Off My Mind: Rewriting History—The First Avengers?

We all know who the first Avengers were...or do we?

No Caption Provided
The story of how the Avengers were formed is pretty simple. Loki was being his sneaky self and tricked Hulk into fighting Thor, Iron Man, Wasp and Ant-Man. They decided to continue fighting together since they worked so well together. They chose to use the name Avengers because Wasp felt it sounded colorful and dramatic. It turns out they might not actually be the first Avengers.

There's been talk that super-spy Nick Fury was involved with the formation of the Avengers. This doesn't really make a lot of sense unless he somehow was involved with that incident involving Loki and Hulk.

In the pages of New Avengers, we are finding out about the secret history of Nick Fury. If you read New Avengers #9, you saw the flashback to 1959 and the mention of the Avengers Initiative. And then there's the cover to New Avengers #12 dealing with the first Avengers. They sure don't look like any Avengers I've seen before. Who were these first Avengers and what do they have to do with the survival of one of the Avengers today?
 == TEASER ==
No Caption Provided
Let's take a look at who appears on the cover of New Avengers #12:
  • Starting in the center we have Dominic Fortune. There have been a couple different Dominic Fortunes but it turns out they are the same man. He started off as a mercenary in the 1930s and eventually found and replicated an imperfect version of the Super Soldier Serum (which explains his youthful appearance). Of all these first Avengers, it makes sense why he might be able to help the wounded Avenger in issue #9.
  • Continuing clockwise we have Dum Dum Dugan next. He was in the Howling Commandoes with Fury and was also hanging out with him in 1959 when Fury was approached about the Avengers Initiative
  • Ulysses Bloodstone is another soldier of fortune who built up a fortune working as a mercenary in the 20th Century.
  • Kraven the Hunter was a big game hunter that was convinced to hunt Spider-Man when we first saw him. He was done mercenary work but how could he have been around in the late 1950s? It's likely that with all the herbs and potions he's taken, one of them helped to slow down his aging.
  • Sabretooth an Avenger? This is almost getting crazy...almost. Victor Creed is another individual with an extended lifespan, due to his healing factor. What would he be doing working with this government-controlled Avengers? He did spend some time in Team X, a CIA covert ops unit. Obviously his name was in the rolodex of the President and/or Nick Fury when it came to forming this team.
  • Namora is the cousin of Namor. She worked with Ulysses Bloodstone in the 50s as a member of the Monster Hunters. She was also a member of Agents of Atlas which was formed by the FBI in 1958.

At first glance, it seems these individuals have nothing in common. After thinking about them, you can see they do have a few things in common. They all have had extended lifespans through natural or chemical means. Most of them can be considered mercenaries or have worked with a government agency in the 1950s. All of them would be expected to keep something like this a secret since they're not really the chatting type to discuss their past.

While this may be another case of retconning history, I have to say the idea of this group of characters working together is very interesting. They're not a group of individuals you'd want to go up against and the idea of them together makes you wonder what the heck the reason was for their formation. With the different personalities on this team, it makes sense that they wouldn't last long as an actual team. Most would be in it for the money and they simply wouldn't get along well with others.

I'm normally against secret histories being injected into what we already know and being expected to accept it. These individuals may be the first group to be called Avengers but, so far, it doesn't look like that will really affect the Avengers' history that we already know. These guys were brought together by the President and Nick Fury. Our Avengers sort of got together on their own and came up with the name themselves...unless that changes as well. Whatever the case, I do want to see this group of Avengers trying to work together and can't wait to see what the threat they have to face is.

Will this group of Avengers change the Avengers we've known all these years? I don't see that as the case but then again, you never know.

WOW there are a lot people leaving people leaving comments that just floor me.  "How can this be the team?" "How can they change history?"  It's a simple answer.  It's comics.  History is changed all the time.  Get over it.  Read the story first.  Bendis has done a pretty damn good job of writing the Avengers for something like what, five years now, and he's doing a good job at it.

I like that collection of characters, but then again, I'm addicted to the mercenary archetype.  I'm really looking forward to seeing where this goes.

