Off THEIR Mind: Comic Creators On Who the Next Bat-Villain Should Be

Even the pros are fans and like to speculate over who they'd like to see on the big screen.

As we all wait for any bit of information on the next Batman film, one of the biggest questions we all have is who should the next villain be? Rather than get our thoughts on this, Comic Vine thought, why not ask a few comic book professionals (who are also comic book fans) who they want to see as the next big screen Bat-villain? We contacted a few pros to give us their top picks.

No Caption Provided
Keep in mind this is in no way any official confirmation or endorsement for the next Batman movie. This is just the thoughts of some really cool people who just happen to work in the comic book industry.
 == TEASER ==
Mark Waid (Editor-in-Chief BOOM! Studios, writer: Irredeemable, Incorruptible, Amazing Spider-Man, Kingdom Come):

I'd love to see Catwoman in the next Batman movie. Given where the character was left-- a true vigilante, a wanted man skirting the law--it'd be fascinating to cast Catwoman as his opposite number in that world, a bad girl tempted to do good.

Jeph Loeb (Executive Vice President, Marvel Television, writer: Ultimate X, Hulk, Superman/Batman, Batman: Hush):

Batman has sooo many...  Catwoman revised through Nolan's eyes would be my first choice.
Solomon Grundy would rock.  And it'd be awesome to see Hush!

Mike Allred (Artist/Creator: Madman, I Zombie,  Wednesday Comics, X-Statix, Catwoman):

The best have been done. More than once too. I think Man-Bat would be very interesting, or Clayface.

Mel Caylo (Marketing Manager Archaia Entertainment):

I think Christopher Nolan has done a stupendous job with reinvigorating the Batman movie franchise, and his interpretations of Ra’s al Ghul, the Scarecrow, Two-Face and the Joker in the first two movies have renewed my excitement for the Dark Knight on film. I know the Riddler is rumored to appear in the third installment, but the villain I would most like to see show up is Catwoman, and not because I’d like to see a beautiful actress suit up in shiny patent leather—well, ok, maybe a little. Rather, I’d most like to see Nolan’s interpretation of Catwoman/Selina Kyle because he is so good at transforming these outlandish, flamboyant and over-the-top comic book characters into a real person with depth—an individual with an agenda with a reason for their madness. With all due respect to Michelle Pfeiffer and Halle Berry, I think audiences have been waiting for a better cinematic portrayal of the feline seductress, and I, for one, hope the filmmakers heed my request!

Jim McCann (writer: Hawkeye & Mockingbird, Dazzler, Return of the Dapper Men):

I think Bane would be pretty cool, but he'd have to be funded by someone, maybe Hush?  Harley Quinn is pretty great too, but without the Joker may be tough to intro to a film audience...

Jimmy Palmiotti (writer: Jonah Hex, Random Acts of Violence, Time Bomb, Countdown to Final Crisis, Catwoman, Power Girl):

No more supervillians...the latest movies established as close as we should get to costumed villains. I think the next film should be about Batman having to deal with there being no reason for Batman to exist because the police have become so efficient...so Batman haunts a new town in South America that thinks he is a demon where he takes down drug lords.

What do you think about their ideas? Have their thoughts changed your opinion? When do you think we'll find out who the next villain will be?

I would love to see a live action adaptation of mask of the phantasm but then theres that tricky problem of replacing heath ledger. while i think it could be done it is big shoes to fill.

I also like Captain13's idea which could then segue into a new batman while Bale becomes sort of a mentor, like a batman beyond theme almost.

I'd like to see Catwoman (played by Emily Blunt) as an anti-hero/love interest of Batman, Riddler (played by David Tennant) as the main villain and a return from Cillian Murphy as Scarecrow. His appearence in Batman Begins was a little disappointing in my opinion, no big fight between him and Batman.

I still think Black Mask would be the best villain for the Nolan universe with Catwoman a very interesting new love interest. Bruce, reeling from the loss of......... that women he loved whose name i totally forget..... and in a place of true vigilantism is drawn to a sexy, teasing thief who walks just the other side of the line that he currently treads between good and bad who he becomes obsessed with. She returns his feelings and a tug of war between good and bad happens in both parties. All the while, in the void left at the end of the last film, a new gang starts taking control in the streets, a more violent, dangerous gang lead by the mysterious Black Mask.......

