Off My Mind: Smallville's Final Season - What Should Happen?

It's confirmed that the tenth will be its last season.

It should be no surprise that the CW announced that next Fall's tenth season of Smallville will be the last for the show. The question is, what should happen and when in this last season? In other words, when will we actually see Superman?

No Caption Provided
If you watched the finale to the ninth season a couple weeks ago, you know there was a sort of nod or hint towards Superman's future.

The whole premise of the show was to focus on Clark before he became Superman. You'll probably agree that he should have become Superman seasons ago. My biggest gripe about the show is all his friends and now co-workers at the Daily Planet know Clark and recognize his face without the glasses he'll eventually wear. Also, Lex was his best friend for several seasons. The day Clark starts wearing glasses and Superman makes more public appearance than his "Blur" persona, how could people not recognize that Superman is Clark? This could work if they went the John Byrne route and had Superman constantly move his face at super speed so it always came out as blurry in photos and on camera. Again the question is, will we actually see Superman in the final season?

We always figured the show would end with Clark becoming Superman. As the show went on, Clark started using his powers more and more and in bigger ways. Eventually we got a pseudo-version of the Justice League and just saw the Justice Society. Yet Clark still hasn't suited up himself. The show's creators were always firm on their "no tights, no flight" policy. When they left the show, that's when we started seeing other characters in tights. Should Clark follow this trend before the season ends? It might change the focus of the show but most of us have tired of Clark's dance around the matter. Would the show still work if Clark decided to suit up finally? I think we can only stand seeing him wear a blue t-shirt with a red jacket for so long. His black/matrix look isn't much better.

It makes sense that the final scene of the final season should have Clark suiting up for the first time. After nine seasons, I almost want to say forget that. Let's see Clark as Superman now. Yes it will change the dynamic of the show. What do they really have to lose? It's the last season. Time to take some risks and give the fans what they want.

That brings about another question, do the viewers want to see the costume? Notice I used the word "viewers" there. We have to assume that a majority of the viewers don't actually read the comics. That's just how it goes with television and movie viewers, they out-number us comic book readers. Despite the show being about Clark Kent and his superpowers, would they actually buy him wearing red and blue tights? I want to say yes. The Justice Society/Absolute Justice episode was big on ratings. I say let's throw out the original plan of "no tights, no flight" and finally see Superman on the small screen once again and before the season ends.

Give Superman his costume (or something resembling it). Make Batman (or Bruce Wayne) a main character. Put Wonder Woman in it. Darkseid (or Uxas) in it. And the final episode should be the JLA.

They actually have mentioned Gotham in the show, I believe it was the episode about Lex's past where him and Oliver accidentally killed that kid and he started killing their friends one by one or something like that :P

The first episode I saw was the Lana was a witch episode and I stayed away for 2-3 more years till my buddy said it was pretty good. The last few seasons though have gotten much better, less cheese (although they still have the stupid love interest episodes with teeny drama every once in a while) and with more comic book tie in. I could see them moving to a JLA after this and that would be quite interesting, although the lack of the Bat would suck. "
It's still hooky, and that's dues to the acting and writing. It's painful. I swear, the scene where Clark's giving his speech to the JSA and JLA in this season finale, I cringed. You could play a drinking game with how many times the actors turn away from the person they're talking too, stop mid sentence, then turn back to them "dramatically". Or how many times someone gets a mild tap on any part of their body, and falls unconscious! I, mean, I would suggest it, if I wasn't terrified of the idea of people dying from severe alcohol poisoning!
At this point I don't care if I never see Tom Welling in tights. I've seen Clark become Superman 30 times before this show's gotten to it, better. That's what happens when you spend ten years dancing around the point, I got bored. The only thing I'm really looking forward to with this final season, if anything, is the "writers"(and I can not put enough air quotes around that word in terms of smallville) putting Erica Durance in every skimpy outfit, compromising position, and borderline fetish scenario they can to drum up ratting so they can make it look like they're going out on top. Yes, I'm a wanky, disgusting pervert. Sue me. I'm bored with everything else they're doing. And even then, I'm not gonna watch it. I have internet, and it's wonderful!
A JLA without Batman and Wonder Woman is a Justice League I'm even less interested in than this show. The characters on the team they have are boring. They're written boring, or they're not written at all. They're background noise at best. They barely interact, and they certainly don't have a lot of chemistry together, and other than the conflict they face, the chemistry between an ensemble cast is so important.
If you like Smallville, that's cool. I've got no problem with the people that like this show. I've tried. I really have. I just can't stand it, but I can't deny that despite it's overwhelming, ever-increasing problems, it's lasted ten years and that's commendable.

