Off My Mind: Why Superman and Wonder Woman's Kiss Makes Sense (For Now)

Everyone's been talking about it and what they think but after seeing how it played out, has the opinion changed?

The debate on whether or not Superman and Wonder Woman should 'hook up' has been an ongoing one for decades. When it was announced that Clark Kent and Lois Lane would no longer be married once the New 52 started, the topic of Superman and Wonder Woman came up again. Last week's cover reveal of this week's JUSTICE LEAGUE #12 ignited the argument even further.

No Caption Provided

It's easy to judge a book by its cover. That's what many have and will do with this issue featuring the Kryptonian and Amazon locked in a passionate kiss. There shouldn't be an argument over whether or not this should happen because it has and is happening. Geoff Johns even stated that this is the new status quo. For how long, we don't know.

If you've read the issue, you saw the events that lead up to 'the kiss.' This moment wasn't the main focus on the issue. The comic actually concludes the battle between the Justice League and their new deadly enemy, Graves. If we look at how and why this kiss happened, we can see that it does make sense. There will be spoilers below for JUSTICE LEAGUE #12. Be sure you check out this momentous issue for yourself before reading below.

== TEASER ==
Booster Gold shares the reaction of many.
Booster Gold shares the reaction of many.

The first thing we need to keep in mind is this isn't forever. It may be the "status quo" but that doesn't mean it will last for a year or even several months. This is something worth checking out right now. If Lois and Clark's marriage is gone, why not explore Superman and Wonder Woman being together? A main focus of the Superman comics has been the building of the relationship between Superman/Clark and Lois. We don't need to see that play out all over again. I strongly believe that Lois and Clark will end up together. They don't need to do so right away. I don't plan on giving up comics anytime soon and I'm in it for the long haul. I'd much rather see how this plays out rather than see Clark moping around for Lois. And Lois has already shown that she is with someone else.

There are also those that make the argument we've already seen these two try to get together several times. That is true. There has been a few special and anniversary issues where Superman and Wonder Woman kiss. For different reasons it doesn't work out. Why this might be different is the fact that the New 52 Superman and New 52 Wonder Woman aren't completely the same characters they were before. They have gone through some slightly different events and their personalities aren't exactly the same from what we've seen.

No Caption Provided

The main thing is the danger in their lives and trying to relate to a 'normal' person. I've often wondered how the Man of Steel could even lie next to Lois. A muscle flinch during the night could send her flying through the wall. They also both have a long list of enemies. This was the reason Wonder Woman ended things with Steve Trevor in the first place. Even though they were no longer together, his relationship with Wonder Woman and the League put his life in jeopardy.

No Caption Provided

Wonder Woman and Superman both see how 'alone' they are right now in the New 52. There really isn't anyone on their level. Superman is the last of the Kryptonians and Wonder Woman can't really be sure of her place among men or Themyscira. This feeling is what will draw them towards each other. They are both extremely powerful. They are virtually equals. They are both lonely. They have nothing to lose by seeing where this could lead. When Superman is Clark Kent, he is almost putting on an act. Clark Kent is indeed who he is but he always has to hold back and pretend to be a normal human. That won't be the case with Wonder Woman. Diana may have explored romance with Trevor during her early days in 'man's world' but Clark could actually help her balance the life of a superhero with that of a normal civilian one.

But this doesn't mean they're perfect for each other or meant to be together.

No Caption Provided

I see it as an experimentation between the two. Only this time, we'll likely see it played out a little longer than the one shot stories we've had in the past. Also, JUSTICE LEAGUE #12 just had a kiss. They may not take it further than that. If they do, who knows how much they'll actually explore.

Both heroes are extremely busy. I don't see each becoming a supporting character in the other's comic(s). Brian Azzarello and new SUPERMAN writer Scott Lobdell may have a mention or cameo included but I don't see them joining each other's series full time.

There's also the upcoming Man of Steel movie. If we go based on how comics have often changed around the time a movie is released, we probably won't see the two together in comics while Superman has a movie on the big screen.

No Caption Provided

Superman will someday end up with Lois. Wonder Woman definitely doesn't need a man in her life to define her character. Comic books have always contained loads of romance. There has been a large population that has been wanting to see this happen. There are some things that are worth trying. Just as Wonder Woman doesn't need Superman to make her a better character, why should Superman need Lois Lane or vice versa? Fans of Lois and Clark will get their wish someday. For now, Superman and Wonder Woman are taking their relationship to new heights. Especially if they continue to make out while flying through the sky.

