Off My Mind: What Will The End Of Brightest Day Bring?

Did this comic 'event' accomplish what it set out to do?

No Caption Provided
These days, comic book events tend to flow from one to the next. Some have been self contained and others involve most of the comic universe. With the end of Brightest Day fast approaching, I started thinking how much has changed since the start? Has there been any payout from this event?

Comparing Brightest Day to Blackest Night, even though we had a lot of miniseries tie ins for Blackest Night, it almost felt more self contained. Brightest Day has not only been a bi-monthly series but also a brand on several titles like Green Arrow and Green Lantern. The story itself involved many of the twelve that were resurrected at the end of Blackest Night. This gave the series a broader feel but also made it harder to follow along with multiple storylines fighting for space in each issue. We only had pieces of the story and some characters' went untouched for issues at a time.

With the image of Deadman released earlier this week, it doesn't look like everyone will have a happy ending, despite the overall mood being lighter. Deadman has returned to life and has been having a pretty good time eating cheeseburgers, getting close to Dawn Granger and getting reacquainted with his relatives. But what does this image mean?
 == TEASER ==
The pile of dust could be a number of things. My first thought was because he is getting closer to Dawn, maybe she somehow gets blasted into dust. I don't think that will be the case as she has another fate in store (more on that in a second). Most likely something will happen to the actual White Lantern power battery. Deadman was supposed to find the new guardian for life but what if he fails? It could be that he made a choice that burned out the Lantern. If that's the case, what does that mean for the lives of those that were given the chance to return from the dead? Can they still have life if the force that brought them back is destroyed?

What about the other prophecies the Lantern told the others?
No Caption Provided
Captain Boomerang has to try to kill Dove. Jade needs to help her brother balance the darkness (which we'll see in upcoming issues of Justice League of America). Osiris is still unable to free his sister. The idea of Max Lord trying to stop a war doesn't seem to likely as he's focused on finding Wonder Woman. Hank Hall has to save Dove. Professor Zoom seems to have already accomplished his task.

This brings another question, what if any of these individuals fail to accomplish the task bestowed upon them? Was this part of the deal in getting a second life? I've always questioned why the Lantern would want Boomerang to try to kill Dove and Hank to save her. All it would accomplish is making sure Boomerang stays true to his evil ways and for Hank to make sure he can be a hero. The Lantern is supposed to be a force for Life yet bringing back a killer goes against the idea.
No Caption Provided
I always felt that the return of these twelve would pave the way for more comic series. How long until we get a Firestorm, Deadman, Aquaman or Hawkman & Hawkgirl comic? Going back to the first image, I don't think Brightest Day will end on a completely happy note. I see something really big and really bad happening. I don't think Deadman will stay alive. More importantly, I want to see what happens if one of the twelve fails to accomplish what they were told to do. Will the fate of the White Lantern have any part in the upcoming War of the Green Lanterns?

Max has accomplished his task too, in the issue of Generation Lost where Magog dies the White Lantern says "mission accomplished life returned."

That's the question T!

One would hope that we wouldn't need any more "set-up" and that new projects would be launched for Aquaman, Deadman, Firestorm and maybe even the Hawks and Martian Manhunter (although fan interest in their BD storylines is low) but with recent FLASHPOINT teasers, I fear that we will be getting more "Wait and see..." from DC.

My pessimistic view with regards to Brightest Day is "You ain't seen nothing yet, nor will you!"  LOL

If they kill off Deadman I won't read another DC comic. He's become one of my absolute favorites.

I think at least two or three will fail to accomplish what they are here for. I think G-Man is right, i think the Power battery is the ash in Deadman's hands (which to me seems dumb because Dove or Wonder Woman seem like two perfect choices for the Life Entity. Obviously they wouldnt give it to Wonder Woman bc she is to big of a character but if Hawk dies protecting Dove, then Dove is left on her own and she has already been shown to have the ability to use and create a white light and feels a tie to it.

Either Boomerang or Hawk can complete their goals but they cant both do it. I think Hawk will end up sacrificing himself to protect Dove (not saying he will die but i think he will step in the way of the boomerang)

I believe Deadman will be returned to being an actual dead man.

Aquaman seems to have succeeded right? It told him to find Aqualad before fighting Black Manta. Thats what he did, his should be accomplished unless im missing something.

I think Osiris will accomplish bringing his sister back.

Jade will accomplish balancing the darkness or whatever with her brother Obsidien.

It looks like hawkman and hawkgirl will accomplish their goals with outside help.

I thought Maxwell Lord was supposed to stop the beginning of Kingdom Come which it seems he has since he killed Magog so i would say his goal is accomplished.

I dont remember what Firestorm and Martian Manhunter were supposed to do.

Also we havent found much information out about the Star Forest yet as  far as i know.