Flash wasnt Barry, and Green Arrow just has to look like a green Archer.
Teh reason why so many people want him in his costume isnt because they want to see the costume, its because (if you read the initial post) the longer he goes around being a hero without the costume, the more ridiculous his years as superman get. The longer it takes him to put it on, the stupider he looks next to all the JLA and JSA in full gear. This crap was supposed to be done before he ever met Lois Lane, the star reporter who he's supposed to spend an extra 5 or 6 years with before she figures it out. How dumb does she look if shes already seen Clark without glasses and all that stuff? How genius is Lex if he spends years staring dead at the face of his once best friend and still not know who he is? JImmy looks up to Clark, and one day Superman, and he NEVER knows who he is?
Clark was supposed to be the first big deal in a costume. This show has already taken that from him. And for the last few seasons they have been making a mockery of any and everyone who they've already introduced who never knows who he is. we want him in his costume so that stupidity can end.

and  Christopher Reeve looked great in his costume. It looks good if it tailored right and the person wearing it knows what their doing.

I dont get why everyone wants to see the Super Suit on Smallville, it won't come out cool. In the comics it looks badass, but in the all of the movies, the costume does not look cool at all, matter of fact it looks ridiculous on the big screen. Now unless they change it up like that picture that one guy posted where he has the large red leather jack over his costume, it would cooler because it would look like something a badass would wear. And it would match what the others wear as well, because I don't see Green Arrow wearing his spendex, I dont see Flash wearing the stupid little outfit with lightning ears.

@Preacherl2k: I know going with tights will really change the dynamic of the show but this is the last season. Everyone will know it. Some may figure why bother when they know it's gonna end. They need to up their game in order to keep viewers and even try to bring in more new viewers. How many new viewers will want to commit to a show that's about to end? They don't have a lot to lose but experimenting. Let's just hope they don't get ridiculous.

I love Superman, but for this season maybe they should just wait till the very last episode. The reason I say this b/c you know on the small screen his costuem will be gay as hell. Last episode should set up for the Motion Picture that suppost to be coming out JLA. So when they do finally show him in tights, to suit will be of high quality and really truly show the essence of Superman.... and hell who knows, they might be doing that anyways!!!

But ya'll are right, all this dancing around the writers are doing with his character is some bs... get on with it already....

i think it's gotten kinda ridiculous how long they've made this show last, and how apparently before he was Superman, Clark has already fought almost every one of his classic rogues gallery. Lex, Brainiac, Zodd, Metallo and even f'n Doomsday! He's rubbed elbows with the Justice League and Justice Society, and he's met the Legion of Superheroes.

They really should've stopped this whole "before superman" shitake long ago. It's really gotten stupid how long they've made this draw out. I liked the idea early on, Supes' early years, before becoming a hero, still doing good in the world. But now? now he's Superman in everything but name and f'n tights. They're afraid to bring him into the suit, yet now there's other heroes running around in tights. It's obviously not set in ANY continuity, they could just give him their own take on the classic costume, not that stupid wannabe Neo outfit.

I have been a loyal and excited fan since season one.  I even watch the entire run right before the new season starts. I still love it. I accept it as its own entity, and i don't mind them bringing in the DCU.  I would like to see him fly. Also I am not a fan of say the Kandorians gaining their powers and being more powerfull than Clark.
If they get their powers from our sun, it goes to show that he would have absorbed more. Also he would be more experienced with the powers. Also he knows he can fly since he saw Kara do it two seasons ago.
As an aside I will say not making a Supergirl spin off was a missed opprotunity.
Back on subject  I would love to see a finale that lives up to its hype also. The Doomsday battle was built up all season, but then barely lasted four minutes worth of show time.
Checkmate was taken out way to easy after its build up as the Governments biggest weapon against meta humans. Lex Luthors level 22 was more dangerous in the long run.
Not to mention an army of Supermen and a promise of a huge finale only to have them just up and leave.

In a lot of ways, I’m tired of all the foreshadowing and eluding to Clark becoming Superman. If anything, I would luv to see an epilogue episode where you see him in all his Red & Blue glory.

