Off My Mind: Why It's Time For Jean Grey's Return

Good characters shouldn't stay dead and Jean's returned from the dead before so why not one more time?

Jean Grey is the character that won't stay dead. Except she has been dead since X-Men #150 in 2004 (or 2005, if you want to include Phoenix: Endsong). Jean was one of the original X-Men. She and Cyclops were one of the few superhero couples to get married. With characters constantly dying and returning, it's surprising that Jean, the poster child for resurrections, still hasn't returned to comic book pages.

No Caption Provided

There are those that despise when characters die only to return shortly after. Batman and Captain America were both recently dead for around two years before their return. Have people forgotten about Jean? I tend to agree that comic book deaths are made cheap when the character returns. The characters start to become invincible and there's no need to worry if they get in perilous situations because we know writers will have an easy way out.

Jean is a character with a lot of potential and is too good to waste being relegated to comic book limbo. The fact that Scott is with Emma and we have some big changes coming up makes it the perfect time for Jean to return. If she happens to bring any remnants of the Phoenix Force, all the better.

== TEASER ==

To be fair, Jean's first death shouldn't even count. When she was originally dying from high levels of radiation in a damage space shuttle, she was placed a healing cocoon while the Phoenix Force took her place. Therefore her death/sacrifice in [Uncanny] X-Men #137 wasn't Jean's death.

It was her recent death that was pretty savage. Xorn, posing as Magneto, gave her the equivalent of a planetary-scale stroke. She died in Scott's arms.

Jean's death allowed for Scott and Emma to finally accept their feelings for each other. This led to both characters growing. Scott was no longer tied to Jean's side. Even when he thought he had moved on and married Madelyne Pryor, it turned out to be a clone of Jean.

Emma went from being a cold and unfeeling villainess to someone that we can believe truly cares for Scott. It was Jean in the future (I'm not getting into the Phoenix egg business in Grant Morrison's final X-Men issues) that sent her blessings to the two and saying they should be together and live.

No Caption Provided

Of course she sort of returned from her death. In Phoenix: Endsong, the Phoenix Force does attempt to resurrect Jean. Jean tells the Phoenix Force it's too early. We see a struggle between the two. The Phoenix Force basically has the hots for Scott and wants to return to him. There is a struggle throughout the miniseries between Jean and the Phoenix Force. Jean even asks Wolverine to kill her over and over in trying to weaken the Phoenix Force.

After some other X-Men shenanigans, Jean helps save the day and returns to the White Hot Room. Everyone is happy and things continue the way they were. Scott and Emma continue their relationship.

But it is time for Jean to return. Imagine what it would be like for Jean to catch up on everything that has happened. What would she think of Hope and the deaths of Cable and Nightcrawler. With Scott clearly having moved on (although there's bound to be a spark of feelings deep down), there are so many possibilities for Jean.

She has always been attached to Scott's side. Let's see what she can do on her own. If she wanted to, she could hook up with Wolverine, someone else or just be on her own. What would she think of the Uncanny X-Force team and their methods (would they really be able to keep it a secret from her?).

No Caption Provided

How could Jean come back? When it comes to the Phoenix Force, we know anything is possible. In Wolverine # 7 and 8 we saw that Wolverine had a piece of his subconscious dedicated to Jean. The Phoenix Force could try to latch onto that in order to return. That might be too much of a stretch. While we've seen Jean come back many times, the powers that be have firmly stated that Jean is dead.

But she's not really dead...at least not everywhere. Dark Phoenix did pop up in The Iron Age: Alpha but does that count since it involved Doctor Doom's Time Platform. If we're being desperate and if writers really want a way to bring Jean back, they just need to look at the pages of Uncanny X-Force #11. Why not have the Age of Apocalypse version journey over? We've seen plenty of other AoA residence in the 616-Universe and there's no reason Jean can't take the trip.

It is simply Jean's time to return. The original is preferable. Heck, I'd even settle for her return as Marvel Girl. She's been gone long enough. With the announcement of the X-Men being divided this fall and Wolverine leading his own team (most likely a team separate from Cyclops), we were teased that we'd be surprised at who followed who. If Jean came back and sided with Wolverine, it would make for some pretty juicy storytelling.

No Caption Provided

There's always been tension between Scott and Logan. We know from the Schism teasers that they will be fighting each other. I don't see the fight being over Wolverine continuing to lead an X-Force team that 's willing to kill. In Wolverine #8, Scott asked Logan why he mentioned Jean's name before regaining control of his body. Wolverine told him that wasn't the time to talk about Jean.

