Off My Mind: What's Next for 'The Avengers'?

They've fought and won their first major battle. What possible event will they face together next?

The Avengers has finally opened in the United States this past weekend. Hopefully everyone has had a chance to see the characters we've been watching in separate movies come together to defeat the enormous threat to Earth. By joining forces, they showed the world that they are indeed Earth's Mightiest Heroes.

Now that the team has been established, that doesn't mean they will necessarily continue fighting side-by-side at all times. This is a world that is just beginning to see super-powered individuals. While there may be threats to innocent lives, they most likely won't all be at the magnitude of what was seen in the movie.

No Caption Provided

Because of everything they went through and the eventual success, it's clear that the team will gather once again. And because of the success at the box office, you know a sequel is bound to happen as well. What could be the event or driving force that causes the Avengers to assemble once again? (There will be some minor spoilers below).

== TEASER ==

What is clear is the team will be taking some time for themselves. We know Iron Man 3 is about to begin filming and so far there are no signs of any other Avengers showing up (Scarlett Johansson's Black Widow was attached but it was recently stated she would not play a role in the film). Thor 2 is set for 2013 and Captain America 2 hits theaters in April 2014. The members will fight their smaller battles on their own until some huge crisis brings them back together.

Thanos

No Caption Provided

The obvious threat could be Thanos. If Thanos arrived on Earth with the Infinity Gauntlet, that would be enough of a reason for the team to get back together. They would probably even want to bring in some new members as well. Thanos and the Infinity Gauntlet would be extremely tricky to pull off in this cinematic universe. It's one thing to accept alien invaders coming through a portal in the sky and even gods from Asgard. The idea of yet another alien with an all-powerful weapon could be pushing it for the non-comic book reading audience.

No Caption Provided

There's also the fact that the Infinity Gauntlet is way too powerful. Sure the heroes won against it in the comics but trying to translate the miniseries into a single movie might be a bit much. Yet we have already seen a live action Infinity Gauntlet. It's said to have been locked away in Odin's vault (which could barely be seen in the actual movie) and a replica was on display at San Diego Comic Con last year a couple years ago.

A better fit for Thanos would be in the possible Guardians of the Galaxy movie being planned by Marvel Studios. Perhaps Thanos will be the connection between the current Avengers/Marvel movies and the galactic part of the cinematic universe. The Avengers 2 would be too soon and he doesn't exactly have a quick way to get to Earth. Establishing him in a Guardians movie would be a way to show audiences who he is and, again, tie these franchises together.

If not Thanos and/or the Infinity Gauntlet, what else would be possible?

Secret Invasion

No Caption Provided

Early on, there was a rumor that Cobie Smulders would not only be playing Maria Hill but also "Skrull Queen" (who we know as Queen Veranke). The idea of Skrulls infiltrating the planet and replacing some of Earth's Mightiest Heroes could have been a fascinating story to see. Unfortunately, again, we've already had an alien invasion. It would be too much for the team to only assemble whenever aliens arrive. How come the aliens have all decided to start visiting Earth now? We've also already seen members of the team at odds with each other. The mistrust and suspicion of members possibly being replaced by Skrulls could lead to some epic hero vs. hero fighting but we've already seen that.

Civil War

No Caption Provided

Rather than try to create another threat to Earth or come up with a team of supervillains for the Avengers to face, it might be easier to have them fight each other in the Civil War story. Part of the trick to these movies is making the characters that appear on screen believable. While we would all love to see the Masters of Evil or other Avengers enemies, trying to put them all on screen runs the risk of comic book overload. There needs to be a balance between the two.

With this sudden appearance of multiple super-powered individuals and Nick Fury not being able to fully keep them in line or even together, the government (or mysterious "Council") might want them all to come forward and register. The problem with this idea is we don't have a big enough superhero community to really capture the essence of the story. Trying to introduce a large number of new characters just to have them choose sides might be too much.

Atlantis Attacks

No Caption Provided

Atlantis Attacks was a big event in the Avengers history (but I can't say it was one of my favorites). In 1989, this story was a major crossover that took place in the annuals of several characters' titles. It may be another invasion but one coming from below might be different enough than another invasion from above.

Who owns the rights to Namor these days? I believe it was Universal at one point but nothing was ever done with the character. He could be locked in at Fox with the Fantastic Four rights or maybe they've reverted back to Marvel.

