Off My Mind: Why 'The Avengers' is Already a Success

Disney and Marvel Studios are clearly doing something right when it comes to adapting their characters.

Soon the entire world will have The Avengers unleashed upon them in movie theaters. While everyone may not have seen it, those that have are saying positive things about it. There have been many comic adaptations that came and simply fizzled out. With the record breaking box office receipts so far, this does not look like it will be following that pattern.

The idea of a comic book movie containing six main characters (along with some very strong supporting ones) is almost absurd. Along with the number of characters, you also have the different actors involved. All will be vying for camera time. In the past, movies with multiple heroes or villains ended up becoming convoluted and would lose all sense of direction. A common practice has been to keep each character/franchise separate in its own little corner.

Marvel has gone against the common practice. Instead of the past notion of keeping the characters separate, they've been working to build up its "Cinematic Universe." This way of thinking will give the movie a large advantage over past comic book movies and is a direction other publishers may want to consider.

== TEASER ==

The Avengers may be the first movie in its own franchise but it's not the first movie with the characters. The previous movies, Iron Man, Iron Man 2, Incredible Hulk, Thor and Captain America: The First Avenger, all played a role in setting up The Avengers. These previous movies help give viewers a background on each character and should give the movie more room to tell a story rather than focus on the origin of characters.

When Thor was released, I made the argument that he wasn't as big of a household name as Iron Man or Captain America. Yet audiences went to see the movie because they knew it and the Captain America movie would be leading into The Avengers. All of these movies are pieces of a bigger picture and those that have been enjoying them will want to take in every piece they can get.

DC/Warner Bros. has agreed with this philosophy. Diane Nelson, President of DC Entertainment, commented on the idea of having the separate franchises rather than work towards a Justice League movie. Geoff Johns even commented a couple years ago that he felt the DC characters were "bigger than Marvel's" and they should stand on their own rather than be "smashed together."

This is also a question that I get asked by my neighbors when taking out the trash. This is something that makes sense to the average movie-goer and it makes sense to comic book readers.

"When are we getting our own movie?"

DC Comics has been successful with its animated movies. Although, what you'll see is a majority of the movies focus on Batman or Superman. Wonder Woman and Green Lantern have had great movies but the chances of any sequels to them are pretty slim. The same can be said for an animated Flash movie. A live action Flash movie has been in discussion but despite the success of The Avengers and the Christopher Nolan Batman movies, it could still be considered a gamble. Green Lantern had its faults but if we people knew it could serve as one of many lead ins to a Justice League movie, it could have been received differently. The chances of Wonder Woman or Martian Manhunter getting their own films are virtually nonexistent. But they could easily shine in a Justice League movie.

Movie audiences love when movies are tied together. Knowing they are seeing part of a trilogy or franchise gets them excited. They will be on the lookout for hidden clues and easter eggs knowing that there could be some indication to what might come next. Keeping characters in a self contained universe does have its advantages. Nolan's Dark Knight character wouldn't fit in next to Superman in blue and red spandex. But a Batman with a different take could fit in a Justice League movie.

Viewers want to know they're buying into something bigger with the potential to be epic. There are other Marvel characters such as Spider-Man, Daredevil, the Fantastic Four, the X-Men and even Ghost Rider that only exist in their own little universes since the rights are retained by separate studios. Imagine how great it would be if they could exist in the same universe as the Avengers. Hopefully this is something that Warner Bros will reconsider as well so that we can see all our favorite heroes (from the same publisher) together on the big screen.

The Avengers is a success, being one of the people to see the movie, i'd recommend it to everyone. Very funny, action packed, nice special effects and great performances by everyone. 5/5

I think it be cool to see Spider-Man and Daredevil in the same movie and having the X-Men join up with some of the other characters. It be really awesome to have Wolverine, Spider-Man, Daredevil with the Avengers. I would think it be cool if they do a live action Justice League movie. Although they would have to make Wonder Woman, Flash, Green Lantern, possibly Aquaman and either Martain Manhunter or Cyborg depending on what Justice League origin. Even a Green Arrow Movie so he can join. It sounds like a hassle and now I'm thinking about it, they would have to pull out all the big stuff to make them good.

Damn I saw it 3 times already! And I'm not a Marvel fan! It's that good!!!!