Which Jean should we have return? The original Jean, a Phoenix-enhanced version or her Age of Apocalypse counterpart? We may have limited numbers of mutants around thanks to Scarlet Witch and her "No more mutants" magic but most of them don't even come close to comparing to Jean. Who's with me? Let's all cry out for Jean to come back.

I don't understand why some people don't want her back. It's make more sense if she came back, cause comics will get a whole lot better with her in them. Just look at X-Men history, some of the best stories ever told, feature her.

Age of Apocalypse, Dark Phoenix Saga, Fatal Attractions, Here Comes Tomorrow, Legion Quest, The Prime of Miss Emma Frost & Murder at the Mansion, Onslaught, Phoenix: Endsong, Phoenix: Warsong, Planet X, Ultimatum, X-Cutioner's Song & X-Tinction Agenda, Mutant Genesis etc. Some of them I just like and some of them I loved. In most of them, she had a part to play.. Stories are a lot better with her, then without her.

Over last couples of years, what stories and titles have been that good

Messiah Complex

Messiah War

Craig Kylie & Christopher Yost work on the X-Force

Joss Whedon run

That's really it.

Uncanny X-Force, X-Men legacy and X-Factor are ok titles, they have a few good stories and they also have a lot of rubbish to. Regenesis only started at end of 2011, you can't really judge on how good it's going be, cause, it just started.

To me it just make more sense to bring her back, the X-Men will probley go back to being like family again. Beast might make up with Cyclops and Charles will probable return.

On top of that, there will be more rivalry in X-Men, paricular between Emma & Jean and maybe even Scott and Logan. I have just read Generation Hope 15, Hope implied that Emma is a slut and Emma slap her. No one want's that type rivalry again. Really? With Jean it will be a whole a lot better.

Just makes more sense to bring her back. More drama, better stories will be told.

Yes, Deathlok Nation, was rubbish

Apocalypse Solution was ok

The tied in with fear-self was rubbish

The only good story was, The Dark Angel Saga and that feature Jean Grey

Craig Kylie & Christopher Yost work on the X-Force is much better than Uncanny X-Force, miles ahead of it in every way.

Well each to there own. Do you think stories will be better if Jean came back. Honestly.

A majority of titles over last couple of years has been ok, but nothing really special.

I mean the Cables series was ok, had few good stories and few bad ones. Same goes for X-23 series and Wolverines Origins. Generation Hope I think is rubbish title, so far I only like issue 15. New Mutants is also a poor title. I like Blink and X-Man and I hope the title gets better. Matt Fraction made Uncanny X-Men a rubbish title and that was for 4-5 years.

@time: I'm definately hoping for Jean's return, but I don't think getting better or worse lies with a character. If she comes back and it's written poorly it'll be even worse.

I can agree with you on most of the likes/dislikes you mentioned, but I love Uncanny X-force. Uncanny X-men under Gillen is pretty good, and I find Wolverine atxm really fun and kind of refreshing from the really serious, dark and often depressing x-books.

Wolverine and X-Men is ok, I hate the artists though. I'm trying to like Uncanny X-Men, but it's really hard for me, cause I'm not really a fan of Emma & Scott, it's been about them for too long. It's time for change. I like X-Men with Storm, Psylocke, Jubilee, Warpath and Domino. I am looking foward to Astonishing X-Men with Gambit, I think that will be good. The biggest the problem I have with comics is there too much inconsistency. There not enough good stories and there to many characters and not enough are being explore.

The best series, in the last 8 years for me, has been Craig Kylie & Christopher Yost work on the X-Force. Amazing writing and amazing artwork. Great character development too. There was only one story I didn't love and that was Necrosha. All the rest were great.

If Jean was return and it was poorly written, I wouldn't mind cause I know comics would get better. Charles would be more involved and so would a lot of other characters. Cyclops and Emma would be focus on a lot less, which is always a good thing.

I think bringing Jean back will bring up a lot of potential story lines. The big stories lately have involved Hope and crossovers. I like the big x-men storylines to be contained in the X books and I would like to see one that didn't involved Hope.

This might sound like a pretty stupid thing to say, but maybe Marvel could, I don't know, try giving Jean Grey her own series?

Just think about it for a minute. The woman, when she's not dying every ten issues, is obviously an immensely powerful being who's spent her time running around with a guy who can shoot lasers from his eyes (not to say that's not useful, because it is), but I've personally always pictured telepaths and telekinetics to be incredibly powerful and nearly god-like. She could leave the X-Men, and she wouldn't have to join the Avengers, which seems like a popular thing to do nowadays. I think it would be pretty interesting, and I'm always in favor of more superheroines having their own series. Marvel could use more of those (ever notice how Sue Storm, Scarlet Witch, She-Hulk, Spider-Woman, etc. are mostly supporting characters?), in my opinion.

