Off My Mind: Why Doesn't Hulk Ever Have a Mustache?

Have you ever seen him shave?

No Caption Provided
Why doesn't Hulk ever have a mustache? The same could be asked about Red Hulk. This idea came into my head at the Long Beach Comic Con when I was talking to Tom Pinchuk and Ray-Anthony Height (yes, there was talk about the Invincible comic as well).

You might say that since Bruce Banner doesn't have a mustache, Hulk shouldn't either. I do recall a period of time when Bruce was on the run and started getting pretty scruffy (back when he was calling himself "Mr. Green" and was talking to "Mr. Blue" on his computer). When Bruce changed, Hulk was as clean shaven as our intern Lemon.

Also, let's take Red Hulk into consideration. Hopefully this won't be a spoiler for you but Red Hulk's identity has been revealed. In Hulk #23, there was even a two-page spread showing the transformation.
 == TEASER ==

No Caption Provided

Where does Thunderbolt Ross' mustache go? You can't say that Hulks can't grow facial hair because in the future as the Maestro, Hulk has a pretty full beard going on.

What makes Hulk grow facial hair. I've never seen Hulk shaving. Is his hair stronger than normal hair? Would he need a special razor in order to shave (maybe Wolverine could use his claws to help out).

Since Hulk's transformation has a lot to do with his emotional state and psyche, there could be something there involved. Mustaches and facial hair are sometimes seen as representing an evil character. Could it be that Hulk and Red Hulk don't see themselves as "evil" and Maestro knows he's a mean son of a bitch?

What are your thoughts on mustaches? Do you think Hulk should ever have one? Would you like to see other characters sporting them?

(A special thanks to Joey and Tom Selleck for making that first image possible and for bringing tears of laughter to my eyes).

I always thought that maybe his skin grows over the hair and that's why his hair is longer as Banner than as Hulk

I always thought it was a reset button when he changed back to the Hulk. As opposed to the Hulk and Bruce being to seperate people sharing the same space. Like Rick/Captain Marvel

When he appears after a transformation it resets the clock, I am sure if he was The Hulk long enough periods you will see the beginnings of facial hair, and his hair would grow in length as well
like his future renditions as the Maestro ( sorry about the spelling)

It could just be how their faces stretch and grow bigger making the hairs further apart and unnoticeable in comparison.

Because he would look more like Mike Haggar of Final Fight/Saturday Night Slam Masters fame, and Capcom might sue... Wait a second.  Marvel and Capcom are pretty buddy/buddy what with Marvel vs Capcom and all those other titles.  Perhaps the Hulk IS Mike Haggar after being exposed to.....   No, that's just silly. :P

I dig Hulk with the lumber jack beard/mustache combo. Helps with the brooding, I want to be left alone vibe.

Maybe it is all in the secrets of Gamma radiation...like mentioned before, it can turn jeans purple and elastic, it somehow made Leader's head huge instead of just enhancing his mental stats in his regular sized head..., maybe it is just a radical, random growing/shrinking effect with the mustache

Hulk's lack of a mustache is probably related to aesthetics and is the opposite of why MARIO and LUIGI HAVE mustaches. When they were 8 bit..the creator said he added the mustache so they would be more recognizable as people. They wouldn't look right without them.I think Hulk not having a mustache gives more of a linear feel to the character..everyone can do a good Hulk without having to distort his look with a thick Ned Flanders mustache.Rulk should have one.It doesn't make sense that he doesn't...but then again it doesn't make sense that Gamma Radiation from within turns jeans purple...

@Nova`Prime`: I would think wearing the leather outfits in battles would raise a stink. I suppose spandex breathes a little better? They must spend a lot on deodorant. Guess everyone's lucky Hulk mainly wears ripped pants and nothing else. Imagine what his body odor would smell like...future Off My Mind?

Why no mustache?

Why do all of Banner's clothing rip off during transformation except for his pants?

Why are those pants suddenly purple all the time no matter what Banner wears?

