Off My Mind: When Your Favorite Comic Character Gets "Ruined"

Comic book fans can be passionate over characters they love and will get vocal when big changes are made.

Comic books are filled with many great characters. It's these characters that we grow to love that keeps us coming back month after month. We grow an attachment to them and want to see the latest adventures and battles they will get into.

With many characters having existed for decades, every once in a while changes are made to the character. It can be a natural evolution as not everyone wants the same old stories over and over again. This prevents the characters from becoming stale and gives the stories a sense of being fresh.

Was this Batman or an excuse for more action figures?
Was this Batman or an excuse for more action figures?

Once in a while characters go through major transformations. A publisher or creator may decide to shake things up and big adjustments are made to the groundwork that makes the character who they are. This sometimes results in excitement but more often, comic fans become angry and threaten to never read comics again. What can comic fans do when their favorite characters are changed in drastic ways?

Recently we've been hearing rumblings over the changes coming for Spider-Man. The fifty year series, THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN is coming to an end with issue #700. Naturally it will be replaced by a new series, SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN, but writer, Dan Slott, has already started the groundwork in giving us a new Spider-Man unlike the one we're used to.

With the release of AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #698, we may have been given a glimpse of what we can expect in the new series. A confrontation between Spider-Man and Doc Ock promises huge changes. With the issue, comments such as "Marvel has ruined my childhood" have appeared. Is this the end of Spider-Man as we know him?

Comic book logic says, "No."

Many times, there is an attempt to completely redefine a character. In the 90s, Superman's powers and looks were completely changed. Superman gained electrically powers no longer sported the familiar red, blue and yellow costume. He didn't even have a cape. I cannot imagine hardcore Superman fans casually accepting this change. We did see Superman split into a blue and red version before returning back to his normal appearance and power levels.

Killing off a character is another way 'big changes' can be made.' When characters such as Batman, Captain America or Superman have been killed off in epic stories, they always 'got better.' Writers can always come up with a way to resurrect the characters or have had a plan from the beginning to allow the characters to cheat death. When it comes to comic book deaths, most readers realize it's only a after of time until the character makes their comeback.

Sometimes characters quit or leave their costumed identity behind. Characters such as Captain America, Wonder Woman, Batman, Spider-Man, Thor, Iron Man and others have all given up their superhero identities for one reason or another. In most cases, they temporarily took on another identity but, as excepted, they returned to their familiar costumes after a period of time.

What it all comes down to is when characters go through humongous changes, things usually return to the status quo after some time.

Comic fans have a right to be upset but they have to try to have some faith in the creators and publishers. When Dan Slott apparently killed off one of my favorite villains, the Hobgoblin, I was not happy but was enthralled in the story and wanted to see where it would go. A small part of me refused to believe the character could so easily be killed (even if he was decapitated) and after a brief period, my guy was proven correct as the original returned with a vengeance.

No Caption Provided

The return 'normal' also reflects on the status of the character in the industry. Spider-Man has grown extra arms, changed costumes, been married and even publicly revealed his identity. All of these events were resolved and Spidey ended up pretty much the same as before. With SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN, there's no telling what the full changes are we'll be seeing or how long they will last but it just makes sense that Peter Parker will manage to overcome his battle and everything will return to what it was.

We can't have the same old stories all the time. Every once in a while, a well executed shake up can result in exciting stories. Comic fans just have to be patient (although Barry Allen fans had to wait twenty-three years for his return from the dead). If something happens to your favorite character, chances are, someday somehow, it will all get better.

The industry knows what works and what doesn't. They may wish to take a risk once in a while and that's a good thing. They are capable of learning from mistakes. We just have to have faith and patience if the decision is made to try to shake things up with our favorite characters. Chances are it will pay off with the result being an interesting story. If not...then we always have our back issues and trade paperbacks to curl up to as we cry ourselves to sleep.

Honestly, I think that when it comes to comicbook characters, changes and tweets are necessary in order for the character to continue to survive time and for those certain characters that are not as old as the icons we know, not get thrown in the trash because the character was too problematic to fix.

Take Harley Quinn, for example.

Yeah, her costume was fine and her personality was A-OK and her origin was great. However, the character's co-dependency, the glamorization and romanticization of the truly brutal and cold bond between Joker and Harley, and the character's lack of development was taking a toll on the character.

While most hardcore fans of the character say that there was nothing wrong with the core of her character, I'd have to say otherwise. While they say the abuse is okay because Harley likes it and that there was plenty of development of Harley with the Joker, here's the problem. Harley's character can be very triggering for those that have experienced DV in their lives and the almost constant cycle of Harley happily going back to her "abuser" as the resolution of the character sends the wrong message to those young fans of hers or those that don't get how DV or abuse works. It also sends the message that she is truly nothing without the Joker and that she only exists to be an extension of him.

