Off My Mind: Spider-Man Gets New Abilities to Survive Spider Island

This could be the biggest and most important battle in Spider-Man's career.

No Caption Provided

The Spider-Island story arc has officially started and already things aren't looking good for Spider-Man. Over the past couple months, we seen snippets of residents of New York City gaining spider-powers. This was all part of a plan set in motion by the Jackal (and a mysterious woman). More and more, New Yorkers found themselves with great power and the results were mixed. Some have decided to use the power for good while others are using them to cause chaos.

Since Spider-Man has had his abilities for about half his life, you would think he has mastered them by now. Just because he'll find himself facing people with his same powers doesn't mean they'll be on even ground. Giving two people the same tools doesn't mean the novice will be able to accomplish what the expert can.

Although when fighting against Spider-Woman, who was under the influence of Mandrill's pheromones, Spider-Man was getting his butt kicked. Why? Spider-Woman has similar powers and Peter may have had his longer but she also has a different kind of experience. Being trained by both HYDRA and SHIELD, Jessica Drew knows how to fight and doesn't have to only rely on her powers.

With Spider-Man recently losing his spider-senses, what can he do? Learn Kung Fu!

== TEASER ==

There was a time when it felt like all characters knew karate or Kung Fu. Coming out of the success of Kung Fu movies in the 70s, it was a natural progression that the fighting style made its way into comics. We've seen characters in training sessions many times and hand-to-hand combat is essential. Heroes can't only rely on their superpowers. Knowing how to fight is essential as well.

No Caption Provided

Why on Earth should Spider-Man need to learn Kung Fu? Spider-Man's always faced incredible odds. I remember being impressed way back in Secret Wars #3 when he took on the entire X-Men and Professor X. Besides the super-strength and crazy agility, Spider-Man has had his spider-senses to assist him for years. He could be in a room full of opponents and his sense would warn him of any coming blows or attacks. With the loss of them, he's just a super-fast, strong and agile hero who could still get suckerpunched from behind.

Now finding himself faced against a horde of spider-strength foes, he's actually at a disadvantage. We've seen some of the infested actually possessing spider-powers that Spider-Man doesn't have, such as natural webbing. Spider-Man didn't have unique powers before and now all of New York is gaining spider-powers.

No Caption Provided

As Julia Carpenter, the new Madame Web, has pointed out, the trials that Spider-Man is going through and will have to face will only make him a stronger hero. He's taken his powers and abilities for granted for far too long. We saw some adjustment in trying to cope with the loss but there should have been more. Shooting webs and swinging around safely should require loads of care and precision. On top of having to fight against opponents with similar powers, when this is all over, Spider-Man will have evolved to an even more formidable hero.

Kung Fu and Karate were always the answer when heroes needed to learn hand-to-hand combat. Imagine what those abilities can do when backed by Spider-Man's super-strength and agility. It might be unnecessary and unless he keeps up with it, he won't become a karate expert over night. Villains these days are becoming more and more deadly. Spider-Man needs all the help he can get. He has been creating more tech items at his dayjob in order to give him more of an edge. What it comes down to is Spider-Man with Kung Fu abilities is more interesting that Spider-Man with a bunch of gadgets. Using tech is too easy. It's cool once in a while to see what kind of technological toy he could whip up for himself but we all would rather see Spider-Man use his fists against his foes.

Spider-Man will most likely re-gain his spider-senses someday. They can't be gone forever. We also know that Spider-Island will be resolved and the New Yorkers will lose their new powers. If gaining a new fighting edge means he needs to endure this time of difficulty, it will all be worth it in the end when he's moping the floor with his enemies.

@FadeToBlackBolt: kung fu is about mastering your own form, the body that you have, and not overreaching it. it absolutely fits peter parker's philosophy and moreover his longtime progression and mythology.

Spider-mans new techniques (Way of The Spider FYI) aren't the focus of the story Spider-Island, it's NY being infested by Spider powers in a plot by the Jackal and a mysterious female figure (whom I'm betting is a Gwen Stacy clone), for those not reading.

