Off My Mind: The Original X-Men Traveling to the Present

How will see the present day Marvel Universe change the characters of the original X-Men? kevlar

Marvel NOW! is almost upon us and one of the titles forthcoming is ALL-NEW X-MEN. The idea is the original X-Men will somehow travel forward into the present day Marvel 616-Universe. It's been stated that this will be the team early in their careers. Time travel can always be a tricky business but there will be a lot to see here when the past meets the present.

Time travel isn't a new concept to the X-Men. We've seen it many times throughout the different series. One of the biggest stories was 'Days of Future Past.' This will be a new take on the idea as it is now the past coming to the present rather than the present going into the future.

No Caption Provided

There has been many changes since the team wore their original outfits. Not only will we be seeing the younger characters arrive (and Jean Grey returning from the dead in a sense), the young X-Men will be in for many shocks and you would think they'd want to run back to their time period as fast as possible. Each original member will learn quite a bit about what they are to become in their future.

== TEASER ==

Jean Grey

No Caption Provided

The young, innocent and hopeful X-Man will have to come to terms that she has died…more than once. If they are going to remain in the present for some time, we have to assume they'll be able to uncover everything their future selves have done. Jean gained the power of the Phoenix Force and destroyed entire star systems and ended billions of lives. Later she indirectly caused Cyclops and Madelyne Pryor's marriage to crumble. She and Scott end up getting married only to have him psychically cheat on her with Emma Frost, a former X-Men villain who became co-leader of the team. Aside from cheating, there's also what Cyclops did in AVENGERS VS. X-MEN #11.

When Jean arrives, she will see that she was held in high regard. People still looked up to her and the good she did accomplish. Wolverine was also deeply in love with her and named the new X-Men school after her. She has quite a bit to live up to.

Angel

No Caption Provided

Warren Worthington III pretty much had it all. He had some hard times dealing with the fact that he had actual wings growing out of his back. He quickly came to terms with it and continued to thrive on the team and in the business world. All of that was taken away when his wings were torn off and he was reborn as Death for Apocalypse. For a time his skin was blue and he only had razor sharp feathers. He managed to overcome that and eventually found love with Psylocke. Now that he has lost his memory and essence of who he was, his past self could easily get pretty depressed thinking about all the hardships he's going to go through.

Will he be able to prevent these things from happening if he returns to his own time period?

Beast

No Caption Provided
No Caption Provided

If we're talking about the hairless Hank McCoy traveling to the present, he should be in for a shock as well when he gets a look at his future self. Not only has he grown blue fur, but he's also gone through a couple changes. He went from his regular furry look to becoming more cat-like. And then there was that ridiculous costume he wore in ASTONISHING X-MEN. That's gotta be embarrassing as well. (I never understood how he kept that on).

Hank can be happy that he's respected as one of the most brilliant guys around the Marvel Universe. But he hasn't exactly had the best of luck in the romance department. Although he is still sort of with Abigail Brand. Hopefully he won't find out what he had to do on that mission with the Secret Avengers (in SECRET AVENGERS #16).

Iceman

No Caption Provided

Bobby was always the trickster of the group. This class clown grew up to become...an accountant. He also goes through some changes. There was the time he lost control of his power and had to wear a big old belt to prevent his powers from freezing everything over. Emma Frost took over his body and he discovered he could use his powers on a more molecular level. If parts of his body were shattered, he could repair it. Lately he's been seen making separate Icemen in the middle of battles.

There's also his budding relationship with Kitty Pryde. There's been some debate (at least on the Comic Vine Podcast) that there might be an age difference between the two. Perhaps it's not really much of one.

Cyclops

No Caption Provided

Cyclops went from being the greatest X-Man to pretty much their worst enemy. This is the guy that first came up with the idea for a covert X-Force squad and recruited X-23, despite Wolverine's wishes. He basically walked out on Maddie and their infant son when Jean returned from the dead. He later cheated on Jean with Emma during Emma's telepathic sessions. He encouraged Idie to kill during REGENESIS.