I don't know about you but with a character like her, I'd want someone to tackle those problems of the character and not be afraid to piss off the fanbase that seems totally intolerant to any change and seem almost blind to the problems that character has.

That's my two cents concerning big changes or tweets to a comicbook character.

@alex6166: yeah, i can see what you mean for Spider-man. I still read Spidey and he's my super hero but I will say this: He has little to fight for anymore. It always went with the theme "with great power comes great responsibility" but he don't have those same responsibility. Sure, he's saving lives, but is he doing it for them or himself? He does want glory from t he people and these days that's all he seems to worry about, with him joining teams and such for his image. Jameson was right in a way, he's become a glory hound. The same glory hound that wrestled Crusher Hogan for the spotlight. It used to be for the people.

The only characters that have become ruined are Ghost Rider and Punisher, which were the only characters I thought were worth a damn in Marvel as a kid. Spawn, too, but such a miserable waste of potential that was from the get go so it really doesn't count.

Slight edit: Okay, so Wolverine is bit of a waste, but there really wasn't much to go on besides the mystery. That very may be the point now.

Thats all well and good for A-list chatacters but what about B and C listers? Those guys get killed/changed/replaced willy nilly and never go back

This! They kill off/dramatically change/replace A-list characters but either it was just a cheap gimmick before going back to the status quo or they decide to stick with it for a while even if it s*cks. Meanwhile, some writers destroy B or C-listers, ruin all the things that made them interesting and then move on, leaving all the fans desperately waiting for a good writer able to fix this mess, which could take years or will probably never happen...

That's frustrating and disappointing but Marvel and DC will probably never learn from their mistakes. Having faith in them is pretty much pointless at this point and if it wasn't for a couple of great writers and artists working for them the Big Two would be dead to me now.

this is an interesting point, but what happen when the ruination of the character is based on the fact that its Returning to a previous Status Quo?

or the return of Barbara Gordon from Oracle to batgirl or the changes on characters like Green Arrow who first gets married, then he loses everything and then he gets back to 0 in the reboot

Which has been great. Batgirl has never gotten more interesting.

Because making her the poster child of a Mental illness like PTSD to put her whine and sob every 2 pages makes her SOOOOOOOOOOOOO much interesting

No one is ruining your childhood. You had that when you were a kid and your grown up now. The new spider-man is Someone Else's childhood. You can choose to prefer the Spider-man you grew up with. No one is ruining your childhood unless they send a terminator back in time to destroy your comics.

This is also a good point.

I think it's a necessary part of the medium. Things have to stray from their core once in a while so you can have the joyous 'return' to the original concept. It happens in all pulp fiction that lasts. You have to have Phantom 4000 so you can realize how great the original Phantom is. I think it's healthy. The greater concern is when one of your favourites is a second tier character, say something like Hawk And Dove, because when they get changed, they tend to stay that way.

Really good point.

The second I hear "They ruined the character," or any variation I immediately think that this is a person is too immature to speak with. It really is that simple. People want to keep their character the same and get new stories. Change is hard and you don't control the character. Let go and see where it goes. No I don't always like where a story goes, but I'm always quite surprised the good that will eventually come from these stories.

I hate the whole "ruined my childhood" thing that people love to copy/paste into comment sections. It's crap, the changes made are in the present. Nobody jumped back in time and told innocent child you that oneday your beloved character will be killed/cloned/freaky fridayed/made into a film that you don't approve of.

Things happen, story's and characters change, for better or for worse, but in reality the memories you had are still the same ones that you always had. And you can keep them, they haven't been wiped from your minds!

Seconded!

Marvel in particular doesn't appear to value the characters with unrealized potential. If you surround classic A-listers with B/C list characters then there isn't any need for pointlessly extravagant changes. Often times, less popular characters bring out more interesting facets in the bigger, cash cowesque iconic characters. It's all about the dynamic. We know already how Iron Man, Captain America, Wolverine, and Hulk will react to one another, it's boring. But throw in a few wildcards and it suddenly is more than just a superhero playgroup.

They're a little better with this over at DC. Gail Simone's series often have characters that aren't as well known. The Huntress wasn't quite popular when she was introduced to Bird of Prey but came into the fold famously along with quite a few others, Simone's Secret Six lineup was a lot of second-strings that turned out to be really good too.

I like it when a ton of B/C listers run into an A-lister. In Secret Six they face off against Wonder Woman and it's really interesting to see her as the enemy.

It’s maddening to know all that stuff the character goes though can be brushed away. Sometime the status que is the problem. Seeing the character finally rise but then drop due to make everything back to normal. That part of their story should have ended but no your tale was cut short. Rethinking if you feel so angry about what happen the mistake you shouldn’t try to forget, learn what are the errors of it. See if it is possible to correct it. If the character you know should be better than that try to find a way to fix it to make it right. Show how it should it been done instead of just whining.

perhaps a break is needed from seeing your character is ruined. Some time should past and you should try something different than decide on what to do.

