Off My Mind: What If Sun-Based Superheroes Turned Into Vampires?

Would they just become normal vampires?

No Caption Provided
Yesterday we talked about the X-Men fighting vampires. As I woke up this morning, I started wondering, what if a superhero with sun-based powers was turned into a vampire? You would think that if a character like Spider-Man or the Flash were turned into vampires, it would be bad news. Vampires with super powers would be crazy and even more deadly for the general public.

With the X-Men, I thought about someone like Sunspot being turned into a vampire. I'm going along the lines of a vampire will burst into flames in the sun and not the 'sparkle' approach seen in Twilight. If Sunspot's powers are solar based, would they eventually go away since he can't sit out in the sun to recharge?

A more interesting character to think about being turned into a vampire is Superman (no offense to any Sunspot fans). I know, how could a vampire sink their teeth into the Man of Steel? I can't recall if I actually read Superman #180 (in which the Ed McGuinness cover art can be seen to the right) but obviously Superman didn't get turned into a vampire when fighting Dracula. Let's just say some crafty vampire had some Kryptonite handy that weakend Superman long enough to sink his teeth into him. Superman gets charged from our yellow sun. If he's a vampire that can't go suntanning, does that mean this SuperVampire would eventually become just a normal vampire? Would he still have a weakness to Kryptonite?

The other question that was brought up and I'll bring it up here (because I don't see myself devoting another article to vampires again anytime soon), is there a cure for being a vampire (besides a stake to the heart)? Is it just a matter of the right kind of magic to...magically turn the victim normal? What's going to happen to any X-Men that gets turned into a vampire? I say if Marvel is going to have the ba...guts to turn a 'beloved' character like Jubilee into a vampire, they should stick to the decision. Some things need to be permanent. We already know that death isn't. Let's see there be some lasting repercussions to something.

So if vampires are pains in the neck (sorry, it had to be done, I've resisted for two days), what would a super vampire be like? Should we just hope their superpowers are affected by the sun and they become just normal vampires? If we see superheroes being turned into vampires, should be we scared of what could happen next?

If a character like sunspot got bitten wouldn't he not become a vampire? He's living energy. Maybe their should be a one shot comic, where everyone is a vampire.

Why don't you think a step ahead, and think about the fact that what if a vampire, let's say Dracula, Absorbed the powers and became resilient against the sun, maybe it was his plan all along?

well first of all, Superman could get vamped, as vampires are magical creatures.  The bite would go through, and im pretty sure whatever magical effects the bite would have on normal people would translate.  idk if were talking about the same comic, but there was one with Superman and Robin fighting vampires, and im pretty sure he got bit and almost turned or something. idk, it was the 90's.
The on again-off again way to de-vamp people is to kill the first vampire in the chain. Think of the blood suckers as part of a pyramid scheme. You slay the top, and the pyramid goes poof. This concept is often used as a plot device though, and not often in serious vamp stories.
The other method is to re-soul the vamps (if the vamp is the type to loose its soul). I can recall a couple of stories where returning the soul brought the vamp back to life.

Im guessing with these solar heroes, one of 4 things would happen:
 1. the sun would burn the vamp contaminant from their bodies
 2. they would die/weaken from lack of UV
 3. They would develop an alternat power source, like darkness or  the moon or some sort of evil wellspring of magic.
or 4. they become a sort of daywalker, where their ability to draw energy from the sun overcomes their weakness of it.

but the great thing about comics is that there are probably a billion things that the minds of guys like Joss whedon and Robert Kirkman and geoff Johns could do with vampires that we normal folk could never imagine.

Well, in marvel people have been trying to kill Dracula ever since, and he just keeps returning. This might be due to his eternal Damnation as an undead and therefore the actual "head" can't be destroyed, eternally.

I think it would be akin to say a symbiote infecting someone who's powers were sonic or flame based. If it did happen, the first time they used their powers... bye bye.

Now, take Deadpool and make him a vampire, then the world is screwed.

I think it would be a good way to kill Superman wouldn't it? I would think he would still be weak to kryptonite.

Blade wouldn't be written about like he was the past decade. He was for most part ignored, until some guys thought, wait a minute, wasn't there that bad-ass character from the 90's? And since Blade was a vampire too, it was bound to bring the Vampires aswell.