That only leaves Zoom which has already accomplished his goal of bringing Barry Allen back from the "dead"

Jade, Professor Zoom and Maxwell Lord have all acomplished their missions already. Leaving Hawk, Osiris, Boomerang, Aquaman, Hawkman, Hawkgirl Firestorm, Martian Manhunter and Deadman up in the air.

The original motto of Brightest day was "Some second chances work, some don't" or something like that so AT LEAST one of them is biting the dust when this is over.

Now let's be frank, Aquaman, Martian Manhunter, Hawkman, Hawkgirl and Firestorm are pretty much confirmed to survive this.

So taht leaves Hawk, Osiris, Boomerang and Deadman. Who survives?

Osiris and Boomerang will definitely live, or Osiris will die to return Isis and Black Adam back from stone.

I think your review is pretty insightful.  The new picture that your referring to with Deadman and the dust is so open ended it could mean anything.  That's what teaser do, they create speculation.

I have to agree with some other comments, Deadman being alive right now is pretty cool.  There's a lot of stories to be told there and if Geoff and Peter make him dead again to wrap up the series it would be a shame.  I don't think he will die again.  Geoff and Peter are story tellers. Deadman being alive is a whole hell of a lot better story than him being dead.  Deadman has been dead for so long he doesn't know how to process everything.  Everything is a new experience for him again. He's be so caught up in him being alive that he hasn't been "living" until recently.  In the last issue he starting to charge the power battery.  This is huge.

Again, there still a lot of story to be told.  What happens when the battery charges completely?
Most importantly, I think your missing the twist.  I think Deadman is the Avatar or guardian for the White Lantern. Just like Black Hand was the Avatar for the Black Lanterns.  The chosen one, is actually, who's going to be the White Lantern.  At first, it looked like it was going to be Batman but, that's not the case.  My hunch is it's going to be Dove.  She was killing off Black Lanterns and nobody knew why.  She is the embodiment of peace.  She would be perfect as the new White Lantern.

As far as individuals completely their tasks, there a ton of speculation there as well.  If an individual doesn't complete a task do they die again?  If every task isn't complete what will happen?  Will the White Lantern be destroyed?

So, many questions it makes my head hurt.  I have the wait and see approach as well.
We are in good hands with Geoff and Pete Tomasi. Regardless, of what happens it will be good.

Hope it ends soon, BD has just been one big mess with no clear direction. Blackest Night was fine, it was simple and fast paced as a zombie apocalypse and a doomsday clock can be, even if it was just great big ring fest. BD however is more like 5-7 different stories thats only vaugely connected to each other.
Could ofcourse be that the only one of those who came back that i care about is J'onn.

As posted others before me, i also wonder why the lantern wants people to die. It's been demanding Magog's, Doves and anyone Osiris can get his hands on's heads to get the big prize. A vaild question is; is this Lantern really a force of good? Or is it something like Jigsaw that wants people to do horrible things to teach them something. Like Osiris learning that ressurecting a life goddess like Isis by killing people is probably not smart. (we know already she is comming back)

One thing, I seriously doubt that Boomerang is going anywhere. I feel like Johns brought him back mostly so he could have all of the Rogues when he started writing Flash. He hasn't kept any secrets about his love for the Rogues. I think he'll keep the complete set.

So yeah, Dove is probably biting the dust, though she's playing a fairly big role in Birds of Prey, so maybe not. I'm not sure.

It does accomplish a lot of things but the format of slicing up such epic stories gets very frustrating in a 20 page format.

I honestly think it's, like some people have said, more of a thing where what everyone is TOLD to do isn't necessarily what they should or are going to do.  Captain Boomerang's been going through something of a moral dilemma now that he's realizing that everything bad he's ever done always comes right back to him, and although he desperately wants to be a Rogue again, I'm not sure he'll throw the boomerang when the time comes.

Just a theory, and just based on one character's characterization so far, but I think it's something to think about.  Probably everyone won't make it out of Brightest Day alive, but I certainly hope their returns weren't completely in vain.

Maybe this story will end with the return of the real Firestorm. Not some punk college kid who cries and whines all the time. That would be good enough for me.

Deadman is the best choice for the white entity's "ultimate protector"
he serves no purpose in the DCU unless something like Rama Kushna (dead) or the white entity is telling him what to do

Max/Zoom's missions are confirmed as complete. The Lanterns are to find the Entities, whihc should be wrapping up soon. Boomerang's mission is to "throw" the Boomerang, not to kill Dove. Hank's mission is to protect her. I don't get the reasoning behind that whole deal though, seams a bit convoluted and counterintuitive. Firestorm's supposed to protect the white lantern until the champion's (Likely Deadman's) ready. I think Aquaman's total mission is to avert the Water War, not just find Aqualad. J'onn's supposed to "Burn It Down". Which has proven to mean, well nothing so far. He's not even doing anything remotely related to a forest. He's spending time being mind controlled/trying to revive Mars. There might be clues to the Forest in Green Arrow, but I hate that title and refuse to read that crap, Krul can suck a fat one.