I've only ever watched the Justice Society episodes of Smallville. I thought they were alright. Every other episode i've caught snippets of seemed to be a little cheap and badly written. Using professional wrestlers as bad guys and all that.

Agreed that it has gone on too long without Clark becoming Superman. If they start the final season with him putting on the suit and finally making that transition, I will watch every episode. It'll be about time.

I agree. The Smallville show is full of contradictions. The Superman characters do things that they shouldn't be doing- talking to each other, use super powers in public, reveal too much of their secrets, fall in love and so forth. It's a total contradiction from the source material and don't anyone say otherwise.

I'm actually curious to see the final conclusion to the Smallville series. Let's hope it ties well with the way it should be.

They waited way too long, he should have been in the suit in season 6 but they have really let the fans down when it comes to everything.  I don't think that we will see the tights unfortunately, I am sure that Chris Nolan would rather not have his next big franchise make an appearance first on the CW, especially since he and David Goyer already have the difficult task of making people forget about the abortion of a film that Superman Returns was.  With Warner Bros. finally stepping up and making DC  Comics their priority with movie rights I think its very unlikely we see Tom Welling in the Red and Blue spandex.  The end of season 10 will probably be him making his way to the Fortress of Solitude in order to get his proper training.  Warners has stepped in before though with the CW/WB in that they don't allow the costumes to come out let alone the true identity of characters with movies coming out, we haven't even seen Arthur Curry in a few seasons, ever since Leonardo DiCaprio bought the rights to the Aquaman movie, and they wouldn't allow them to even mention that a Bruce Wayne or Diana Prince existed.  I am not expecting much out of season 10, though I hold out hope, I imagine it will just be another huge disappointment.  With a real Superman movie coming out in a year or two though I think that I can hold on and be patient to see Supes don the Cape and Spandex.

I wont sit here and act like I dint watch the show..& like I dint used to enjoy it..  But thats only because the fanboy in me used to do backflips everytime a new development in Lexs complex personality seemed to unravel itself... (That &KristenKreuks NO oilpainting)

After I realised it basically turned into an over stylised super-soap-opera.. I kinda switched off &only watched to see if theyd ever come back to some semblance of reality... Has ANYONE stopped to wonder HOW exactly are they going to EXPLAIN his secret  identity??

His "disguise" was already the most implausible gimmick in comics history..  So the sheer lack of foresight &shallowness (he didnt keep the glasses because it didnt poll well with teenage girls) in the production is astounding..coupled with the fact the only recent season eps worth watching are the one where theyve obviously sat down &jus COPIED eps of JL & JL Unlimited where Clark &Bruce go at it (have u not noticed GA in Smallville IS Batman with Arrows & a green hoody?)

Other than that all theyve done is totally rinse PRIMO material that had NO place bein used yet ...
Facepalms.. Shakes head in Disgust.. SMFH

I wanted this show to end years ago. I'd still actually get a warm fuzzy feeling in my black heart if the show was cancelled mid season, preventing the obvious finale, allowing all those who still push this show with a slave like mentality to feel my rage and discomfort. But I think I'd actually watch this show if they just had him in the tights. Superboy wore tights. And let's face it, this show stopped being Smallville a looooooooonnngggg time ago. So there's no real excuse anymore.
@AirDave817:
This version of Superman is so muddled, long, and filled with terrible writing and acting that  it would never work as a movie. A ten year long series continued in a movie? No. Terrible idea.

Just like the X-Files Movie? The first one was good. I came the party late and went back and watched it all the way through. Yes, there were layers of cheese, and Lang stunk, but the recent years have been redeeming. I only wish that Lex was still around. He needs to be back in the last season. I am really hoping they transition this show into another heroes show say JLA or something.
"
Your example does nothing for your argument. The X-file movies have been panned, not only by critics, but its fans.
Anyone who is less than a casual fan of Superman or Smallville is not going to take the time to watch a ten season, 22 episode series. And if that's the case, why would you make a movie based on that take of the franchise. A reboot, by definition, is a completely new start of a franchise. Smallville is not.
There are very rare cases were a movie of a tv show does well. The only one I can think of is the Simpsons movie. The SNL ones don't count, Those are sketches with no ongoing story that needs to be known by a general audience.

I say yes it will work & what I liked was from you could see of his costume they kept it traditional. They didn't give it like the Smallville look like they did with Cyborg & Impulse.

