Off My Mind: Why Superman and Wonder Woman's Kiss Makes Sense (For Now)

Everyone's been talking about it and what they think but after seeing how it played out, has the opinion changed?

The debate on whether or not Superman and Wonder Woman should 'hook up' has been an ongoing one for decades. When it was announced that Clark Kent and Lois Lane would no longer be married once the New 52 started, the topic of Superman and Wonder Woman came up again. Last week's cover reveal of this week's JUSTICE LEAGUE #12 ignited the argument even further.

No Caption Provided

It's easy to judge a book by its cover. That's what many have and will do with this issue featuring the Kryptonian and Amazon locked in a passionate kiss. There shouldn't be an argument over whether or not this should happen because it has and is happening. Geoff Johns even stated that this is the new status quo. For how long, we don't know.

If you've read the issue, you saw the events that lead up to 'the kiss.' This moment wasn't the main focus on the issue. The comic actually concludes the battle between the Justice League and their new deadly enemy, Graves. If we look at how and why this kiss happened, we can see that it does make sense. There will be spoilers below for JUSTICE LEAGUE #12. Be sure you check out this momentous issue for yourself before reading below.

== TEASER ==
Booster Gold shares the reaction of many.
Booster Gold shares the reaction of many.

The first thing we need to keep in mind is this isn't forever. It may be the "status quo" but that doesn't mean it will last for a year or even several months. This is something worth checking out right now. If Lois and Clark's marriage is gone, why not explore Superman and Wonder Woman being together? A main focus of the Superman comics has been the building of the relationship between Superman/Clark and Lois. We don't need to see that play out all over again. I strongly believe that Lois and Clark will end up together. They don't need to do so right away. I don't plan on giving up comics anytime soon and I'm in it for the long haul. I'd much rather see how this plays out rather than see Clark moping around for Lois. And Lois has already shown that she is with someone else.

There are also those that make the argument we've already seen these two try to get together several times. That is true. There has been a few special and anniversary issues where Superman and Wonder Woman kiss. For different reasons it doesn't work out. Why this might be different is the fact that the New 52 Superman and New 52 Wonder Woman aren't completely the same characters they were before. They have gone through some slightly different events and their personalities aren't exactly the same from what we've seen.

No Caption Provided

The main thing is the danger in their lives and trying to relate to a 'normal' person. I've often wondered how the Man of Steel could even lie next to Lois. A muscle flinch during the night could send her flying through the wall. They also both have a long list of enemies. This was the reason Wonder Woman ended things with Steve Trevor in the first place. Even though they were no longer together, his relationship with Wonder Woman and the League put his life in jeopardy.

No Caption Provided

Wonder Woman and Superman both see how 'alone' they are right now in the New 52. There really isn't anyone on their level. Superman is the last of the Kryptonians and Wonder Woman can't really be sure of her place among men or Themyscira. This feeling is what will draw them towards each other. They are both extremely powerful. They are virtually equals. They are both lonely. They have nothing to lose by seeing where this could lead. When Superman is Clark Kent, he is almost putting on an act. Clark Kent is indeed who he is but he always has to hold back and pretend to be a normal human. That won't be the case with Wonder Woman. Diana may have explored romance with Trevor during her early days in 'man's world' but Clark could actually help her balance the life of a superhero with that of a normal civilian one.

But this doesn't mean they're perfect for each other or meant to be together.

No Caption Provided

I see it as an experimentation between the two. Only this time, we'll likely see it played out a little longer than the one shot stories we've had in the past. Also, JUSTICE LEAGUE #12 just had a kiss. They may not take it further than that. If they do, who knows how much they'll actually explore.

Both heroes are extremely busy. I don't see each becoming a supporting character in the other's comic(s). Brian Azzarello and new SUPERMAN writer Scott Lobdell may have a mention or cameo included but I don't see them joining each other's series full time.

There's also the upcoming Man of Steel movie. If we go based on how comics have often changed around the time a movie is released, we probably won't see the two together in comics while Superman has a movie on the big screen.

