Off My Mind: Too Many Clones In Comics?

Is there just too much cloning around?

There are some things you can always expect in comics. For example, when a character dies, you know they will return someday. A comic book plot line that seems to be occurring more often and has been around for a while is Clones. It almost feels that when a character is needed a nemesis that can fight the hero at the same level, an evil clone is created.

Clones aren't always a bad thing. There have been some clones that have fought the urge to be evil. Some even branch out and establish their own identities. Have we seen too many clones or do you think our heroes could use some more clone time?

Who has been your favorite clone? Are you tired of clones? What hero or villain would you like to see get a clone?

Not really clones are useful sometimes. Laura Kinney is my favorite Clone. Right now i think cloning should only be used to replace fallen heroes or villains...

I think that 'clones' have got to a point that they've become a bit of a joke.  An easy sci-fi/comic book way to write characters out of deadly situations... or provide an evil twin.   Which is why I think they've been pushing the boat out a bit more lately.  The clones in recent years have been characters like X-23, who is technically a clone... but they've made so many significant changes that she's not the Scarlet Spider to Wolverine's Spider-Man.

IRTT: Clones are a pretty annoying gimmick in comics. I think X-23 is the right way to do a clone. In her case she isn't simply a "female wolverine". She has her own distinct personality and history. Also, Ultimate Spider-Man did a great job of doing the "Clone Saga" right, IMO. Can't say the same for it's 616 counterpart...

I don't mind clones being in the storylines. Superboy has been one of my favourite characters since he was born. As far as the Scarlet Spider goes I now hate you G-Man because I just bought all those complete clone saga books!

Clones don't bug me as much as multi-dimensional get-togethers ala Captain Britain Corps.   I always feel like the writers make the characters put on red Star Trek uniforms.

Gotta go with Laura Kinny aka X-23, because she owns >.>

Also, I guess it depends how they're used and how many there are of the same single character. Like...Alice in RE: Extinction and Afterlife...kind of ridiculous, but still awesome. And if I remember right, X-23 was a triplet clone in Wolverine and the X-Men. -shrugs- depends depends depends

It's gotten to a point where the clone is the worst comic trope ever. The concept of alternate dimensions is pretty close though.

I believe that clones have been overdone when it is done poorly. If a writer is talented enough to try something new with it, I believe there is still some potential to be pulled out of the idea. These stories always come down to the same "Who is the real person and who is the clone?" Having a clone is used too much for deus ex machina or for a quick evil twin, which is bad because their are better ways of doing both. If the villain has the foresight to create a clone to put into a dangerous situation one would think we would come up with a better way to survive. An evil twin doesn't need to share a genetic code with the hero to be awesome. Look at Wolverine and Sabretooth, or Spider-Man and Venom.

On a side note, way does the cloning process always make people's moral compass screwed up? Using that logic we should just clone the most dangerous villains so that way we have a good version of them running around.

I refuse to believe that X-23 should actually be called a clone.  The main reason, SHE AND WOLVERINE HAVE DIFFERENT GENETIC MAKE-UPS, seriously, due to the fact that she's female, she's have 2 X chromosomes and Wolverine and and X and Y, so unless the cloned his DNA twice to get the other 2, and if so what happened to the clone waste, the other X came from another doner, probably Dr. Kinney, so that would make her his daughter rather than his clone.  But for more prove, let's look at when X-23 first appeared:

so these two people look anything alike?

I agree that she can't be an exact clone, but clones don't necessarily have to look exactly alike if they're raised in different environments.

clones are over used.

How about writers just write good stories? Instead of depending on plot twists killing heroes, cloning heroes/villains, etc., how about just good plots?

Paul Dini, take a bow. You manage to write incredible stories while not having to screw everything up to sell your material.

I'll tell ya what's awesome, that screen shot from the Spider-Man animated series clone saga.  Good times...goood times.  As far as awesome clones go, X-23 is definitely up there as well as the Ultimate Clone saga.  Clones can be sweet if done right but as a cop-out they can get aggrevating and confusing

Wait, we're complaining about clones when there are how many Spider-man books? Since Spidey is on two Avenger teams and appearing in every other title, he might as well have 15 clones going around.

