Off My Mind: The Future of Agent Phil Coulson in the Marvel Cinematic Universe

Is there still a place for him in future Marvel films?

Ever since Clark Gregg's Agent Phil Coulson made his debut in 2008's Iron Man, he's added quite a bit to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Coulson doesn't have any superpowers but has played an important role in the movies. The importance doesn't come from the fact that he's been the glue needed to bring the Avengers together by doing his part in the films prior to The Avengers. He may not have had a role in Captain America: The First Avenger but his enthusiasm towards the Captain in The Avengers more than made up for it.

Coulson became the everyman. He was the fanboy. In some ways, he was us. Coulson's character may have been a tad cynical in the beginning but clearly he wanted to believe in heroes. This is what we discovered as his character gained more screen time. Coulson added humor and heart to the movies. His presence made a superhero fantasy film a tiny bit more believable.

But what's next for Agent Coulson and Clark Gregg? His future has been up in the air with the question of where could his character go next? There will be some spoilers from The Avengers. Hopefully you've had a chance to see it by now as the worldwide box office has passed 1.3 billion dollars.

What happened to Agent Coulson in The Avengers was extremely unfortunate but necessary, in some ways. The team needed a reason to regroup and actually become a team. They needed something in order for them to live up to their name. New York City was being attacked and numerous civilian lives were at risk but the members needed that personal touch to give them the drive to get back on their feet and defeat the enemy.

Many of us watching the movie refuse to believe what happened. We all know that death doesn't have much meaning in comic books. Characters die all the time only to come back eventually through some miraculous incident. Couldn't the same apply to the comic book movies? The problem is, it's usually the heroes that are able to make their way back from the land of the dead. The civilian characters aren't usually as fortunate. It would have been cheesy but we could easily see an end scene where somehow, Coulson 'got better' in The Avengers. Despite the reshoot for the final after-the-credits scene, Coulson was no where in sight.

No Caption Provided

Since his final scene, there has been a bit of an outcry for Clark Gregg to return and one suggestion is by becoming part of the Vision. The Vision is the synthezoid member of the Avengers that had the brain patterns of Simon Williams, aka Wonder Man (who was dead at the time), which gave him his humanity. With all the heart Coulson's character had, who better for a mechanical character to have as the basis of his personality?

Except, Coulson becoming the Vision would just be a bit weird. It turns out even Clark Gregg isn't thrilled with the idea. He voiced his thoughts on the idea in a recent interview.

Vision is cool, but I would hate to be any A.I. life form. If I got to come back, I would need to still be somebody who could wisecrack, because my favorite part of the job was that if anybody was going to tease anybody about their diva superhero outfit or whatever, it would be me.

It seems unlikely that his popular character could just be killed off. As mentioned, his demise played a crucial role. But Marvel has already shown that they value the character.

In recent comics, Agent Coulson has gained a bigger presence in the pages of BATTLE SCARS and SCARLET SPIDER #6.

Agent Coulson is also part of The Ulitmate Spider-Man animated series. With S.H.I.E.L.D. involved with Spider-Man's training, Coulson is acting as the principal at Peter's high school in order to keep an eye on things.

No one ever really stays dead in comics. There are a couple exception but popularity often helps in getting writers to come up with creative ways to bring them back.

Of course there is one way to bring him back that has surely been thrown around. LIFE MODEL DECOY. They do exist in the Cinematic Universe because Tony Stark made a joke about them when trying to avoid a phone call with Coulson. Coulson could return as an LMD or the one that met his demise could have been one. The latter would be a better option as Clark Gregg has stated he doesn't want to return as a "any A.I. life form." It's possible that Coulson or Nick Fury sent on out to try to deal with Loki. The death could have been carried on in order to give the team the inspiration (or kick in the pants) they needed. Would anyone (us viewers) really be surprised if Fury let everyone believe Coulson was dead when it was really a LMD?

No Caption Provided

Agent Coulson may not be a superpowered character but he's proven to be an important part in the Marvel films. His comments and jokes help to let us know the filmmakers are having fun and not taking it all too seriously. When you try to bring comic book characters to life, there's always going to be that sense of disbelief needed to make the movie work.

