Off My Mind: Why Ms. Marvel Should be the Next Captain Marvel

It's time Carol Danvers got her own series once again.

No Caption Provided

Captain Marvel is a name that several characters have used (even ones from different publishers). One of the most famous Captains was Mar-Vell. In 1982, we saw the epic and touching story, THE DEATH OF CAPTAIN MARVEL. The story is held in high regards by many. Despite the popularity of the character, many fans demand that Mar-Vell remain dead.

There have been other Captain Marvels. We even saw the apparent return of Mar-Vell in 2007, which turned out to be a sleeper Skrull agent during the SECRET INVASION.

Marvel has just released a teaser proclaiming the return of Captain Marvel in July 2012. Speculation has already been running wild with who this Captain will be.

The chances are Mar-Vell won't be returning from the dead. We know that pretty much no one is truly dead when it comes to comic book deaths but because of the impact of the story and the 2007 (fake) return, Marvel probably wouldn't go there again. There are Mar-Vell's kids, Genis-Vell and Phyla-Vell along with Hulkling or Noh-Var as possible candidates.

The one person that deserves to take the role is Carol Danvers, also known as Ms. Marvel.

== TEASER ==

This is a rumor that surfaced after the teaser was released. It's a rumor that I hope turns out to be true.

Ms. Marvel has long since shown her place as one of the mightiest Avengers. Her origins are closely tied to Mar-Vell's as well. When Carol first appeared, she had overcome the boundary of equality by doing many jobs considered to be a man's job. Not only had she been a fighter pilot and CIA Agent, she also led her her own SHIELD strikeforce team (Operation: Lightning Storm) as well the Mighty Avengers.

When she was working with Mar-Vell (before the world knew who he was), she was exposed to radiation from a Kree device. Mar-Vell tried to shield her with his body and the result was her gaining powers similar to his. Her original costume even sported the same symbol as Mar-Vell's.

Besides her long career as a hero, she recently accomplished another amazing feat. Her 2006 series lasted 50 issues. For a series driven by a female character, that's incredibly impressive these days. It was extremely unfortunate when her series ended and many readers were left wondering why Marvel canceled it.

It's time for Carol to step back into the spotlight. For all her strengths, it's a waste to have her sit in the back of comic panels with nothing really to do. Even when Tony Stark gave her leadership of the Avengers in MIGHTY AVENGERS, she didn't get to do a whole lot. As part of the New Avengers, she's barely featured in the stories and you can easily forget she's even part of the team. Let's see  her get a promotion from "Ms." to "Captain." Changing the name might even make her more appealing to those few that struggle with purchasing comics solely based on a female lead.

No Caption Provided

With AVENGERS VS. X-MEN coming up along with the return of the Phoenix Force, it appears that Carol will somehow be using the powers she had when she went by Binary and was part of the Starjammers. Perhaps she will be undergoing some power increase which would make her even more worthy to graduate up to Captain. She's proven she can carry her own title before and let's see her evolve into an even more powerful character.

Now while I am a reader of Uncanny when they aren't turning the world on its collective ear - I have never read the Alias books though I knew they were of some literary esteem back when introduced in the early part of the last decade. I would actually like to see this and further gauge her as a character if you can cite the issues. There sounds to be some substantive background illustration which might further my judgement.

I apologize if I come off as flippant, which my wife thankfully reminds me will not help my passion for this wonderful hobby - again I am limited by my medium behind the keyboard. Probably much like yourself though, it disturbs me (not in your case) when I get all sorts of unqualified, non-empirical statements about things within the medium. And while I understand its an aesthetic medium whereupon we are the keepers of our own romanticized impressions to whatever globs of paint are on the canvas - try asking a Star Wars fan how they feel about Han shooting first. We become invested within these characters as a reflection of ourselves or those around us; a fun house mirror of what we aspire to or have come from.

Ms Marvel's character was peppered throughout the Alias series, if anything, I would cite issues #24 through to the end (about five more) where you could see the best friend relationship between her and Jessica Jones and a different side of Carol. If there were any series to highlight who Ms Marvel was, I would say her last series - but I wouldn't expect you to go through all 50 issues, lol.