Note: There were so many times I found myself automatically typing "Superman and Lois." It's just a matter of time, people.

1. She says in this very issue of Justice League that she knew nothing about the way men and women related to one another in the real world but that she thought they were at war, like she was told by the amazons. When she found out they weren't, she tried to have a normal relationship with Steve Trevor, but when she finds out she can't she pushes him away. Clark PRETENDS to be normal. There is a big difference between Superman pretending to be a normal human and Batman who IS a normal human when he takes of the cowl. No matter what he acts like Clark can NEVER be normal. They say that very thing in the pictures in this article.

2. I meant in relation to some other heroes. Batman is quiet and suspicious first and foremost. Green Lantern is a smart ass. Superman and Wonder Woman seem to wear their emotions on their sleeves more than their team mates and neither struggle with whether or not they should be super heroes or not. There is no question in their mind.

3. When did I say parents? Wonder Woman pushed Trevor away by breaking up with him and Supes TRIED to push Lois and Jimmy away by faking the death of Clark Kent in Action Comics.

1. If Wonder-Woman wanted to be normal, she would get a secret identity and live her life as a normal human being, not hang out with gods all day.

And I have to say that I disagree about your Batman/Superman analysis.

Clark does not have to pretend. He lives his life as a journalist quite naturally because that is what interests him and he feels he is doing some good as a journalist. He could just be Superman but as we have seen in Action Comics, that just makes him miserable because he just is not a god who lives in space. What he is is a good kid, raised in Kansas by two nice parents. He lies from time to time to protect his secret identity, like EVERY superhero, but he does not have to pretend.

Batman on the other hand has to pretend he is this foolish playboy.

2. Guy Gardner is a smart ass. The only time when Hal Jordan was kind of pretentious was before he got the ring but ever since, he became rather serious and intense. Now, he is not like that in JL but that is because Johns needs the drama and apparently he just does not care about being coherent with something he himself wrote.

Also, none of them would voluntarily stop being a superhero. I will not even get into Batman because it is obvious and the same can be said about Hal Jordan, who would not have stopped if his power ring had not been taken away from him or Barry, who in Rebirth, would not stop for one second.

3. That is not why he did it. He faked his death because he felt he was becoming someone else, Superman, and that his "former" true self, Clark Kent, the man he was/is, was taking too much of his time. This was five years ago, when he was completely lost about pretty much everything. He came back on that decision since then.

Good, i hope this lasts for a while because honestly, Superman and Lois was kind of boring and Superman and Wonder Woman have much more in common than any single issue could cover so any past issue covering the topic are almost just fan fiction. I am really curious to see where this goes, hopefully pretty far, not married or anything but pretty far none the less.

Also the real issue is that Booster Gold is the biggest creep on the planet.

We'll just have to agree to disagree then. As far as having nothing in common, it seems they have the MOST in common out of all the people in the league:

1. They both want to be normal but can't be

When has Diana ever wanted to be merely human?

@MonkeyToe said:

@Deranged Midget said:

I respect your opinion but that's utter nonsense. They have had nothing in common and no, I referred to her being in such an emotional state that almost any of the leaguers could've comforted her at that point. It's fine that Clark did so, but forcing the unnecessary kiss was a ridiculous publicity stunt. The ENTIRE focus of this and selling point for those who even lack interest in series, was this kiss but the moment didn't even last two pages. The cover is absolute proof if you don't believe me. There was more focus on the pointless dispersing of the League than the moment between Clark and Diana.

It would've made far more sense for this issue to start to build upon an ever-growing friend-ship between Clark and Diana, but having them lock lips instantly makes absolutely no sense.

2. They are both inherently good and compassionate people

I can agree on that, but Clark vastly outweighs here there.

3. They have pushed away the people they care about most to protect them from the danger of just being associated with them.

Eh, it depends on which version of Wonder Woman you're referring. The garbage that Johns wrote, or the brilliance of Azzarello.

...and Frank Miller will be glad. In my opinion, DC has the weirdest tastes. The last two times these two were together in DC publications were DK2 and All Star Batman & Robin, not the best comics out there.