I'm somewhat surprised by some of the user complaints about his training though, because more often than not, and from a few of you objecting, I've read the opposite opinion, that Peter should develop some better fighting skills, noting a few times people saying Steve should train him, Wolverine, ect, especially after we saw the hard trained alternate universe Spider-Man from What If? Spider-man Vs Wolverine.

Personally i think it's a good thing. While true that Peter has almost always managed to topple his opponents, it was not do to his versed fighting style, which is actually unorthodox. Peter generally takes a lot of lumps in his fights, and suffers a lot of losses ( Gwen Stacy, Madame Web, and Mattie Franklin can attest to this ) as a result of not being far enough ahead of his enemies, and wins in the end through sheer perseverance. This progression into a better form makes much sense to me, given him now fighting droves of opponents that share his Other power set, his being an active member of the Avengers and FF, and his resolution to ensure that no one dies anymore when he's involved (being the case is usually the opposite, or at least someone gets hurt, something destroyed, ect). Sadly too much of this was covered in FCBD Amazing Spider-man as another user stated, and a lot of people must have missed it. (there was a very important and well written reason he lost his Spider-sense to begin with, in ASM#654). Also noting that there's some crafting here carried over from Avengers and Fear Itself: Iron Man 2.0 involving Shang-Chi, and seemingly moving into what's next for him, Iron Fist and The Immortal Weapons. Marvel overstated in their Con interviews that what comes next is directly lead to by Spider-Island, Fear Itself, and Schism.

Dan Slott is a god send to this series (re-reading the entire Ren and Stimpy load along with this, mucho enjoy), and it's pulling in as one of the best written Marvel comics for me right under FF. He takes wild extreme story idea's and weaves them intricately and with class, all the while paying attention to both the core of the main character and his heroic ends, as well as never leaving anyone else in the cast behind in the character development department. Combined with Ramos's contributions, whom fit's Spider-man like a glove, Spider-Island has already got me thirsty for more.

I ♥ Spider-Island!

@bookerman20: The Other did nothing but make Spider Man a glorified vampire hunter.  that entire story line was a slap in the face of spider man fans.  hell, all of Scwyzinke...however the hell his name is spelled run was a slap in the face.  Spider man didn't get his powers by a freak accident, no, it was fate.  He has been chosen to fight a long line of spider vampires.  come on, that whole thing was ridiculous.  Let's give him a stinger (stake?  really) and have him now have organic webbing (because you know the movies and all).  I don't get why that series is held up to the acclaim it is.  They quickly forgot about everything it did, and for good reason.  At the end of the day, it was a joke, the writer is a hack, and the entire thing did nothing but attempt to turn Spider Man into freaking Buffy.

Spidey's learning martial arts? Good. He needs better training, and a few one off lessons with steve rogers don't qualify. If Shang Chi's training him, all the better (Skill trumps power).

He lost his spider-sense entirely a few issues back.

Did he?  I had to research this a little, because I haven't had money for comics lately, but apparently, Peter built a "spider-sense jamming device" to use against the Spider-Slayers, only to find that it affected his own spider-sense as well.

But earlier commenters have pointed out that Spidey has found his spider-sense useless in the past, when battling other spider powered characters.

So, did Peter's gizmo really jam his spider-sense?  Or does an entire island of spider-powered people just cancel it out for him, until Spider-Island is resolved?

I always felt that Spider-Man was always a brains over brawn type character. I'd rather see him resolve Spider Island by outsmarting everyone rather than outfighting.

1.  Spiderman needs his Spider sense back NOW.  If they want, they can even devote more time to exploring it.  But he needs it... otherwise he's like Captain America in the 90s when his powers would mysteriously go away... kind of lame.

2.  I hope not everyone's spider powers go away.  Sure, I want MOST of the powers to go away... but it'd be cool if a few stuck around, mutated and immune to the cure.  MJ, for example...

This could be the biggest and most important battle in Spider-Man's career?

answer: No it's a cheap gimmick to sucker people into reading Spider-Island. Spider-Man has again some dramatic life altering moment and yada yada his powers are fading. Yada yada somehow others have gained his skills. Yada yada he trains and hones his body and skills. Bla bla bla blaaaa. Mostly likely when he's feeling down and not concentrating. His powers are lot less. KInda lame to come up with the notion after so many years. That Spider-Man needs to learn a martial art. It's kinda a mandatory requirement for a superhero. Dammit he's an Avenger wouldn't that be i don't know kinda normal to have like a weekly sparring night with Captain America or Wolverine? Again Marvel FAIL!

