Off My Mind: Why it's Time For Cyborg to Take the Spotlight

Cyborg has been elevated to Justice League status in the New 52 but hasn't really had a chance to do too much.

One of the biggest changes for the Justice League in the New 52 was with the seventh member. Originally Martian Manhunter was one of the founding members but instead, Cyborg took that slot. Cyborg used to be a founding member of the Teen Titans but now it appears as if he never had anything to do with Dick Grayson, Starfire, and the other original members.

No Caption Provided

Having Cyborg part of the Justice League was a big step for him. It was like an immediate graduation. He was now on equal grounds with Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman and the others. The problem is, not much is being done with Cyborg.

Since joining the Justice League, Cyborg is basically their mode of transportation. Being fused with some technology from Apokolips, Cyborg has the ability to create Boom Tubes that lets the team teleport to where they need to go. He's even mentioned to the Flash that he pretty much just sits around the Watchtower. Does that mean that's all he's done the past five years when not on a Justice League mission?

We are seeing Cyborg pushing his way to the forefront in Throne of Atlantis. In JUSTICE LEAGUE #15, he mentions drowning if he teleported to the wrong location. His father reminds him that they've had "additional environmental protective modes" ready to install into him for months. In order to do this, he'd have to lose the one remaining lung he has left.

When Victor was caught in the explosion that destroyed most of his body, it was replaced with machinery and technology. He's doing his best to retain his humanity and keeping a lung over having an underwater breathing apparatus shows this. It's a small thing but losing that one lung means one step closer to losing his human side and becoming more of a machine.

When the League is down and at the mercy of Ocean Master, Cyborg makes a decision for the good of the team. The Justice League has been defeated and taken to Atlantis. Without a second thought, Victor goes to his father and tells him to add the environmental mode to his body. Losing his second lung may mean being one step closer to fully becoming a machine but as he tells his father, all he needs is is brain and heart.

No Caption Provided

It appears that it's going to be up to Cyborg to save the team. He's already connected to everything. He can access all forms of communication. He uses this to call for reinforcements by connecting himself to 'the grid' while talking to his father. With the Mother Box technology integrated into him, he can also open a boom tube and teleport anywhere he can think of. With this new upgrade, it sounds like breathing in different atmospheres won't be a problem.

No Caption Provided

Many of us have been wondering why Cyborg was pushed into the spotlight during Flashpoint and in the Justice League since he hasn't really done too much. This could be his moment to show everyone what he can do. If he is able to save the Justice League when Superman, Wonder Woman and Batman all failed, it will raise Cyborg's credibility.

It has been strange with all the other League members having their own solo titles and Cyborg has been the only one without one. It's hard to say what a solo title with him would be like since he's spent so much time apparently just sitting around the Watchtower.

Perhaps with the decision to take more initiative with the team in adding modifications to himself and making the call to have new members become active, Cyborg is no longer willing to sit behind and wait for the next time he's needed to act as the League's transport.

The idea of a young hero making sacrifices and trying to retain his humanity is something that should be explored. He was a brilliant character in the pre-New 52 so he should be given the opportunity to step out on his own and show the world what he's made of…and not just machinery.

I like to think that Cyborg used to hang out with Dick, Kory, Roy, and Gar back in the day but after they disbanded, he grew to become depressed so he just hangs out on the Watchtower 24/7. Because as we all know, the Justice League is not nearly the same as the Titans.

I can't wait to read this tomorrow. He does deserve to be in the spotlight. Its annoying that he was such a huge star and huge successful part of the Teen Titans and was then elevated to the JLA where he has done absolutely nothing. And then they changed history to say that all the huge stuff he did with the Titans never happened and he has been with the JLA this whole time like he is now.

No Caption Provided
No Caption Provided

I don't know what the article says yet, I'll read it tomorrow. But I think one thing that should be done is give him an arch enemy, Superman has Lex Luther, Hal Jordan has Sinestro, Batman has the Joker, I say Cyborg should have A.M.A.Z.O. And like Sinestro, AMAZO's origin and Cyborg's origin are intertwined. He was created by Ivo (who is now part of the lab with Cyborg's father and T.O. Morrow). I see AMAZO's and Cyborg's relationship being similar to Sinestro's and Hal's or Black Adam's and Captain Marvel's. AMAZO isn't exactly a bad guy, or doesn't see himself as that, he sees him and Cyborg as brothers. Cyborg is a human who is becoming a robot and AMAZO is a robot who is becoming human (or wants to or is trying to)(Or maybe AMAZO wants Cyborg to embrace being a robot and join him against the humans). With them having that sort of relationship where they fight but they can also have a deep conversation. Because AMAZO is sort of the only guy Cyborg can talk to, maybe understand, what he is going through. I think giving Cyborg that sort of arch enemy would help his status, give him something else to do while not in the JLA.