This would be a great promo for next season.
This would be a great promo for next season.

Another thing I'm excited about is that we might get Darkseid for next season. The little hints that you saw in the season finale kind of leads to make me and a few others to that assumption. With Green Arrow being swarmed and attacked in the air duct & yelling out they're not Kandorians. Which right away made believe they were Parademons. The Old Lady at the hosptial outside Tess's room. Which makes you believe it could be Granny Goodness & possibly make Tess one of her Female Furies. Which ironically Granny Goodness had a pet dog named Mercy.

Superman needs to appear in the very last moments of the show...I'm tired of them toying with my feeling. Ex. Superman only appears in dreams, visons of the future or in metafours and even then....he's a blur

probably not till the end of the final show like you said, i still say that i want to see villains from apocalyps and allies from new genesis show up, and eventually lead to a battle between darkseid and clark or orion. and they should be more action packed battles like when clark fought and killed the phantom zone escapee titan a few seasons back. i would even like to see lobo before the show ends. but, i seriously doubt any of that will happen, the final season will probably just be about the return of lex, old. they need some other villains already.

I enjoyed Smallville when it first started. I haven't watched for a couple of seasons now with the exception of an episode or 2. It is time for the show to end on a high note with some type of costume that resembles the comics since other heroes have come in in tights or with outfits that were close to the comics and get to flying. In other news, Allison Mack is leaving the show. She will appear in a few episodes to clear up her character and gracefully make her exit. http://www.foxnews.com/entertainment/2010/05/20/allison-mack-leaving-smallville/

Being a hardcore viewer of Smallville I recently went back and started watching from the beginning again and whether anyone else wants to admit it, there was already a shift in the show and its aim as soon as it went mainly to Metropolis.  I feel the producers, etc should have issued a statement something about the transition of the show the next "piece" of the saga.  Calling it Smallville still would have been fine to represent the fact that he isn't the Superman we all know and love yet but if you go back and see the high school piece of this show, the focus and structure of the show is different, as it should be.  I see it in three pieces.  The high school piece of the story, the coming of age and maturity piece, and now the last season, the becoming superman piece.  I agree they have a lot to explain to get the "glasses" worked out but I'm sure they will.  I would be/am rdy to see him in his costume even if he finds it embarrassing or not quite him yet and being pushed there this season.  I think the show has done a decent job overall and there is nothing wrong with the costumes before him.  This is its own piece of the mythos and should be treated as so.  Also as a small explanation of dorky Clark, that might be something the writers explore this season is developing that piece of his dual identity.  I saw it explained that season 8 was human power stage, season 9 was kryptonian blur stage, and season 10 will be the incorporation of both, just a thought.  As a closing thought, I'm sure he wouldn't be u for it, but seeing Tom Welling as Chris Nolan's Superman would be awesome, along with ED's Lois of course.  :)  Thanks for a great ride to the writers!

They should just have the last season lead directly into the original Crisis on Infinite Earths with The Anti-Monitor destroying the Smallvilleverse and with Clark ending up lost in the big white void that was left over following the first Crisis so that he can later be found by that one version of The Legion of Super-Heroes who, following the events of Legion of Three Worlds, went back into the void to seek out lost survivors from other realities that were destroyed during the first Crisis and then have that Clark make a reappearance in the comics.

I would like to see superman in tights in the last season, you know what else i'd like? How aabout a scene of lois where you see her write "I spent the night with Superman". it would be awesome if the could work that in there.

@PrinceIMC:
Yeah, it definitely makes more sense in the show's world of costumes than a blue spandex suit....which would look really out of place. I'm hoping some of those JLAers have more frequent appearances, that would be pretty sweet.

@lostlantern13: I actually really like that picture. That could be how they do it for the show, he'd look natural standing next to Green Arrow and maybe some other JLAers. Get that Kyle kid in a real Flash costume and they gotta come up with a hero version of J'onn for long term appearances.

I always saw Smallville as the "realistic" Superman show...
What I mean by that is that Clark Kent in this show is already Superman, but he became Superman in the manner a real-life Supes would be like... because if you think about it, there is little to no possibility of an alien who came to earth and grew up as a human to suddenly say; "I'm going to wear Red, White and Yellow and have people look at me"... because if that were to happen then the alien would be at ridicule...
I don't mind Smallville because I consider it the Ultimate Universe of DC... the retelling...
So if they want to put the tight on him or not I won't care...