Nope, not flippant, and I completely concur with your take in our shared enjoyment of comics. A fun house mirror of what we aspire to or have come from. I like that. A lot. :)

@VenomMelendez: Actually my logic is pretty spot on. Although she isnt the only one to use the names, who do you think of when you think of MS MARVEL or WARBIRD? CAROL. Anytime you here of a great storyline featuring the great Ms Marvel, who do you think of? Sharon Ventura!? Karla Sofen!? NO. You think of Carol. She may not be the only one to use the name, but it belongs to HER. Anyone else would just be A Ms Marvel but she is THE Ms Marvel.

JEAN GREY and JAMES HOWLETT are certainly not the first or only ones to be known as PHOENIX and WOLVERINE but who do most (if not all) people think of when they hear those names? I stand by what I said. Carol is Ms Marvel and if she should ever die, that is the name that will be carved into her tombstone.

Well -- I am more on the X-Men side of things when it comes to Marvel, and with her heavy involvement due to Rogue and the actions around Civil War during the House of M fiasco, Ms. Marvel was kept forward. Plus, I was a real fan of Alias - which had her in it substantially and got me interested in her as a character, making me get my hands on both her previous solo series.

Alcoholism - daddy issues, kidnapping, rape, child birth, lost of self (due to Rogue) her fight to get herself back, her relationship with Wolverine and the military, plus her position in relation to the Marvel Universe -- all these things stood out to me. She has been powered, super-powered, de-powered, then powered over the years and yes, while catering to the blonde/buxom quotient, she was mostly always presented as a strong hero.

And thank you for this by the way - love talking to knowledgeable Marvel fans and you clearly are. :)

@lykopis: Marvel and DC run titles at a loss. Call their front offices, if they won't give you an answer, call Diamond. Diamond will surely give you the skinny on what books both companies (owned by large conglomerates in communications/entertainment) take monthly losses on in order to save public face to remain friendly across their demographic readership. Point blank - the comics industry needs more female readers and involement, thus you get titles like Ms. Marvel. So, no offense - but it's easy for me to scoff at it because I have been the victim of books run at a loss myself.

However, to believe that publishing companies do not have quota characters to apply to broad base of demographics in order to increase readership is something which, ma'am - I'm not going to argue. And not to get ticky-tacky on the political scale of mis-quoting - I didn't use the phrase ' I don't know who she is ' to be literal. If you read directly after that, I include my qualifier. I don't care who she is because she has no 'is' - if you follow my creative meaning. You insinuate that she has been involved in every major Marvel story arc however I would inquire as to what we are qualifying as a 'major' story arc particularly given that the character wasn't used for nearly 30 years. I'm not gonna quibble about that, however - Secret Wars, Infinity Gauntlet, Onslaught, Marvel Knights ? No Danvers.

I read every issue of New Avengers as I said before - and I still feel like her re-introduction was forced. I read over all the story arcs. From my own aesthetic view out the window, Danvers is an ill developed character whom is easily supplanted by other females whom are complex and provocative as integral parts to the Marvel continuum. In all of my readings, Danvers is a wall flower with Wonder Man powers and great hair - if you have stories whereupon you feel she has shined please do share them and I will research again and recant and apologize. The mantle is a great thing and I hope it gets taken seriously as obviously you do as well. Thank you for taking the time to respond.

@evilvegeta74: Wrong on both counts. Mar-Vell can be replaced and he has been replaced multiple times. And Remender wasn't talking about the comic coming in July, he's talking about the AvX arc in Secret Avengers. Even then, writers lie and of you read the previews , Mar-vell in that arc is an antagonist and he's trying to stop them from saving the Kree. So obviously, that isn't the heroic Mar-vell.

Look - no disrespect to GMan or anyone else whom may share his beliefs about this matter, but I couldn't disagree more. What's most problematic is that I disagree on several points about the validity of GMan's assertions. One is closer to objective arithmetic, the other two are more aesthetic.

