Off My Mind: Should Lois Lane Get Her Own Series?

Lois could investigate the secrets of the DC Universe without Superman hanging around.

No Caption Provided

A couple weeks ago on Twitter, unofficial talk began about Lois Lane deserving her own series. Even creators such as Sterling Gates, Gail Simone, Greg Rucka and Phil Jimenez all expressed their love for the character. Lois made her debut back in 1938 in Action Comics #1 with Superman and deserves her own series. She's had a series before before with Superman's Girl Friend, Lois Lane which lasted over one hundred issues, as well as some other series.

It makes perfect sense for Lois to get her own title. She is the number one person in Superman's life. She managed to get her own series back in 1958. Female characters have proven that they can carry a title on their own. And if Lex Luthor can take over Action Comics, Lois deserves her own adventures as well.

There may be those asking how Lois could possibly carry her own series. Let's face it, Superman's Girl Friend, Lois Lane was a little on the silly side and got a bit stereotypical at times. Lois is a different character these days. The premise for a solo series would be easy.

No Caption Provided

A new Lois Lane series wouldn't be about Lois sitting around waiting for Superman to return from his adventures. Lois is a tough character. She grew up as the daughter of General Sam Lane. She has been placed in danger time and time again. She won't stand down when faced against the odds. As an investigative reporter, she could easily go on assignments around the world.

We have so many superhero comics and a Lois Lane comic could bring something different. Let's see Lois go after the big stories that other reporters are afraid to cover. There is so much corruption hidden in the bowels of the DC Universe that Lois would have no problem keeping busy. We could see Lois trying to go behind the scenes and uncover the secrets of the DC Universe and have the occasional cameo appearance by Superman and other random characters. Since she's supposed to be such a great and prize-winning journalist, let's see her prove that. The recent Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen specials by James Robinson were great because they showed Jimmy trying to uncover a huge secret which nearly cost him his life. Comic books don't have to focus on superheroes all the time.

DC has gotten wind of the Lois Lane series talk. Let's hope they decide to take a chance and do something about it. They could easily put out a one shot or miniseries to see how it does in sales. With the right creative team, a Lois Lane comic would be a great comic and could give us something different.

Would you be interested in a Lois Lane comic? Do you think she has what it takes to hold her own series?

Hell yes. I would kill to see Lois Lane ongoing. And kill again for Marvel to counter it with J. Jonah Jameson ongoing.

I'll let my latest review for an issue of Superman's Girl Friend Lois Lane speak for itself on this topic.

I think it would be at least worth a mini-series. Lois Lane is a pretty amazing character, I would read it for sure!

The appeal of "classic" Lois Lane IMHO is her charm.  She was coy, clever, sly, ambitious, driven, charming, etc.  Contemporary Lois is dour and uninteresting.  I have very little interest in this idea at all.  How long before the title is sucked into company x-overs, etc.?  Meh.  Like we need more of that...

I'll just go read the old LL comics collections and enjoy!

She should, but I must admit I wouldn't read it unless I got an incentive. I'd rather read Jimmy Olsen.

Hmm...not a fan of any Superman stories or comics, you can count Smallville as my Superman related thing I like. At the end of the day, Batman & GL book are my only real favorite DC books and a book about Lois seems like a snorefest. It'd be like the Bird of Prey with only Babs sitting in her wheel-chair looking at comps the entire issue

Yeah, why not? What is she doing when Superman's not around? They never show her own life, just make her a cameo for Superman. It would be great!

Nope. Would rather have Linda Park West or Iris  Allen have their own series.
Why on EARTH are there so many reporter super-hero wives?

If Sue Dibny was still alive she would be perfect for her own series.

Didn't read the comments, forgive me if I repeat anyone...

While Lois' career as an investigative journalist could certainly carry a series as well as any detective character, I think it's arguable whether she deserves her own series.  Award winning top flight journalist is part of her character that we've always known, but we've also always had to accept that she couldn't figure out on her own that Clark Kent was Superman.  The cover of her shocked face as Clark takes off his glasses stands out in my mind here.

It's a small quibble, to be sure, as Lois' credentials and savvy have been well established before and after the big reveal, but still, should she really have her own series?  She's one of the greatest of supporting characters, but I don't always think it's a great idea to spotlight supporting characters in their own series.  Lex Luthor's a villain, and that's a little bit different animal (although personally, I don't like villains getting series either).