Having Atlantis attack could go along with the introduction of Namor. It's unfortunate that we didn't see any mention of him in Captain America: The First Avenger as part of the Invaders. I'm sure Marvel/Disney wouldn't mind another potential spin-off movie they could have on their hands.

Is Atlantis attacking enough of a story? The existence of Atlantis should be believable after seeing The Avengers and Thor. It just seems that we need something other than a large scale invasion to set the sequel apart from the first film.

What about Red Skull?

No Caption Provided

Hugo Weaving's performance of Red Skull was one of the good things about the Cap movie. Have we really seen the end of him? I'd love to see the return of Red Skull and have him initiate an Acts of Vengeance storyline. Unfortunately the cinematic universe isn't quiet large enough to have enough villains with grudges for that story arc. I'm not sure if even the return of the Red Skull would be enough to bring the team back together. He'd have to be working with some other big guns to make it really work.

It seems odd that HYDRA simply disappeared and hasn't been heard of since. Maybe they've been secretly rebuilding their organization and are about to strike. This could give the sequel a more grounded nemesis to deal with. But then again, fighting HYDRA might not be flashy enough.

Perhaps a new story?

No Caption Provided

Just because the Avengers are rooted in comic books doesn't mean the story for the next movie has to be inspired from an actual comic book arc. It would help to add some credibility to the story among comic book readers but it's not as if the first movie was a straight forward adaptation.

Basically what the next movie needs is a giant threat. An alien invasion shouldn't be used again. We can't really have a team of supervillains trying to take over the world. That might be a little hard to swallow.

The idea that did start forming in my mind would be for someone like Red Skull to infiltrate the government (as he did in the Red Zone arc). The Avengers would be branded as traitors and hunted down while they fight to clear their name and defeat the Red Skull. The problem is, I think this is the plot for G.I. Joe: Retaliation.

These are just some ideas so far. A lot of people are leaning towards Thanos but I think he'd be better for a third movie rather than the next sequel (or better yet, in Guardians of the Galaxy first). There are many other threats like Ultron or Kang that could work. They would just require more set up in characters and story and could be too much for a single movie. Perhaps we'll have to wait and see what the next batch of solo movies has to offer and possibly set up for the sequel.

There aren't enough characters for a film based on Civil War in the cinematic universe. There's what....six heroes at the moment? Banner and Thor didn't even show up in that silly event, so I don't see where they can go without at least establishing ten more heroes within that universe that are primarily Earth-based.

Just go with Kree/Skrull war. Thor already explained what the activation of the Cube did: it sends out a beacon, basically saying that Earth is prepared for "a higher form of war". That would easily explain aliens dragging Earth into the conflict. It would also be a great way to introduce Mar-Vell, Ronan, and Carol Danvers.

Also, why not start including other mythic pantheons into the mix? Perhaps have the Olympians attack Earth for some reason, and introduce audiences to fan-favorites like Hercules, Zeus, Ares, Athena, and so on.

There's also the Mandarin. Seeing as The Avengers was heavily rooted in the story stemming from Thor and slightly from Captain America, why not give us a story where one of Tony Stark's most dangerous adversaries makes his glorious debut?

Another possibility could be The Leader, seeing as there was a nod to him towards the end of The Incredible Hulk. Come up with a plot where The Leader starts spreading gamma radiation throughout the planet and begins working with the remnants of HYRDA and some of Tony's enemies to bring SHIELD and our beloved heroes to their knees.

IMHO it's much to early to even be thinking about anything Civil War related in the next Avengers movie. Third movie maybe. BUt now much too early.besides, then we have to do the tie in with Spidey (which wouldnt be an entirely bad idea if you ask me, but at the same time you might wanna give Garfield a bit more time too to get used to the role as well.

... What happened to Red Skull?

I mean, he touched the cube (I expected the "Final Boss" fight) and he just get teleported somewhere in the universe, what happened to him, is he with Thanos, is he with some aliens, is he in the planet of the Apes, I mean, he is not just some random Nazi lost in space, and I find it very funny (my imagination is too damn active)... I really want to know what happened to him.

Has to be Thanos. I don't see why, as the article starts with, cinema audeinces would have a problem with invading aliens with super powerful weapons. We see loads of them already so one more isn't going to over egg the pudding.

Like it says above there are too few characters to do the Civil War storyline and it's too early in the teams existence. I'd love to see Namor in a movie too but the Atlantis Attacks one doesn't make sense. They could be teasing Thanos for a GOTG but why have your big bad beaten in one film to set him up for another?