Meh. Bendis rewrites continuity and character relationships whenever he feels like, and we have no power to do so otherwise. Marvel continuity is an absolute joke right now, and it's sad that they continue to pretend that the "past" has any sort of relevance to the characters. They want it both ways and can't get either of them.

I agree, not normally a fan of fudging history when it comes to these characters, but in this case, it's actually intriguing. I will have to see where this develops.

well some of these guys make sense, since most either went nuts, (Sabretooth, Kraven) are dead now, (Bloodstone and Sabretooth) or know about government protocol.

Plus someone like Sabretooth's memories have always been tampered with.

This could be interesting if handled well.

saw someone mention the 'inglorious bastards' which I think may explain where this came from. someone wanted that film in Marvel. I see a long dark road up ahead. leading to a wide open expanse of white nothingness. just a bad feeling. Cthullu help us all.

my patience for the eternal retcon is wearing thin... saying that, after my initial annoyance at hearing about these stories i usually enjoy them to a certain degree.. i think that i appreciate stories set in the present day more is all..

I think the current Marvel is borrowing from the Ultimates stuff a bit with Nick Fury doing some dirt in that universe. This is an intriguing development indeed

Ding, ding, ding!!!
I wouldn't mind an ongoing title with this team. Seems like something that could truly be great if pulled off well. So much character to mine in this team. Especially if Fury's on the team with them. In reference to what G-Man said, I don't feel that this messes with the history of THE Avengers, so I'm fine with this. But seriously, how could it have taken somebody this long to come up with a team like this?! Kraven and Creed on the same squad?! That alone would ensure I at least read the first issue.

I am actually kinda intrigued by this. I mean the fact Kraven and Sabretooth were on the team is kinda cool because I enjoy any (well-written) story with them in it. I wonder how the banter between Kraven and Sabretooth would go. Both being wild men and hunters in their own right. Creed is obnoxious enough to start a fued with a man that has hunted lions and other jungle cats as a career of sorts and I could only imagine how it would go.

Was just thinking about that, just those two alone could make this a worthwhile read. Wait, how far away is Bendis from this? Because I abhor him post early days on New Avengers...

Vulcan was actually on the 2nd team.  The first team is still the Cyclops, Jean, Iceman, Angel and Beast....for now anyway.

This team could be really cool, but it's too bad they are trying to dub them the "Avengers".   The thing that really bothers me about it is that literally no one from the actual Avengers is involved. So it's not really a precursor to the modern Avengers, more like a coincidence that they used the same name.

I dig any group that Sabretooth and Kraven are in together. This screams true avenging being done.  Them two would make me think of Covert Ops, Vietnam era missions, plausible deniability and all.

Marvel does like to retcon to keep up with their movie releases (Nick Fury forming the Avengers). Personally I think the 50's Captain America would of been a nice touch to the team.

Exactly! On both accounts!

The "Avengers Initiative"? Really? Like the movies? Do they need to format and update their comic to match the movies, really? It's like considering their comics are just a big advertising act for the movies...

I'd find this idea intriguing if Sabretooth and Kraven weren't on the team.  Ret-conning canon is touchy enough wihtout inserting characters that are known and accepted villains.

Ugh. I dont know if im gonna like this. Making a 'new Origin' story is  a tricky thing.
There are some examples of how it went bad for a lot of people, Like Gwen Stacy having an affair with Norman Osborn, of the Clone Saga.
But then again, it turned out great (at least in my opinion) for X-men Deadly Genesis and Captain America and Bucky.
Who knows how this will turn out...what did you think of all those other story's I just mentioned?

Because, according to Marvel, you just can't have enough Avengers books out there!

I'm looking forward to Fantastic Avengers, X-Avengers, Avengers For Hire and Rom: Space Avenger

They read more like a group of Re-vengers more than Avengers, but as kick ass death squad they look quite formidable. I would love this as a mini serie.

how many secret teams that existed before ff#1 are there is the Marvel U this one' s just a little to rediculous. Yeah maybe the they are the first Dark Avengers or The Howling Weapon's of Atlas X but they are not the avengers before there  were avengers. It's like some guy saying hey me and my 3 buddies hung out in the 50's so we are the first Fantastic Four.
