Off My Mind: Who Else Could Have Survived THE WALKING DEAD?

There has to be more survivors out there. What's the rest of the world like?

For close to one hundred issues, THE WALKING DEAD has told the story of survival in an apocalyptic world overrun by a zombie infestation. To this day, we still do not know what the cause of the zombie outbreak was. The series has followed Rick Grimes and other survivors as they struggle to cope with the threat of zombies along with trying to make it in a world that has been turned upside down.

As the story has progressed, the zombies aren't the only threat to the survivors. Searching for supplies, shelter and medical attention are often problems that can't be ignored.

No Caption Provided

Since the story has focused mainly on a small group of individuals, we haven't seen much of the rest of the world. From time to time there have been other survivors out there, usually more of a threat than the actual zombies. With the new story arc beginning in issue #93, the question of other survivors might be something that's addressed. The question that we face is what happened to the rest of the world during the zombie outbreak? Be aware that there may be some minor spoilers if you're not completely caught up with the series.

== TEASER ==

The story began with Rick Grimes. As the police officer in a small town, he missed out on the action when the zombie infestation began. In a coma from being shot, he woke up weeks later to find all hell had broken loose. Rick's survival instincts immediately kicked in and he even managed to reunite himself with his wife and son, who had joined up with a small band of survivors.

As they made their way to simply survive, they would discover others that hadn't been infected or turned into zombies. While there has been an enormous number of zombies seen, very few human survivors have shown up. The biggest group of survivors was when they came across the Governor and the city that had fallen under his control. This was a sign that more than a few other people were still alive in the world. Later a community of people was also discovered. The number wasn't enough to fill a small city but it was still more than the handful Rick and the others came across.

No Caption Provided

Recently a man has made his way to the community that has become their haven. This survivor claimed to be part of a network of communities that had a system of trading and communication in place. Claiming to have 200 people in his community, this could be the beginning of a new chapter in their world.

Rick is skeptical, of course. How could he so easily trust anyone? He doesn't know if the man is telling the truth, if there is a larger community and what their true intentions are. The real focus should be on the existence of other communities.

No Caption Provided

Rick and the others have survived incredible and often impossible odds. This is a greater feat when you look at some of the individuals in his group and who they were before. No one would think to be prepared for a zombie outbreak. Yet these individuals have survived extreme odds by banding together.

When considering the rest of the world, there would definitely be others that would be more prepared for these dire times. A zombie outbreak would be incredibly unexpected but the possibility that some people got word before being overrun means they could have had more time to prepare. If they or anyone they knew had any military or survival skills, that would make their survival even greater. As a police officer, Rick may have had some survival training but there's no way he would be the most prepared person left in the world.

No Caption Provided

The idea of looking into the rest of the world would drastically change the vibe of the series. But from their perspective, it's something that would be thought of frequently. Even in their current community, they know supplies will soon run out. There's even been talk of trying to replenish their ammunition supply. They keep going out further and further to scavenge for food but eventually it will take them too far. They need more supplies and they need to find more people.

Another thought would be what is their fate in this world? Is this how they will live the rest of their days? What about repopulating the world? The idea of trying to raise a baby in this world is almost insane but for the survival of the human race it needs to be considered. What about trying to figure out what caused the outbreak and if there is a cure to end it?

The survivors need to find out what's out there. We've only seen a tiny portion of the world. There are other areas in the country that could have a better grasp on dealing with the zombies. There's also the question of what other countries are like.

Fans of THE WALKING DEAD might not want the answers to some of these questions. For the characters, they can't be and shouldn't be avoided.

You sound like early Andrea.

This story breaks the mold of the zombie genre. Its a prolonged detailed look at what they do after the zombie apocalypse movie.

Anyone could survive, its something of a common theme with zombie stories. When there's a epidemic there will always be survivors, maybe not at the numbers we expect. But there's always. It'd be something if Kirkman brings any survivors from main casts's past.

Since Kirkman's zombies are much easier to handle under constant freezing-point, I would say Russia and Scandinavian nations would most likely have a fair amount of survivors. Same goes for every remote and isolated region with the opportunity of agriculture and stock-raising, maybe fishing (plateaus, islands, coves, etc.)

I agree with this sentiment. You have forgotten that the northern states get cold as well. In Winnipeg, Manitoba, it often drops to -40 degrees Celsius in January/February.

However, the Summers are nice and that's when the zombies will be frisky. Even in the poles, the sun still rears it's head. Australia might survive though. Australia always survives.

We've learned to be resilient, pretty much every native thing in our country is trying to kill us ;)

Yup. I was referring to the book, On The Beach. I read it when I attended school in Oz.

The Kirk-man will always have something prepared.

I personally believe the next big group for them to run into will be led by the alive Dividson.

OR...

The ruturn of a few Woodbury survivers led by Lilly, the woman who killed both the Governer and Lori. They would want to be allies and join them, but, Rick will have to choose to toughen his own group with numbers, or be unable to join with them due to past mistakes.

thatd be awesome. rick having to come to terms with his wifes killer, or worse having a relationship with her then finding out, being that his relationships so far have ended bloody and disastrous. def davidson. unless their sure he's dead.

id dig a fat new load of characters. like six steady new character for a minimum of a 5 issues lifespan each. and also some divine cause would be an insane twist but thats unlikely, either way i'd like to see an answer not involving bio-chem warfare and some proactive move on the major cities possibly D.C. or N.Y....def need to take a trip to N.Y., maybe find Obama

It's sad but true that assholes will survive more often then good people because they run and are self-helping.

