Off My Mind: The End of The Amazing Spider-Man

The 700th issue will end the series and the question is what catastrophic event will fall upon Spider-Man?

Anniversary issues for comic books are usually marked by some major event in the lives of the characters involved. It has been revealed through the solicits that THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #700 will be the final issue of the series. Of course we know the series is likely to immediately return with a new #1 issue as part of the upcoming Marvel NOW! initiative bringing new creative teams to titles and jumping on points for new readers.

Spider-Man is Marvel's most iconic character. The series comes out twice a month and Dan Slott has been doing a spectacular job on the series. Yet he's recently mentioned several times he will need to "go into hiding" once issue #700 is released. What could the brilliant writer possibly have planned that would cause Spider-Man fans to gather pitchforks and torches?

No Caption Provided

This will remain a well-guarded secret but as the issue approaches, there are tiny possibilities that are surfaces with each new issue. We'll look at what (most likely) tragic event will fall upon Spider-Man that could anger those that love the character. There will be some spoilers from THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #694.

== TEASER ==

The Death of Spider-Man?

No Caption Provided

Despite comic readers' hatred of the gimmick of a comic book death, you can't argue that they still bring plenty of attention to a series through the media. If you've read recent issues, you know Spider-Man is about to be stuck in the middle of a "Goblin War." We've been seeing the original Hobgoblin ready to make his return to enact vengeance upon the current Hobgoblin, Phil Urich. Urich is proving to be more and more unstable and Kingsley won't be too happy. But the chances of Spider-Man being killed over their fight is minimal.

Plus Marvel already killed him in the Ultimate Universe.

Spider-Man's Identity Revealed

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #600
AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #600

The spell Doctor Strange cast that made everyone forget Spider-Man's identity (during One Moment in Time) has lost some of its strength. Carlie Cooper already managed to find out. Peter has been careless with how much tech he's been inventing for Spider-Man as Peter Parker at Horizon Labs. It wouldn't take much for word to get out that Peter has a continued association with Spider-Man because of all the recent gadgets plus his previously connection of taking pics of him.

No Caption Provided

If Spider-Man's identity doesn't get revealed in this current arc, it appears it might be happening in issue #698. The solicit here states that Doctor Octopus will discover "who Peter Parker really is." Although, it seems a little odd that it mentions Peter and not Spider-Man. Issue #699 again mentions knowing "Peter Parker's secret" and wanting vengeance. He will put out a call to other Spider-Man villains.

There's also the chance that Alpha will make a return. Most likely it could be in answer to Doc Ock's call. He was defeated by Spider-Man and faced humiliation at his defeat. There was mention that he could make his return and being an angry kid, he could easily make the wrong decision that could lead to the unintended death of his former mentor. Alpha had it all and had it taken away. In his final appearance, he showed he still had some strength when he was at his locker. He's bound to make a return. We just don't know if it'll be this soon.

With Doc Ock, his time is running out. He's about to die. Back in issue #600, he found out that the repeated blows to the head caused brain injury. As he unleashed his latest scheme and was defeated by Spider-Man, he was going to "do something great" with what time he had left. He popped up from time to time and even caused a worldwide attack in the Ends of the Earth arc. He wants vengeance against Spider-Man but does that mean his death?

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #694
AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #694

The chances of Spider-Man dying or getting killed doesn't seem too likely. We all know it wouldn't and couldn't last. Even if Spidey was killed, it wouldn't be forever.

Death of Aunt May?

No Caption Provided

In issue #694, Aunt May was injured during Alpha's attempt to win the fight the Avengers were involved in. Perhaps this was a sign of what's to come. We have seen the death of Aunt May before, which turned out not to be Aunt May (long story). Even though she's married J. Jonah Jameson SR. and was ready to live her life in Boston, she's still a major part in Peter's life. The two even co-starred in AVENGING SPIDER-MAN #11. Fans would indeed be upset if she were to die but I don't know if it'd be enough for Dan Slott to go into hiding.

Death of Mary Jane?

No Caption Provided

Despite having their marriage wiped out, Mary Jane still spends a lot of time with Peter. While Peter was dating Carlie, there were strong indications that she still had deep feelings for him. How could she not after everything they went through. Just because they are no longer married after One Moment in Time doesn't mean she stopped loving him. The same goes for Peter. He may have dated Carlie and hooked up with Black Cat again prior to that, but Mary Jane is still his rock.

Mary Jane has a nightclub now. She now has a little more purpose compared to being stuck sitting around being just another supporting character for Spidey.

