who has to tell him...

cause I ain't doing it...

Damian will be back in another year or two... I do wonder if while Damian is gone whether Tim Drake's costume will revert to a more Robin-like form...

He should take Tim Drake back as Robin

If Superman can fly (something that would kill anyone else if they tried to do what he could do)and carry people high up in the sky without them dying from lack of oxygen, then I think it's okay for sidekicks to exist. It's fiction and its not bound by rules of reality. So lets stop acting like he is putting some kid in danger.

Just because some hack writer hates the concept of robin enough to kill the character doesn't mean the concept doesn't work. Dick was Robin for forty years and Tim twenty. Can we please stop allowing bad writers write for any Robin characters especially writers that don't respect the concept, legacy, and mythos? Robin works, you just need great writers that love him the way writers love solo Batman.
