Off My Mind: Why Peter Parker’s Return Won’t Be Easy for Spider-Man

Fighting Doc Ock is one thing. Once the dust settles, there’s still plenty to straighten out.

Otto Octavius defeated Spider-Man. We’ve been witnessing Dock Ock inhabit Spider-Man’s body as the SUPERIOR Spider-Man. He’s done things in a different way and proclaimed to be able to be Spider-Man more efficiently than Peter Parker could. Of course things started blowing up in his face during Goblin Nation.

No Caption Provided

From the first moment Peter was defeated and Otto took over, most of us knew this wouldn’t last forever. Peter Parker would somehow someday come back. Marvel announced Peter’s return along with the relaunch of AMAZING SPIDER-MAN in April. As SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN winds down its last few issues, detailing how Peter’s return could happen, there are other things to think about. Peter may have been in the fight for his life, literally, but even by winning against Otto, the fight is not over.

Otto may have done a lot of things in a very efficient manner but he’s forsook a lot in Peter’s life. Peter can’t simply announce to his friends, family, and colleagues his body had been taken over by the memories of Doc Ock. Things like this might happen in the Marvel Universe but it’s not something just anyone can use as an excuse. Peter has a lot of messes to clean up.

Mary Jane

No Caption Provided

SpOck was downright rude to MJ after he abandoned trying to get intimate with Peter’s former love. He may have saved her against the Vulture’s minions when they attacked her nightclub but as time went on, Otto grew less cordial with her.

With Mary Jane knowing Peter was Spider-Man, Otto used this to bark orders at MJ when he couldn’t be bothered coming up an excuse for Peter’s sudden disappearance. It appeared as if MJ might have been ready to possibly rekindle her relationship with Peter but after SpOck failed to save her burning nightclub, MJ has fallen into the arms of a New York firefighter.

Carlie Cooper

No Caption Provided

Peter’s more recent ex could be of help when Peter tries to put out the fires in his social life since she was able to figure out what Otto did. The problem is, this knowledge and her relationship with Peter cost her a little. Getting kidnapped and turned into a Goblin isn’t something that can be easily overlooked and forgiven. Secrets often have a price and this wasn’t even her secret. Being close to Peter can have serious consequences.

Aunt May

No Caption Provided

Otto may have wanted to marry May Parker once upon a time but he’s clearly moved on. Aside from his usual brisk and rude nature, when Aunt May didn’t react to his new girlfriend, Anna Maria Marconi, Otto got pretty raw on her. Peter’s never barked at his beloved aunt before. With Peter also defending Spider-Man, even after she witnessed what he did in SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN ANNUAL #1 after she was kidnapped, she’s really going to question Peter’s judgement.

Anna Maria

No Caption Provided

Otto decided Peter Parker needed a doctorate. While going back to school, he met and fell in love with Anna Maria. They even moved in together. We can all assume they’ve become really close. Will Peter recall this relationship? What will he tell her once he’s back in the driver’s seat in his body? Although, with Anna Maria being kidnapped by the Goblins, who knows what her future will be?

J. Jonah Jameson

No Caption Provided

JJJ always had a hatred for Spider-Man but it wasn’t as deep as he would let on. After coming around to SUPERIOR Spider-Man’s ways, Jonah quickly was reminded of how much of a menace Spider-Man could be. SpOck ended up blackmailing Mayor Jameson to get what he wanted. This pushed Jonah to play his old games and commission a new batch of Spider-Slayers. While this will have repercussions for Jonah, he will, of course, place all the blame on the wall-crawler.

Parker Industries

No Caption Provided

Peter has a business now. A lot of money was borrowed and sunk into it all. With the recent attack by the Goblins, there’s the question of how much of Parker Industries will be salvageable? Hopefully Otto was superior in his thinking and took out a really good insurance policy. Peter will have the responsibilities of running his business. Even if he doesn’t want to or doesn’t have anything left to run, there’s still the money that will have to be repaid.

The Avengers

No Caption Provided

How will they ever trust him again? As superheroes, they may be more willing to accept the body-switching or mind control excuse. The problem is, all of their sensors told them it was the Spider-Man they welcomed onto their team. How can they trust him in the future? It’s not like they could set up a password or reference some old shared memory because Ock had them all. But then again, Peter might be too busy trying to fix his life to spend time with the Avengers.

And of course he's also ticked off others like Black Cat and Spider-Man 2099.

Peter’s return will be more than just a return of the classic Spider-Man we knew before. He has a lot to deal with. It’d be easy to just tell everyone, “Doc Ock took over my body by inserting his memories into my brain! It wasn’t me!” Of course everyone would think that was absurd. And look at how things turned out for Bucky, who was brainwashed into being the Winter Soldier. That, at least, is a little more believable. The whole, “It wasn’t me” defense wouldn’t go too far.