Not sure who mentioned it, maybe me or someone else, said that the Metal Men could play a part as well.

I see Vic Stone's character arc being like, he was an athlete going to make it big. But more importantly he loved sports, then he became a machine man. Feeling like a freak he isolated himself from the rest of the world in the Watchtower. But as time goes by he has sacrificed more of his body to machines to aid the JLA and his father. Now he is getting to the point where he feels like he is going to loose the last part of humanity he has, so he decides to try and keep it. He moves to Earth and tries to live as Vic Stone, which is hard since he hasn't for a long time. He meets that girl who works with kids with Prosthetics (name?) and she becomes a friend (like MJ or Harry Osborne to Peter). So this is his quest to reclaim and keep his humanity. He wears clothing over his robot parts, he tries to just be a normal guy. And maybe adventures ensue.

Just some of my ideas.

And I read another's blog here, they said that the cast of characters should include his father (a strained relationship), T.O. Morrow, Ivo, Magnus, and the others from the Red Room lab.

I can't wait to read the article tomorrow.

About the never had been a Teen Titans, perhaps one of his adventures sends Vic back in time where he helps found the Teen Titans with Dick, Kory, and the rest, and he could spend like a year or half a year there and then go back home, and the history books are forever changed. Suddenly its known that they were the Teen Titans before the current series was. But only because he went back in time. Just an idea how they can do both, the New 52 and keep the old Pre-52 Titans.

I was wondering why they exiled martian manhunter. He always seemed like the heart of the JLA. His not often having his own book and having been in more incarnations of the team than any other leaguer. His powerset was big as the big three, Grant Morrison said he was stronger than superman with his similar kryptonian powers in addition to telepathy/shapeshifting/intangibility/invisibility. I assumed the choice to include cyborg would lead to something prove he deserved MMs spot on the team, then...nothing. I hope this arc finally proves he belongs on the team. I always saw him as a million dollar man type (cyborg but basically a human with many enhancements) but they are painting him as a robocop (cyborg but basically a robot trying to hold onto his humanity). this seems like an interesting change. Hopefully they do something with it and prove he belongs on the premier team in DC.

i always wonder what cyborg solo title would be like!

i mean he sits around the watchtower doing nothing so why give him a title?

this new "team" could help give him more purpose....maybe he can act as a leader to this secondary division of the team and lead them when the main league isn't available!

another thing i was wondering is why he called green arrow in #16?isn't he part of a different team now or maybe this is a plot point? who knows.....

Riiight... In a book with the Trinity, GL and Flash, Cyborg should take the spotlight.

Also, Martian Manhunter is the heart of the JL. Cyborg is the heart of the Titans.

Since he can teleport between dimensions and his father and Ivo are interdemsional specialists, I could see Cyborg being the guardian between dimensions. And he'd have Sarah Charles, Anthony Ivo, and Silas Stone for his supporting cast. As for villains? Ivo's creations? Interdimensional beasts? Other sentient machines? All of the above? It could work with the right creative team.

Well snce Cyborg is the only one without his own title in Justice League...

And since he's a founder and center of communication...

I would say Cyborg is the digital heart of the Justice League and deserves more spotlight

It'd be great to see Cyborg do more with the League and what not but in all honesty all I really want him to do is crossover with Nightwing for at least one issue, in JL or Nightwing I'm not picky, so at least even if they aren't teammates anymore he can at least start being friends with the former titans members. I can only hope I guess.

Cyborg is basically the new Oracle. The best thing they could do for him if he isn't going to be in the thick of every fight in Justice League is at least put him in the ear of most of the superheroes, like Oracle used to be.

I think Cyborg was always meant to be the 'Mission COntrol' character of the league. But I think that role only works when you place an established character in that slot, because the character is regualted to the side lines and is used very seldom.

Think J'onn J'onzz on the classic JLU animated shows, later Mr Terrific. Or how Vision used to function on the Avengers when was being repaired.

With how the JL operates with such a large headquarters and the scope of what they do, I think the role make sense, but it just takes some of the fun out of him being on the team

I like to think an ongoing Cyborg series is in the making, and Justice League is like a base to setting it up. I like this New52 Cyborg and I also thought Flashpoint Cyborg was great, I guess we can only play the waiting game.

