Off My Mind: The New 52—What Happened to Wally West?

Is there a place for Wally in 'The New 52'?

No Caption Provided

With the new DC relaunch titles and redesigned characters, there are several that appear to have fallen off the radar. It is completely understandable that not every single major character will make their debut in the new September titles. Having the option of 52 new titles is daunting enough as it is. It would also be easy for some characters to get lost in the shuffle if too many debuts were made at the same time. If certain characters are getting revamps, the energy and focus should be placed on them.

Despite this, there are characters that readers and fans have been demanding to know about. There are several popular characters that have been benched and we're left wondering if there are any plans whatsoever involving them. One such character is Wally West.

Wally West wasn't the first Flash. He wasn't even the second. He may have started out as Kid Flash, the sidekick to Barry Allen but Wally soon proved to be more than a simply sidekick. With Barry Allen's sacrifice in 1985's Crisis on Infinite Earths #8, Wally stepped up to becoming the Flash and was the only Flash many readers have known for as long as they've been reading comics. After Barry's return, Wally began slipping into comic book limbo. The question remains whether or not he'll remain there in September's "The New 52."

Because Wally started his superhero career at an early age, that time and experience helped to make him a better hero. Along with everything he learned from partnering with Barry, Wally was also a founding member of the Teen Titans. From what little we've heard about the Teen Titans in the relaunch, it sounds as if the Titans we all know never existed. This is where some confusion sets in because we've heard that the Batman Universe will remain consistent. Whether or not Dick Grayson formed the team with Wally and the others remains to be seen.

At the end of his career as Kid Flash, Wally contracted a mysterious disease that would accelerate his death if he used his speed powers. During the battle which lead to Barry's death, Wally was hit by a blast of anti-matter energy which somehow cured him. In his new career as the Flash, Wally had more limitations than Barry. He wasn't as fast or powerful.

When Reverse Flash came along, he actually helped Wally get over a mental block he had dealing with his powers. Wally subconsciously felt he couldn't and shouldn't be as good or better than Barry. Discovering the existence of the Speed Force, Wally was able to do even more than before by using it to make himself faster and even could lend speed to others.

Wally was all about change and evolution. Again, this is a character we first saw as a kid that idolized the Flash. Now established as a bona-fide hero and member of the Justice League, writers took him even further. Wally married his long time girlfriend, Linda Park, something that very few superhero characters do. Not only did he get married, he and Linda had twins.

As with television shows where lead characters get married or have kids, this marked the beginning of the end for Wally. He and his family did leave for an alternate reality after Infinite Crisis due to the fact that their children were growing at an accelerated rate. When they did make their return, the kids, Iris and Jai, were preadolescent kids with speed powers. Wally took them out on crimefighting adventures much to the disapproval of the Justice League (and many readers).

No Caption Provided

Final Crisis marked the return of Barry Allen after 23 years. His return didn't necessarily mean the end of Wally's tenure as the Flash as both fought side by side briefly. Then Wally slipped out of the limelight. Barry worked to reestablish himself both in the superhero world and at his former job in the Central City Police Dept. Soon there was no sign of Wally. In Barry's new series, Wally made two appearances, one at a picnic and another at an intervention. Both barely qualified as apperances. He only had a couple lines and didn't even have his costume.

Again it's understandable that the focus and attention would want to be placed on the characters already announced to have new ongoing titles. I am super stoked to see what Francis Manapul and Brian Buccellato have planed for Barry Allen. If Barry is being reestablished for new and existing readers, would having Wally as the Flash just make things confusing? Is this the reason Dick Grayson is giving up being Batman and going back to his Nightwing persona? Is this why there's no sign of Cassandra Cain and Stephanie Brown?

No Caption Provided

Wally West and Barry Allen may have similar powers and costumes but there really isn't a reason both can't have ongoing titles. There are a couple Superman titles with one being set in his early days and look at how many different Batman titles there will be. Wally and Barry are not the same character. That gives an even better reason for readers to want to pick up two separate titles. They don't have the same personalities and would handle situations in different ways. For now we'll have to be patient. We'll have to keep reminding the powers-that-be that we will not forget these missing characters and will support them when the decision is made to give them their time in the spotlight. In the meantime, at least we have our back issues and trade paperbacks.