His recent actions in AVENGERS VS. X-MEN could be blamed on the Phoenix Force being a part of him. He turned on the last remaining member of the Phoenix Five in order to claim all the power for himself. He topped this off with doing an unthinkable act. Whether or not he's forgiven for being influenced by the Phoenix Force remains to be seen. (Maybe young Cyclops will take the place of present-day Cyclops).

Adjusting to the Future

No Caption Provided

It's been said that this team will remain in the present for a while. We will find out specifically at what point in the past they will journey to their future. We don't know how they can actually travel into their future since time travel in the Marvel Universe generally doesn't allow that. By them discovering what will happen, that changes what they know. Unless their memory gets wiped before they travel back, we're going to see some reality altering changes similar to HOUSE OF M.

This doesn't even include all the other crazy events in the Marvel Universe that has happened such as CIVIL WAR, SECRET INVASION, SECOND COMING, the deaths of friends and family, etc.

ALL-NEW X-MEN is definitely going to be an upcoming title to check out.

Tony Guerrero is the Editor-in-Chief of Comic Vine. You can follow him on Twitter @GManFromHeck. If his past self visited the present, he'd probably be pretty excited to see the job he'll get to have.

I like this idea alot. It will take alot of planning and care to make it playout correctly, but I will definetly check this book out. Excited for Marvel Now!, and a great jumping on point for less experienced marvel readers like myself.

It does not matter if the memory is erased or mot... It is a great premise for the x men. To see what has become of them and to deal with knowing what their actions become and have caused. There is potential for some very awesome stories here.... Totally looking forward to it!!!!!

G-Man I see you are drinking the Cyclops hater flavored kool-aid here. Everyone is painting Cyclops at the bad guy reciently. Yes he has had his judgement impared by the Phoenix Force but how come Jean always seems to get a pass for what she did as the Dark Phoenix but It seems like Cyclops is going to be held accountable for trying to fix the worlds problems when he had the power to do so. Also he did not force X-23 to do anything he asked her to join X-Force. I think restarting X-Force was the right decision at the time given the threats to Mutants that are out there, one only has to see the forces arrayed against the X-Men in Second Coming to know he made the right decision. As for encouraging Idie to kill that is pure bull. In Schism #3 he said and I quote "Do what you think you have to". While that is not exactly telling her not to kill anyone, he do not encourage her to kill. To be honest this scene was the victim of poor writing on Jason Aaron's part, of course the whole Schism storyline was poorly concieved and inplemented so its not surprising that the writing was not great as well.

I agree, man...

Painting Scott as a villain is such a cop out. The guy has been watching his race being wiped out ever since he was a young kid, and more and more he grew up to realize that other heroes didn't give a f*** (yeah, it might be because of crossovers being quite rare those days), only to hear that they were keeping their distance out of respect (AvX 1). He has done extreme things, but you can't deny the mutant kind is alive partly (and mostly) because of Scott. He might be crucified by a jury of his non-peers, but mutants know just how much they owe him, even if they can't forgive Scott.

All the things described about Scott in this article are spun 180 by bias, and even if comic book writting is stupid as s***, I still would like it not to be so.

I'm not alone!

Well I am curious what will happen and if they can accept what there future will be like and all that. I am hoping Jean does go nuts on Scott though I mean I never liked Scott to begin with but what he did on her I hope she doesn't act forgiving I couldn't i now that much.

I hope its interesting but I worry as well about how its going to work out.

I know, right? How about Scarlet Witch practically committing genocide? Or considering the countless times Wolverine has been brainwashed and went on killing sprees? And Professor((and Magnetos')) acts committed while under the influence of Onslaught? How about Magneto holding the world hostage using their very nuclear arsenal against them? Hank Pym creating Ultron and basing the robots brain patterns off his very own while he was mentally unstable? Hank McCoy killing many during Secret Avengers((mind you he was perfectly in a sane state of mind and was given orders by Steve Rogers of all people))? I could go on and on but my point is that many of the Marvel heroes have committed amoral if not villainous acts while under the influence of outside of their control and whether they were completely cognizant. I feel that if you're going to judge Scott then you have to judge everybody else who has been in ANY similar circumstance and trust me there's plenty whether or not bad writing is the culprit.A

And yet...was there a single thing untrue about what G-Man said? He just retold the events of the last few years. It's not biased. Most of those things occurred without the Phoenix force too.