Posted by GothamRed

I'm looking so forward to seeing it, got my ticket for friday. But yeah I would say it's a already a success, I mean everyone who's seen it already have had generally good reactions. The hype for the movie is paying for itself and then some because nobody, NOBODY who saw the first trailer for this film are going to miss it. Not only that but the build up was excellent, not only did they firmly establish all of these characters, but none of the movies in this line were bad, which must not have been an easy feat to pull off for Marvel, i mean they went all out. And on a personal note, THIS was the superhero movie I was looking forward to this summer, yes even more so than DKR. The actors are great, my favorite avenger is finally getting the screen time he deserves, and I honestly like marvel's movie universe more than the nolanverse. It's not bad it's just not my number one is all.

Don't forget The Punisher who have three movies already.

Edited by Stormultt

You know if DC gets their sh*t all the way together with the JL movie it's going to SMASH as hard as avengers WW.

They need to come completely correct though.

And people enjoyed this so much because this is one of the first movies to bring forth big named superheroes all in one plus it was well executed action wise and acting wise. Kids are loving it and adults are. It's opening up a whole new realm of possibilities for future marvel movies. I'm happy for Marvel.

Just watched it and loved it. And I'm super pumped from what they teased in the credits. Now that we have this the I'm going to keep crossing my fingers in hope that someday we'll get them all together for Marvel Super-Heroes Secret Wars.

A secret wars movie would be brilliant.

DC needs to start making their own movies, Marvel style, or any attempt at something like this would suck.

Posted by difficlus

Don't think DC will ever step up to the plate, they should just stick with animations.

Posted by GothamRed

@Stormultt: In order to do that they'd have to at some point make a non-batman related movie that doesn't suck (nowadays not in general and MAYBE Man of Steel can fix that) and they have to get directors on board willing to make a movie that exists in the same universe as another directors movie instead of just trying to make a series of stand-alone film series. I'm not saying this is impossible but based on recent events they have their work cut out for them.

Posted by Oldskool

I already saw it last week here in Holland and it's a really great movie. And after the little clip in the end credits, I can't wait for the sequal! I hope that they will also add some other classic Avengers to the team's roster for the next movie. A Justice League movie would be really awesome, but I don't think DC is quite ready for it yet. They would have to do a character build-up in a couple of other movies first, just like Marvel did with Hulk, Iron Man, Cap and Thor.

Posted by Stormultt

@GothamRed: Agreed entirely, Hopefully they step up.

@RigorMortis: Marvel needs to take notes from DC animation-wise and DC from marvel movie-wise.

Posted by GothamRed

@Stormultt: Honestly I wouldn't say that, I mean at least to me the DC animated movies, while better than marvel's and produced more quickly, are never all that amazing, I mean aren't close to bad but DC has done better in the past. Also I don't get why people have been bashing marvel's animation recently, They haven't produced a "bad" animated series since at least 2008, and A:EMH is my favorite comic book animated series in the last several years.

As an admitted Marvel guy, I really appreciate them creating this universe in films. Having your favorite characters cross paths is always a cool idea, even if its for a brief scene. I think that Marvel has done more than introduce these characters to a new audience, but found a way to strengthen the brand overall. I guess i'm even more excited for what might come. (Inhumans please!)

That's the problem though A:EMH has been Marvel's best animation product in years in terms of story-line, animation and etc. Oh and Spectacular spider man was also one of their best animated shows and I mean DC's animated movies have been tons better than Marvel's with probably the exception of planet hulk. I just feel Marvel's story-lines aren't as sharp as DC's. I mean Young justice and Green lantern the series are well done shows and DC is even expanding into the 3D CGI realm nicely but with Marvel I feel as though they have shown little growth in the animation department while DC has shown more growth. I feel as though the right people at marvel aren't running the animation department and they need a toss up of creative minds. Marvel has a lot of potential to put out beyond amazing shows with Disney backing them up and with the amazing story-lines they have in comics.

Edited by Zeeguy91

@RigorMortis: Hmm. What do you mean by Marvel style?

If its in reference to the fact that Marvel actually employs people from the comics to write the scripts, while DC does not, then you'd be right. For some reason, WB felt it was okay to hand Green Lantern off to someone whose credentials included being the director of Life as We Know It. That, I will never understand. Honestly, Green Lantern wasn't as bad as people were saying it was, but it did suffer from the writer cramming way too much into a limited time period and giving Hal a cliched internal conflict. I'd be up for a reboot, but keep Mark Strong and I'd even say keep Ryan Reynolds, but give the script to a plotter and writer who know the character. Like Geoff Johns maybe or someone else who has actually had a run on the character's title. Same goes for Flash and Wonder Woman. I'd so love to see Azzarello's Wonder Woman brought to the big screen.