I haven't read the flashpoint issues that had him in (I will rectify that post haste!) but i always thought that a cyborg series would be great..as DC don't really have any stories in the tech sphere of the genre. well i havent seen any. Could give Marvel's Atomic Knights (Tony Stark, Reed Richards, Hank Pym, Bruce Banner) a run for their money

Despite the fact Cyborg shouldn't be a founding League member, he unfortunately is and so Johns needs to do something with him. It's taken him 16 blasted issues to actually have Cyborg progress character wise and all the arguments (good ones too) that Viners have given for him being in the League haven't come to fruition. So overall he needs to start proving himself rather than laying about on the sidelines.

I would love to read a Cyborg mini where he tried to live a normal life on Earth but still help out the League. But being unable to hide his technology and being a high profile hero with a public identity he finds it too hard and moves back to the Watchtower. Course there would be more to it than that but could be a good read.

I'm pretty sure Steve Trevor hasn't made any official teams yet so it's safe to assume that the main league does not know that Steve already recruited Green Arrow and assumes that he's just freelancing at the moment.

One thing to consider is that Cyborg as a member of the Justice League is a total recall to the former animated "The Super Powers Team: Galactic Guardians" the last season of The Super Friends series. Along with Firestorm they are/were important members of the group in that animateds and a classic itiself. Is quite clear that Geoff Johns and Jim Lee were fans of the cartoon. Hope that firestorm will join the group as well and be a great member.

Never much liked Cyborg. He should be given his own series. Seems most other really do dig him. Over in the other camp Gambit has hos own book (dislike him as well) and enjoys popularity. He needs to be seen alone taking on something big to show us his is big enough to stand with the rest of the JL.

Well, Detroit, Cyborg's hometown is more closely connected to other dimensions due to the Darkseid Invasion. Parademons and other New God bad guys escape into Detroit often, so Vibe fights them ans seals dimensional rifts. Sounds like that should be Cyborg's job when you think of his abilities, background, and relationship to Detroit.

I have a hard time with Cyborg being on the Justice League, as it is now. I think if they were going to elevate one Titan to JLA membership, they should have elevated them all, and let the icon characters create another team. Most of the Titans have been JLA members at some point anyway. It's time to let all of the sidekicks grow up into the roles they were groomed for, and let the icons move on to something else. The icons would make much more sense as The Global Guardians.

@Superdork: Thanks so much. Glad you liked it. I would love to read this too.

More ideas: And I think while trying to reconnect with humanity and keep his humanity (because little by little, organ by organ he feels he is becoming less human and more robot) he could even move in with his dad on Earth. Much later down the line, maybe after 12 issues of his own solo about him and his humanity (and what qualifies as life and humanity and AI) and pits Cyrborg against AMAZO, we could get a story where Vic's father has a revolutionary experiment for his son. He can start replacing organs and body parts little by little, a lung here, a vertebrae there. Over years Vic could be almost completely human again. But will he be able to give up being Cyborg? At this stage how would he feel about that? So, to needlessly recap, 1st arc would be about Cyborg moving back to Earth and trying to save his humanity. 2nd arc could be about Cyborg possibly becoming human again.

Also, AMAZO's origin could be tied directly to Cyborg's. Ivo works in the same lab that created Cyborg during the Darksied invasion in Justice League. So maybe Ivo used the data and schematics about Cyborg's body and other tech from the Red Room and his own tech and genius, and created AMAZO. Giving AMAZO and Cyborg a stronger connection.

He definitely needs his own series! You could promote Shazam into an ongoing title and have Cyborg inherit the Justice League backup pages before getting his own book as well.

Cyborg has so much unmet potential and he's only now starting to get development because his only book is Justice League.

aint going to happen. he's a token. they just put him in there so they could say "see we have diversity". yeah ONE black guy in a team of all whites so diverse. one of the reasons i like justice league international waaaaaaaay better. now THAT was diversity dc, bring it back please. but at least we got black panther back. before new 52 despite growing up a marvel (mostly for x-men) i became a dc. now with all the goodness that marvel now is throwing my way and the 52 for the most part being a little stale am once again a marvel :)

Token black character or not, Cyborg is a character in his own right. He was the heart and soul of the Teen Titans for years and now he's in the Justice League. I see no reason why that would change. I'd like to see them show him a little love. As for Marvel... you're kidding right? All they've done is take all their books and make everything one large group where all members of all franchises are now all in the same groups. There's absolutely no variety any more.