No Caption Provided

Superman will someday end up with Lois. Wonder Woman definitely doesn't need a man in her life to define her character. Comic books have always contained loads of romance. There has been a large population that has been wanting to see this happen. There are some things that are worth trying. Just as Wonder Woman doesn't need Superman to make her a better character, why should Superman need Lois Lane or vice versa? Fans of Lois and Clark will get their wish someday. For now, Superman and Wonder Woman are taking their relationship to new heights. Especially if they continue to make out while flying through the sky.

Note: There were so many times I found myself automatically typing "Superman and Lois." It's just a matter of time, people.

I Love that Clark and Lois got married in Pre-New 52. But this is a new world, Lois and Clark had their time. I don't mind seeing Superman with Wonder Woman, I wouldn't even mind seeing him with Lana Lang, I wouldn't mind seeing him with anybody. I just don't want the new DCnU to feel predictable. I want to guess what will happen, I don't want to know that Superman and Lois Lane will be back together. Even if they do, I want it to feel natural, not just because the fans want it, thats how the best comics work.

I really hope this is given a nice long time to develop and isn't a flash in the pan. Clark and Lois were married for twenty something years, and have been romantically involved for decades, I don't think a couple of years for the relationship between Superman and Wonder Woman to develop is too much to hope for.

@Kal'smahboi: Then you should buy the entire Villian's Journey Arc. I think it started around issue 9. It is actually very good and I would say that this issue would be my pick of the week this week. And in a week that had the GL and Flash Annuals, as well as Aquaman, that's saying something.

You know what DOESNT make sense? The fact that Booster was watching them at all -- and then when he is watching them it is on a bunch of computer monitors all of which are apparently playing a video, but when we see a long shot of both Superman and Wonder Woman, there is no camera in sight. If there were a camera any further, it wouldn't get the same kind of quality that this one got and wouldn't get anywhere near as close as it got. So where exactly did that video come from? THATS what I'd like to know.

@doordoor123: Dude. The answer is simple....its comics. It can probably be explained by saying that as a time traveller, Booster can pull up any image from history (recorded or not) instantaneously. Or, a more logical option, it could be that he hacked into DC's computer mainframe, which includes access to street level and/or surveillance cameras.

all i can say is finally i mean i would have wanted batman to get in there first since pre 52 they have always had sexual tension between them, hell even in the various animated series and movies it was hinted that batman and wonderwoman liked each other. Still i do like the superman relationship i hope it comes true, much like i hope ms marvel (captain marvel) and spiderman hook up. Its an interesting development imo was tired of clarke/superman always mooning over lois time he expanded his relationships. Every other popular hero has i.e batman, ironman, hulk, spiderman, captain atom hell even nightwing.

Okay did anyone else think that steve trevor was the only level headed person in that room with wonder woman? I mean the stupid woman acts like it would be a great harm to be with this guy who has stuck life and limb out for not only his country but the rest of the people who do not have powers.

I mean he is not telling everything But I have far more respect for steve trevor now for trying to make himself Wonder woman's equal.

I don't care about superman and wonder womans relationship. its just a plot line. but how she was acting all condescending to steve like he can't take care of himself and that she can't be near him cause she does not want to hurt him. Just tell the truth you stupid woman, You never liked steve trevor and you only saw him as a puppy until he got too affectionate for your liking and you tossed him away. Ive heard similar lines like that thrown onto me and those lines are just cover up. She felt responsible for his capture, which is fair but she never actually cared for him in the first place.

If its just a plot device for now then that is fine. If its status quo for the time being then that is alright too. I do not mind that. Except, like you, I just know that some day it will matter not since Clark and Lois WILL BE TOGETHER. Its just a matter of time. Still, the Diana/Clark kiss was quite nice in this, at least in my opinion.

I read the comic and I really liked how the comic lead up the kiss. This issue gave me a better understanding on how Superman feels. An example being how he told Wonder Woman about having the secret identity and I think it shows Superman showing some discomfort about lying to the people he's close to. He says how close he is to anyone is debatable. This issue showed Wonder Woman & Superman becoming closer to each other. Despite the fact that they're from different worlds (literally), they're not that different. They're not gods, & not humans, they're somewhere in between and they feel lonely.

There's one point everyone has missed so far on the thread. Wonder Woman has her lasso around Superman during their kiss. Doesn't this mean it's a True Love? I mean, it's supposed to force people to tell the truth, right? So if they are kissing, it must be a True Love.