And I honestly don't get why Nolan's Batman can't be brought into a Justice League movie. Yeah, he's grounded in realism and people say Nolan's Batman couldn't fit into the larger DCU with all of the fantastical characters like Superman, but...isn't it that way in the comics? To me, the beauty of the DCU has always been that a "low" fantasy character like Batman has been allowed to coexist with "high" fantasy characters like Superman and GL. IMO, you'd just need to tone down some of those "high-fantasy" elements for a movie. One of Green Lantern's weaknesses was that it appeared too cartoonish with all the CGI utilized. I think that could have been fixed if they had changed that by having the Guardians be portrayed by live actors, not done by CGI and had some of the Oan environment actually be real sets, not CGI constructed landscapes. I mean, even in the comics, when a GL appears before the Guardians, they appear in a closed metallic "board-room", not a mountain citadel. It appears that Marvel tends to tone down their fantastical elements from the comics, while DC believes that they should make them more grandiose (at least with GL).

Anyway, I think if Man of Steel is as good as I hope (knock on wood), then DC should really consider combining Nolan's Batman with Nolan and Snyder's Superman. A potential World's Finest movie would be incredible. In conclusion, I'm so pumped to see Avengers, but to be honest I'm more excited for Dark Knight Rises.

I'm a bigfan of Cap, but one of the biggest parts of this movie I believe will be Iron Mans role

Posted by GothamRed

@Stormultt: There's the thing right there were we differ, I'm not a fan of either of DC's new animated series. Admittedly I've never seen Green Lantern so I can't judge that, but Young Justice...irritates me... a lot, like probably more than it should. I just like none of the characters on that show and I HATE the design style for this show (even when it was used on Under the Red hood, JL: Doom, etc.), it's really not good looking. Generally the animation is good and the voice acting is...decent, i guess, but I couldn't stay with it and I'm likely not going back. As for the format shift, staying 2D doesn't bother me just cause I'm more of a fan of 2D animation anyway, but to say marvel has really progressed is kind of... unfair. While they may not shift formats their animation had gone through a variety of shifts over the years to get to the point it's at now, usually through design styles, while DC tends to progress to a point they're happy with, then... stop for a while (I mean their design style hasn't really changed at all since Wonder Woman, and even went backwards for green lantern, not that I'm complaining). DC does try new things, and for the most part they work out, save for their venture into anime style with Batman in Gotham Knight but even that didn't do terribly and they did learn from it at least. Speaking of that, that was a format change for Marvel, they produced a series of anime in the last few years, none of which were bad. Also a side note, Wolverine and the X-Men wasn't a bad show I don't know why that wasn't mentioned. So anyway sorry that was all over the place and kinda ranty, that's just How I feel on the subject of Marvel and DC animation, and you're free to disagree with me all you like. Honestly this is the most productive conversation on this topic that I've had in the last few days so thank you for that.

It's a succes because Wheddon made a movie for everyone. The non-readers, and the fanboys. It's no Dark Knight, but it's at the top of the Marvel movies which is fine.

It rocked! And then, it rocked some more!

Awsome movie!

5/5 Must see!

Posted by McClintick

For DC because wonder women is bad movie wise the most logical is not justice league its a batman/superman movie. But you could not usecthis most recent movie batman. they could find new actors and just do it as we dont need lead up to films. but DC is a scared studio when talking live action so it wont happen.

Posted by dioramademon

I dont think DC could pull off a Justice League movie. The characters are not as recognizable as the marvel ones, and the movies are way below the standard of the marvel movies. I think that The Dark Knight is one of the most over rated films, yes it is brilliant but Christian Bale is a terrible batman. His voice and acting in the films is just bad, the slow turn of Harvey Dent was brilliant but I may get negative views for this but the film only did so well off the back of Heath dying. It had so much more publicity due to him passing, he was the whole film. The Joker overshadowed Batman. In terms of being closest to the comics Tim Burtons Batman and Batman Returns was the best, the sets and style matched the comics and Michael Keaton is the best batman. I dont think that wonder woman would make a good film because the costume would need changing and the fans would go crazy, and the only way it would have been good is to have Joss do it which they turned down. Martian, Flash and grren lantern are just not big enough to warrant a film.