Many readers are still feeling the sting of the marriage being dissolved. If Spider-Man's identity becomes public knowledge once again due to the magic spell wearing off, the marriage would have ended for nothing.

If Mary Jane ends up being a casualty in whatever plan Doc Ock has cooking, again, fans will be furious. Many still feel Peter and Mary Jane deserve to be together. Killing her off just means that Peter may never find happiness. Having her make some noble sacrifice to save Peter or someone close to him, thus turning the tables on her role, would give Peter another new level of guilt to try to cope with.

Spider-Man Changed Drastically

No Caption Provided

A final theory could mean the Spider-Man we know will be gone with AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #700. He could be severely injured (like in the M2 Universe with Spider-Girl) and have to either retire or gain some sort of artificial limb.

Along with this is the thinking that the Marvel NOW! teaser "Superior" is about Spider-Man's new book. Instead of being drastically changed due to an injury, his powers could be drastically amplified. The teaser doesn't mention any creators and only has a January 2013 date. This fits if ASM is ending on December 26.

What could possibly make Spider-Man "Superior" though?

In a recent interview with Marvel, Slott said the following:

Is it? It’s also going to be a thrilling tale of heroism! This is gonna be one that I know full-well, when people close that comic, there’s going to be a large portion of the fans out there whose next action will be to soak their torches in the gasoline, reach for the matches, sharpen their pitchforks, put on their night-vision goggles and go looking for me. “Why, why have you done this!”

What does all this mean? That doesn't sound like something that would make Spider-Man "superior."

Something big is coming. Marvel is taking advantage of Spider-Man's 700th and final issue (before relaunching the series). This is the time to do something memorable. After fifty years of Spider-Man stories, it's okay to shake things up a little bit. Of course we don't need some big horrific event just to make a great memorable story. We don't need to see another death in comics. There are other ways to tell good stories. Slott has been doing a great job on his Big Time run. Let's hope it ends in a spectacular way without resulting in the death of anyone.

Gwen's probably coming back. I mean the Jackal has been popping up at random so I feel like it's bound to happen. Not a clone though, the real Gwen. By magic or something, Slott never really likes explaining why things happen they just do in his world. She's going to have to own up to everything she did in Sins Past. At least that's where I'd go with that. She's really got some explaining to do. Also, Ramos has been itching to draw her.

Spider-Man is one of Marvel's flagship titles and you don't throw a wrench in your character design you've been developing for over 50 years by having him break character and kill anyone after all these years. The homicidal Spider villains roster is pretty full as it is. (So that's actually one of the dumbest notions that people keep suggesting.)

Spider-Man may still be ransacked and made to LOOK-like a villain, but not likely.

Reveal of his identity - not going to happen - been there done that - not dynamic enough at this stage of the game.

May dying - yeah - well seems like we've done that before too.

New powers - For redundancy sake no & there is real problematic issues that powers can have with altering one's perception of the individual - so I'm going to say definitely NO.

Personally, I think the big shake up is going to be from someone we haven't seen in a while or have all but forgotten about, but has the power to make a huge influence in his life. - Best Bet - Norman Osborn - How better to end the series than by the hands of his greatest nemesis. Osborn was right all along although some what over zealous and Peter is now working with Norman to set the world right after the events of AvX. Like everyone else merely speculation but its fun.

So what if? ... Spider-Men was a test for what is going to transpire in 700? Doc Ock gets his revenge of sorts by transporting Peter back to the Ultimate Universe wherein he is seemingly trapped with no hope of return. Eh - Who knows?

Slott knows and I'm sure something new and interesting will come out of it regardless of what they do.

I was thinking about this some more and what if a villian forces Peter to kill someone to save a large group of people. Say he is trapped in a room with no way out and it is strong enough that he could not break out. Now in front of him there are 2 screens, one is a random person cooking themselves dinner but is in Miami or some other distant local Peter could not get to even if he could not break out of the room. On the other screen are pictures of several explosives attached to the main support structures of a building or bridge in New York city. Peter gets a choice press button one and the single person gets gased to death, it will be painless and quick, or he can press button two and the explosives will detonate. If he does nothing both events will happen and just to show Peter they are serious they some real time event like a murder or high speed chase that can be confirmed on the local news channels. They give Peter 10 min to push a button. Just to spice thinge up the there are cameras set up on the target with explosives and he realised that at that time of day there are several people inside that he knows.

I know this sounds like a pretty elaborate and unrealistic set up but what if he was forced to kill an innocent person for the greater good. How would that affect Peter and would it change him. It could be a good cliffhanger and provide motivation to get the person that set him up to do that in the future.