I think Barry Allen is a fine character, but I agree about them not bringing Wally west. Why? Is Dan Didio trying to prove that he's a hack or something (because he's pretty much leaving me convinced).

Honestly, I don't like that Wally's being pushed to the wayside anymore than anyone else around here.  The thing is, I like Barry too.  Ive said it before, and Ill say it again, Barry and Wally aren't interchangeable.
They have similar powers (obviously) and they exude the Everyman archetype but thats where the similarities stop.

Barry Allen is like Steve Rogers he is more stoic, very focused and introverted (because there should be more introverted superheroes)  The biggest complaint I hear about barry is that his personality is like balsa wood.  That's true, because everyone's personality was like that back then, everybody,  more people cared about the tights and fights than the actual person.

Wally West is more like Peter Parker, he really has fun with it, he loves being the flash and everything that comes with it.  He also has a strong sense of responsibility.

So yes, it does suck royally that Wally's not around.  Arguably, he's one of DC's greatest heroes.  I'm not worked up over it though, as a fan of the Marvel Family, I am used to seeing characters I like being benched.

However, I do have an idea why they're doing it. They're trying to streamline continuity for new readers, you need Barry for Wally's origin, not Wally for Barry's.  If a flash movie gets made, its going to be about Barry, not Wally.  It could always be worse, Wally's just not around, he could be dead or maimed or something.

Barry and Wally can co-exist.  He could take up a new name and costume.  Perhaps he and Donna Troy can start some kind of Justice League Academy for fledgling superheroes.  The Teen Titans don't have enough room in that giant T for everybody.

I'm not worried though.  Who knows what the writers have planned down the line, Wally will be back.  I just know it.

I grew up with Wally as my Flash but if they want to bring barry back, why can't Wally get his own comic like Dick? He could just come up with a new name. Take the impulse name or something. I guess we should expect this. I love Spoiler for a long time and I loved when she became Batgirl and would love to see a spoiler comic come out or at least have her with the birds.

Excuse my nerd raging to the matter but I feel for a matter as great as this, it's very appropriate. Have the staff of DC Comics completely lost their freakin' minds?!?! Of all the characters to leave in the dust, it's THE Wally West?! The character that gave a different taste, better philosophy and true meaning of Fast?! Chucking out Wally West is like chucking out the condiments of your favorite burger or sandwich leaving it bland and dry as all hell! Wally West was the one that truly rose the Flash superhero persona to where it is today and the Justice League's comical optimist in times of great hell. Wally truly is the CORE MEMBER of the Justice League! One of the few true top dogs of the Justice League! Barry may have been great back in the day, but his time has passed! If they wanted to bring attention to Barry so much, they should have done a series to commemorate his greatest successes and greatest failures as his life and time as the Flash in a auto-biography style set in the mid-20th century! Going as far as bring him back to be the current Flash will be the biggest mistake of this reboot because it will only screw up the origins and backgrounds of the Flash superhero persona! They will end up putting another superhero into the twilight zone where heroes and villains go when they don't have a consistent background or origin like Wonder Woman!

Barry's ok. But I grew up thinking Wally was Flash. I was but a puppy when Barry died. So simply put:  WALLY WEST, IS THE BEST!

Barry and Iris are not even dating? I think something inside me just broke. I don't know if you guys have noticed, but the Kid Flash in the TT covers looks awfully redhead; and if this is so early in the Flash's continuity that Barry and Iris aren't together yet.... I'm sorry I can't... if DC really goes that way.... I'm sorry I don't think I could take it.

Even if barry wasn't to stay dead. This lack of wally is just stupid.
TLDR: Wally west is #1

Wally, already the fastest flash (at least going 100% he is) has been the flash for over 20 years, he has Enchanted and entertained the modern generation, by being the flash not just in the comic books, but in the VERY Successful tv Series Justice league, and Justice League Unlimited.