Okay I HATE that they got rid of his Spider-Sense.  That was the entire BASIS of Spider-Man.  That's like taking away Wolverine's claws.

Sure, he's got all his secondary powers like strength and agility, but the Spider-Sense is what made him, well..Spider-Man.

As for fighting style, he already has one.  It's called "Freestyle".  He's been fighting for years and years and years.  Spidey already KNOWS how to fight.  Experience beats out training, hate to break it to ya.

OH FOR GOD'S SAKE. Spider-Man doesn't need to learn martial arts, he's developed his own method of fighting, which incorporates his Spider sense, how about you ****ing bring that back instead of all this useless crap?   I love Dan Slott, but wtf man?
If you read the article, it is said that Spiderman did infact lose his Spider sense, so that style of fighting will be nerfed hard to the ground as it utilize the Spider sense the most. And, he should at least learn some Martial arts not just Kung-fu. Might as well, use Jijutsu or Hapkido.

I did infact see that. But, I thought you were joking/ being sarcastic. But, whatever. My point still stands that in this current situation he really needs an alternative.

@dondasch: I think Batman's a couple hundred steps up from Wonder Woman.
Personally I like that he no longer has Spider-sense it was completely illogical.
He doesn't have compound eyes therefore he can't have spider-sense

@CATPANEXE: Hey, Cat', thanks for the Spoiler fill-in.  I think that can be explained away though.  It's about a year before Spider-Island started, but I could see Marvel falling back on "Marvel time" again, and saying the detonation was the catalyst for Spider-Island, thus Peter didn't really lose his spider-sense, but simply found himself in the midst of a city full of spider powered people, so it didn't work.  ...Reaching, I know, but it's at least comic book plausible. lol

@AmoralBatman: I don't know about the whole compound eyes/spider sense scenario, but I disagree that Batman is a couple hundred steps up from Wonder Woman.  Batman is one of the top tier martial artists in the DC Universe, but Diana cannot and should not be overlooked.  While it is unclear as to what specific types of combat training she has received while on Themyscira, remember that she was able to practice it repeatedly for hundreds if not thousands of years prior to coming on the world scene.

I don't understand why they took away his spider-sense, to make him more vulnerable? 'Cus it's not like other people can beat him, oh wait, yes it is. So basically they've just made him weaker. His Evolve or Die powers should still be there, but they've only appeared like once or twice.
Since when have other people been able to beat Spider-man? He's beaten the hulk, The entire squad of the avengers, The X-men, And all of his bad guys, well, he's turned them all into F'ing jokes , (the kind he still cracks while fighting them) I hate Spiderman, because he is unbeatable. I hate the hulk for similar reasons, but this isn't about him.

@dondasch: I'm not attempting to dismiss her. I'm merely trying to say that although she may be proficient in her own style of combat, it is but one style.
Batman has studied countless styles and has probably analysed and studied the fighting style of the Amazonians. Im not trying to deminish her own skill but rather emphasize Batmans superiority.

Amazing how people can turn a topic that should be about Spider-Man and Spider-Island into a discussion about Batman? Anyway: I 'm sure that he'll get his Spider-Sense back eventually, meanwhile just enjoy the ride Dan Slott 's taking us on. I mean it kind of does make sense that he should learn martial arts. Plus when his Spider-Sense comes back, he'll be able to combine this with his training.

Ok,this is my first post,so go easy on me,and hello to all.I gave up reading comics after a long time of reading spidey and certain X titles a while ago.As far as I've seen,Spider-man was always credited with having his own perfected fighting style, given how he's so much quicker, more agile etc than even a peak human I always had to question how the likes of the Taskmaster had copies his moves, they were sort of specific to his unique physical build up,limb elasticity and utilising his Spider-sense.I get what everybody says about training and what not,but if you've got your own style based on being 15 times quicker than everyone else, for the most part, technique goes out the window.Plus,he's always holding back.