It's most likely a virus similar as the T-virus from the Resident Evil games. Whatever caused the virus could be either be a lab accident. Or it could be a medical cure for diseases or cancers that has gone horribly wrong.

Coming from the perspective of a tv show, Jericho, on CBS awhile back . . . spoilers if you had wanted to see it, . . . I liked the show when I the viewer was just as isolated and unable to know the full extent of what had transpired in the world. Yes the characters and I wanted answers and speculations ran wild, but it was seeing how this small but closeknit town pulled together/apart that fascinated me. If you're invested in the characters and the story, you don't want it to go too fast or expand out too far for fear of lost of focus, of becoming something else . . . but . . . Logically, if you can find the means to communicate, to find out what's happened, and network, you'll either find answers to return to the status quo or face the world with no return. Sometimes answers can kill a tone and desire . . if not handled correctly or without a smart delivery. Does this book lend itself to finding answers to the big questions. Do you run into that scientist or the military guy with the answers or clues down a rabbit hole? Is 200, 2000 survivors a bad thing when you're use to between 5 to 8. Depends on the writer, depends on the reader?

It would be a REALLY kick in the ASS if Rick Grimes, wakes up... It was all a dreams / nightmare he had while in a coma from the bullet that hit him away back in the first issue. LOL (None of this ever happened it was all a dream while in his coma)

Not necessarily, the rest of the world might know the cause of the outbreak and feel sending help would only endanger their people (most likely troops), for example.

I love this series, I read up to issue 26 until I became.. moneyless :p

Although I've been keeping up with what's hapening it sounds only better and better.

One thing though; when Glenn dies.. I hope he gets a death deserving of him.. like saving Maggie, or something good for him.

And a prediction.. if they decide to focus the story on other people, I think it will be with Rick dying and the story will focus on Carl's life without him and go from there. Carl meets new people tries to survive, though he's becoming dark and cold. I think it would work though.

If there are large community alive out there I would imagine they would be much the same as the stadium community in Key of Z. I love how Kirkman keeps you in the dark about the fate of the rest of the world or the cause of the out brake, it keep's the story's more grounded, much like classic George Romero

I could imagine little filler chapters focusing on other people in the world of the Walking Dead. (kinda like DMZ did from time to time)

Want to jump in the walking dead but i have one question :

Will this be "50% zombie and 50%humain story" or "5% zombie, 5%humain and 90% some boring discussion about the value of one life and psy subject" ?

For me your latter part is not applicable to this series at all, but i wouldn't go as far as 50% zombie and 50% human either. Sometimes a few issues go by before seeing a zombie let alone an attack.

Even though the story slows down somewhat from time to time i still find it interesting, at the moment they've made contact with a member of possibly a new group of survivers (i don't consider this a spoiler since it's been mentioned in the article itself) and this situation is dealt with in an unusual manner.

Rick (the main character) imo has only two lives he considers of any value, his and that of his son. Everybody that comes between him and keeping those lives safe, either intentionally or not, are considered a threat and dealt with. This makes him a major asshole imo. Then again i would be too in his situation.

I don't know, I think I'm mixed on the subject of "what's going on in the world" for this ongoing. I think part of the entire appeal of this story so far has been that the focus isn't on the zombies but rather on the personal interactions between the stories main characters following a zombie apocalypse. By starting to broaden the scope I think Kirkman runs the risk of starting to include elements tot eh story that might be irrelevant. After all its nice seeing the struggles Team Grimes has to deal with in midst of this post-apocalyptic world. By looking into the rest of the world, Walking Dead runs the risk of turning into another 28 Days Later or other run of the mill zombie story. Then again it might be a new direction that could continue the story's amazing intrigue. I'm open to the idea regardless. I say bring on this new arc and see where it leads. This ongoing's been solid so far and still is just as good at issue #93 as it was at #1. New directions are exciting. Darn the new TP needs to come out already so I can be catching up. As such I'm 3 issues behind! Gahhhhhh...

I'm sure we will see other survivers down the road, if only for the fact they need to add fresh blood to the group, because Kirkman keeps killing characters. (which i love by the way)

I would love to see how the rest of the world is doing, but we allready know that there won't be any spin-offs so there's litlle chance of that happening. Altough i think it's safe to say that it's happening all over the world, because if it was only the USA i'm sure other country's would come with aid.

I do wish however that Rick and the gang had more of a mission than just "survive" like he had when he was looking for his family. I think it would be far more interesting if they were forced on the road again and had to go to california for instance. This way you would see how big the impact was on society and on america. (then again that might be a bit "cliché" since every zombie film or story has this)

I think by now finding lone survivers might be near impossible, to survive a zombie apocolypse you need to be with more people and you need to get organised, so my guess is Grimes and company will only meet other pockets of survivers from now on and so this new guy might be telling the truth. Then again the only person that really knows is Mr Kirkman himself.