And some pompous rich guy comes in and takes it all away? if he has so much power what's wrong with making a new proper Barry allen line of flash comics for his boring attitude. a comic that can be in the same time line as wally wests comic books and even occasionally team up! or even go one step beyond teaming up. forced to live in the same house (gasp, super hero sitcom!)

I've always been interested in the flash in general,  But when I've watched barry allen in Action in comparison, its rather lackluster. he's too serious, and fairly one sided. You always know what he will do next. with wally he has a youthful feel to him, and in regards to the Animated TV show he has a mischevious innocence to him, Using a wally like that can even bring about an interesting Duo sort of flavor. with barry being the more mature flash and wally (Not kid flash i hate that friggin costume) being the troublesome rival hero that barry tries to keep out of trouble.

Just random spurts of ideas.

I like Flash Point. I think it's an awesome story...but I hate that they seem so intent on writing Wally out of existence. For myself and many people my age who grew up with the JL and JLU cartoons, Wally West is THE Flash and canon and continuity has always supported him as the best Flash. Until Johns came in and worked his Geoffcons.

Couldn't say it better.
If Geoff didn't watch the character on Superfriends they don't matter to him. It sickens me that he not only get's paid to write what clearly amounts to Fan Fiction, but he also gets paid (damn well) for it.

Barry Allen is like disco. He had his time, he was important to the history of super heroes, and his influence can still be seen today... but he is way past his time and nobody wants him around now.
agreed x10 to the infinity!!! what exactly was the point in bringing him back anyway? just so some 80's child, i.e. geoff johns and more i'm sure, could have their favowite hewoes back? what a bunch of jerk offs.

at least Wally won't have to deal with any kids with super growth hormones anymore. seriously, who came up with that crap... i gotta stop before i start going on with everything that irritates me about the Flash series that went wrong... The Flash is one of my favorite characters, so forgive me when i say this, but Barry Allen needs to die and stay dead! Wally is the rightful flash who has revolutionized that character farther than where Barry ever took it. Pushing Wally to the side like that to the point of non-existence is no way to treat a hero of his caliber. as long a hero still lives, he fights for what's right... so tell me, What Would Wally Do???

Actually, the JSA aren't appearing, so they won't confwuse new readers with different versions of the Flash, Green Lantern etc. So the same applies to Wally.

The MOMENT Barry came back and replaced Wally, I stopped reading the Flash comics.

Batman and the Flash are the only DC characters I liked reading about, because they were the only ones who weren't totally one-dimensional.

It really doesn't help that Wally's Rogues just totally blew Barry's out of the water, so it looks like we are going to lose all them too.

It's just...replacing EVERYTHING that made the Flash interesting , and bringing back really bland stuff people were smart enough to ditch over 20 years ago.

They're not bringing Wally back even though in my opinion he made the Flash one of the most human characters in the DCU (even more than the Bats which is human to the core) because frankly this whole reboot is to make things simple for new readers. Putting multiple people with the same title in one suit over the years is not simple there's stories for each tie someone dawns the costume.

In all honesty, for the most part they could have killed Wally off and not much would change though, which is sad :(

With GL, I was glad to have Hal back at the forefront.  There is a greater legacy with Hal  (And of all the Green Lantern's from Earth, I've probably heard the least from Kyle too).  But at the same time I almost feel like the legacy of the beginnings of "The Flash" is with Barry, but the major future developments happened with Wally. In a way it was cool to have Barry Allen back but at the sametime, Wally had became my Flash.

Jim Lee probably wasted all his "90's Heroes Reborn" Magic before he could get to Wally. Couldn't fit him into some garish hand-me-down from Wildcats or Youngbloods, or his happiness just doesn't fit into the new "XTREME!!!11" DCU

The Flash has always been one of my favorites.  Just a B-squad kinda guy I suppose.  A Dynamic that seemed to work well for me was the enormous Flash Family.  While not the biggest Fan of Wally (I seem to like him more when he has "Issues"), I've never really liked that much at all ( he always felt like a bad Wally Xerox Copy )....