I certainly do not hate it. It could make for some interesting situations but it just seems out of character, kind of lazy and fan-servicy. Now that I think about it, so far, Johns' entire run on Justice League has been like that. It is a shame because I usually like his writing.

I was joking about Batman of course. I am pretty sure Joe Kelly and Greg Rucka are the only writers who want to see those two together.

Well then I guess real life is stupid. :| I've yet to kiss a girl at all, and I'm 16; I don't think a peck on the lips is nothing, if you kiss someone, that's like saying "I want to be with you" or "I find you attractive, let's try to have a relationship". Anyone who kisses people on the lips regularly or has casual sex and thinks it doesn't mean anything are fools and creeps and can't be trusted, because what means something to many people apparently means nothing to them, so they have no real way to prove they love or care about someone, it's all just a game.

I doubt Superman would do that to Wonder Woman.

IRL not all kisses have meaning. You can kiss anything and it can just be pushing your lips against something else and it means nothing. Just an FYI

I feel like Superman and Wonder Woman have what many would call sexual tension. It kinda reminds me of Batman and Catwoman in The Dark Knight Rises, they really are not good for each other but it feels so good. Superman and Wonder Woman are both super humans on Earth, in many ways male and female of the same character. As a result something drives them together but in the end it could rip them apart.

I have no real interest in seeing Superman and Wonder Woman together. I don't think they have good chemistry.

However, G-Man makes a great point. What is the point of the reboot if we can't explore these kinds of things? I'm fine with a writer going down this path because I think any writer who truly understands the characters will recognize that the two do not need to be together, and I look forward to seeing Wonder Woman and Supes discover that for themselves.

I can't see SM/WW being a entertaining relationship, it just fells like a star high school QB dating a head cheerleader/class president. They will fell like the Father & Mother of the Justice League (hell even the DC Universe) and it make the big 3 heroes more awkward for me (Batman fells like a third wheel now).

I do want to see how this plays out, whatever the end. I can understand what would drive Kal-El and Diana together because the lead-up makes sense. No one can tell if this will work out long term, as Wonder Woman is so independent and Clark and Lois seem bonded together by destiny, but I think that this could develop each character as a real person, figuring out what they want in life, and not just the costumed symbols everyone sees them as. Clark is always with Lois. What could being with Diana for a bit change in him? And Wonder Woman? Well. Learning to see things from a "man's perspective" could be easier if a man on her level is guiding her.

. . . *crickets* . . .

And, besides. Anyone remember that fling between Lois and Bruce in the animated shows? With Diana and Clark together, this opens new doors on everybody else's paths now. ;D

I think, and this is especially true in fiction, that the moment leading up to two characters defining moment as becoming a couple defines their relationship.

It felt like they just threw these two together.

And not only that, the dialogue suggests that the kiss wasn't exactly out of mutual attraction, though that most likely played a role, but because they were both lonely and were lamenting over the fact that they couldn't really protect their loved ones.

That's seriously troubling. I don't mind that they're putting Superman and Wonder Woman together. But at least they could have done it in a way where it felt genuine, planted obvious seeds throughout the first eleven issues.

While I agree that the kiss makes sense, its reasons make me feel a bit dubious about a true relationship between Superman and Wonder Woman.

They basically both felt lonely and sought companionship in each other, but truly those two characters are so different, wonder if they can make a functional couple. I'd see them more as friends with the occasional benefit than anything else.

Besides, the way Diana just decided to distance herself from Steve Trevor, by telling him she would ask for another to serve as liaison with the Justice League in his place confirms that she still care a lot a bout him since she's willing to let another person take the risks that come with the position in his place. This seems to indicate that she care more for his well being than for that of another person. On the other hand, as Steve points out himself, he is often in danger regardless of his association with the League, so it's not like not working with them will protect him. Knowing this, it feels more like Wondy doesn't want to feel guilty should he be killed by one of the justice League's enemies.

It certainly does make the right basis and ground for this relationship to happen. Plus the amount of time they've been isolated from society due to the way they are.

Well, here's the thing. The way I understood secret identities was simply to allow heroes to separate their lives, this they can lead a normal life, have normal relationships and keep things distanced between the two. Thus no one can ever use their loved ones against them, well... okay in theory any way. If Superman and Wonder Woman are together, I see little point in a secret identity unless superman is really in dire need of his day job. I'm probably reading too much into this but to me it actually dehumanizes them, saying the only people perfect for them are people like them. I can see how this could happen, just not in support of it is all.