Also, to anybody suggesting they might replace Peter with Miles in 616... the ending of Spider-Men really implied to me that 616 Miles is a bad guy. The look on Peter's face is a look of horror, not merely surprise.

Things I will not be okay with:

  • Killing Peter.
  • Replacing Spider-Man. Already done in one universe.
  • Killing any character for the sake of emotionally affecting Peter. We already know that his attitude has been affected the death's he's seen. Doing it again won't change anything.
  • Resurrecting Gwen Stacy.
  • Revealing Peter to the public

Things I will be completely disinterested in:

  • New powers.

Things I would absolutely love:

  • Peter kills somebody on purpose. Perhaps Alpha or Ock.

That's all I've got for now.

"Of course we don't need some big horrific event just to make a great memorable story."

My exact words to the existence of One More Day.

Maybe they'll finally break the deal with the devil?

Or Mephisto reveals that MJ has been his wife since OMD and takes her away with him. Considering he wanted Thor not to interfere with a plan of his and he was putting the moves on Magma for a plan, it wouldn't surprise me if he manipulated everything behind the scenes in OMD just to have MJ... better than just erasing their marriage just to take away their happiness yet totally sucking in the story department.

Oh wait... Doc Ock related... Doc Ock attacks Peter's home and kills May?

Part of me wants to laugh at this. Why? Didn't they decide to end Amazing Spider-Man years ago in the 400's? Give it a few years and viola, Amazing 701.

watch they

A.) kill off Aunt May, have some villain come in and tell him he 100% truly is the clone and always has been and the real Peter Parker died long ago which drives Mary Jane crazy and she ends up pleading to be killed and succeeds with the help of a symbiote villain that then uses her death to torture Ben (spiderman) with. Alpha will feel bad for his past mentor and will take over as Spiderman (his cosmic powers will adjust to giving him spider abilities) Ben Riley from all the twists and turns goes crazy and tries to become Green Goblin and ends up killing himself.

B.) kill off Doc Ock but not before he traps Peter Parker (now knowing his secret identity) and fuses new bionic limbs to him with a chip that over rides his brain and can take control of his body as Doc Ock for temporary periods of time.

C.) Kaine kills and takes over as the new Spiderman and replaces Peter without anyone knowing.

D.) Daredevil takes over as Spiderman bc Spiderman is killed.

E.) Slott undoes everything that has happened since One more day. As aunt May dies, the spell will grow weaker bc she is the key to the spell staying in tact. When she dies either

1. Peter and Mary Jane remember everything that was forgotten but May is still dead.

2. Everyone remembers everything that was forgotten and Peter is now on the run with Mary Jane (or she could be killed whatever) from all his villains

3. right as May dies everything in Peters life goes right back to the moment that May was dying in One More Day. May dies like she was originally supposed to and Peters life has a new starting point from there.

All I see is that '' Oh DC Rebooted themselves ! We must do it too ! '' Only problem is....we still don't have a clear clue on how the new 52 fit in with past stories....each week we get more and more plotholes and ridiculous changes that destroy a chracter trait.

If they want this Marvel Now to be successful...don't try to go Over the Top with it and use some consistency dammit ! I highly doubt a 'drastic change' would bring more people than you lose. Sure the shock value will effect them but after it wore off... it will only feel like '' Well, what's the point of that ? ''...

Hell I would love for them to bring Spider-Girl back and give Peter a breathing room if they desire...at least that would be an innovative way to handle a Main series.

I am also quite concerned over the statement as it is there to Rile up the fans...instead of focusing on the story...which is a really bad way to go. It kinda worries me that the 700th issue will be there to get some cheap reactions from fans rather than being an actual , compelling end.

After experiencing OMD , I am always skeptical about these changes because I can't trust the editors who can justify their BS like that. And the way they set up the scene for 700th...it doesn't give me much hope. Hell after Avengers Vs X-men... I can barely think what ''positive'' ideas left in their heads other than Misery and suffering.

All I can say... They better make this Marvel Now worthwhile.

I like the idea of him being forced to kill a villain and going into a depression over it. Getting the boot from the Avengers, FF etc. .. Becoming an alcoholic, being less and less 'careful'. Then Tony helps him through it or something.

Though I hope not about that alcoholic part.. I've been thinking about a comic series myself and that's a similar idea to something I've been thinking about for my own potential character.

No longer the Amazing Spider Man. The Superior Spider Man! I'm interested to know what Marvel NOW will take the Marvel superheroes, so far I only collected Ultimate comics spider Man and Spider Men. If this is a ploy to be like the Ultimate franchise I can't help but feel it might fail. We'll just have to wait and see.