Peter Parker has always suffered from the “Parker Luck.” He probably hasn’t seen anything yet. There may be a brief moment for Peter to celebrate coming back but there won't be many around that will want to celebrate with him. He's going to have a lot to clean up before others will trust him again.

he will have a lot to clean up, but i think he will have no problem with the avengers and other super heroes.aunt may is always understanding so peter can just sweet talk her. they just got in one argument, no problem.

as for mary jane, i think she will believe what happened to peter. she may not be as understanding as others because his hero life is rough on her, but in the beggining of superior it seemed as if she was over her fears and ready to get back together.

JJJ was against spider man before spock so nothing peter isnt used to there. and im sure jjj cant use the robots after this issue on him. he is no threat.

one thing you are forgetting is that spock ruined his relationship with max modell and the rest of his co workers at horizon labs. that will be rough on peter. i bet parker industries is over with after this. maybe horizon labs will be rebuilt.

i hope she live through this, but if anna maria isnt killed, i have no idea how he can fix that problem.

You know, if Otto ends up spilling the beans that he was the Superior Spider-Man, none of this will matter at all. I have a feeling he will want to take credit where his credit is due... which would relieve Pete of most of his problems. I mean, he is really egotistically vain about being better than Parker, and if there's even a slight chance that Pete will move back in and consequently be showered with any amount of praise for what he deems was his work, he will speak out.

Man, 'Parker Luck' is the worst.

MJ will get over it

Charlie will be cured, maintain some power and become a superhero.

Anna is going to die (Parker luck)

He's going to sell what's left of Parker Industries to Max Modell

The Avengers will understand

Spider-Man 2099 will understand, too (How many Spider-Men do we need running around in the MU??? Why can't Ben Reilly come back? Doc Ock can take over Parker's body for 16 months, but they can't find a way to write Ben back? Sheesh)

It's been a while since you've written one of these and this is a really good article G-Man. Of course, the main problem here is that Slott and those involved with this story have basically done this to set Peter back to ground zero. AKA the classic Stan Lee days in a very literal way. Assuming Octavious doesn't admit to mind controlling Spider-Man or no proof arises that Spider-Man was mind controlled, Peter will be seen as a 'menace' to the world once again. J Jonah Jameson hates Spider-Man with an even deeper passion. Parker Industries will most likely be sold off by Peter so he'll be left peniless without a job at Horizon. And his personal life is ruined by SpOck.

So, in essence, this literally sets Peter back to the conditions when he was first created. Is that truly a good goal to reach for? I think not in all honesty.

I think that MJ will be the most forgiving out of everyone...I still have this theory thst the reason why she came off so stupid wasn't because she was stupid but because she could still sense Peter's memories inside...it wasn't until Ock purged Peter completely that she started to suspect that something was wrong but once Peter resurfaced she went back to believing that everything was ok

His relationship with MJ will be salvaged, as will his relationship with Felicia. Carlie is going to somehow retain powers, I dont know why but I have a gut feeling on this.

I dont know about Anna Marie. I feel like her dying would honestly be too easy. Future genius-level like Doc Ock perhaps?

The Avengers will probably see him as a liability and keep him at arm's length, not really a member in any shape.

Parker Industries will probably be sold off so he has some sort of money to sustain him while he tries to find a job again. He's really going to be back to square one here. Shame since he just got his dream job, and we didn't get to see him with it very long.

@danhimself: it wasnt emphasized enough but everyone thinks that silver sables death is enough for peter to be acting strange. peter has acted violently in the past so maybe everyone thinks that he has just had enough. and mary jane is partially not thinking clearly. she was excited to get back together with peter and then he all of a sudden left her and ignored her for the rest of the series. she must be upset and only thinking of that.

If there's one thing I've learned, it's that things are never "fixed" in comics anymore. Even when all this is resolved, it'll be something else. Somebody will die, somebody will break up, whatever. The Marvel Universe has no status quo anymore, and the same goes for all comics.

@grimoire: He punched her in the mouth. Literally knocked a tooth out. Honestly, the panel with her standing there toothless and the expression on her face was priceless.

The secondary brilliance of this series is the fallout with Peter's return. It's basically created a soft reboot of the series that will hopefully allow the continuation of good and fresh stories, not all back to the same old been there done that stories.

Brace yourselves, a torrent of Peter devolving into an emotional man boy is upon us. All hope is lost, abandon ship and save yourselves.

Honestly, i have no problem of peter returning and i dont mind him sorting out his personal life but what i HATE about Spiderman as a character is that they tend to usually focus on Peter and what emotional garbage he is going through all the time. Its annoying.

Parker Luck has now become the bane of Spider-man comics. It's pretty much Marvel saying okay back to arrested development we go with Peter, He can never grow or have kids or marry again because he has to stay as a man child so we never have to bring up the fact of super hero mortality ( Even though they do it in every other book).

If Marvel is going to do another brand new day having Peter be depressed for 100 issues people will not stand for it and the book will go back to its old numbers under Slott which where pretty average from a big name hero. I really think that Slott needs to have Peter's life and relationships fixed within a year or people will stop reading. At this point it's time to throw fan's a bone and get Peter and MJ back together, help reestablish her character fighting along side Peter to fix his life like a true soul mate does.