@blackkitty: I always thought secret identities, especially for superman were a means to take a break. It's like how cops and firemen have time to go home to families. Imagine being a superhero all the time, it would definitely be dehumanizing. They wouldn't be able to go anywhere without someone pointing out someone needs help somewhere. Superman probably has job to have responsibilities outside of saving lives. He has super hearing and can hear crimes occurring all the time. If he stayed Superman if he ignored the crimes that would make him look bad. As Clark if stuff like burglars occur, he can be excused in a way since he's working as a journalist or whatever. Superman with Wonder Woman would seem ideal. They wouldn't have to worry about some villain seriously hurting the person they love. They understand the others responsibility to save lives or take on mythical threats. I don't see it lasting as Wonder Woman might get into a tight spot she wants to handle on her own. Superman may see her struggling and zoom right in to settle the matter. I mean Wonder Woman is an amazon and I can't see her being all that affectionate like Superman seems to desire from a mate. It's all good for now, but it will dissolve by the year's end most likely or earlier.

@DarthHavok: I think they ended up together in Kingdom Come as well since Loise was dead in this universe. DC and Marvel are known for repeating themes every 5 to 10 years. They are focused on drawing new readers that don't know the history. That's why stuff like Flashpoint and the Infinite Crisis occur so history can be rewritten and they can retell everything for a new generation of readers. Marvel just seems to launch a new series or create a whole other universe (Ultimateverse) while keeping mainstream history intake...except for Spiderman (to my knowledge) I know its probably not intentionally but both these companies seem to be like bump the loyal followers that have memorized the back-stories of their favorite characters. We think this is something fresh and new so lets go with this and see how a new audience will like this.

Just as Wonder Woman doesn't need a man to define her, neither does Superman need Lois to define him.

RE: "fans of Lois and Clark will get their wish someday" ... Um, they actually GOT their wish for the past 20 something years! That's nothing to sneeze at (just for the record)

While I agree that this probably won't "last forever" (does anything?) I'm totally in support of the idea, lots of potential! Superman/Wonder Woman romance rocks!

I'm a fan of the pairing, I've been enjoying Wonder Woman immensely so far in the New 52 and this makes Superman more approachable as a character and gives him a human quality that makes him far more interesting to read.

I certainly respect the opinions that this was forced, I don't feel as strongly on that as others but perhaps this could have been seeded more thoroughly throughout the JL run.

Bottom line is the pairing makes sense, people can moan scream and post in caps all they like (referring to the DC comics website comment sections) but the New 52 is about New stories new possibilities and most of all attracting new readers, I assume down the line Lois and Clark will be together but for now I applaud the DC staff for trying new story ideas.

GManfromheck! You are what is wrong with comics. If Clark hooks up with Lois and they become Clois, then that won't be anything newer than what they have done before. That makes DC predictable and not worth reading. Now if Kal El and Diana have a baby outside of wedlock then DC will rock the world and shake the establishment or something and go down in history! I was excited for DC's New 52 because I saw it as redemption for the New Krypton debacle. Then I realized that Superman was just about the only one to change. This Superman, Wonder Woman thing can potentially breathe life into DC if done correctly. Maybe DC might actually catch up to Marvel Comics and stop eating their dust. My advice to you GMan is to get a frakking clue and stop posting soppy Clois posts. Superman and Lois Lane's relationship is old 52 and should have no place in the New 52. At least not for the next 10 or twenty years.

I can't be the only one who is reminded of that conversation in Mallrats about Wonder Woman being the only one who could survive Superman shooting his load...?

I say the hell with tradition, let Lois hook up with Steve and live happily ever after. Even if this don't last, let them explore "new" relationships.

Okay. People need to get a grip. Its a comic book. Its fiction.. Its not real... Don't overanalyze everything. Just enjoy it. There is not no such thing as Lois and Clark being destined for one another. A hundred years from now, they might have changed the story completely. Hell 80 years ago, superman was a mean person who beat the crap out of people. Stories evolve. they change. Otherwise they die. Superman's sales were declining due to a lack of interest in his character. So it makes sense to make some changes. Destiny you say. Please.....