It's too early for the civl war, the universe is barely established, or populated, so dividing it in half won't amount to much. Personally I'd like to see The masters of evil show up cause I love super villain team vs super hero team type scenarios, maybe something new with them or something like Avengers: Under Siege. I'd also like to see something along the lines of Maximum Security cause I love when the heroes are put in the situation of being trapped when the world is in lockdown, like JL's Starcrossed. I'd also like to see Loki come back in the style of Acts of Vengeance once more is added to this universe.

Now those are just my ideas for later Avengers adventure, based on the ending I'd say Infinity Gauntlet is definitely the way to go.

I just hope that they'll have a couple of new members in the next movies. Maybe introduce them to the public in the upcoming solo movies and then have them join the Avengers. I'm thinking about characters like Hank Pym, Hercules or Black Panther. Or maybe even New Avengers characters like Luke Cage or Iron Fist.

@Illuminatus: Mandarin...leader...Olympians attack earth...And you call civil war silly? Those 3 ideas are so far out there it would be a bust. Leader looks like a jelly bean with a massive tumor, Mandarin and his rings no way. I feel like Thanos would be cool but you couldn't do the whole Infinity Gauntlet story line. because theres way too many characters for that.

I think bringing in more characters could be a huge mistake. The more characters you bring in the is the mistake the BATMAN movies made.

I think Civil War is too charged a subject for the movies. The heroes fighting heroes only worked for the first movie because they all didn't know each other. Now they do know one another. Having them split just to reunite in the end would get boring fast.

Exactly, since most mainstream audiences don't know who Thanos is right know, but if he was subtlely introduced in different sequels and viral marketing as a shadowy mastermind I think ppl will really get into him as a big bad for Avengers 2.

Civil War - Not yet enough characters for that to happen. Other movie companies still owns the rights to some of the marvel characters.

Secret Invasion - same reason above.

Ultron - Needs to have an Ant man/Yellow Jacket movie first.

Thanos - We saw it already after the credits they just need to establish a plot.

By the way do any of you remember the blonde girl that was being interviewed after the battle? While being saved she kinda looked at cap as if she knows him..........Sharon Carter?

The Skrulls would require people being more used to the heroes/already having the team established and if possible more characters around to play with the distrust aspect.

While adapting Civil Wars for example would be nice, I'd prefer they try something brand new and original :P

Avengers 1 had Loki, Loki's alien army, and then Thanos, does this mean they have to take things up a notch? Raise the threat level? Can they get away with Baron Zemo and his Masters of Evil? Would Ultron be enough compared to Avengers 1? Could they get away with Kang the Conquerer? Or does it have to go more naturally from alien invasion in Avengers 1 to the Kree/Skrull War and then beyond? And never able to include Kang, Ultron, Zemo, etc?

Some threats can be managed, I think, in the solo films. Cap can handel Zemo and the Red Skull in his own movies. But for me Ultron is an Avengers bad guy. You need the Avengers for it. It wouldn't be the same with random SHIELD agents or something.

The movies will have to deal with Thanos, and that means space stuff. Will that include the Kree or Skrulls?

I have an idea for when they bring Ant Man/Wasp into the movies.

Hank Pym joins the team, and while he seems heroic he feels out of place. But everything seems fine, just another team member. In the next Avengers after that film we see that Pym is actually mentally unstable. He has a breakdown and creates Ultron and uses his own brain patterns as a blueprint. Ultron becomes the living robotic embodiment of all of Pym's hatred, resentment, and jealousy for all the Avengers, including his wife Janet/Wasp and for Pym himself. He wants to kill them all. In his schemes he creates the Vision, the 1st AI robot created by a robot without a human involved. In the final battle Vision joins the Avengers and Pym leads the charge and redeems himself through his actions and through Vision. Sort of like Pym (the father) taught his son to hate, now he redeems himself through his grandson Vision by teaching him that hate is wrong. Another way to look at it is that Pym took his dark side and gave it a body of its own.

Originally I thought that the alien invasion might actually be Atlantis invading like they did in the FF comics, with their Atlantian ships and armor. Namor leading them and his giant sea monsters. I thought that would be the perfect way to introduce Namor into the movies. But now they had an invasion in Avengers 1 and have unfinished things they have to deal with in the next films so that might make it hard to get to Namor. And again would that be a step down from Avengers 1? Having an alien invasion, Loki (demi god) and Thanos? Would Namor be a let down from that?