Alpha becomes New Spider-Man? No Way! He is nothing like Peter. Spider-man with tentacles? Seriously? Weak. Kill off a major character - IT'S BEEN DONE. (to death)

I think the whole Spidey goes outlaw could work and really makes the most sense and most likely scenario. He finally kills a villian and he is given the boot by the Avengers, FF etc. It would really change the character and shake things up and REALLY PISS FANS OFF!

I think another great scenario, which would be VERY BOLD and interesting is if Peter hung up his web for reals. He could marry Mary Jane and ride off into the sunset. MARVEL ONE could then jump like 15 - 20 years in the future and Peter's and MJ's son could take up the Spider-man legacy. Aunt May will have passed but you could still have all the same characters - just 20 years older. JJJ crustier than ever! Then Peter could still be instilling his ideals into his son. I think fans would buy it because you still have Peter around and he could always swing back into action - just as old classic Spider-man. Plus what's great, there would be no going back from this so fans couldn't revolt and say we want the REAL Spider-man back, it would be a effective reboot.

Of course, the only problem is it would seriously mess with the continuity of the rest of the Marvel Universe as Spider-man would be in his own future timeline. Less they just kind of said - screw continuity.

I like Dan Slott myself. I'm sure he will take the book in a great in a new direction.

It would be interesting to see Spider-Man kill a bad guy or two. Maybe murder Kingpin and Hobgoblin.

Punisher and Daredevil could witness it. And one of them could say. "But Spidey you are a hero."

Which Spider-Man could reply, "I'm a what?" He webs a gun, grabs it and shot Kingpin strait in the head and then swings away. Punisher and Daredevil are shocked.

Daredevil: What just happened? What happened to Spider-Man?

Punisher: He grew up Devil. He grew up.

And so begins a new saga for Spider-Man.

The Brand New Day pseudo-reboot a while back pissed me off to the point that I haven't read Spider-Man since. I can empathize with the desire for a return to "classic" villain of the week Spider-Man comics and making easier for new readers to jump in, but it threw away SO much narrative and character development that I just couldn't stand to read it anymore.

Is it worth picking ASM up again and powering through to the current issue?

I would be totally willing to jump onto this issue with Spidey if absolutely NONE of what you suggested happened in this issue. Not that they aren't great ideas, but I want a bold and fresh thing to happen that would make me drop the darn book upon reading it. As they say, nothing is worth doing unless done right after all. Let issue 700 go out with a big bang and kick NOW into gear then.

Just don't kill mary jane. Also I don't know about making Peter life more miserable with another tragedy, dude already suffered enough, I do like the idea of his secret identity being revealed again. Lets be honest, everyone already knows that peter parker has some connection to spider man, his friends and family already are targets of super villains ALL THE TIME, just get it over with..... AGAIN.

Or do something completely new and off the chain, but please oh god don't kill another character just to make peter more emo.

I think Dan Slott is a bright minded writer...he knows Death in a Comic Book is not a brave and life changing event ...nothing so shocking and disruptive after years and years of resurrections (we are told the Ultimate Universe is different...we'll see: there is time to be disappointed)

I think he has something else in mind....a real change

Peter to become a Villain or to gain a completely different sets of powers would do if that becomes permanent: maybe he will become the next Goblin ...... Brave ,shocking, life changing...

I wish that I could have more faith in this new "Superior" venture...

But, I'll bet it will suck.

Between the "Youngbloods" and the "Suits", D.C. and Marvel are letting the monkeys loose and there is gonna be POOP everywhere!

Duck!!!!!

The Return of Gwen Stacy.

Do it.

After Sins Past wasn't retconned!? Gwen must never return until SP is retconned NEVER!

I thought that the retconning of Sins Past was implied with bringing back Gwen Stacy. I completely agree with both of you.

So much hate going on. Sheesh. I've been digging the stories lately. But I don't want a shocking death. And we could all be completely wrong in assuming that's what'll happen.

@churrific: Have you seen the full image? It's pretty sweet.

He will get Doc Ock's arms--forcing him to leave Horizon Labs and to have a public identity. But he will be more spider-like----a Superior Spider-Man.

Haha, I'd actually like to see that for a while. He truly would be the Spider-Man in a new way too.

With regard to the recent Spider-Men mini series, wouldn't the more reasonable assumption be that a 616 Miles Morales would be written in to be a short-term replacement for Peter?

Random thought, Aunt May or Mary Jane somehow die causes Peter Parker not to be Spider-Man. OR The whole Clone Saga thing goes down again.