The Avengers is the best comic movie bar none, it destroys The Dark Knight and will be bigger than DKR. Joss created an amazing film which gave decent screen time to all characters, was funny, engaging and had the best action sequences. I have seen it 3 times and am going again. I cant remember the last movie I did that for

Edited by jcbart

What my worries would be is that, after this being the SIXTH (I can't believe it's that many) movie in the MCU series, audiences might be getting tired of the superheroes. Iron Man 3, Thor 2, Captain America 2 and an as of yet unrevealed film are all coming out in the next two years which I had my reservations about as far as oversaturating the audience goes.

HOWEVER, now that everyone I know has seen The Avengers, they love it. They can't wait for more movies, and I'm right there with them. Bringing Joss on board was the best decision Marvel could have done because he made a fresh and really very exciting piece of cinema which has never been done before and, most importantly, screen time is pretty much equally distributed. After watching the film three times in its opening weekend, I still have it locked in my head, and I want to go see it again this weekend. Joss made a comic book as a movie. He made a movie that kids will love for action and superheroes, their parents will love for the wit and laughs, but above all Marvel fans will love it because it isn't a crummy adaptation.

It hasn't bored the audience. It hasn't grown stale. If anything, The Avengers is saying, next?

DC Characters are more recognizable then Marvels ... superman, batman and wonderwoman are perhaps the most well known superheroes of all time ... A justice League movie would be amazing ... just take a chance.

I think one of the main reasons it's so good is because every character gets their bit, and the comedy is handled tastefully while not being over the top (only in a couple of cases), the cinematography in some cases is brilliant in the decision to do certain shots. And the chracters themselves are failry well portrayed in that if a comic fan could imagine these people in real life they'd probably behave in a similar fashion to what is shown.

Edited by howlett76

well for one reason i can think of they used a story like ultimates to basically tell the tale of something that would be difficult otherwise.. most of the hard work was done for them plus well obviously the actors were perfect but they used a director like joss wheedon who by his very nature with shows like buffy angel has a near natural flare for handling multiple large characters while making them all feel a peace of a puzzle without one actor doing most of the heavy lifting

but with the dc movies the nature of what their attempting to put on screen they should just keep to animated movies.. dc doesn't fit so perfectly well in the real world..great in comic or animation though :) (big fan of dc in last few years..)

Posted by Eyz

DC's been having successes on TV, cartoons, etc.. And Marvel's been having most of their own on movies.

On the videogame side though, it really depends. the Arkham series' been doing great (even though I honestly preferred Asylum to City, but that's more of a personal opinion...), the Marvel Alliances too, but besides that...it really is a hit and miss kind of thing.

Posted by Chaos Burn

Marvel should quit whilst they're ahead, I bet they're going to shamelessly chuck out movie after movie now, and it's just a matter of time before they become terrible B movies with desperate actors once again.....

i watched Avengers 1 week before of its worldwide release. its awesome to watch, i wish someday i will watch an Indian superhero movie.

Wanna know how to make a successful Justice League movie? ok, i'll tell you.

1) Make a successful Superman reboot, with the new Man of Steel film coming out, this could be possible, since most people already know a bit about Superman's backstory, focus less on an origins tale, and more on him fighting off an invading force, they are doing Zod in the film, it would be nice to have Zod return for the JL movie (much like Loki did in Thor) and team up with someone like Brainiac to enact revenge on the Earth and Superman.

2) Reboot Batman. I agree that Nolan's Batman wouldn't fit with the rest of the heroes, he's grounded in too much realism and honestly, probably wouldn't WANT to join the JL. As much as it pains me to say this, out of all the Batman films we've seen, the closest one that would work in JL would be Clooney's in Batman & Robin. He had a bit of fantasy to him, had more outlandish, impressive gadgets and had a lighter feel to him, I think that Batman would join the League. Now I hear rumors of a new Batman franchise reboot happening if so, I say meld together Nolan's Batman with Clooney's and the result could work.