I really, really like Captain Marvel. I have hunted down most of the original series issue by issue for almost the whole Starlin run and then beyond (there were 62 issues in the original run when it concluded in '79). I have every issue David did from the early part of the decade (60 total from both series). I even paid attention when Mar-Vell was 're-introduced' for all of a few issues. The first point of this litany is - I like the character, and have some emotional and capital interest in him.

The second is that Danvers has not held down any sales numbers. Regardless as to any 50 issue run she established, if we're going to get monetary about this then I'd rather compare apples to apples. Caveat - I do not want them to bring back Mar-Vell. I own Marvel Graphic Novel # 1 - it's a beautifully written epic. I don't want to re-tread that historical milestone. All that said - why would putting her on a title hope to maintain readership beyond the initial fallout of a return to a beloved character.

Ask yourself - in the Marvel continuum, what has Danvers ever done ? I've been reading for over 20 years. I cannot think of a single series where I though to myself " Wow, this character was integral to this story being told.". I thought her re-intro during New Avengers was forced and awkward. And I'm old enough to remember Onslaught and Heroes Reborn. Yeah, I said it.

I have no idea who Danvers is and to be blunt don't care. I read about whom she was and have had a passing interest in whom she is much like I do when replying to a question about how my weekend was.... " Oh, it was fine.". Truly. The character is two-dimensional and barely at that. Look, I love blondes and buxom women - but I also married a woman whom was smarter than me so I could have someone remind me of what bad stories are when I try to convince her otherwise.

And before I hear any chauvinistic arrows being nocked my way - Phyla was a great choice. She was a character that had depth and a place where you could empathise with her during her stories. Look, after it's all said and done - I want the mantle to go on to someone whom deserves it and can carry the title for years to come. Not some affirmative action quota filler whom has suddenly become chic. Not some guy whom will be ret-conned in favor of the newest reboot to boost sales. Find the damn hero who can inspire like their namesake did.

A 50 issue run is nothing to scoff at. And that was a second run, the first being in the seventies when she was first introduced which ran for 25.

Not to convince you otherwise, but this is a hero that has been around for a long time -- has been involved in every major story-line and every team in some shape or form. For me, it has nothing to do with gender - this character would be a great fit for the mantle of Captain Marvel. You state you have no idea who Danvers is and don't care. Kind of hard to follow your reasoning for her not being a valid candidate with your honest admission of ignorance. She is a well developed, complex and and intriguing character. To think she would be an affirmative quota filler did make me laugh. First, that such a quota exists, and secondly, that it would be chic. Please, by all means, show me where a woman was used in such a way recently in comics?

I think the title of Captain Marvel is a pretty important one. Everyone qualified should be seriously considered, and Carol Danvers definitely qualifies.

If Mar-Vell isn't coming back (or is but isn't sticking around like he did in Chaos War) then Ms. Marvel is the perfect choice for Captain Marvel, if Mar-Vell is coming back then he should be Captain Marvel and not take up another identity like Steve did when he came back before Siege.

If she were to change her codename, I would much rather she used one of her former names; names that were unique to her.

You do realize that Carol isn't the only person to use the Ms.Marvel name, right? So it isn't unique to her. Neither is Warbird for that matter, since there is also another female Marvel hero with that name.

So your logic is flawed and there is nothing wrong with her becoming Captain Marvel.

@PrimeDirective: I did indeed, because he is. Most people don't even know who he is these days and the only good story he had was the one where he died. he was only created because Marvel noticed DC forgot to copyright the Captain Marvel name and even with that, DC's Captain Marvel is far more well known and interesting that Mar-Vell.

Monica,Phyla,Carol and Genis are all more well known a better choices for the Title. Plus, they are all far more interesting.

Plus Marvel needs another Female lead book and promoting Carol to Captain Marvel is a nice bonus. Plus, Carol actually is military.

i think thats why it should be Mar-vell, remender writes awesome stories and good characters so this is the perfect time to bring back Mar-Vell to a whole new generation and make him more than an open copy right or that guy who died before most of us were born. if marvel wants more strong female leads they should give them a solo with the creative team to do it, not put them in another person shoes...but then again remender would be my choice to launch any characters ongoing.