Gah the relationship felt so forced. And all the time leading up to it when Graves' spirits were attacking Wonder Woman, Superman overdid when he kept constantly showing concern towards Diana. This issue looks set to ruin the good track record Johns had set with the Villain's Journey.

Im glad to see Johns taking some risks with the characters, we had all those years of Superman and Wonderwoman fighting together and everyone wishing that they would at least try being together. Now we have it, and when it finally dosent work we will have a reason why Clark ended up with Lois again. Before we see the conclusion that we all know is coming, its nice to see something a bit different.

Its funny that the one character I think has benefited the most from the new 52 has been Steve Trevor. DC really did a good job of taking what was a male version of the "damsel in distress" (hey, the guy used to get kidnapped a lot more back in the day) and turn him into an really cool character. I also like the fact that readers can get a government agent that isn't automatically against the Justice League or superheroes in general......like Amanda Waller and her appearance at the end of issue 12. Will be interesting to see him continue to grow in JLA, and whether the Martian Manhunter will call his relationship with Diana into question at all.

As for the kiss, I don't see the big deal. I'm not one of those readers that feels Clark and Lois need to be together. I've been reading comics since before the two were married and to me its just not a big deal they were separated. I was far angrier about Marvel breaking up Peter and MJ (though I'm really a Gwen Stacy fan I was more interested in Peter just catching a break as he's always been my favorite superhero). Part of that reason is the way DC always presented Clark and Lois' marriage. They did the whole strained relationship bit, but even without that the marriage was written very flatly . Since Lois was such a part of Superman mythos even outside their home, there was nothing really special about the marriage and was generally just panels of Superman either confessing a doubt or fear to her or Lois trying to comfort him after some big decision. It was flat.

Superman and Wonder Woman are definitely not a compatible couple at first glance. Superman can be overly protective and in many cases tends to be overly critical. Wonder Woman is still uncomfortable being in a "traditional" relationship (though she doesn't seem to have the same problems or same misunderstanding of it in her own series) and her mentality as a warrior and Amazon would push back against Superman trying to protect her from harm. They are both extremely stubborn and set in their ways, not exactly what you'd want to have in a starting relationship. But they also have a lot of common ground in terms of power level, facing similar danger, having much the same moral values, and they've been friends for a number of years now. So there is a chance this relationship could make sense if they did it right....or at least make sense while it lasts.

My only true complaint about this development is the writers for Superman and Wonder Woman have their own agendas for the characters and when we see Superman bungie jumping with Lucy Lane in the same week he's kissing Wonder Woman....it just doesn't feel like DC is going to push this idea too hard. It feels more like they are simply testing the waters to get reader reactions. But they can always fall back on the Lucy Lane angle if feelings are negative. That's a shame. Should just go all in with this idea and if it doesn't pan out it doesn't pan out. Think playing it safe is more harm and more confusing than just taking a chance (now, to clarify, I don't agree that Clark should date Lucy Lane, too weird).

As for those that love the Wonder Woman/Batman idea....its technically not dead because one relationship could open up the other. But seriously, come on. Can you really see DC ever truly giving Bruce Wayne a wife? They might tease things with Earth-2 stories and all, but no way is a writer going to be the one to break one of the main characterizations that modern readers come to expect of Batman. If they can't pass the mantle off then they will never let him have a true, happy relationship.

This is a criminally boring and obvious idea "We put Wonder Woman and Superman together, look how clever we are" I am firmly against superheroes getting with other superheroes just because they are superheroes, if they want Superman to have anew love interest then make a new god damn character

Ah so you did read the issue? I saw the preview images and every five panels Superman was like "Wonder Woman! Diana!" Oh for crying out loud we get it! Superman's into Wonder Woman now for some reason. Wonder Woman seemed to move on from Steve very quickly. It only took her a few pages to start kissing Superman.

I disagree with the opinion that the moment was forced. It was just a kiss after all and it comes just after a period of heightened emotion for everyone for two people who have worked together for 5 years. How much build up do you need for a kiss? Heck, I kissed a girl in high school simply because she had NEVER been kissed before. Their seeking comfort from people who understand how they feel. They respect each other and are obviously attracted to one another. People have kissed with less history than these two characters had. You don't have to be in love to share a moment like this.