I know Slott is a seeder and MJ has said she loved Peter at the tail end of Spider-Island so it's not a matter of if they get back together but when and that time has to be coming up because with no growth and the constant devolution of Peter Parker it's getting harder and harder to care about the once king of the Super Heroes.

Personally, I don't think he really has a lot of hurdles to get over. MJ needs to get off her high horse a bit. So she dated him, does she think because of that she deserves extra attention and care when he's stretched thin? Do you see other significant others or former ones of superheroes getting mad because they weren't saved over a city in danger? Aunt May really had it coming to be honest. Peter/Otto is an adult and she needs to treat him like one. She was out of line with Anna Maria. The Avengers? Well it's not like Wolverine hasn't been possessed before and also didn't go around brutally killing people on a few occasions, yet he's still an Avenger. Carlie Cooper will probably suffer a bit until they find a cure, though in the long term that will have some ramifications. J. Jonah is just being a jerk still and again, it will come back on himself. The guy is responsible for villains like The Scorpion being created, so it's not something new. Parker Industries will probably be fine if it's salvageable. So Pete will just go on to work for himself with a degree instead of someone else. The only one I really worry about is Anna Maria. I like her character a lot, so it'll be sad to see what happens to her. If she lives, it'll be difficult to explain anything and she will have lost her love.

This storyline was predictable from the moment one finishes reading Amazing 700. Octavius thinks he can do a better job being Spider-man and messes up and now Peter has to fix it. The only thing different is we now know the details. The questions moving forward is how long and in what order do these things get fixed? What direction will they take Spider-man now? The reset button seems to have been pressed a number of times with him in the past few years. It would be nice if the character would move forward instead of back and sideways.

@br_havoc: That's true of any comic where the character has a successful solo title. Corporations want a consistent product to sell. A few changes for storyline but nothing major for the long term. Bruce Wayne will always be Batman, Steve Rogers will always be Captain America, Tony Stark will always be Iron Man. When they no longer have a solo title is when a major change will occur. Bruce Wayne may get married, someone else will carry on the mantle of Captain America (permanently), Tony Stark may be permanently crippled.

These stories can essentially be viewed as in continuity what if's? What if someone took "with great power comes great responsibility" to an extreme? What if Bruce Wayne was incapacitated and someone else was Batman? What if someone else was Captain America? What if Tony Stark was crippled? All stories that occurred and none of them were permanent.

With Parker back, we will see how he deals with the knowledge of his actions. Will he ask forgiveness from the Avengers for his actions? Would he get angry that they accepted Spider-Man killing a person as an acceptable action? How much will he deal with Parker Industries knowing his aunt and her husband invested their money into it? Eventually Parker will go back to being on pre-SpOck terms with fellow capes and Aunt May and JJJ Sr. will get by if they lose their investment but until then we'll have some new stories.

@captain_oblivious: I think you missed the point I was trying to make, Sticking Peter in this constant orobus cycle is not giving this character the long term success they wanted. For Peter Parker to be relevant to his audience he has to grow along side with them. Peter Parker grew and evolved a lot since his creation at it help give the character longevity. Now what Marvel has done since OMD is keep Peter trapped in this 60's cycle now the question is would Peter Parker be as big as he is now if he never grow and change with the times and readership like he originally did? Because that is what Marvel is banking on now and I do not think it will work. It hinders that character and causes people to leave because the stories are predictable and have no emotional weight when you know it will end back up at square one with broke Peter with no one because of "Parker Luck".

Peter is the victim of this more so then any other character in comics.

I think that the best thing for Slott to do is not create any love interest for Peter. As well as write MJ x Pedro out of the story for a time and use Betty Brant, Liz Allan, and Jennifer Walter's human form in the series.

@rainja: you sir are so right. I honestly can't stand parker because of the inability of writers to evolve the character and the fans actually keep on demanding that he stay like that. seriously the only spiderman title i have read for a while now is the Ultimate Spiderman because the character died but they created an even more interesting and relatable charatcer. this is overall a sad phenomena in comics as a whole. I sincerely hope that despite the loss of Superior Spiderman nothing will go back to the status quo. Dan slott manage to redefine spiderman and he didn't need to deal with satan for that.

This whole thing about ''living someonelse's life '' stuff was moronic to begin with and I don't know how you can salvage it other than using some-kind of magic to explain it to people. We know that writers won't make the supporting cast to be intelligent so they can figure things out and those that do are done terrible things like Carlie.

I am kinda getting sick of the ''convinient ways '' to screw Peter's life that is absolutely ridiculous to think with a straight mind. I mean deal with Mephisto ? His body swapped with a dying villian who screw his life ? ( Don't get me started on his ''superior life'' )

All I am saying is , I know I will be annoyed to hell with the reactions from the supporting cast that will be written as dumb people who don't really know Peter. All those time they learned who he is and how he does things yet they believe Peter can go this far off ? Come on. MJ and others are not stupid and they've been through worse... How can one not see it ? ...

I just can't...
