Off My Mind: Should There Be More Super-Powered Animals?

With so many humans "accidentally" gaining powers, what about animals?

The odds say there should be more super-powered animals. Think about it. There are so many humans with special abilities. Some are gained through a bizarre accident. Others are developed. Then there's those that are born with them due to a genetic quirk. What about animals?

No Caption Provided
I know that there are some super-pets running around. The " Pet Avengers" have their share of adventures (but we know it's not in true continuity, right?). Not including those that train to become a superhero, you would think just by birth alone we would see more animals developing powers. Shouldn't we see more animals running around (or flying) with super-abilities?

Let me be straight and say that I am not putting out the call for more super-pets. I just find it surprising back when there were so many mutants being born that this genetic anomaly would only be a factor for humans.

Besides the Pet Avengers, I know there has been super-powered animals at DC in the past. Most of them were from Krypton so that doesn't really count (plus they've pretty much been wiped from continuity, except Krypto because he's so cool).

What is it that would cause a human to be born with the X-gene but wouldn't be an issue for animals. Don't they say that chimpanzees share 98% of the same genetic code? How come there's never any comic chimps phasing through their bars at the zoo or having telekinetic powers to get all the bananas they want before feeding time?

I think the answer is simple. There is a conspiracy in both the Marvel and DC Universes. There must be a secret Super-Powered Animal Taskforce (shall we refer to them as SPAT?). Why are animals being held back? Are their rights being taken away? Has there been some sort of super-animal registration act that we didn't know about? Are all the super-powered animals being taken away and placed in a government-run animal shelter? Where did Comet and Beppo the super monkey really disappear to? Something smells fishy and I'm sure it's not a super-powered goldfish flying around with the ability to turn invisible.

Do you think more super-powered animals should exist?

The Pet Avengers ARE in continuity! How dare you say such a thing, G-man!? :O

I guess it's cause if there were more super animals, comics would be seen as more childish than they already are by most people :P

Nice point G-Man. I remember that Catseye from the X-Men was speculated to be a mutant cat.

Extraordinary animals have been a staple of comic books almost as long as superheroes themselves. Animals with special abilities and heightened intelligence are no more ridiculous (considerably less so, actually) than people who fly through force of will or move objects with their minds. I want to see more of them!

NO!!!

Unless it's a little bit of fun outside of continuity or handled extremely well.
Most comic readers are over six years old and have out grown that sort of thing long ago.

This was actually a plot point in Ultimate X-Men. Back when Magneto was believed to be dead and Quicksilver was in charge of the Brotherhood, they wound up recruiting a lot of mutant animals.

Then as soon as Magneto was back, he killed them all because they were part of why the Brotherhood sucked so much without him. It was pretty hilarious.

You're right...!!

No, I'm saying Pet Avengers IS in continuity, but some folks insist on saying it isn't. There is no ambiguity in this story.

Follow Chris Eliopoulos on Twitter.  He's a top notch guy :)

Although, they still come out with things that don't seem to fit in with Earth-616 Continuity... and they appeared in the new Power Pack series (Thor & the Warriors Four) which isn't Earth-616 either. D'oh!

Anyway, I love the idea of more hero animals.  I like Rocket Raccoon & Cosmo, but not enough to get the GotG, but I so have the Marvel Handbook to Pets :)  And I'd love to see the return of super sring cyborg Lobster Bill :)

Of course, if you have more super hero animals, then you're going to get more super villain critters too...

Think about it.  Audrey II, the Killer Tomatoes, that creepy stuff that consumed that one dood in Creepshow, SWAMP THING.  I mean, it's a no brainer, really.

no more pet animals in continuity. they never have anything interesting to do. when i first heard about Krypto coming back i was appalled what would he do. then they brought him back and all he can do is be mindless muscle or cute comic relief. super animals aren't like human characters they cant talk and you as a reader can't relate to them they are just there.

I'm pretty sure I read that Ruffles the Rage Kitty (Dex-Starr) isn't an alien, he's actually a normal Earth cat.  In my mind that just makes the whole character even better.  I'd love to see the return of Ace the Bat-Hound if they had the character the way he was in Batman Beyond.  I figure an issue of Superman/Batman focused entirely on Krypto and Ace could be the most adorable thing ever.

I think more comics should feature super animals. They are nice and friendly for the little ones, and great way to introduce younger readers to comic books.