I have a big idea for the whole franchise too. The cast wont want to play these characters forever. Eventually they will leave the Avengers franchise. Robert Downey Jr. is already reported to be out after Iron Man 3 and Avengers 3. So I have a way to keep the films and franchise going. Bring in Ant Man and Wasp in Avengers 2, that way when Chris Evans and the rest leave when their contracts are up after Avengers 3 you still have Avengers the audience knows in Avengers 4. So you can then bring in more Avengers from the comics into Avengers 4, like Ms. Marvel, Wonder Man, Vision (brought in in the Ultron story), Scarlet Witch, etc. So then when the actors who play Ant Man and the Wasp's contracts are up and they leave too you still have the others signed up for more films. So you stagger the cast's rotation. You still have members of the cast signed up for the next film or the next 2 films. You could keep the films going (from a contract perspective) for a long time much like Law and Order. You don't even have to recast them. So you could even bring Bucky/Cap into the Avengers as the new Captain America when Evans is done.

Aren't they going to have the films cross into the AKA tv show that will also include Luke Cage and a cameo by Ms. Marvel? Maybe they could also introduce some ideas for the bad guys here too.

I'd go for Pym as the unfortunate pawn of Thanos in the next film. This opens up room to add Wasp, Ultron and even Jocasta. Pym gets to join the Avengers, maybe as an advisor aspiring to be a hero, but ultimately fails them, he builds Ultron to prove himself, but Thanos puts a wrench in that plan and he and the avengers have to pick up the pieces, maybe sacrificing himself at the end. Good drama and we can slip in a Miss Marvel or another character for the next one.

I vote for Ultron with Ant-Man and the Wasp being a part of the Avengers next movie (maybe replacing Hawkeye and the Black Widow--who, in my humble opinion, were weak characters in the movie). I'd also like to see minor appearances by the Red Skull, the Mandarin, and the Leader.

Ugh! I would hate it if Thanos ended up being the villain for Avengers 2!!! Like, I would actually boycott that movie because of my strong dislike for that character. I mean, seriously? What world do we live in when a character who is essentially a Darkseid wannabe could make it to the big screen before Darkseid himself??? I would much rather have Ultron be the villain. He's much more interesting than Thanos IMO and could actually help bring Hank Pym into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Anyway, I haven't seem it yet, so nobody spoil me if you respond to my comment.

They could always branch off the Thunderbolt story line but add a twist to it. Make it so they are a team created by and working strictly for the government (its already hinted that the higher ups don't like the Avengers). That way they can be violent and cut throat, be at odds with the Avengers, and have the public against them. Then for the twist you can have the Red Skull(or some other villain) be pulling their strings and setting them on a path to "kill" the Avengers. Its a stretch but at the same time its not to out there, it can establish new characters either on the Avenger's side, the Thunderbolt's, or both sides. Matter of fact it would be easy to introduce some of the characters in the upcoming sequels that are coming out. That way the audience can see that there are other beings out there that can give the Avengers a run for their money.

Most people demanding the infinity gauntlet have clear not watched the movie.

Firstly the infinity gauntlett is a highly overrated story. it has no aged well and would not fit at all with the tone of the movie and marvel cinematic. Thanos wants the movie version of cosmic cube, loki promised it him and failed. movie audiences will never accept the infinity gauntlet, I mean come on its a glove, that seems to look a human hand (in a universe where the potential of aliens of all shapes and sizes) that has glowing gems in and can control the entire universe. They toned down the cosmic cube for make it more understandable and believable to audience. They won't Infinity gauntlet for us nerd only.

Much like transformers - ITS ALL ABOUT THE CUBE

Secret Invasion - Can't be done for legal reasons, Fox own the rights to skulls along with the fantastic four, hence why the movie has the ultimate skrulls the citeratuasofoajjwjfw - whatever they are called.

Civil War could only work in comics, because of high number of characters. that said, the movie at end foreshadows that the security council (who have control of shield) are not happy with the avengers and see them as a possible threat. so while a hero vs hero fight is not possible, hero v governments/shield is.

Really the the answer is be original, the film is influence by a lot avengers stories, but is not tired directly one story, despite the ultimates been the clearly the best story that would be easy to translating the avengers to the big screen.