PS- Wanda was possessed by the life force.

Good way to start our mornings. I was thinking about this the other day. I can DEFINITELY see Marvel replacing one of the current originals with an "All-New" version. If the ball was in my court, I would gear more towards Angel. The character has just really been picked and prodded in the past four years or so. Aren't they making Angel seem like he's a kid again anyway? Now that I am thinking about it, he has really been written differently across the board. This is the title I am looking forward to the most. I love the team in the book, love the concept and love the creative team as well. Can't wait.

I don't agree when G-Man said that Warren has lost his memory. Rick Remender has said time and time again that Warren is dead. And that this is a whole new being using Warren's body as a vessel. So I think that his experiance will be similar to Jean's in the fact that he has done terrible things and is now dead. It may even be harder for him being someone else is still running around in his likeness.

this COULD be good if they show some character development. Like what would YOU say to your future self, especially if they did not live up to what you had envisioned?

Would Hank McCoy be horrified to see what his self loathing turned into? What would his life be like if he never took the serum that mutated himself further? Or would he marvel at the accomplishments of this new world and his future self?

What would Warren feel knowing he would turn into ArchAngel at one point? Would he change his playboy ways or would he even know about his dark destiny? Maybe Him and Betsy could try to have a relationship?

Perhaps Bobby would realize his full potential seeing how little his future self has grown over the years, maybe the jokes would stop, stop playing the slushy snowman and become the hard edge Iceman he could be?

How about Jean? perhaps the most tragic fate of the originals, How would Marvel Girl handle a Wolverine making advances at her, or realizing her fate in this universe, would it inspire her, or destroy her?

And what of Cyclops? He could have been a looked at as one of the greatest leaders to mutant kind. People would mention Xavier, Magneto and Summers. But after the recent events, would he be considered Hero or Madman?

What would a young scot say to his fallen future self? would he understand or would he be ashamed off how far from "The Dream" he travelled

I think if these kind of questions are answered this should be a good series, but we will wait and see

I was kinda cheated when the original X-men run was suddenly canceled decades ago.

(Being an X-man fan back in those days was not easy!)

I hope this works out well, and that the writer(s) stay true to the original dream.

These are 5 true icons.

Handle with care.

Eh...tho I am enjoying the AvX arc as it's wrapping up, I'm not really looking foward to the whole time-travel thing coming up. Two Cyclops, Angels and Icemans etc just seems like it's going to convolute things even more in mutant land in MARVEL U imo

This sounds like an excellent idea. I've always wanted to see a story (even if it was Elseworlds and not canon) where the old Pre-Crisis characters returned and met their modern counterparts. (Infinite Crisis doesn't count.)

I get bringing Jean back this way, but why bring in the other four, it's just seems weird having two of each of these guys. Jean works because she's dead...ish, but the others just seem forced.

Also as for the age difference between bobby and kitty, there really isn't much of one, the characters sort of aged peanuts style, where most of the x-men stayed that same age since passing their college years, which proportional aging as fitting for the characters, and kitty just kind of... caught up. Even so, the age difference is less than when she was with colossus... I think, comics are confusing.

While that is not exactly telling her not to kill anyone, he do not encourage her to kill. To be honest this scene was the victim of poor writing on Jason Aaron's part, of course the whole Schism storyline was poorly concieved and inplemented so its not surprising that the writing was not great as well.

would've been more interested if this were more of a reboot so I can see the original x-men on their original adventures. I sadly cannot. Oh well. might look into this. Love their original costumes by the way. They're so much happier.

I don't really like the concept of having doubles of multiple characters in the same universe, but I will check this out.

slightly intrigued. Its a relatively original idea, which is rare for either big company. Heres hoping for no shenanigans.

Yeah, no thanks. The original 5 have to be about the most boring thing about the X-men. Not excited about this book at all, which is a shame given how incredible Gillen's UXM is at the moment.

This is the title I'm most excited about in the Marvel NOW. Hickman's Avengers is a probably a close second. But I love X-Men. I know it's love because I cannot explain it :)

I really don't fell this. They will some plot hole to make them forget all about the futur and then all this arc will be useless.

I really don't see the point of doing this if all will be back to the boring state after.
