Off My Mind: When Bruce Returns, Why Not Have Two Batmans?

Or should I say Batmen?

No Caption Provided
When Bruce Wayne was "killed" by Darkseid at the end of Final Crisis, we all knew he'd be back, especially since it ended by showing Bruce drawing bat symbols in a cave. Dick Grayson has been filling in as Batman and might just be getting the hang of it. He was extremely reluctant at first because by becoming Batman, he was acknowledging Bruce's death. The question has come up, when Bruce returns, what happens to Dick?

I've thought about this for a while. My first thoughts were he can't go back to being Nightwing since Christopher Kent was using that name. Perhaps that will change. I just wonder if Dick would want to go back to being Nightwing. I know he didn't really want to be Batman but now that he has and has been accepted as Batman, it would be a step backwards for him. He's even on the Justice League now as Batman.

Does Bruce's return mean Dick is done being Batman? One thought I had was perhaps it would be similar to what Steve Rogers did when he returned. Rather than reclaim the Captain America role, he insisted that Bucky keep it and we've seen the images of Steve running around in a new costume. Maybe Bruce will want to allow Dick to remain as Batman and he might find a new role for himself. We don't know what his journey through time will do to him. Maybe he won't be able to become Batman once again. I doubt that. There's another solution.

I think the best resolution would be to have both men remain Batman. Why can't there be more than one? Bruce's promise to his parents was to cleanse Gotham of its evil. He's welcomed the help of others and has had several sidekicks. Why not expand the mission of Batman and have there be more than one? Bruce has always tried playing on the fact that villains are a "cowardly lot." Imagine how freaked out they'd be if Batman was making appearances at different places at the same time. Batman used to be more about being an urban myth or a dark force of justice in the night. Too much lately Batman has been seen as just a man in a costume fighting crime. I think "Batman" needs to go back and use the element of fear in order to defeat the criminals.

There's also the fact that Batman often travels the world fighting evil in the Justice League. If he's sworn to protecting Gotham City, who is watching over when he's sitting around the Justice League Watchtower? Sure he might have some link or be listening in on the police radio but you can't honestly believe that not a single crime is occurring when he's not in Gotham. And despite there being a bunch of other costumed crimefighters in the city, I can't see him placing total trust in their ability to protect every single innocent life in his city.

I recall a story in Supergirl #27 where she met the team of Batmen from 400 years in the future. There was a connection to Bruce in that team. And of course there's the Batmen of All Nations as well. Why can't there be more than one Batman? To me, this seems the best solution for his battle against evil.

Good Dan at DC made several hints to this in an interview with Newsarama. He said that there would definitely be room for Dick after Bruce returns.

A few weeks a go I commented that much like how Tim has become an alternate version of Robin (Red Robin) Dick should become an alternate version of Batman (just make sure it's something original and not NightBat).

I never considered the idea that Bruce would allow Dick to remain Batman while he does something else. I doubt it'll happen.

One Batman to look after Gotham, one Batman to take care of Worldly/JLA affairs. The more I think about it, the more I like it.

I like the idea of multiple Batmen (Batmans?). However I don't think the idea works when it comes to villains that oppose Bruce Wayne's personal identity as the Batman (Joker for example). I think if there were to be two Batmen they would have to have their separate villains and that in any team-ups one would have to wear an alternate costumes. Bruce Wayne as Robin? That would be both hilarious and awesome. What I'm getting at is that the appearance of there only being one Batman must be maintained. I wouldn't want every villain asking "so which Batman are you?" every time Bruce or Dick busts a crime scene. After all, the mythos of Batman in the eyes of criminals has always been one of the single unstoppable bat in the night. For there to be two bats in their eyes I think would diminish the effect of that mythos he's constructed over his tenure as Batman. But yes, two Batmen would be totally bangin.

LOL.
At C2E2 someone asked if Dick would become Nightwing when Bruce returned. DC executive (forgot name) replied, "Youre assuming that Bruce is going to want to be batman when he returns."
So im going with that. Im reading his return assuming that Bruce wont want to be Batman.

Bruce should keep himself  busy with the Outsiders for a while or train some new heroes and focus on his business and let Dick be Batman. Maybe he could be sidekick for a while and just call himself  The Dark Knight.

Yes Two Batmen are fine. I don't want bruce to make a new identity like Steve Rogers did. Besides, Bruce can have gotham and Dick can have Bludhaven. I think that Bruce will be working solo, because Damian might want to stay with Dick Grayson. I think Chris Kent should stay nightwing, because that is like "I will take my identity back now." Who would Chris kent become, if Dick grayson got the nightwing mantle back? Besides Dick Grayson has outgrown the Nightwing mantle, just like Tim has outgrown being Robin. Hopefully, Jason will come back to the Batman family and finally become a good guy again.

Since that universe may be revisited I think there may be two Batmen for a while.

I think by having more than one Batman you are over exposing the character. Besides Batman already has soooooo many titles in the DC universe. Batman, Detective comics, Batman and Robin etc. Would you have Dick in one title book and have Bruce in another? This will confuse the reader in a huge manner and sales will suffer. For instance look at Deadpool, you can't turn around without having Deadpool in your face. Now don't get me wrong I like the character, but I hear through the grape vine that he is being way over exposed much like Wolverine in the 90's and somewhat now. I think having two Batmen would really kill the character as a character. Either Bruce will retain the title of the batman or have him be portrayed behind the scenes much like the Oracle. Let's face it no matter what happens Batman will always be Bruce Wayne and Captain America will always be Steve Rodgers, NUFF SAID.

