Off My Mind: Why It's Time For Jean Grey's Return

Good characters shouldn't stay dead and Jean's returned from the dead before so why not one more time?

Jean Grey is the character that won't stay dead. Except she has been dead since X-Men #150 in 2004 (or 2005, if you want to include Phoenix: Endsong). Jean was one of the original X-Men. She and Cyclops were one of the few superhero couples to get married. With characters constantly dying and returning, it's surprising that Jean, the poster child for resurrections, still hasn't returned to comic book pages.

No Caption Provided

There are those that despise when characters die only to return shortly after. Batman and Captain America were both recently dead for around two years before their return. Have people forgotten about Jean? I tend to agree that comic book deaths are made cheap when the character returns. The characters start to become invincible and there's no need to worry if they get in perilous situations because we know writers will have an easy way out.

Jean is a character with a lot of potential and is too good to waste being relegated to comic book limbo. The fact that Scott is with Emma and we have some big changes coming up makes it the perfect time for Jean to return. If she happens to bring any remnants of the Phoenix Force, all the better.

To be fair, Jean's first death shouldn't even count. When she was originally dying from high levels of radiation in a damage space shuttle, she was placed a healing cocoon while the Phoenix Force took her place. Therefore her death/sacrifice in [Uncanny] X-Men #137 wasn't Jean's death.

It was her recent death that was pretty savage. Xorn, posing as Magneto, gave her the equivalent of a planetary-scale stroke. She died in Scott's arms.

Jean's death allowed for Scott and Emma to finally accept their feelings for each other. This led to both characters growing. Scott was no longer tied to Jean's side. Even when he thought he had moved on and married Madelyne Pryor, it turned out to be a clone of Jean.

Emma went from being a cold and unfeeling villainess to someone that we can believe truly cares for Scott. It was Jean in the future (I'm not getting into the Phoenix egg business in Grant Morrison's final X-Men issues) that sent her blessings to the two and saying they should be together and live.

No Caption Provided

Of course she sort of returned from her death. In Phoenix: Endsong, the Phoenix Force does attempt to resurrect Jean. Jean tells the Phoenix Force it's too early. We see a struggle between the two. The Phoenix Force basically has the hots for Scott and wants to return to him. There is a struggle throughout the miniseries between Jean and the Phoenix Force. Jean even asks Wolverine to kill her over and over in trying to weaken the Phoenix Force.

After some other X-Men shenanigans, Jean helps save the day and returns to the White Hot Room. Everyone is happy and things continue the way they were. Scott and Emma continue their relationship.

But it is time for Jean to return. Imagine what it would be like for Jean to catch up on everything that has happened. What would she think of Hope and the deaths of Cable and Nightcrawler. With Scott clearly having moved on (although there's bound to be a spark of feelings deep down), there are so many possibilities for Jean.

She has always been attached to Scott's side. Let's see what she can do on her own. If she wanted to, she could hook up with Wolverine, someone else or just be on her own. What would she think of the Uncanny X-Force team and their methods (would they really be able to keep it a secret from her?).

No Caption Provided

How could Jean come back? When it comes to the Phoenix Force, we know anything is possible. In Wolverine # 7 and 8 we saw that Wolverine had a piece of his subconscious dedicated to Jean. The Phoenix Force could try to latch onto that in order to return. That might be too much of a stretch. While we've seen Jean come back many times, the powers that be have firmly stated that Jean is dead.

But she's not really dead...at least not everywhere. Dark Phoenix did pop up in The Iron Age: Alpha but does that count since it involved Doctor Doom's Time Platform. If we're being desperate and if writers really want a way to bring Jean back, they just need to look at the pages of Uncanny X-Force #11. Why not have the Age of Apocalypse version journey over? We've seen plenty of other AoA residence in the 616-Universe and there's no reason Jean can't take the trip.

It is simply Jean's time to return. The original is preferable. Heck, I'd even settle for her return as Marvel Girl. She's been gone long enough. With the announcement of the X-Men being divided this fall and Wolverine leading his own team (most likely a team separate from Cyclops), we were teased that we'd be surprised at who followed who. If Jean came back and sided with Wolverine, it would make for some pretty juicy storytelling.

No Caption Provided

There's always been tension between Scott and Logan. We know from the Schism teasers that they will be fighting each other. I don't see the fight being over Wolverine continuing to lead an X-Force team that 's willing to kill. In Wolverine #8, Scott asked Logan why he mentioned Jean's name before regaining control of his body. Wolverine told him that wasn't the time to talk about Jean.