With Coulson making light of certain things, it helps keeps us entertained and in the movie. He is still listed as being rumored to be in a Nick Fury movie on imdb. We'll have to keep our fingers crossed that they will find a believable way for his return.

So I've been thinking about where they could go with it and there are only so many options:

  1. Leave him dead: The age of Phil Coulson is over.
  2. New Coulson: Fill his role with another character like Maria Hill, Carol Danvers, or Sam Wilson.
  3. Robotic Coulson: Either the LMD idea, the Vision idea, or just make him like the movieverse version of Jarvis.
  4. True resurrection: Perhaps he reaches Thor'sValhalla for his glorious death, perhaps he's brought back through some quirk of the Cosmic Cube, or some artifice of magi-science common to superhero stories.
  5. No body, no death: Treat the death in Avengers as a bait-and-switch. Perhaps he was only mostly dead or something along those lines. If Captain America could be frozen in ice, maybe they took Coulson's "corpse" and put it under similar conditions.
  6. Not-Coulson Coulson: Maybe he returns but he's actually a shapeshifter or Skrull or something.
  7. Just a copy: They clone him or otherwise create a new Coulson that is not robotic and therefore rather different.

The only one of the above that I find in any way compelling is #2 or #5. I think the introduction of Maria Hill means they can push her into Coulson's role fairly easily, but I kept waiting for them to do #5 in the after-credits but they never did. If they tried to do any sort of casual bait-and-switch at this point it would trivialize his death in the Avengers but I think a "mostly dead" solution like the freezing, combined with a little "magi-tech" heal-juice could see a revived Coulson in a reasonable fashion. It would just have to happen on-screen and not easily. But if I can stomach that for the Winter Soldier (and that's what I'm hoping for) then I can take it for Coulson. Heck, maybe they could find Winter Soldier technology that helps them rebuild Coulson.

@ChrisBuster: That seems a little more like conjecture than anything.

I'd rather he stay dead, and Maria Hill rightfully take the stage. I find the LMD idea only a plot device to keep him alive.

It wasn't Whedon's idea to kill off Coulson. It was Kevin Feige's idea so Coulson could come back as Vision.

I don't see why it has to be something as complicated as a life model decoy, though that would be cool. No one seems to mention that we never physically saw coulson die. He passed out and fury stood up, but the medics were right there. Who's to say that they weren't able to save his life, and fury let the avengers think he was dead to give them the boost they needed?

It wouldn't be at all far fetched for him to show up in the next iron man movie with a shrug and cool new scar as explantation as to his miraculous recovery. Remember, no body, no murder.

It wasn't Whedon's idea to kill off Coulson. It was Kevin Feige's idea so Coulson could come back as Vision.

Did Feige ever get quoted talking about Vision? I know that's a popular theory but everything I've seen just has Feige saying that it would be "irresponsible" to have a film like the avengers without an emotional "toll":

Whedon: “In our first meeting [Marvel Studios President] Kevin Feige said, this is what we’re gonna do and I said, ‘Oh, but you have to go out there and tell everybody that it was your idea because this is going to get me so much shit. Because they are all going to be like, “Oh, he did it again!”‘ Whedon said. “It was stipulated from the beginning, and I completely agree that it was the right thing to do, and so did Clark, who said in the early days, when I was busy apologizing for it, ‘In a movie like this, with what’s going on if there isn’t some toll, it’s just irresponsible story telling.’” (source)

Unless it was a bait and switch, coulson should just stay dead... why do people want him back as the vision? wouldn't you rather see an avengers movie with ultron as the bad guy and vision as one of his "army." Coulson was funny and all but why make up all this BS with resurrection or LMD. In comics or shows when a LMD is killed you see the robotics inside... coulson was bleeding... it was an emotional moment in the film just leave him dead and add new characters. People die in comics all the time should we really make movies not have death?

If he doesn't come back as Vision, he needs to stay dead. Just saying that he was a Life Model Decoy is so damn cheap and irritating that I cannot put into words. It would give the whole last arc of The Avengers much less meaning.

It means that they declared him dead and declared his time of death.. Fury could have lied, but according to what he said, Colson died.