@AmazingSpiderMike: Exactly. A little off topic but the Captain America page here is for Steve Rogers. Period. The Batman page here is for Bruce Wayne. I don't care who is calling themselves what. Bucky and Dick have their own page. Steve and Bruce don't need their own because they already have one.

As far as the overexposing thing, I would like them to keep the current Bat-books and just have Bruce and Dick in them. I don't want to see more Batman books if they did decide to go this route (which I don't think they would).

I think it's time for something new. I like the idea of Dick as Batman and I think he deserves it. If Bruce comes back, it's time to retire and perhaps act from the Batcave helping Dick strategically,
as in "Batman Beyond".  And why not? Finally living his life as Bruce Wayne, who also deserves it.

I've both hated and liked Grayson as Batman.  Just takes time getting used to the idea.   He isn't bad as Batman, but he seems to lack the machismo for the role when compared to Bruce Wayne.  Then again, I don't think anyone can compare to Wayne in that department.

I don't think it's a bad idea having two people as Batman.  Maybe even more.  Why?  It'd really screw with criminals and that's what Batman is all about.  Intimidating the bad guys.

Naturally I think DC will pull a "Battle of the Batmen" or "Batman VS. Batman", "Robin VS. (Red) Robin" soon.

Nightwing is my most FAVORITE comic character out of Marvel and DC.  I REALLlY, and I  mean REALLY want Dick back as Nightwing!!!!  He was the next best choice to cover for Bruce, but now that Bruce is back, it's time for Bludhaven's knight to be back in action.

I don't want to see Dick doing anything else.

What if Dick Grayson fought side-by-side with Batman once again as Robin? Damian Wayne will be killed off in Morrison's work in Batman and Robin and all will be right with the world...

it would make him more of a mystery again being in two places at once, if bruce is severily injured and the attacker runs into dick later and he's fine.
It would work after all their is three flashes and five green lanterns on earth

People forget Batman took a break a little while back and Dick was Batman for short time.  It was Bruce saying that he trusted Dick to be Batman after making the mistake of having Azrael become Batman, but it was test.  It also implied that Dick would sooner or later take up the mantle.  If it was done right I don't think people would have cared if Dick became Batman with Bruce as sideline type of character.  That's not gonna happen now because it's to similar to Steve Rodgers coming back and having Bucky stay Cap.  It would be like DC is ripping off Marvel, but it could have worked. Still might.  I could see Bruce becoming a trainer for characters.

I like Dick......wait that doesn't sound right. I like Richard Grayson to resume his role as Nightwing. Nightwing was a concept that was and extension of Robin, Batman and Superman. Dick was never Bruce and really shouldn't have to fill that role with Bruce Wayne back.

I don't mind it as long as it doesn't last too long.I remember in some Supergirl issues she was somehow sent into the future or something and there were Batmen,I believe 3 of them, but I don't think it was anyone we know of now.Anyway again for a short time it is ok but then again I don't know if there are two I think it would be easier for criminals to compare them and realize that one of the Batmen isn't the original and therefore inferior...Dick doesn't look the same or move the same or think the same but well now I'm confused.

More than one Batman? Sorry but that doesn't sound right to me. Bruce Wayne is Batman. But that doesn't mean I don't care about Dick Grayson, as long as DC puts him in a good role.

They have more than one Flash, Why not more than one Batman? I actually said this in the forums. I love Dick as Nightwing but I also think he could be cool as Batman too. Two Robins too? Or is Damian enough? Maybe we can see someone new as Robin. There are so many sidekicks now. Catwoman has Catgirl. Batwoman gets Flamebird. Batman and Robin. Plus Red Robin and Batgirl are out there, along with Azrael.

Also, I think Bruce's first business is dealing with Hush.

THey already stated Dick will Staty on the JLA (as Batman) for atleast two years worth of stories and ifand when he does stop being Batman, he will no take a step back and go back to being nightwing; That he will most likely create another new persona out of his experiences and what he has learned as portraying Batman. Expect to see him in a new costume after he is no longer Batman

nah.I dont think Bruce should take back the cowl for a while. Like another year or 2. Dick is a good batman, and i would love to see bruce wayne actually be bruce wayne for more than 2 pages.
Thats what i want. Bruce being bruce. Just like how we have Barbara being  Barbara. we have seen these characters acting their hero roles for years. Give Dick his full run. You know DC's gonna kill him anyway. Let him have hs run before he's done, and lets finally see bruce get over being so damn broody about everything. let him be happy until Dick dies.

Because two of the same hero is stupid. It's stupid with Flash, it's even kinda stupid with Green Lantern despite him being apart of a corp. You need a dominant personality in super hero comics. We need to root for the star. With Bruce back, Grayson's out of the top spot. He's gonna have to settle for wing man.

Theatricality and deception are powerful allies. Two Bats and two Robins (Bruce and Tim, Dick and Damian, for balance) could do far more damage. and it would help with preserving secret identities. It'd piss the Riddler off, seeing Bruce at some function while Dick is busting heads on the other side of town.