I think for this film The Riddler and Black Mask and/or Penguin should be well suited.

I see many people throwing around the idea of Bane working for someone like Black Mask.  It can't work, to me, because Bane is about controlling his own destiny, and not letting someone else achieve his goals for him.  His sole mission was to study, observe and finally bring down Batman, and it was done magnificently.  If not Bane, then I wonder if Nolan could pull off hinting at Azrael as a teaser to the audience.

Nolan said he wanted it to be realistic so super powered heroes are out Catwoman, Riddler, Pengiun, or (Shudder) Black Mask..

I also don't think Hush would come out as entertaining look at Ra Al Ghul Batman begins bored me to death because all the talking and lack of a good notable villian that everyone knows.

I think the villains should be the Riddler, Penguin, and Catwoman.
The Riddler would be the main villain, a narcissist who wants everyone to know he is smarter than they are, which is why he leaves clues and riddles. This would give Batman a chance to show his detective skills more and more, show he isn't just a vigilante but a detective and scientist too.  Riddler would be closer to the Joker type than any of the other criminals in the film, closer than the Penguin and Catwoman.
The Penguin would be taking over the mobs in Gotham, his part would be as big as the Mob was in the Dark Knight.  (Showing the escalation in the criminal element.  Having a Joker type "freak" taking over the mobs.)  He isn't a mutant or anything, just a guy who dresses up in a tuxedo and top hat, and maybe like Penguins.  He is considered a freak, because of his quarks but he isn't a mutant or anything like that.  He doesn't have umbrella weapons.
Catwoman would be similar to her role in JLA: the Nail or in Batman: Hush, where she is introduced as this criminal burglar, not a real threat but not to be trusted.  Batman knows he should stay away, but he doesn't.  During the coarse of the film she becomes a major part of Bruce's life, an allie and maybe a serious love interest too.  She is more like Batman than the Riddler, Penguin, the Joker, Scarecrow, or even Ras.  She dresses in a suit that aids her crimes, but she doesn't want to hurt anyone or see anyone innocent get hurt.

My idea for the film is that after Bruce decided to become Batman he didn't really understand the ramifications,
then, with the events of Dark Knight (the Joker, Rachel, Dent) Bruce is falling into a darkness that he may never get out of.  He spends more time as Batman and less as Bruce, he barely talks to Alfred these days and avoids Fox, and he can't talk to Gordon anymore.  This is where Catwman could fit in, he feels a connection to her.
Batman is becoming more angry and resentful of being Batman, his actions are more aggressive against crime.  During the coarse of the movie Alfred, Fox, Gordon, and Selena, must help Bruce pick himself back up and the end result of the movie is that Bruce is finally at a good place with being Batman.  He is now adequately prepared for it.

Deadshot, KGBeast ((from 10 Nights of the Beast)), Deacon Blackfire ((from The Cult)), Onomatopoeia ((I feel he can be retooled as a Batman foe)), or Hush.

I really am actually liking the sound of Jim Palmiotti's take. I feel given the circumstances Christopher Nolan could really have done all that him and his team could have done with Batman. I think this is on of those times where  one should just stop while they are ahead...not to say that there should never be another Batman movie ever, but perhaps it would be time to get another take on the Batman. While I love the Batman world Nolan has created, it is also very limiting in the terms of his rogues, and everyone wants to see their favorite villain, whether it be as fantastic as clayface or Killer Croc, or more traditional gangster styled Penguin and Black Mask.

Jimmy Palmiotti's idea sounds a little too crazy. The way they were starting to describe Catwoman, was making me agree. I think they should stick to the two villains in each movie that they've been doing and either have Riddler/Penguin or Riddler/Catwoman.

These were the responses they gave me when I asked them. Jimmy's quote isn't a joke in that it wasn't made up. It was how he actually responded. Was he being completely serious? You'll have to ask him that.