Because the heroes met their future wifes at work and it is unrealistic that the same woman is always at the dangerous place. But if the woman is an reporter than you can imagine why she is always at the spot ;-)

" This is a fantastic idea- she is a complex character with a rich mythos who does not get nearly enough attention in current comics.   Of course she can be exciting enough to have her own series! Too far removed from the action? Hardly. She is often at the center of the action, and her exploits could provide rich meat for a more realistic title in DC. "
I explained further that I realize she could be in the mix more but it just wouldn't be very entertaining.I don't want "Single Female Lawyer" the comic if you get what I mean.I don't want a procedural journalist comic and if I did want that I would just read more Marvel books (Single Gamma Lawyer). This is just my male-18-30-superheroes-as-wish-fulfillment opinion.I bet you think you would like it but once it happened you would realize it just isn't worth not picking up something else to get a Lois Lane comic although I would probably rather read it than say The Outsiders currently. "

well said. I agree with not necessarily wanting a procedural either (and 'Single Gamma Lawyer ' is seriously hilarious, well done), which is why I think that 'hybrid' would be the thing to go with in terms of a Lois Lane series. Keep her at the center of the action, but use the series to mirror the Supers. Perhaps looking at well-known arcs or meta-events from her perspective, that might give the audience a very strong connection to her- we can take her outlook on these superhero events and easily connect ourselves to its verisimilitude ('yeah, if I saw a bunch of GLs take on the Anti-Monitor, that is what I would have thought/said/felt).

And my male 18-30-superheroes-as-wish-fulfillment opinion currently loves what is going on in comics, but I think there would be some room for Lois, if done correctly.

I like the idea of lois appearing and exposing secrets others are trying to conceal, that being said, I do not think she can carry a series herself. Rather, she would work better in the background, ala Oracle. Exposing secrets as others are working toward their own agendas.

Ugh, third time I've seen that spammer.  ANYWAY, I've never seen Lois Lane as a series worthy girl, maybe the Lois Lane from Smallville (growwwwl) lol, she's a hot little firecracker who is somewhat involved in Watch Tower, something like that may make her more interesting but as a roving report, that seems about as interesting as spending a day as Clark Kent (minus the Super persona).

To be fair, Lois Lane is arguably a more interesting character than Superman (which is a melting point for a debate, obviously).  The big problem I always have with her; you have this outstandingly strong, aggressive journalist and yet she ALWAYS HAS to get saved by Superman.  What a blasted cliche' and gender critique that turns out to be.  This woman who, by our social standards and in the more recent Lois Lane incarcerations, would be a sizable woman and a famous journalist deserves to have an independent and unique identity carved for herself.  She also never compromises her sexuality like many other scantily-clad super-women do.  That being said, she's ideal for a damn good writer to take on and present in an enlightening new way.  In a lot of cases you could take the action scenes out of certain good Batman stories and still have a great book.  Why not do a great investigative-journalist style book with Lois?  Maybe just a limited series, but something to give her credence more than just Superman's bone, right?    .

I think this is a great idea. I expect a level of adventure but also being able to see a superhero's world through civilian eyes adds a whole dimension to it that is seldom given credit for. Girlfriends can come off as accessories but I've found types like Lois, Gwen Stacy, and MJ to be equally as compelling and important as the men they're with because these heroes, these superpowered, super loaded upstanding citizens with all their explosive adventures gain so much from those they love and it's important to spotlight them as individuals because of this.

Where would Peter Parker be without the Gwen Stacy tragedy? What would he be without his love for MJ? What would Clark be without Lois to anchor him into humanity and tell it to him like it is? That image of Superman saving her is iconic not because Superman has the strength and speed to accomplish it but because he loves Lois enough to do it for her every time. Lois, Gwen, MJ, they're not instruments to inspire pathos or create storylines- they're an extension of the mythology that could definitely benefit that mythology if given some meatier stories.

Lois could totally have some awesome adventures that call for her intellect and resourcefulness as well as her assertiveness to pull through. She has a strong will and a noble heart, not to mention she's an absolute delight to watch because she has a believable and human charm.

All anyone would have to do to make a good Lois Lane story is imagine- the possibilities are endless.