Which Jean should we have return? The original Jean, a Phoenix-enhanced version or her Age of Apocalypse counterpart? We may have limited numbers of mutants around thanks to Scarlet Witch and her "No more mutants" magic but most of them don't even come close to comparing to Jean. Who's with me? Let's all cry out for Jean to come back.

yes let's support the trite notion of character deaths not meaning anything.  no, she shouldn't return. no "dead" hero should.
This. By the way, Jean death will become a running gag.
It already has, my friend. Xavier has commented that mutant heaven must have revolving doors as well as a comment (I can't recall who by) saying something like: "Jean would be turning over in her grave... If she could stay in it for more than five minutes that is."

Yep yep. When characters die they should stay dead. cause people moan and complain saying characters should come back from the grave. though I was slightly against the Idea of Alpha Flight coming back from the dead. I was for say a temporary story where they kick tons of butt in chaos wars but bringing them back seems a bit silly. But then again if alpha flight dies I would have given them a better death then what they got in New Avengers which was cheap and stupid.

No, given how things are going with Marvel now, the only reason she'll come back is to be killed again.

With Emma, Rachael, & Hope around. Jean serves no purpose in Marvel at the moment. Let her stay in the White Hot Room or dead or comic limbo land for all I care.

I'm not against jean Grey coming back, but if she does, I'd rather she didn't stay with the X-men. She could do well in a cosmic title, where she be challenged by by incredibly powerful enemies and cut lose with her power without blowing up the world (well, not Earth anyway). Since she became Phoenix, it was always ridiculous to see her in a fight. Logically she should win easily against most foes, but it would make any story involving her dull, so we see her struggling against guys she should beat with a snap of her fingers.
At least against guys like Galactus, Thanos, the Beyonder or Annihilus, she could be more or less evenly matched.
I could totally see some of the Omega level mutants who are so hard to use reasonably on earth without becoming walking Deus ex Machina in a team of cosmic X-men, working off planet with SWORD or whatever.

I would love for her to return, but I am also in no rush for it to happen.   I think the hope story is going there in some form or another. so I am content with waiting longer.  we all know she's coming back. asap is not necessary.

Part of me wants to see Jean come back, in hopes it would put an end of those shots fo Scott and Emma sleeping with each other... but a large part of me could care less. Each time they kill Jean, they make a big deal about it, and then go great lengths to bring her back, only to have her die again then come back, then die, come back, die come back. Kinda leaves everything hollow...

So the Jean they found is the AOA verison right? Sorry I'm slow with this. My normal bookstore, actually started selling the comic books, I didn't get time to read it all. And I was only given a chance to skim through.

Does this also mean that this could be an opportunity to bring Nightcrawler temporarily too?

As for Jean coming back, I'd LOVE to have her back^^. I know a lot of people(some I know) hated her, but I still like her:). I just don't know if she'd have a place anymore in the comics. its been how many years since she was techincally killed by Magneto impersonator? A lots change, I'm just wondering if Jean(no matter which verison) will be able to have her own place amoung all these changes through the X-Men's story.

She should exactly where she is, in the White Hot room and out of my comics. The fact that the first thing you could think to do with her was have her be involved in relationship drama with Scott or Logan is plenty proof that she has nothing to offer as a stand alone character any more. Her time has long since past and she should remain out of action. The moment she became the Phoenix she ceased to grow as Jean Grey. From that point on it was all about the cosmic entity she was hosting and that's gone on to define her. The Phoenix became the core of the character and Jean became the husk it inhabited. The Phoenix has gone on to be in stories without her in them and is none the worse for it. I've seen a A LOT of bad decisions be made by recent editors/writers of X books, but the one thing I applaud them for above all else is their decision to stick to keeping Jean out of the mix. That is one of the best decisions I've seen happen in the Marvel U period and I hope future writers/editors have the good sense to continue that policy. Jean's had her time, she's served her purpose. The other characters don't need her, the stories don't need her. The only one's who want her back are those that are misguided fans who are slaves to nostalgia. Move on people, retrogressive storytelling is what's harming comics more than anything.

I"m totally against her coming back for many of the reasons you named. But if they moved her away from the X-Men and onto bigger scale cosmic fair I'd be all for it. Hell, under those conditions give her her own ongoing and I'd give it a chance. The biggest flaw in her and other Omega level mutants is they limit what you can reasonably do in stories and force you to either have them job out to foes they should outright obliterate or create even more ridiculously overpowered foes. Having Jean leave the earth and operating in the Marvel cosmos as the Phoenix of the White Crown could be a very interesting mini series. This would be especially true if we put the Phoenix to the side and focused on how all of this business has effected Jean the woman. Definitely some psychological and emotional gold to mine in this scenario.