Hahaha, of course Loeb would want Hush as the next villain.
I completely agree with Mark Waid's assessment of Catwoman as the next "villain".  I always figured that, after the way the second film ended, the whole Catwoman affair would be perfect with Bruce's new "outside the law" nature.
I also think Bane could be done well if he's the way he's portrayed in "The Batman" when he's not super-juiced on Venom.  Still, I don't know what good stories with Bane there have been besides Knightfall, and that's going to be difficult to do,

it would be pretty cool to see Black Mask or the Ventriloquist because they seem the most grounded in reality. Catwoman would be kind of cool as the love interest. after the first one Nolan couldn't do much worse.

Have multiple villains, but seriously, bring back Scarecrow.  He gets released from prison, or he escapes, and he is a crime boss who is sending all sorts of psychos and assassins at Bruce.  And it really makes sense since he has been in the first two films.

Bane in a Knightfall-like story. First movie, Batman is born (Begins), second movie Batman's morals triumph despite being hunted (Dark Knight). Third, he meets a man on his level, and he breaks him (Knightfall).

Black Mask as the main protagonist for Batman to start off with. Seeing Batman trying to take down a Crimelord while being hunted by the law himself.
But with the law not fairing well with the war on Batman, they hire a consultant; Edward Nigma.
During the film we see Nigma become obsessed with Batman as he slowly hunts Batman and eventually we see him use his love for puzzles to entrap the Bat.
Only an idea :P

Arkham Asylum/Knightfall storyline. looking at the  knightfall page here (http://www.comicvine.com/knightfall/39-40761/ )  it says that Bane let the inmates of Arkham loose in order to tire Batman (trying to get all the inmates back) and after Batman is tired Bane then attacks him. that would make for a good movie

@BenB:
That's what I'm thinking.  There'd be a challenge for Batman.  Riddler may end up using his own thugs, possibly, and having Catwoman in the mix as the cat-burglar who has the hots for Batsy-boy would stir things up.  I know it's "old school" .

I know there are posts wanting other characters, but in my opinion, I hope Nolan and the writers don't rush things by throwing in  other characters not a lot of people know.  Although they are known to those of us here "on the Vine", a lot of movie goers may end up saying "who the H is that?" in terms of other characters.

Wait until the 4th installment IF there will be a 4th installment before introducing other characters.  Although I DO like Gambler's recommendation for Cain and Lady Shiva, maybe they can show up later in the 3rd movie or in the 4th one?

I'm thinking someone like KGBeast, or have to deal with Rupert Thorne being buddies with Penguin, who in turn smuggles weapons for both Two-Face and Black Mask, who the latter wants to kill Bruce Wayne for buying out his company and usurp his position in the process.

I want to see Riddler because I think Nolan is great at writing mystery & because Riddler is my favorite villain who would bring much style & wit to the picture. Of the villains who has yet to appear on film I would like to see Clayface. I love the idea of a horror movie villain gone insane criminal keeping his horror villain identity. Of all the female villains (none have yet to appear in Nolan's series) I'd say Catwoman, because I like the idea of a clever cunning cat burglar who has her own morals too.

Btw, It is amazing how much I strongly disagree with the opinions of the pros (writers, executives, artists, etc.).

The Riddler, not sure how he should look, but he should be the main threat to Batman the Gotham City in the 3rd film, but not the only one.
He is a Narcissist, who has to show that he is smarter then the GCPD and Batman, and his crimes could even include murdering people.  Not sure about the story though but he should be a threat to Batman and the city, he is the focal bad guy of the movie.

"the Penguin" Gotham's new crime lord, taking over the space left by the others.  He isn't mutated or a super criminal, he doesn't use high tech umbrellas or anything, he does wear a tux and top hat all the time and maybe even has pet Penguins.  His role would be as big as the mod's was in Dark Knight.  It would show that everything is changing, even the mobs of Gotham.
Like in the Long Halloween, I think it was, where the "Normal" crime families were against the "freak" criminals taking over.

Selena Kyle, Catwoman, would be a thief who Batman meets while patrolling the city.  At first she is a dangerous flirt, but soon their relationship grows to something more serious like it was in Hush or JLA: the Nail.  She becomes an allie and a possible love interest.  She could also be an example of things escalating, a burglar dressing up like Batman does.  Only, even though she is a criminal she is one of the only people Bruce can turn to.  She is more neutral at first, and an allie, and maybe at the end of the film she goes back to crime and Bruce has to chase after her.