3) MAKE WONDER WOMAN FOR GOD'S SAKE!!!! It seriously isn't that hard, if Thor can be made into a believable movie, so can Wonder Woman. I say take the script from the animated WW film and use that as a template for a live action film. And of course, change WW's outfit a bit to be more practical, something like this:

4) Green Lantern sequel/ reboot- I hear talk of a sequel to Green Lantern is being made, this, Like Man Of Steel could easily fit into an up and coming JL movie, it can work as a stand alone, with hints of the JL future threat, for instance, Hal can come in contact with the still forming construct that would/will be Brainiac but doesn't address it fully.

5) A Flash movie- yes, this would be difficult to write, but I think if it becomes half CSI half superhero flick it could work. After all, Barry Allen is a Forensic scientist, how about having a series of murders taking place where the victims have some how been flash frozen (by Captain Cold) and the police, along with Barry are stumped, so Barry works late night to try and solve it only to be struck by a freak lightning bolt and dosed in chemicals becoming the Flash, who later finds and fights the villainous Captain Cold

6) A Martian Manhunter movie- This could be easy to write, have it be set in the 1940s as a criminal noir. Detective John Jones is trying to solve a series of murders going on by a seemingly unstoppable foe, this foe could later be revealed to be an alien spy sent to gather information on the Earth and its inhabitants, at this time, during the end of the movie, John can be revealed to be an alien himself, and state that if this would ever happen again, a team would be needed to stop it, for he alone wouldn't be enough, which would be a hint to the future JL

AND THAT my friends, is how you would make a successful and fun Justice League film and tie in films.

Marvel is good at live action movies. DC good at animated movies. TV shows are practically the same with a few good on both sides of the same quality( Avengers: Earth's mightiest heroes and Young Justice). Video Games if excluding the hit Arkham & MUA  games are better for Marvel( with X-Men Legends, Hulk and Spider-Man games). Comics is no man's land and I would give to TMNT( cause both Kinda suck at the moment).
Overall they're equal and DC will not enter live action arena the same way Marvel does cause, like they said each hero can't play together well...each wants the screen all to themselves.

I really don't think that's true. You're forgetting the fact that from 2001-2006, The Justice League animated series was one of the most popular kids shows on television. That's an entire generation that grew up watching the Justice League, myself included. You're also forgetting that before 2008, when his movie came out, if you asked a person on the street who Iron Man was, they'd say "Who?" Marvel's characters were not popular until they received their own movies, especially Thor and Iron Man. Nobody that I knew knew who Thor was comic-wise. They thought it was just a story about the Norse gods. The only exceptions out of the Avengers are probably the Hulk and Captain America. On the other hand, everyone knows who Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman are. And because of the animated series, they know who Flash and Green Lantern are. Granted, they don't know the Silver Age iterations, but that can easily be rectified by using Barry in a Flash film.

I remember seeing it in theaters, and nobody I knew was there because of Heath Ledger's death. And their opinion certainly weren't shaped by Heath Ledger dying. Their opinion were shaped because it was a damn good movie. It was perfect. I've watched that movie literally like 30 times and I never get tired of it, its that good. All of my friends, even the non-comic fans, hold that movie as the golden standard of what movie should be, not what a comic-book movie should be, but a movie.

I dont think that wonder woman would make a good film because the costume would need changing and the fans would go crazy, and the only way it would have been good is to have Joss do it which they turned down. Martian, Flash and grren lantern are just not big enough to warrant a film.

Um, I don't think Wonder Woman's costume would be that much of an issue for a film. The fans would understand that it would need to be adapted for the purposes of a movie, and really as long as you have the singlet and the bracelets, it would be fine. For a movie, they'd just have to make it more armor-like. Have you been reading Azzarello's current run? Because I think in his hands, he could write a perfect Wonder Woman movie.

Didn't Green Lantern just have a film? Granted it wasn't as good as I wanted, but that's on the writers, not the character. So, they have demonstrated that there is an audience for a Green Lantern movie. If they followed this movie up with a sequel that was actually good, then they could probably pull it off. Or they could just reboot it.

And as much as I'm looking forward to Avengers, Dark Knight Rises is probably going to be much bigger. Its a good thing that they chose to open on separate weekends. Marvel probably knew that they would be slaughtered if it was the same weekend.

Posted by whiteknight67

Marvel can group all these characters together DC cannot won't happen and it shouldn't happen. After the success of Nolan's Batman, the Batman shouldn't be with any other characters. DC = Animation together. just my opinion.