@Jayso4201:
Agreed.  In fact, look what they did to Peter with all the One More Day, Brand New Day stuff and how relatively ridiculous the whole thing is.  If they had Ben, they could have easily had him in a lot of the new Spider-Man storylines without having those stories feel like a tired re-tread of stuff Peter's already been through.
Heck, the Origin of Species story-arc goin' on right now could have felt a lot cooler if it was Scarlet Spider facing off against the onslaught of Spidey rogues that Peter's been going through.

actu-clones (Scarlet-Spider, Laura Kinney, etc) are better than extra-dimensional clones (Bizarro, etc.)

Not for nothing, having alternate dimensions is cool, but do we need to make a seperate and distinc dimension everytime we decide to do a "What if...?" book Marvel?  And the number is totall bull too.  Why not start at 1 and then just add 1 more on every time?  We'd still be up to 25 million by now anyway. lol

But really, if you make a clone, at least make something out of it: not just an excuse to have another Iron Man running around, you know?

Clones have been around for years, but untill the whole "Clone Saga" affair they weren't considered much of a gimmick. I mean, mr Sinister's Marauders were cloned like a zillion times and no one ever complained (little crazy detour, Sabretooth was at first a member of the Marauders, whihc means that Sinister has a smaple of his DNA too... scarry).

After the audience (us) was overexposed to the idea in an arc of two years or so it became stale.

Given that I think that cloning might be a decent gimmick as long as two elements are considered:

  1. A clone is genetic double, not a personality double, a clone and his original are two different people and they should be treated as such
  2. Like any idea it should be used with a certain critaria

I agree, X-23 share only a portion of Logan's DNA, as such she isn't a proper clone. She is more like a test tube baby.  Same with Conner Kent/Con-El (even if in his case it's a bit freaky).

Overall I still like Ben Reilly as a character, he was clearly different from Peter to be his own man and not a simple carbon-copy.

@G-Man: Cheap copy?  All the clones are made by corporations and mad scientists with unlimited funding! ;-)

That said, in Marvel and DC, cloning technology ought to be cheaper than Life Model Decoy / Doombot type technology... but somehow it's less prevalent because clones are still regarded as icky.

Isn't it strange
Feels like I'm lookin' in the mirror
What would people say
If only they knew that I was

Part of some geneticist's plan (plan-plan-plan)
Born to be a carbon copy man (man-man-man)
There in a petri dish late one night
They took a donor's body cell and fertilized a human egg and so I say

I think I'm a clone now
There's always two of me just a-hangin' around
I think I'm a clone now
'Cause every chromosome is a hand-me-down

Look at the way
We go out walking close together
I guess you could say
I'm really beside myself

I still remember how it began (gan-gan-gan)
They produced a carbon copy man (man-man-man)
Born in a science lab late one night
Without a mother or a father, just a test tube and a womb with a view

I think I'm a clone now (a clone now)
There's always two of me just a-hangin' around
I think I'm a clone now (a clone now)
'Cause every chromosome is a hand-me-down

I think I'm a clone now (a clone now)
And I can stay at home while I'm out of town
I think I'm a clone now (a clone now)
'Cause every pair of genes is a hand-me-down

Signing autographs for my fans
Come and meet the carbon copy man
Livin' in stereo, it's all right
Well I can be my own best friend and I can send myself for pizza so I say

I think I'm a clone now
Another one of me's always hangin' around
I think I'm a clone now
'Cause every chromosome is a hand-me-down

I think I'm a clone now (a clone now)
I've been on Oprah Winfrey - I'm world renowned
I think I'm a clone now (a clone now)
And every pair of genes is a hand-me-down

I think I'm a clone now (a clone now)
That's my genetic twin always hangin' around
I think I'm a clone now (a clone now)
'Cause every chromosome is a hand-me-down

I think I'm a clone now (a clone now)

I'm done with the clones and alternate universe versions of characters. There have to be more creative ways for writers to create new plot twist and introduce new characters. Spider-Man took it to a level of absurdity... although I somewhat like the angle that Ultimate Spider-Man took with their Clone Saga.

The clone idea has been around a long time.  50 years at least from cartoons to comics its been done and redone.  Ditto for female versions of popular superheroes.  They are two sides of the same coin.  Popular comic book characters have either a female counterpart or a clone and in some cases both.  As long as both continue to sell comics they'll keep using the idea.

No. If anything we need more clones. Much more clones.

Actually, you know what? I'm being entirely facetious. We need a lot less clones and a whole lot less multiple universe crossovers, etc.

I'm sick of clones, the Clone Sage in Spider-Man sucked. I don't mind some alternate reality versions though, as long as it's not a clone.