@Thorion88:
I love Jean as much as any male raised on the 90's toon and Claremont's X-Men run with an affinity for redheads, but every writer since the Dark Phoenix saga has been essentially telling the same story with her and I'm way past reading it. If anything they make it all the worse when they try to play up some inane romance between her and Wolvie. If you can't write a female character without making the motivation or prize for male characters or have her motivated by something aside a relationship with a male character then you have failed to make a fully realized, multidimensional character.

I totally agree with you Thorion in that it works both ways that by making a character too dependent on their "other half" makes them kind of boring.  I both loved and hated Jean and Scott together.  When they were written as "real" people who's relationship complemented each other, and brought out eachother's strengths (like when they were raising Cable in the future or when Cable and Jean saved Cyclops from possession by Apocalypse) they were my favorite couple in comics. Whenever they became the "I'm useless without you around" people I couldn't stand it.

I have never thought the "love triangle" with Scott-Jean-Wolverine was a good idea/fit or all that "believable" and it always seemed that Jean with every other writer kept looking at Wolverine and thinking "ooooo - SHINEY" and then going back to Scott with the next writer.   I know you cannot always "choose" who you fall for, but in "real life" you may look at someone and think "damn (s)he is hot, but that is not the same as who you look for in a relationship. Considering how some writers at Marvel handle character couples, I've often wondered if any of them have actually been in a relationship.

While comics as a medium for storytelling allow for the fantastic; I prefer my comic characters to reflect "real life" more than a soap opera.  That may seem kind of silly, but if I want to see characters who betray their relationships constantly or fall into bed with whoever comes along I'll watch "Gossip Girl", "Days of our Lives", or "Desperate Housewives".

Sadly Jean Grey has often been a "Gossip Girl" and not a "Closer"...and Jean if she returns...deserves to be a closer.

Goodness, I sincerely hope that if Jean ever come back she and Cyclops won't be back together. Scott and Emma are more a more interesting couple than Scott and Jean ever were.
Jean and Scott always seemed to get in the way of each other's growth and development, while Cyclops has been able to change tremendously since he is with Emma (wether it was a positive or negative evolution is another debate).
Anyway, Jean Grey has too much potential as a character to be reduced as a half of a romantic duo with Cyclops. This relationship shouldn't define her. More specifically her writers have to stop focusing on that specific part of her.
Since becoming Phoenix, she was never able to fit harmoniously within the X-men community, but that's because their scene wasn't the correct one for her. She would fit more with the Guardians of the Galaxy who are more used to handle cosmic entities.

I'm going to say what I said before I want her back only if Phoenix is excercised or at least played down, make it to where she can control it and give her some form of storyline other than power and love.

But for the people against it; honestly people you don't have any real justifiable answer aside from change is bad you have no real point you can talk about how she's a bland character all day but thats your opinion and no one will give two sh*ts Jonesdeini your whole point for a nicer word is just plain ignorant and i'm not here to start a flame war just telling it like it is you do know her name is phoenix right a phoenix rises again and just as Jean Grey will rise again and to think or say anything else is just stupid, really nostalgia fuels Jean's return? I guess thats why Sue Storm is still in comics right? . It's a comic someone's going to die and come back it's the only way to keep it fresh and interesting. Retrogressive writing is the fuel of every comic you'll will ever pick up, "the same old same old" thrives in this business. i think your a slave to Joe "You'll Love the Changes I Swear" Q; In closing Ares will be back, Sentry will be back for the 15th anniversary of Siege, grass has grown over Jeans Grey's Grave so she's good as back and your all going to cry and whine and moan and blame every worker who had a hand in it and when she does something epic you'll eat it up and I'll be there outside you windows with a smug smile and nod.

If Marvel ever feels like repairing the damage they caused with House of M and returning back to some of the awesomeness of the Grant Morrison run, they could have Jean return as the White Phoenix and reverse Wanda's spell. The Phoenix does control all life and death after all.

Not really sure why ppl speak like Jean is "possessed" by the PHOENIX when it has been made pretty clear, in ENDSONG, she is a part of it (and it of her). That little revelation pretty much nullified the original duplicate Jean retcon if she's still supposed to be one with the force.
She is kinda like a female Silver Surfer to me; a cosmic force but still has her humanity and taking away the force would be like WOLVERINE w/out claws at this point.
The DARK PHOENIX SAGA was really downplayed when Jean returned (but appreciated because i love the character) and if they take away the force, then its like the entire saga (and one of the GREATEST comic stories) was a waste. That would be LAME.
When she does return, she really needs to leave Scott alone bcuz no matter what they do to him, he's still a bore and not EVERY story needs to be a phoenix story. Jean should keep the Phoenix stuff on the low, and use it ONLY when important Phoenix work needs to be done.