One thing I hate about the Marvel movies (And always have hated) is the lack of accreditation for the other heroes. A mention of Reed Richards, Parker or Xavier would've sent me over the edge, but like always I was let down. To be perfectly honest, I'd go the Secret War route, or do something the legitimize Dr.Doom again.

@Queen Ninjeta: Can't be done. Fox owns all things X-Men and Fantastic Four related (with the exception of Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch, but even there, it's limited). If the Marvel Studios films mentions/shows any of those characters, they get sued.

I'd think it would be better to not follow the comic book for a while, I mean just look at Chris Nolan's Bat-movies. Sure it is good to always know you can try to remake an event on the big screen, but that just seems like a copout for thinking of new original material.

Ultron would be the most 'realistic' threat...but I think Red Skull should return

Civil war should be in the 3rd or 4th movie ( are movies allowed to have a 4th btw ? )  I personally agree with not basing the story on a comic book arc.  I hope that they have this where Cap, Iron man, Thor and Hulk are on other mssions and they bring in spidey and other unfathomed talent to get a taste of action, wouldnt that be great?

maybe the next film is about Thanos invading earth with the IG, which he aquires in Thor 2... but that would be to much for earth to handle.... god dammit they should've had spidey in there... but different studios blah blah

Ultron would be great! I also think introducing other heroes like the Inhumans or something could work, at first they're suspicious of them and then eventually they work it out and so on. I'd love for one powerful character to come in like Anti-Man or someone along those lines. My dream would be for them to tentatively introduce Sentry and then let them play out the whole World War Hulk returns to earth enraged scenario.

The main thing for me is to have a good villain that can challenge them all physically, (so powerful), and to introduce some more cool heroes like Hank Pym, Ms. Marvel, Wonder Man etc.

The only problem with Secret Invasion and Civil War is that they need at least one more movie before they can get either to work well (Avengers 3, 4, or 5) or even a second trilogy about it.

They should stick with Thanos or Red Skull for the next one or even two to keep non comic readers in the loop. If not they would have advertising problems like John Carter where your average person has no idea what is going on.

Atlantis Attacks would be interesting as well, but difficult to actually win because Iron Man would be the only team member to realistically go to Atlantis. As for an original story, I hope not, that doesn't seem as good as something inspired by the comics

They could surprise everyone and to the story where Ms. Marvel gets pregnant, that would be a mindf*&$!...

I'd like to see the threat focus on a different locale for the next film. Why do the bads always attack New York? Why not another major city? If, for example, London was attacked we could see some new characters from there (Captain Britain, Union Jack) and that might be interesting.

Worth remembering is why Loki worked so well as a villain. It was an established, relateable character with a motivation that built upon plot threads from a film we'd seen. He expressed sensibilities that resonated with all of the main characters, making for just as good a sparring partner in words as in actual trading blows.

It's easy to get carried away, suggesting all these comic storylines, but the most important aspect is ultimately that the threat is not only BIG and warrants assembling the Avengers, but also that it's an interesting character on more levels than the pure fighting.

I think Thanos foreshadows a Guardians film more than anything at this point. I think that's such a fantastical film, inevitably, that the pressure on a fascinating villain is reduced somewhat. As much as Marvel states that The Avengers is its own franchise that stands on its own, teasing Avengers 2 already when it's so far away almost seems like a waste of teaser space.

Hopefully they realise how important the interaction with Loki was in Avengers, and how using components and plot devices from the individual films made for a satisfying Avengers climax. They really shouldn't just just grab a random CG space man and slam them together like action figurines.

thanos seems likely. secret invasion would be cool, but yeah a lot of Avengers was a similar battle to the finale of secret invasion, besides the movie Salt is a similar concept.

as for civil war, this concept could be awesome and work well but the only issue i see is theres no where near enough super heroes in the universe yet. civil war worked because theres like a thousand heroes in the MU, but we only have a handful so far in the cinematic U.

ultron is a good idea too.

I vote for Secret Wars, that way you could have nearly all the movie villians show up, even the dead ones cause the Beyonder would warp time to bring them back for the battle. If not that story, then I want the Kang War storyline. That, in my opinion, was the last time the Avengers comic was any good.

Avengers that need to show up: Wasp, Namor, Monica Rambeau, Jocasta, Quicksilver, Scarlet Witch (NO M-DAY!), Iron Fist, Vision & She-Hulk.