Actually, no, it's why it shouldn't be Mar-Vell and most people don't even know who he is anymore. Carol is far more well known and making her Captain Marvel is a bold and progressive move. It's something her last series was building to and it's something Carol fans have asked for. Plus, Marvel lacks a female lead ongoing book, this would fix that and then some.

Besides, Mar-Vell is pretty generic and there are already plenty of blond, blue eyed male heroes. We don't need another one.

Plus, it wouldn't be Remender writing the ongoing(It would be Kelly Sue Deconnick).

Having always liked and admired Ms. Marvel, I'm all for her becoming Captain Marvel. The title fits her, she's experienced, and I feel like she'll do a great job in the role. Mar-Vell is dead and it's unlikely he'll return, so it's better for Carol in that, as the new Captain Marvel, she will finally get the recognition and respect she deserves.

I'd rather Phylla.

Honestly as far as Carol is concerned I would rather they develop and work on her as Ms.Marvel, or at least Binary, rather than give up and sell a gimmick to sell her character. That kind of thinking and poor craftsmanship is what put her series in the dirt the last time. In fact, Captain Marvel was one of the last death nails in it's coffin. Carol needs her power set pushed, and to be pushed as an Avenger, and importantly, written well and with proper characterization. If they aren't even willing to do that much anymore, what will slapping a pair of nega-bands on her wrists solve?

She was Captain Marvel in House of M which fueled her to strive and become the greatest hero like she was in the House of M reality.

I think that if they allowed the character to realize that and put her in the forefront it would solve a lot of problems and would continue and finally conclude that whole story plot that was really driving the character and gained her a small base coming out of House of M.

Firstly, it'll feel like it finally came to pass, you don't put your heroes in a place where they set out to accomplish something and then have them a. fail or b. never mention it again.

Secondly, there's no female Marvel ongoings right now, to my knowledge. If you put enough manpower into Carol becoming Captain Marvel and push her to the forefront like they pushed some of their other B and C-List characters like Moon Knight and Luke Cage and what have you...I feel like if they gave a strong female lead a push and gave Carol a decent creative team and good stories that she could be one of Marvel's bigger names.

@wdchefdave said:

Carol Danvers is not a "Captain Marvel"!

Way back in the '60's she was there with Mar-Vell and she has been a great character for many years now.

But, never a captain!

Not being sexist.

Carol has served in the military.

There was also a female Captain Marvel, Monica Rambeau, and she was the second to carry the name.

Nah I like Ms.Marvel but no way she can't be the next Captain Marvel they are better off bringing back genis val or Mar vell to me she isn't fit to carry the Captain name. Let alone the marvel name in general.

Carol does deserve it the most, the right to be Captain finally. It would be far too obvious to have Mar-Vell take the title back in a day and age in which comic book death is so cliche anymore. My money's on Danvers.

Why Ms. Marvel shouldn't be Captain Marvel.

She is boring. Hal Jordan-level boring. But unlike Hal, she doesn't have an incredible supporting mythos and I doubt she will get one soon.

Get out. Seriously. The door is over there, take it.

The thing is once she becomes captain marvel...will someone (maybe genus vell) will kill her out of jelousy

If Carol were to die shortly after becoming Captain Marvel then, that will be the single greatest moment of Marvel giving the fans the middle finger ever.

No one can replace Mar-vell and the thought of that is totally absurd. Remender already tweeted that the real Mar-Vell is coming back in july, there's no need to entertain the thought of otherwise period!

Ms. Marvel is Ms. Marvel, not Captain Marvell. She got her powers from the Captain, but is her own character other than that.

And yes, please give Ms. Marvel hr own series already!

@VenomMelendez: Really? I remember Remender teasing on Twitter saying it was Mar-Vell and it wasn't a Skrull or a clone and was the real deal... writers are a bunch of liars!!

Ahhhh, at least Noh-Varr can last longer now.

It's going to be Mar-Vell. Already confirmed. By Remender himself.

Actually, it isn't really Mar-Vell. Read the solicits, it's a fake that works for Minister Marvel and the recent Solicit for Secret Avengers has him fighting the Avengers, because he's preventing them from saving the Kree from the Phoenix. And writers have lied.

Ah.
