Off My Mind: Why Baz, the New Green Lantern, Will Be Different

There's a new Green Lantern coming and he's also from Earth. This guy is nothing like the past GLs we've seen.

By now you should have seen the new Green Lantern headed our way. Baz will the next Earthling who joins the ranks of the Green Lantern Corps but he's already shaping up to be different from the others.

There are 3600 sectors and some have several Lanterns to protect it. Earth resides in sector 2814 which has already produced Hal Jordan, John Stewart, Guy Gardner and Kyle Rayner. Sector 2814 might be a busy but there's another reason a new Green Lantern is needed.

No Caption Provided

There are five things that makes Baz a little different. If you've read GREEN LANTERN #12 and GREEN LANTERN ANNUAL #1, you have an idea why and how a new Lantern is needed and created. There will be spoilers below, so be sure to read those in preparation for this week's GREEN LANTERN #0.

== TEASER ==

Descent and Background

No Caption Provided

This is the first obvious difference. We're all for equality and the Lanterns of Earth have mainly been white dudes. We have had John Stewart since 1971's GREEN LANTERN #87 but with the different ethnicities on Earth, it's about time we see something different. Baz has been reported as being an Arab-American. How many Arab-American comic book characters can you name? There aren't many. While a character's race shouldn't make a difference, it'll be great to see a different viewpoint at times.

A Gun and a Mask

The members of the Green Lantern Corps have slight variations in their costumes. Those that do choose to wear a mask usually go for the domino-type masks. Baz is going a different route.

Baz also has been seen with a gun. It appears to be a regular gun as well. A Green Lantern with a gun? This definitely sets him apart from Hal, Guy, John and Kyle. Even with Stewart's military background, he's never felt the urge to carry an actual gun. He's made a green construct gun before so why doesn't Baz simply do that?

His first appearance in GREEN LANTERN #0 should answer the question about why he would have a gun and a mask.

Rings

No Caption Provided

Yes, that's meant to be plural. Where will Baz get his power ring?

In GREEN LANTERN ANNUAL #1, Hal Jordan and Sinestro are in for the fight of their lives. After the Guardians of the Universe step in and help Black Hand take on the two Lanterns, the rings start to report their vital signs are threatened. They are even reported as being deceased while they are still struggling. Because Hal's ring was created by Sinestro's, he mentioned the rings would be fused back into one.

This does happen but there is an error. Assuming these reintegrated rings make their way to Baz, there's the possibility that the rings could work a little differently. Will the ring still have the power of a single ring or could it be twice as strong since it's now made up of Sinestro and Hal's rings? (Poor Hal and Sinestro). There's also the possibility that the ring won't work as well as it should if there was an error.

Guardians' Control over Baz

No Caption Provided

The Guardians are ready to wipe out the entire Green Lantern Corps, as well as the other Corps. When they witnessed the end of Hal and Sinestro, they could have recalled the fused power rings. Because the ring is still allowed to seek out a replacement and because of the error in the ring, this is likely to lead to cause more problems for the Guardians. Unless they are allowing the ring to seek out Baz. After all, a Green Lantern wearing a full mask and carrying a gun is a departure from what has normally come from Earth. They could see this as another way to help them put an end to the Corps.

We could end up seeing Baz as another tool of the Guardians but because they are creating the Third Army and have brought out the First Lantern, there doesn't seem to be a need for another Green Lantern. That and the error in the ring will likely give Baz some independence.

Motives

GREEN LANTERN #14
GREEN LANTERN #14

Will Baz be a worthy Lantern? We (and the GL Corps) have to hope this is the case. The tattoo on his arm apparently says "Courage," so that's definitely a plus. He may look angry, wearing a full mask like a thief and carrying a gun, but even with the ring acting up a bit, we have to assume it would choose wisely.

Baz will also become a member of Steve Trevor's Justice League of America. That would seem like a good thing but as seen on the cover of GREEN LANTERN #14, he seems to be at odds with the current Justice League.

Let's not forget that image from "The Near Future" in the NEW 52 FREE COMIC BOOK DAY issue. He was also fighting Superman and the Justice League.

The cover to GL 14 could easily be a misunderstanding. With Hal no longer around, the team might be wondering who Baz is and what exactly happened to Hal. Baz might not want to willingly have a discussion with the team which would naturally lead to a typical comic book conflict.

His allegiance to the upcoming Justice League of America could paint a different story. Steve has a couple good reasons to be upset at the Justice League (and Wonder Woman) after JUSTICE LEAGUE #12. Looking at the other members of this team, some don't appear to be too stable. Does that make Baz a perfect candidate or is he just easy to manipulate because he's new. Perhaps Trevor or the government will have some way to persuade him to join.

No Caption Provided

Baz's story is about to begin. He is definitely not your average Green Lantern. We'll have to keep a close eye on him to see what he fully is about and why he was chosen to become a Lantern. We have seen many new Lanterns over the years but this gives the feeling that things definitely won't be the same.

Did we really need another Green Lantern? After a reboot and already four lanterns, a fifth lantern isn't needed.

If Baz means Hal gets to stay dead then he's suddenly become my favorite new character.

Of course it doesn't, so meh.

It will be very interesting how Baz will play a role in the New 52. Still, I think it would have been better if Johns created a female Green Lantern from Earth, but he's never let us down before. I can't wait to see how Baz will be introduced.

: From what we saw in that scene in the annual. The ring will primarily choose someone similar to sinestro so if anything this is a green lantern who will do what is necessary to bring justice.

I think the character is interesting. I think he would have been more interesting if he had just straight up been Arab as apposed to Arab American. Making all of Earth's Green Lanterns American seems like a bit of a stretch to me. But then, it seems like John's has big plans for Baz outside of just the Lantern book with Justice League as well. I guess having a non-US citizen on the Justice League of America wouldn't make a ton of sense. But then, J'onn is on the team...