With all these loose ends floating around I think they'll rush endings to each mission, but they'll be most unsatisfying to say the least. But I'm going to ride it out to the end since I started down this path. Hopefully this will lead to worthy title launches or at least inclusions of JLI, J'onn,& Aquaman in the near future.

As far as the Deadman image goes, it might just be an image or a cover, and as we all know covers/promo images rarely reflect the specifics of the story.

The lantern told Jade she already accomplished her mission in JLA #48.

Max Lord accomplished his mission in Generation Lost #13. He killed Magog and stopped the war. The war being Kingdom Come.

Aquaman SHOULD have accomplished his mission. Seriously. Sure he needed to find Aqualad to stop the war, but the White Lantern stated he JUST HAD TO FIND AQUALAD. HE IS DONE.

What do you mean by the lanterns are a life or death thing? You talking about the mission taking place in the GL title?

That would be lame if they have Hawk die only to bring him back again. Johns/Tomasi do things I disagree with but I think they're both better writers than that.

Yeah, it looks like he's to protect the Lantern from who/whatever is commanding Deathstorm

It would be such a waste to kill Deadman again and Dove being the champion/guardian would highly conflict with her/hawks role in Birds of Prey. Therefore I don't foresee Hawk dying or her being the wielder.

I don't think the Atlanteans  & Xebels joining hands to sing kumbaya anytime soon. They were put in that penal colony for a reason and they aren't too pleased with being there. I think Aquaman's gon' have to ensure that they stay locked up. That aside, Aquaman's mission WAS stated as finding Aqualad, so maybe the writers forgot that?

At this point I don't think Johns knows what J'onn supposed to be doing lol

I have mixed feelings about Boston, Hank and Digger. If any of the 12 fail, I have a feeling that atleast 1 of the 3 will.

I put some thought into it and came up with this idea

The final issue will see Digger succeed in his mission, Hank and Boston will fail. During the final confrontation, Digger will throw the boomerang at Dove. Hank will miss the boomerang by mere centimeters and in response to Hank missing his chance, Boston with his ring drained of it's power, will either:

A.) Shield Dawn by trying to charge his ring infront of her, holding the White Power Battery up infront of himself. The battery shatters (due to the fact that Digger's boomerangs are Black Lantern like constructs) which causes it to turn to ash and Boston fails along with Hank (Thus the ash from the picture above and Boston seemingly loosing his power). Despite Dawn's pleading, Hank and Boston both say their goodbyes and explode into white ash and the Entity explains why Hank and Boston can't return as the story comes to a close.

B.) Try to use his ring, disreguarding the fact that it's drained. But, realizing his mistake too late, Dawn is killed by the boomerang. The Lantern then speaks to Boston, telling him that he had failed his mission to await for the savior. By allowing Boston visions of the future that would've been, it's revealed that Boston had gotten Dawn pregnant, their unborn child being the savior. Boston, in shock and on the edge of his sanity begins attacking Digger with everything he's got until his punches no longer affect Digger as Boston begins fading away...His mission failed. In the epilouge it's revealed that Boston is stuck in a void of nothing but complete darkness, a light grows brighter as Boston awakes and rushes towards it. As he reaches the light a voice speaks to him, telling him that dead isn't really dead (similar to what The Entity told Boston when he tried to revive . A figure emerges from the light and is revealed to be Dawn, they embrace as the page fades into white.
These are pretty much just some random ideas and I'm pretty sure that Geoff has got an awsome yet saddening ending for Brightest Day.

If the lantern turns to dust, everybody dies. It is the source of life, and without life,we are dead.

My money is on Deadman being the guardian for life. And I bet Captain Boomerang throwing the boomerang at Dove was just to help Hawk prove he can be a hero still and not just think about chaos. Not just kill her.

lol Honestly i dont quite remember but after going back and re-reading most of this thread, i think thats what i ment about the lanters.

I agree. I dont think he is a bad character but i dont particularly like him either. He kind of reminds me of Ares (Marvel).

Oh, i guess that makes sense. I didnt even think Deathstorm was trying to get to the white lantern. I thought he was just trying to destroy the world.

What are Hawk and Doves role in Bird of Prey? I think that it would make sense, if they kill off Hawk and give Dawn the Entity.

Neither do i but i could see them forcing it on us that Mera kills her sister or presumably kills her and takes command of her people then calling an end to teh hate towards the Atlanteans Makeing everyone at peace with each other again.

lol Yea, it almost seems like they just gave up on Jonnz's goal and just brought him back.