Spider-Man isn't being ruined by Dan Slott and this pointless/endless renumbering by Marvel, rather it's just another nail in an already over-nailed coffin. The ruining of Spider-Man started with Chapter One. Much like when there wasn't anything wrong with Batman when Crisis happened, there wasn't anything wrong with Spider-Man when Heroes Return happened. However, rather than having someone write a classic story of Peter just starting out in ASM proper, then continuing on with the series uninterrupted the way DC did with Year One, Marvel chose to start swinging at outside fastballs again, and again, and again, and again, and so on, etc. Chapter One? Crap. Howard Mackie? Crap. Doom crying about 9/11? Crap. Peter getting his eye ripped out? Crap. Peter dying? Crap. Aunt May alive and doting on a down-on-his-luck Peter like it's 1963? Crap. Peter as an Avenger and unmasking? Ultra-crap. Multiple issues of ASM in one month? Crap crap crap. Mark Waid on Spider-Man? Good! Dan Slott rehashing stories from the late 70's/early 80's/mid 90's thinking today's readers won't notice? CRAP! The only thing good about the Spider-Verse since 1999 was Spider-Girl and I DON'T mean Areana or whatever her name was.

So, it wasn't and hasn't been just ONE thing, it's been EVERYTHING since and including Chapter One. Thanks Marvel. Spider-Man? RUINED!!!

I guess it depends on the character, characters like Spider-Man will always snap back to status quo (sooner or later-still waiting on the return to pre-OMD). Others will absolutely never change back. Toxin, Nova, and Moon Knight seem like perfect examples of characters who got ruined and will never change back. If Bendis ever leaves MK alone maybe one day he'll change back, but I won't hold my breath over that one. But new Nova will probably replace Rich permanently, and Remender destroyed everything good about Toxin so that's not getting fixed.

I feel like this is the state of the whole comic industry. I am not happy with the direction most things have gone in the mainstream over the last year. This is why I have stopped buying currents other than TMNT. I now am just collecting back issues and random small events from time to time.

Changes to particular characters that are good and work usually stay and remain with the character, some changes might be temporary an example of this is in Knightfall when Batmans back was broken and so Azrael took up the mantle it was a temporary change and made sense to the storyline and it was a better storyline as a result of that change.

Bucky Barnes as Captain America
Bucky Barnes as Captain America

Change is a necessary part of the medium. Stories get tired, characters get stale. Sometimes, it's good to have such a change. I was personally quite horrified when Marvel killed off Captain America a while back yet I have to admit that Bucky Barnes struggling to fit himself into the role was a much more interesting book.

Spider-Man in Black
Spider-Man in Black

Sometimes they work, sometimes they don't. Sometimes I hate the direction that the book is taking, but usually things revert back. Like when Spider-Man changed his outfit in the Secret Wars to all black. I think a lot of people were taken aback at the shucking of the red and blue suit, but the black suit or the design lasted quite a while and has even made some resurgences here and there.

That being said, I have noticed that Marvel tends to be open to experimenting than DC which seems to be a bit more traditional. Of course, when DC changes things--they really change things like their recent revision of their entire line of comics. I'm not that big a fan of some of those changes--some of the new costumes look kinda stupid in my opinion.

I'm fine with change... as long as it's explained. Moon Knight is my favourite character, and even though I thought Bendis' latest story was stupid, I still read it. Why? Because I was hoping things would be explained... but they never were. Why was he suddenly seeing Avengers in his head? Why did he leave his recently-miscarrying girlfriend? And his best friend? Why was Khonshu no longer talking to him? None of this was explained at all, which bothered me more than the changes themselves.

Change is good as long as the story is good. One reason there was so much outrage over OMD wasn't just that they broke up Peter and MJ, but that the story was crap. Mephisto casts a spell and we're just supposed to pretend the last 20 years didn't happen (wink, wink). Lazy bastards.

Sometims in comics change is good and necessary. Example so far I am liking the harder Cyclops seems to be portraying but it remains to be seen how far this will go and how much the character will change. Now sometimes change can be taken too far line the Spider-Man clone saga that was later down played and the aftermath of the death of Superman. Sometimes the creative people on a title try to be too cute with their work or are too deeply involved with their work to take a step back to guage potential fan backlash. Spidy fans have been the victim of this more than once and the fear a drastic change will be coming that the fans will hate.