Will be interesting to see where Wally fits in the DCnU.  Still holding out hope for my JSA folks as well.

It would be a shame to lose Wally. Mark Waid's run on the Flash is one of the high points of DC in the 90's (not to mention it was followed up by a great run by Millar/Morrison). Having grown up with Wally as the Flash, I would probably count myself among those who will always think of him as THE Flash. That being said, it's interesting to have Barry back. Silver Age Flash stories were always very charming and Barry is a different kind of hero than many of the newer, younger metas popping up. Barry is uptight and straight-laced which makes him unique in modern comics. I hope we don't lose Wally but I'm glad Barry's here.

Has it been proven that Kid Flash is gonna be Bart in this reboot? Cause if not I've had theories of deagein Wally back into Kid Flash again (gettin rid of Bart entirely). They already seem to be deagin Babs to be Batgirl again, it really would not surprise me.

Honestly, if you had two characters sharing the same mantle, why couldn't you confine them to a separate title? And the fact that most DC comics nowadays have a little introductory box of the character in every issue, so you could tell who's who. Examples of how it could work:

-Batman--Bruce in Detective Comics and Batman Inc., Dick in Batman and Batman & Robin
-The Flash--Barry in The Flash, Wally in something like "The Flash: Fastest Alive" or something like that
-Green Lantern--Hal in the main title, John and Kyle in Green Lantern Corps, Guy in Emerald Warriors
-Legion of Super-Heroes--main team in the main title, new recruits in something like "Legion Academy"

It's THAT easy, people!!!

Its all Geoff Johns fault. I hate that guy. First he pretty much got rid of Kyle (I know thats not 100% true but go with it) and brought back Hal to the forefront in the GL books.  Thats one hero we grew up with moved outta the way by his predecessor.  Then he moved onto Wally.  He falt Barry was ALOT more interseting (get real) and shoved Wally outa the way for this bland character the readers of my generation have no attachment to.  We knew Barry as the guy who made the ultimate sacrifice.  Same goes for Hal and his redemption turned sacrifice.  Johns should leave awe inspiring climaxes alone.  Bringing back dead characters kinda takes away the epicness of their final moments.  I love Wally, and I want...nay, Need him back as the Flash.

Well in "Hell To Pay" Wally makes a deal with one of DC's Devils (at least Wally believes him to be the devil plus he does rule over a realm he calls hell filled with tortured souls), Neron, he gave up his and Linda's love for one another. The exception is this is actually even more terrible than OMD, the reason why? Well it's that it doesn't end there, Neron suffers after this love and it results in him loving all the tortured souls in hell and nurturing them by taking them out of their flaming pits and giving them water and..... eh..... talking baby talk with them. He then proclaims that the most powerful force in the universe is love and so he makes a deal with Wally and Linda to make everything back to before he resurrected the Rogues if they take their love back.

I would actually prefer the Hell to Pay story to OMD.   Mephisto takes Spiderman's marriage and poof the event is over.   We don't hear from this again with the implication that Pete's marriage to MJ was pointless and inconsequential.   HtP at least spins a story out of the devil bargain and the end result validates the characters and their love.   OMD spits on all the past character development while HtP reinforces it.

well i was hoping Dc would do  a "young justice" ongoing set in the past that had Dick Grayson (As Robin) Wally (as Kid Flash) Donna Troy (as Wonder Girl) and Garth (as Aqualad) on it to show how they became heroes...but i guess they aren't

@G-Man: they've said this will be the first time these Titans meet but they've also said that there may have been other teams operating as the Teen Titans before them

Thanks for catching me up on The Flash. As usual, you've managed to relate a ton of background information in a short read.

I too hope DC chooses to maintain two Flash titles. Either way, super heroes seem to always come back, and I suspect we'll see Wally West take center stage again some day.