Why are Red Hulk's hair black when Ross has white hair?

I think we can keep going with these types of questions. But, in my opinion, it all comes down to how cool it looks.

And honestly, the Hulk was created in 1962 (nearly half a century ago), we know very well that artists didn't consider minute details like the ones we look for in our day and time. Kirby probably had no time to consider everything seeing as how many projects he was working on. And of course, any artist who took the reigns since the characters' inception just carried the ball as is.

I think the reason for hulk's later beards and fuller facial hair is because in those stories he dones'nt revert back to banner. if he is the hulk the entire time, his bodies grows hair normally and funtions normally (or atleast as normal as a gamma radiated body can) and thats why when he reverts back and forth that starts over, thus no facial hair. That's my theory anyway

I always thought that Maestro in the future had hair because he didn't turn back to Banner for a very long time. The same could be said when the Hulk when he has a beard or partial facial hair. He just wasn't Banner for a period of time and it grew. Banner also shaved himself bald but it grew when he was the Hulk at a point.
For Ross he isn't a true Hulk but an imperfect copy of the qualities associated with the Hulk and that could be one of the faults of it or just a side effect. I mean he doesn't get physically stronger either as an example.
Last idea might be the psychological part. Ross wanted to copy Hulk so he looked like him as his image is burned in his hate filled mind with the skin color being the only difference. When Banner changes his mindset reverts to the Hulk persona that emerges making himself look like what the persona identifies himself as its self image.

These are just guesses though. lol

However, Maestro and that Hulk from the "Old Man Logan" storyline are both from different universes. Which means they have different things in common from the main counterparts.

It just comes down to the artists really, some actually say hey he could use a stache and some are just like NO his gamma is so powerful anything besides that mop of hair on his head is impossible.

Thinking of this, I recall times where Hulk's hair was so short he ended up looking like he had one of those mushroom tops like Moe from the 3 stooges.

Besides that we already got characters like Hercules in the Marvel U who sport full on beards, part of me feels like Hulk would be less intimidating if he had facial hair simply because it would cover up his angry expressions, like soften the blow so to speak.

OK, this is very bad dialogue and a very very quick sketch, but this is sort of the idea I was talking about.

In all the previous issues, and panels, prior to the big reveal that Ross was Red Hulk, he used a fake mustache.

You're right Red Hulk should have a mustache. i guess clean shave is just easier to draw and generally less goofy and corny.

What I would have loved is if when Red Hulk turned back into Ross:

Red Hulk revealed as Ross
Red Hulk revealed as Ross
In this panel, he should have had no mustache.  Then it is revealed that all the times we saw him in past issues with a mustache they were all fakes.  With a panel showing him with a fake mustache and gluing it on.  Then they could have showed him after this reveal the whole time without a mustache.  And we we the readers would be saying, OK.  I see why he has no mustache as the hulk, because he lost it somehow during the experiments that made him Red Hulk.
Plus it would have made it more realistic, because sometimes characters in real life shave off their mustache or cut their trademark hair from time to time.

I am just saying the fake mustache would have explained away this problem.

I think Hulk should grow long hair and a big beard.

And since he doesnt stay "Mindless Hulk" for long...the "Hulk-skin"  never had time to grow facial hair. When he was "Smart Hulk" ... Why didn't Rulk have a mustache?? Because, if you ask me, at the last second they decided to pull an Armageddon 2001. Rulk's now Marvel's Monarch as far as I'm concerned.

It makes no damn sense for it to be Ross. He hates Hulks, why would he become one??? And the big reveal just ruined it for me, because of his goddamn mustache. Even in the What-If where General Ross turns into the Hulk he keeps his facial hair. Hulks keep their facial hair when they hulk out. We've seen countless times where Bruce Banner's facial hair decisions are the same for the Hulk.

When Banner shaved his head, Hulk had a shaved head. When Banner has overgrown beards and long hair, Hulk has it too. It doesn't magically disappear.

It's become a question because Loeb wrote himself into a corner and had to get out.