Where was I going with this? Oh, yeah, Baz would be more interesting if he wasn't American, I think, but that's just me. Am I the only one who kind of likes the costume design? The mask seems a bit much, but over all I kind of dig it. I don't know, maybe I'm just racist.

Where is Sadam Yat in all of this? As far as Baz Joining the other Justice League, I'd say it's a good fit because Steve Trevor's group seems to be sort of militant or a group of super mercenaries.

Kyle never grew up with a Hispanic heritage. That's a difference many Hispancs would point out, he's a gringo. I don't feel race should matter to be honest, but I'm coming from this as a hispanic who's considered "not Spanish enough" by family and friends as well as strangers.

It is a really ignorant thing to say any publisher is "cashing in" on throwing a minority character into a book. The numbers prove time and time again that books not staring white male characters do not sell as well. So really whenever you get a new character created who is a white male, that company is cashing in on a lack of diversity. The world is filled with countless different groups, cultures, skin tones, religions, and sexualities, there is not a single good reason the spectrum of humanity should not be represented in the characters in our comics. This "tea-party" mentality that only white christian english speaking North American males deserve representation has got to go.

I didn't realize Geoff Johns was partially middle eastern, I already had confidence in him writing the character before, but I'm doubly interested in Baz knowing that.

Except the problem with John Stewart is that he has never been treated like a real lantern. Readers dont care about him because writers always give him poor and uninteresting storylines. They dont have any clue on what to do about him, so they put him like a redondant supporting character. What a shame and waste of great potential.

The only time I cared about him was during the Justice League cartoon series...which was great. But in Comics.... bah.

It's like I said to everyone I know:

I'm fine with an Arab-American or any other race being Green Lantern. However, I feel like that cover is an issue. DC, as a company, is posting a picture of an Arab-American (who honestly looks black more than anything) wearing a mask with a gun pointed directly at the audience and a glowing tattoo written is Naskh on his arm for the cover...

...and they expect this to sell copy in America...or many other places?

OUT OF THEIR MINDS!

Wouldn't it make a whole lot more sense for the character to just be Arab? Nearly all of the DCU is focused squarely on North America (USA specifically).

Since the GLs are an interplanetary police force, it's pretty silly to add a 5th Earth GL who is ALSO from North America.

I'm gonna read it first before judging it. That said the diversity angle is an interesting one, I was kinda hoping that with the reboot we would see a female GL from Earth. I'm kinda curious why Johns didn't go a step further and make Baz a woman and Arab-American, could have made for some interesting stories.

As for the design...well he looks like a thug from da hood and I cant help but wonder if DC is yet again walking into the stereotype department the same way they did with Steward.

Actually he's supposedly middle eastern.

I keep seeing people saying that his mask makes him look like a terrorist/criminal but it's exactly the same kind of thing Batman and Captain American wear, minus the little ears/wings. It seems to me that people are seeing that Baz is an Arab and then projecting their own negative views onto the character. As for the gun, it's not like he's the first hero to ever use one, Cap frequently used one, especially when Bucky took over and even Batman used guns quite frequently throughout the years.

There NEED to be more diverse characters in comics and it's sad that when a company tries to accomplish this, even in the minute changes that DC and Marvel have been making, they are met with thinly veiled racism/homophobia and accusations of cash grabbing.

Bucky used a gun as Captain America and it didn't shocked me (well, he kneecaped a few AIM henchmen, and emptied a clip in Crossbone's chest...).

Wait, Batman used a gun ? Heresy

The thing is DC said Baz would be a surprising choice for a ring (in a sollicit i think,). It is why I assume he will be somehow a bad guy (like Sinestro maybe... if you read the annual you know why I say that).

It's funny that people really can't get around the idea of a noob Green Lantern having a gun. There are so many scenarios you can come up with to explain it. 1) being him not trusting the ring. Green Lanterns aren't born with the knowledge of how the ring works. 2) He's not gonna get any tutorial (Guardians are purposely not sending out ring) so he relies on what he knows. Are people who are complaining actually reading the book?

G man missed the whole point of the GL ring Error. the ring looks for people with similar personalities with the dead green lantern. the merging of the rings and hence Sinestro and Hals personalities are conflicting creating the Error. Therefore Baz will be a mix of Hal and sinestro.

There's an article in the NY Daily News that sheds some light on Simon Baz. He's Lebanese-American (like Johns), from Dearborn, Michigan. He's more olive skinned and a Muslim (Johns is Christian and passes for white). Has a tattoo, which is taboo A laid off automotive engineer who decides to start stealing cars (So Detroit). Gets put on the terrorist watch list and then gets the ring. A flawed character.

@MisterMxy: I think a certain expression fits quite nicely here. Anyway, even if it is, it has a purpose. In the solicitation for this issue, it says that the Justice League come around asking about where Hal is. So, its not really hero vs. hero for the sake of mindless violence like Civil War, its more like...a group come looking for their friend, who has disappeared. They see this guy flying around with a green power ring and think that maybe he has something to do with Hal's disappearance.

The sarcastic mockery is absolutely foolish in these comments. It sucks that people might not even give it a chance beacuse they think DC is "trying to be edgy" with a "90s antihero"and "diversify for the sake of diversifying", none of which has even been remotely implied.

I think its weird that as a Green Lantern and a Muslim he is wearing what looks like a ski mask and also carries a gun.

Also, other sectors have more GLs because they have more races on more planets. Sector 2814 already has 4 lanterns for essentially one planet, which is a little weird. I mean, Earth is really the only planet in 2814 with sentient life, right?