I know what it means, sorry, I meant wtf does that mean in terms of where Coulson is now?

Really? We're championing for the lack of permanency of death? Really?

Death shouldn't be frivolous just because some people can't handle seeing a fictional character go. If that's the case, why even bother writing the story?

I'm stuck in a rut here, part of me wants to see him back but another [bigger part] wants him to remain dead.

It really does just get corny once people start cheating death. Plus a lot of people will be pissed by having someone pull heart strings. Then again that's what Fury seems to be good at. (see it works either way)

...whatever happens, I just hope it makes logical sense ... PLEASE

NO!! STAY DEAD in the Movie.

I was shocked when they killed him and shock in movies is VERY HARD TO PULL OFF, plus it went with this take on Avengers.

The man is more powerful dead in the movie than he could ever amagine. His popularity and growth in other outlets is taking shape...so I say, stay Dead in the movie and continue to expand the character in other comic/anime ideas.

Keep him dead.

We could get out Coulson fix, if needed, in future films via recordings or flashback. He was awesome, but bringing him back would cheapen the entire premise.

Actually, if Loki turns up in future Avengers films, maybe he could put on a guise as Coulson to throw people off.

I believe he's dead, and it's sad but it's true. I think the movies are just gonna have to find another way to make it more light-hearted, I mean Iron Man can wisecrack just fine. Plus, it seems like an insult to the characters legacy. His death was the ultimate act of bringing the Avengers together. Just let him stay dead, so that he can leave behind his legacy and give the team a reason to remember what they're fighting for.

So basically, it's a bad idea to bring him back to life. It'd be disrespectful to the character to let that death mean nothing, when it's played up to be a powerful moment.

If I remember correctly, Fury tells coulson to 'get to the armory' - coulson goes and scans his eye and the door opens and we cut away and later he shows up with the Asgard Gun - He COULD have opened the door, activated a LMD, armed it and sent it to deal with LOKI - Unlikely, but thats how they could work a return.

-OR-

Remember that Fury lied about the Captain America Trading Cards and (who's blood was that?) - so he could have Coulson recovering somewhere and just not reveal it. When he announced that "They called him" [Doctors say he's dead] - it sounds phony over the intercom...?

Agent Coulson needs to remain dead. I know this is dificult to deal with in the comic book world but he died a heroes death. Bringing him back would seriously diminsh the sacrifice he made and make the word hero a little less important.

I want Coulson back. He was so quirky around Cap that you can't help root for him ( I know I'd start geeking out over just staring at Bruce Banner in the face, let alone Steve Rodgers.) While part of me wants him as Vision (maybe this time not an android but a cyborg, built in a similar way to the bionic man and bionic woman), maybe an LMD would be the realistic choice made for the film universe (since some of the things have been heavily edited anyways, like Thor not having his helmet and the Chitauri aliens versus the Skrulls, even though that was due to company ownership).

I still hold out hope for maybe a mix of the two, or else that Coulson was revived ala Morph in X-Men: The Animated Series, but this time with more abilities at his disposal. A nerd waking up to find out that he has super strength? That would be awesome to see.

He could be a good Vision, I'm instantly reminded of how he acted in the previous Marvel movies. Until the Avengers movie, any humor from him seemed unintentional. Like in Iron Man 1 when him and the SHIELD agents were going to enter that door, Pepper started wondering if it was some kind of high tech device that was going to open the door, only for him to reply "Something like that" before the boom. I could see Vision using the same kind of deadpan humor.

Making Coulson an LMD would be a serious cop out but not beyond the realm of possible when it comes to comic book deaths, especially in the movies. Being part of a Vision I don't think I'd be a real fan of since that would be screwing with an origin story I actually quite enjoy. Unless we have him be an LMD or we have him in prequel type situations involving SHIELD, then I don't really see how we can bring Coulson back into the fold. I do want him to be part of the cinematic experience though...he really grew on me since '08.

And LMD's were referenced (in a tongue in cheek way) during the first movie. Joss Whedon doesn't really do anything by accident. There's the chance that it was an Easter Egg for the comic book fans but also...there is the possibility that it was foreshadowing.
