We know the story in the comics, what makes Magneto and Professor X part ways in the movie?
X-Men: First Class is a movie full of mystery. We all know the story of the X-Men. We know how Professor X and Magneto shared the same ideals and were close friends. Eventually they parted ways and became rivals. What has been causing confusion for X-Men readers is the apparent discrepancies with the few images and facts we know.
This X-Men movie can't have any real ties to the last three Fox movies (four if you count X-Men Origins: Wolverine). The movie takes place in the 60s. Somehow we have characters that would be young in today's time but they'll have a place on the team before the actual first class even appears. There's also Emma Frost appearing in the movie when she was in the Wolverine movie as a young woman.
Let's not dwell on those facts. Let's think about Magneto. I've always felt he was a far more interesting character than Professor X. They both want what's best for mutants (or Homo Superior) but have taken different routes in accomplishing their goals. As I write this, we are waiting for the first official trailer of the movie. What we have seen so far is two images of Michael Fassbender as Magneto. I believe those two images clearly tell us Magneto's fate. == TEASER == The first image we saw showed Magneto in a yellow and blue jacket. This is the same jacket the other X-Men are seen wearing. This tells us that both he and Charles Xavier worked together in forming the team. Then a second image was released with Magneto wearing a helmet. With the second image, I wondered why he would be wearing a helmet. The purpose of the helmet was to block Charles' telepathic abilities. Because it's not in his traditional read coloring, that tells me he just had it made (or made it himself). Besides Charles and Emma, are there other telepaths around? Is Magneto so paranoid that he starts right off blocking the potential telepathic threats? I think this image marks the first point where he and Charles begin to part ways. That explains why he's still wearing the X-Men jacket but is prepared to stand up against his former friend.
As he sets out on his own, he covers the helmet in a coat of shiny red paint (seen in the first image above). We also see that he no longer is wearing the team jacket. Now his out fit is a red top with a fashionable cape (hopefully we'll get an explanation why he felt he needed an actual cape). What I can't quite figure out is what is this room he's standing in? It almost looks like a bank vault with safety deposit boxes but looking carefully, you can see that isn't the case. Wherever he's at, you can bet he's up to no good.
Hopefully, if anything, we'll get a good look at the friendship between Magneto and Professor X. This is what I'm most interested in. I can't say the list of other mutants appearing really gets me excited (except for Emma Frost and Sebastian Shaw naturally). I want to see how their relationship will be depicted and what event will drive a wedge between them. In the comics it was just a difference in ideals. I want to see something a little more...explosive. After we see that first trailer, we just might get an idea. For now we can only ponder over what happened that drove these two apart and pushed Magneto to the other side.
Do you know what would have been cool? A first class movie that actually featured the first class! Or least follow after the X-men Origins movie were the professor rescues Scott, Emma and the other mutants from Striker for continuities sake, but no they have to give us a movie with characters who have no business even being on the team, let alone the movie (yes I'm looking at you especially Azazel). This WTF moment brought to you by frogjitsu.
Asking why Magneto needs a cape is like asking why Psylocke needs to run around in a purple one-piece...thong...thingie. With those strange legbands. Chances are, there is no good reason. And why do they always have to make Mystique look so repugnant? Correct me if I'm wrong, but in the comics not only is she not depicted as looking so very much like something from Innsmouth, but actually being rather attractive.
@brendon277: Doesn't see always in the comics =P And for the whole Emma being young in origins and young in first class this happened in Old Man Logan where Wolverine finds emma frost but she still looks young. She explains that she uses her telepathy to make her image seem like that to others so she could be a lot older in origins and just use her powers to make herself look really young.
ooh, spoiler alert, um, Magneto shouldn't turn evil in this movie, he and prof. x both went to meet Jean Grey when she was a little girl which should be roughly 15 years after First Class.
I don't know how this movie is gonna be, but at least they got the helmet design right this time, and at least this actor playing him looks like Magneto. Not the fat, gay, old man that was playing him with a generic helmet that barely fit on his fat head last time. Love the new image where the helmet is red too. What baffles me is this guy is looking a lot more like Magneto and there are people bashing it. At least there making him look like he does in the comic book this time. I think this guy is gonna do a great job making us believe he's Magneto. Gandolf the Gay in the first three, not so much.
Even though i know this movie might not do as well as i hope it would, i'm just hoping it would so that everyone who is talking crap about it will be proved wrong :P
(sigh) i cant help my nerves because im AM super excited to see the trailer..but i have a feeling our hopes will be up and then shot down a bit. Based on what ive seen in photos, i havnt been to impressed with the visuals, but now ive seen the new Magneto photo released today and ive come back to thinking this MAY be o.k. But a main think that ive seen that has been bothering me is professor xavier with hair...i dont remember seeing him with hair....at all...throughout his history...i may be wrong...but evn if he did have hair...i think they STILL should have shaved him for the fans who havnt read the comics for familiar reasoning.
Can't say I'm impressed yet but I'll wait until the trailer before making my mind up.
However if this really wants to score some points, they should show how Xavier ended up with the wheelchair and since Magneto's apparently turning against him in this movie, they should do it like Ultimate X-Men where Magneto sends a metal rod flying through Xavier's spine after 'a little falling out'.
To be honest, the actress who played as Emma Frost in the last Wolverine movie wasn't Emma Frost at all. Even though she has the ability to turn into diamond-shaped form. Plus, she was Silverfox's sister. I just want to forget it.
Was the Emma Frost fro mthe Wolvie movie ever actually givrn a name on screen? First classes Emma seems to have different powers so maybe she's movie Emma Frost and the other was just a diamond skinned girl. That's how I'm explaining it anyway.
Gotta look at the movies as completely seperate to what we know fro mthe comic books.
not looking forword to this. i guess ill have to see the trailer. I like the people behind the lens, but hate FOX and there ability to ruin movies even with the best talent involved. I hate that emma is in this, so what shes 60 when her and cyclosp hook up? oh right they killed him. f this series, wish this was a full on reboot. I wish even more that marvel had the rights to x-men still.

I got a feeling this it gonna somewhat like WB did with Batman. If it does well then it'll be a reboot, if not then it'll be a prequel. We'll just have to wait and see what happens

Indeed, really don't know why they're bothering. I'm kind of over comic book movies now, and I feel the general public will be sooner than later as well.
the director hinted at time travel in one interview. looks like the film will start where x3 left (charles trapped in that other body). maybe he travels back to warn someone and changes everything (like the last st film).
I can't believe that they have like zero respect for the previous films and comics and their timelines. Is it just me or is every director trying to personalize these movies way too much. No one is really paying tribute to the actual greatness of these original stories.

he cannot turn "evil" in this movie. in the beginning of x3, charles and eric are still friends and looking for students (jean). that flashback takes place in the late 70s.
i still think they will go for an alternate timeline and/or time travel.

seriously that picture of him with the helmet and yellow "xmen" uniform looks like a fucking bobble-head..maybe it's the angle...or the helmet is too big for his head..regardless of WHY...it looks cartoonish and idiotic...again...like a bobble-head.
I'd be more interested in this discussion if someone competent was producing it...look at the last X-Men film and Wolverine flick....idiotic...this movie is gonna blow nuts. the smelly sweaty kind.

Considering Fox have blown over 900 million dollars on all their piece-of-crap comic book adaptations, I'd hope it takes more to get people excited than some glossy red paint.
Yes, they painted a prop accurately. Let's not start rolling around in fields of happiness just yet, people. This is the company that put out the X-Trilogy, Daredevil, two Fantastic Four movies, Elektra and X-Men Origins: Wolverine.