I think a little nostalgia is just what the X-Men need right now. Theyve been butchering beloved characters for far too long. ROGUE & PSYLOCKE; better back when; GAMBIT & STORM; barely even used anymore, JUBILEE; turned to vampire crap, brought back my girl MAGIK, only to have her slooowly be replaced by PIXIE. Introduced a few interesting "flashback" X-MEN in PETRA, DARWIN, SWAY, and VULCAN only to kill off 2, make 1 into a powermad villain only to kill him off later and the 1 left is a bore. Some of the cooler "new" characters like SAGE, LIFEGUARD, XORN, OMEGA SENTINEL, HELLION, ANOLE, MERCURY, and LOA (and many more) are just WASTED.
Killed off NIGHTCRAWLER, JEAN, LILANDRA, CABLE, ICARUS, WALLFLOWER, & SABRETOOTH to name a few. No HAVOK, POLARIS, or JUGGERNAUT w/ the team?
Everyone has been plagued with one LAME storyline after another. Brought back MADELYNE only to have her "vanish" into nothing?! Vulcan marrying DEATHBIRD and fighting BLACKBOLT? NECROSHA had the chance to bring back some interesting yet wasted characters like SYNCH, BLINK, and DAZZLER's sister, MORTIS...only to waste them again.
Only really good things the 2000's have given are THE STEPFORD CUCKOOS (and they even killed off some of them:-/), EMMA w/ the team, HOUSE OF M, and DECIMATION. They need to get back in touch with the core members and that means bringing Jean back since they have been missing the spark for quite a while.

@JonesDeini: I think a little nostalgia is just what the X-Men need right now. While I agree that X-Men has been all out of sorts in the oughts I completely disagree that bringing back Jean or any other such nostalgic actions are any sort of effectual and long term fix. What X-Men needs is passionate work from a creative team that gets the ins and outs of the team. It needs inventive, character driven stories, less internal/family events, and for writers to build on the good ideas that have come about recently. If they capitalize on the opportunities before them Uncanny can't be a top class, banner title again. In fact the first thing I'd like to see is a consolidation of the X titles. Adjectiveless and Astonishing can both get the axe when Uncanny renumbers in October as far as I'm concerned. Leave Legacy as the Sister title too Uncanny. By all accounts (I don't read them personally) New Mutants and X-Factor have been in a very good place creatively so leave them be. I'm not a fan of the current X-Force for various reasons, but hey, people seem to be eating it up so leave it be as well. One thing I would like to see is the various new characters put back to good use by writers, no reason an Omega level mutant like Elixir is in limbo. Also Havok et al. will be returning in the pages of Legacy this year.

im sick of marvel stating FIRMLY tatl shel stay dead nd a day later her popping up every which way... im tired of marvel saying scott has moved on wit emma nd his heart skipping a beat everytime he thinks about her... im disgusted at scott being called a leader and marvel now trying to make him 4get about jean and all his idealistic principles.... im angry tat marvel wants us to 4get about jean but keep making her appear in more flashbacks than da main storyline...
once and 4 all... BRING JEAN BACK...GET SCOTT/JEAN TOGETHER.... AND MOVE ON TO SOMETHING ND SOME1 ELSE.......

I deffinately like the idea of AoA Jean being in the 616 universe I think her desire for our wolverine would be interesting to show in front of Scott and Emma. Would be better than bringing back Jean Pheonix again.

Lame!!!

Emma is appealing as watching paint dry, and the  Scott/Emma relationship has been  really grating  since the beginning of it.

Bring jean back now!!

LOL, Nah you have to be kidding right? Emma's already over rated (Mean we get it she's hot and blonde... yaaa) ... An Besides the Phoenix Force belongs to Jean. Jean didn’t spend all her time dealing with it just to hand it over to Emma Haha that would be a disgrace. (an besides Ensongs proved that already when Jean ripped out the Phoenix Force out of her literally haha) An I mean that for any other character. Jean is the only one I can see ever welding the Phoenix Force. In addition, Im kinda tired of the whole Jean/Scott thing... I don’t want even get into the idea of having drama with Emma and Scott... that would be lame.

I agree with: sandman813

BRING BACK Jean/Phoenix... :)

Why bring her back she will more and likely become a random cameo character in the main stay like Storm or another member of their large cast. It's all about Cyke, Emma and Wolverine with an occasional Pryde and Rassputin story. Ilike Jean, but her return is just a slap to idea of death in comics.