In regards to this military Venom at first I thought the idea of a military soldier with the symbiote to be very interesting but honestly,Marvel killed my favorite child hood villain by making him walk around with guns all the time and barely be what he should be Venom, a twisted image of spiderman at his core who was extremely dangerous, now he is just an armored spiderman running around shooting people.....The younger generations don't necessarily understand, that there is NO Venom without Brock, even Brock as toxin is stupid,it was a cool concept but the way it was executed to me was dumb,Eddie Brock used to force the Venom symbiote to his will all the time and one would expect the Veteran symbiote host to be able to easily do this to the naive Toxin symbiote and be even more of a threat than venom was but nooooooo, Toxin gets floored by an armored spiderman......Only Carnage is the last of the Mohicans,I wonder how long before someone gets the carnage symbiote and turns it into a fairy and shove this garbage about an interesting change down our throats. MARVEL bring Venom as Brock back, make Eddie Spidermans most dangerous villain again and please do the same with the green goblin, he is another character that I actually miss. man the more I think about it the more frustrated I get.

I really hated Superman Blue/Red (90's one, not the Silver Age one)... But looking back, I think it deserves a place in Superman history as a milestone. It showed the balls of its creators and gave us the most unique rendition of Superman.

Its true, the changes that do happen tend to revert back to the way things were for them. The biggest disappointment for me for instance is just as you mentioned it here...the Superman Red/Superman Blue days. I still cannot comprehend DC's boldness in turning the Man of Steel into a Man of Magnetism and then rehash an old "what if" story essentially from the 60s. But yes, the truth of the matter was Superman got back to the way he was and all was well once again. It happens time and again because we as consumers int he end WANT that to happen. Now if this was the case for a creator owned character it wouldn't be so much an issue, but in case of big characters int he Big Two, I do believe us comic readers have discretion of how we want our comic characters portrayed in print and picture.

My favorite characters have gone through many changes some good some bad

Hawkeye has died quite a few times, and has had some bad gimmicks and costumes "Goliath, Ronin, that skirt..." He is also a character that some writers simply do not know how to handle.

Storm is a character that shines under some writers and can be completely ruined by another. Now that Claremont is long gone she is a character that I always go into a new writer cautiously because she is so often poorly handled.

She Hulk- This lady had her own title and was then made the side kick of another hulking after we had two red ones running around. At least she is going to appear in a team.

Captain America is a character that can be written rather generic, but at least most writers "get" him. Marvel really hurt him in AVX, but other then Hawkeye hurting Emma Frost and Storm and Black Panther's divorce I ignore everything that happened in that event.

Wonder Woman- Oh Diana you are a character I keep exploring and am constantly baffled by the different takes writers have of you. I swear it is like you are three women living in a single body. The warrior, The peace keeper, The woman. Alot writers just can't blend these aspects so they just focus on one and it hurts her character. Her new title kicks ass though.

What about Raven? She got messed up bad by Geoff John and would probably go through the same by Scott Lobdell.

I dont think the Azrel Batman, the twin electric supermans or Artemis WW really mattered one way or another because they didnt last long enough. However, having multiple versions of the Flash, earth GLs, & the Justice Society Golden age characters is why some of them never got to the high profile level of an Aquaman. Because you dont know who they really are. When I say to my friend Hourman, & he's like who is that, & I'm like well the first of three... & doesnt even care any more.

No one will ever even know that Artemis was the red headed WW, but the Huntress will never get any recognition because no one will ever now which one you are talking about

Easy way to avoid this is to not read mainstream marvel/DC books. Problem solved.

this is an interesting point, but what happen when the ruination of the character is based on the fact that its Returning to a previous Status Quo?

or the return of Barbara Gordon from Oracle to batgirl or the changes on characters like Green Arrow who first gets married, then he loses everything and then he gets back to 0 in the reboot

Which has been great. Batgirl has never gotten more interesting.

Because making her the poster child of a Mental illness like PTSD to put her whine and sob every 2 pages makes her SOOOOOOOOOOOOO much interesting

i guess having mental illness does make a character less interesting. Like Joker, Ventriloquist and Twoface. I guess thats why people dont like them.

I do enjoy changes in comic books as long as the changes are well-written and are not forced out.  It's just lately, some of the changes that Marvel has been doing for their characters seem forced rather than developed and it makes it harder for me to take the stories seriously if the changes are too forced.

I guess the only thing I'm worried about whenever changes are being made to the comics is seeing how long the changes last.  If there are changes that help develop the characters, then I would want the changes to last for awhile to see how they can take the story in the long run with the changes to the character's personalities or lives.

You forgot Wonder Woman. Since the 600# she's dead to me, alternatively a pubescent adolescent, a slut, a seemingly lesbian (being for real isn't a problem, being one just to attract a kind of reader on purpose is something else), the daughter of the king of assholes...everything but her, just to bring more readers, ok it's a bussiness thanks we've the previous 599 issues, even when she lost everything and was with i ching whe was less miserable.