Keep in mind that what I just listed what pretty much a "what-if?". Aside from all that, Marvel should just LEAVE. HER. DEAD.

Please just no, can't dead people stay dead anymore? I love Cassie Lang in Young Avengers, but I hope she stays dead because it would have cheapened her sacrificed.

I think Jean should come back and Emma Frost take her place.(; But honestly, I'd love to see her back (maybe helping Logan with his school?) but not if she's just going to keep dying and returning. Anybody think she'll make a return as/because of Hope and the Phoenix?

It's Jean Grey. She won't stay dead because Marvel knows they can make money from the woman who was at the centre of one of their iconic sagas (the whole identity thing is just to jarring to go into). Hell, their making money off of her legacy right now.

Her return is inevitable, it's just a matter of when.

YES!

I agree its Time She COMES BACK! Jean is one of the Best X-Characters that we cant get enough of. Honestly I’m tired of Wolverine, who never dies and is in Every Team and Now going to be a major mutant leader?... With Jean/Phoenix at least she keeps us surprised with every return. I would love Marvel even more if she came back.

OH! the Possibilities of her return would really RoCK the X-World and maybe the Marvel Universe... hehe

For instance:

Id like to see how Jean (including Marvel Girl) handles the whole HOPE "Phoenix power suggestion" thing (whatever goin on theres) and see what comes out of it and how they handle this so called Messiah. In addition, The whole phoenix power disappearing thing (from Marvel Girl and her bf’s Sword that contained a phoenix feather) that happened awhile back during the War of Kings...

Jean could also come back and embrace the Phoenix Force and have a greater role in the Marvel Universe (hints: no longer having Scott and nothing to live for on Earth, it would be nice to see Jean take notices in finding out what the Phoenix's purpose and role in the cosmos is ) for instance, hints getting involved in what’s going on in deep space, seeking help to find a way to finally get rid or contain the dark side (Dark Phoenix) or even reclaim the M'KRAAN CRYSTAL as her own! Humm

K my last What Could happen: Jean/Phoenix comes back and decides to recruit others in doing so imprinting its own powers on other selected individuals (candidates: like Rogue temporary absorbing and possessing the Phoenix power, Marvel Girl, of course, Legion,  and Hope) (No Not Emma or the Cuckoos, been there done that haha we get it already their hot characters) using them as a means of a team against the next Apocalypse or a mission to fix some of the deep space issues happening.

I will say there is one main thing about Jean/Phoenix return thats got'in annoying... and thats the whole Dark Phoenix thing... mean I think its time we moved on from that.

Man! So many Awesome things can come of her Return!

Defiantly Jean’s return will change things in the X-World in one way or another.

Hey! whatever happened to “MAKE MINE MARVEL!” haha

couldnt agree more.....marvel has alot of loose ends to fill

Really sucks there introducing past Jean into the comics, and trying to act like she counts as bringing Jean back. It doesn't count. I want the real Jean to come back.

Just think if they have that jean collect her memories from her "friends" she has yet to meet in her time that could make for an interesting story

Rachel can train her which would be pretty cool

Problem is this jean is 17 O_O But they did retcon that her powers during that time were progressing in leaps and pounds(based on all the x-men first class stories and such)

Jean should come back and chastise Scottie for rejecting all his morals to become a near facist. On the other hand, if we read Morrison's run correctly, Jean left the playing field to allow Scott to be with Emma. It was as if she knew that the idealistic woman she is could not deal with what eventually had to happen. Remember, the last time she died, House of M had not happened, all the tragedy associated with Messiah Complex hadn't happened. SUre, she dealt with Genosha, but Jean Grey was the epitome of Xavier's dream. She would love Logan's new school but probably reject Utopia. Now we get to find out, yes?

the original Jean Grey all the way. obviously she would have the phoenix powers (unless they give them to hope). i prefer the no code name jean grey and she needs to get back with scott. they are soulmates and their love story is the most beautiful thing i've ever read. they belong together, no matter who they are with that other person would never live up to what they had and it would be a disservice to all parties involved. i would also love to see the family aspect of the summers clan since all the Grey kids are alive and in the same timeline (nate, cable, and rachel). we have seen scott and jean deal with the kids individually but i would love to see how all five characters interact with each other and what team would she join. also storm and jean are best friends, a relationship that has been down played since the dissolussion of the gold team in the 90's. i would love a one issue story focusing on these two reconnecting and catching up and showing their bound as "sisters"