Blade is a badass and marvel would lose a lot of it's former glory if they would just ignore stories like "Tomb Of Dracula" or "Strange Tales", stories that were so spectacular at the times that it pretty much served as a foundation for what it represents today, who knows if we would have the same bandwidth of characters and story arcs without them.

This, whatever it may incline to, has my positive vote.

What I contemplate more is specifically with superman, If he is a vampire, what does a red sun do for his vampirism?  How would a red sun effect regular vampires?

 http://www.vampires.be/index.php?title=Sunlight

There are a few pseudo-scientific explainations for vampires being destroyed by by exposure to sunlight. Such as:

"It has to do with ultraviolet rays and a vampire's melanocytes.
UV rays are a form of ionizing radiation, which does heavy damage
to the DNA structure of cells. Because ultra violet rays are at such
a short wavelength (anywhere from 400 nanometres to 10 nanometres),
they are especially dangerous for the cells that undergo melanogenesis.
In a normal human, this damage causes your melanocytes to release more
melanin and darken the pigment of the skin, ie. get a tan. In vampires,
melanocytes are underfunctioning, and the photodamage to the melanocytes
causes such a drastic shift in melanogenesis that cells' lysosomes
actually initiate apoptosis. Dead cell matter at such a high
concentration puts so much pressure on surrounding tissue that the
blood vessels can become blocked, resulting in pressure buildup and
the eventual failure of the cardiovascular system. Normally, the process
takes somewhere from 10 to 15 minutes, and the vampire looks as though
he or she died of heart failure.

In extreme cases, the sudden blockage can result in internal bleeding
and rhabdomyolysis from sudden internal shock on surrounding muscles.
In this case, death can be instaneous of contact with sunlight."

Karolina Dean from the Runaways answers your question. She has solar-based powers, and when a vampire named Topher bit her, during Brian K Vaughn's run on the comic, he exploded because her blood was filled with solar energy.

Well, this all depends on what world these characters became vampires in. If they lived in Twilight world, vampires would only get their skin all diamond-looking. However, if you follow basic vampire laws, then I dunno. If Superman's only weakness is kryptonite and magic then I think he'll be fine.

That sounds awesome in a pull-tab can.   You provided a great response to this speculative question and honestly, that scenario sums up what would possibly happen.   I mean, if a Vampire manages to sink its fangs into a super hero  who is filled with solar energy which is basically the same thing as being exposed to sunlight, the Vampire would indeed perish in some manner.  Exploding sounds sweet wish I had read that one!

@G-Man:  Sounds like the answer to your question.   Nice puns, and an interesting question that I would never think to ask.

that would be a bad idea. its not like solar based characters are " immune " to the sun.
their ability isnt to block it out its to take it in. a vampire would just be committing suicide by
putting their own weakness into their own body, likewise if they got someone like Sunspot while he
was powered down, the minute he powered up he would incinerate himself.

in the case of Superman, and the issue in question, Dracula bit Superman and was incinerated because
Superman is a big battery for solar energy. weakening him with Kryptonite wouldn't help either. Superman
doesnt revert to a human, nor is he. That solar battery aspect is always present, even when low as its part of his Kryptonian
biology.

the more tactful idea though would be for a vampire to absorb the power to change physical form in a manner that blocks out the sun for them/keeps it from contacting them.

Seriously what is with vampires in this generation these days. You know I am getting tired of vampires, werewolves or whatever because I am sick  of this being in pop culture mainstream. Someone would say the same thing for other stuff that other people like  but I don't  see the horror genre unique but fear, gore to sex. I hope superheroes replace vampires for a long long time at least. HORROR IS OVERRATED and has for very long period.  Now where doing superheroes as or with vampires oh please already.

Vampires are definitely being toned down and directed more towards teens & tweens nowadays.
I am a huge Anne rice fan and prefer my vampires in that vein or maybe even a bit darker like they are in the 30 Days of Night franchise.
The only piece of vampire lit that I've even been all that interested in recently is the new Vertigo American Vampire series.

doesn't the moon reflect the sun's rays? so the superpowered vamp would get a dose. although not at the usual power level. i think they would still have their powers at a weakened level. although being a vamp usually enhances your abilities so would they not be even more powerful? interesting topic.