The problem isn't the pets gaining powers. We already have suspension of disbelief in play here. Not to mention, the entire "mutant" concept as shown in the X-titles blatantly disregards all rules and logic of evolution. I love the X-Men, but I'm afraid its misrepresentation of evolution adds to the public's already dim understanding of the subject. But I digress.

The true problem with pet superheroes is having them be sentient. It's an odd road to tread. Without entering a Disney-like world where animals are anthropomorphic metaphors for humans, who even share our slang and pop culture references, there are only so many evil scientists to enhance the intellect of a gorilla, etc. Maybe if they gave a common explanation for all of these self-aware animals, like the High Evolutionary is continually cranking them out, perhaps it'd be an easier sell.

I don't think Lockheed fits in this category. He's an alien race that is quite intelligent. Seeing as his world followed a different evolutionary path, it allows for us to more easily accept it, as opposed to looking at animals we know to have limited ability to reason such as frogs.

@ComicMan24:
Geoff Johns stated that Dex-Starr is an Earth born cat in multiple interviews and Con panels.

I think it all depends on how they're handled, the Pet Avengers is a very well done book and the concept works and I think everyone loves Rage Kitty.

Sorry, but pets having super powers is just lame and campy. The only exception might be mythological creatures (kinda like Lockheed).

Hit Monkey is without a doubt my favorite SPA (Super-Powered Animal). I say he classifies because he's a monkey capable of full-blown higher thought processes and possesses a full understanding of human speech in many languges. Sounds like a possible monkey super-power to me! Not to mention, any monkey that goes ape-hit (see wot i did thar?) crazy enough to scare Deadpool into going bananas is clearly beyond the baseline poo-flinging variety.

Lockjaw and Lockheed both work well as SPAs, but at the same time, they're both aliens who aren't really animals with superpowers. Lockjaw is an Inhuman that breathed the terrigen mists as a child and became a teleporting dog-like creature. He's still basically no different than any other Inhuman, except he never was raised to mentally progress past a child-like stage of development. That said, he's still been shown to be quite intelligent however, child-like or not. Meanwhile, Lockheed is part of a fully sentient alien race with higher thought processes and their own spoken language as a whole. He just happens to resemble a fairy tale dragon. It's not like breathing fire isn't something others of his race can't do, so it's not really a superpower and he's not really an animal.

Niels is where we get a prime example of what doesn't work. Hairball has no other power beyond that of Speedball. As such, Niels should technically have no control over his powers as the instincts he was born with have nothing to do with them. Speedball's powers were rather spastic and borderline chaotic. In a cat working purely off instinct, I can't help but see anything other thatn a potentially destructive menace to society. With no real ability to control its powers and no real way to be trained (you don't train cats... you just don't) to properly use them, Niels is a perfect example of the kind of SPA that shouldn't ever be allowed to roam free in comic book world.

i think they should have more super powered animals running around, but they are at best livestock (like Odin's horse) and more often monsters that must be fought (like in the old Hercules myths).

How come there's never any comic chimps phasing through their bars at the zoo or having telekinetic powers to get all the bananas they want before feeding time?

There should be a crossover with all the pets, "Furry Crisis." All the Pets meet there darker counterparts from a separate universe. There will be a lot of cross-breeding, so new pets with super-powers will emerge. They'll call it, "Crisis of Infinite Cross-Breeding" Then we'll have a really Big Crap of a storyline!

I don't think enough people would take super-animals seriously. They would probably have to stay out of canon, be a mini-series, or be in a kid's book.

I read that somewhere on the 'net, but I'm not sure how accurate is is.

Speaking of, there's this character from the old Daredevil (Lev Gleason) books. It's a twist on the old werewolf trope, at any rate.

He's meant to be an Inhuman that changed into a teleporting dog when he underwent the Terregenesis.  I don't know where that was originally stated, but he's always treated as a dog... so I don't know how accurate that 'origin' story is.

Actually, when you start to thinka bout it, there are quite a few superpowered animals out there: Old Lace (Runaways) Lockjaw (X-men) Dex-Starr (Red Lanterns) Dr. Pobo (Umbrella Academy) And wasn't there a Green Lantern that was a cosmic squirel, or something? Also, I seem to remember seeing a one-off where the x-men were all dogs...
