Off My Mind: Rewriting History—The First Avengers?

We all know who the first Avengers were...or do we?

The story of how the Avengers were formed is pretty simple. Loki was being his sneaky self and tricked Hulk into fighting Thor, Iron Man, Wasp and Ant-Man. They decided to continue fighting together since they worked so well together. They chose to use the name Avengers because Wasp felt it sounded colorful and dramatic. It turns out they might not actually be the first Avengers.

There's been talk that super-spy Nick Fury was involved with the formation of the Avengers. This doesn't really make a lot of sense unless he somehow was involved with that incident involving Loki and Hulk.

In the pages of New Avengers, we are finding out about the secret history of Nick Fury. If you read New Avengers #9, you saw the flashback to 1959 and the mention of the Avengers Initiative. And then there's the cover to New Avengers #12 dealing with the first Avengers. They sure don't look like any Avengers I've seen before. Who were these first Avengers and what do they have to do with the survival of one of the Avengers today?
 == TEASER ==
Let's take a look at who appears on the cover of New Avengers #12:
  • Starting in the center we have Dominic Fortune. There have been a couple different Dominic Fortunes but it turns out they are the same man. He started off as a mercenary in the 1930s and eventually found and replicated an imperfect version of the Super Soldier Serum (which explains his youthful appearance). Of all these first Avengers, it makes sense why he might be able to help the wounded Avenger in issue #9.
  • Continuing clockwise we have Dum Dum Dugan next. He was in the Howling Commandoes with Fury and was also hanging out with him in 1959 when Fury was approached about the Avengers Initiative
  • Ulysses Bloodstone is another soldier of fortune who built up a fortune working as a mercenary in the 20th Century.
  • Kraven the Hunter was a big game hunter that was convinced to hunt Spider-Man when we first saw him. He was done mercenary work but how could he have been around in the late 1950s? It's likely that with all the herbs and potions he's taken, one of them helped to slow down his aging.
  • Sabretooth an Avenger? This is almost getting crazy...almost. Victor Creed is another individual with an extended lifespan, due to his healing factor. What would he be doing working with this government-controlled Avengers? He did spend some time in Team X, a CIA covert ops unit. Obviously his name was in the rolodex of the President and/or Nick Fury when it came to forming this team.
  • Namora is the cousin of Namor. She worked with Ulysses Bloodstone in the 50s as a member of the Monster Hunters. She was also a member of Agents of Atlas which was formed by the FBI in 1958.

At first glance, it seems these individuals have nothing in common. After thinking about them, you can see they do have a few things in common. They all have had extended lifespans through natural or chemical means. Most of them can be considered mercenaries or have worked with a government agency in the 1950s. All of them would be expected to keep something like this a secret since they're not really the chatting type to discuss their past.

While this may be another case of retconning history, I have to say the idea of this group of characters working together is very interesting. They're not a group of individuals you'd want to go up against and the idea of them together makes you wonder what the heck the reason was for their formation. With the different personalities on this team, it makes sense that they wouldn't last long as an actual team. Most would be in it for the money and they simply wouldn't get along well with others.

I'm normally against secret histories being injected into what we already know and being expected to accept it. These individuals may be the first group to be called Avengers but, so far, it doesn't look like that will really affect the Avengers' history that we already know. These guys were brought together by the President and Nick Fury. Our Avengers sort of got together on their own and came up with the name themselves...unless that changes as well. Whatever the case, I do want to see this group of Avengers trying to work together and can't wait to see what the threat they have to face is.

Will this group of Avengers change the Avengers we've known all these years? I don't see that as the case but then again, you never know.

I dunno...
The more that the Mouse Of Ideas does, the less I find myself interested.  That, actually, goes the same for DC...

As a huge fan of Dum Dum, Ulysses Bloodstone, and especially specially Namora, I am rather happy and excited that a spotlight shall be shone from high above down directly onto them. Looking forward to this. Don't mind much about secret histories and all that. I'll wait and judge it later. When it actually does stuff.

What? None of those guys were Avengers or should be. Nike was a greek goddess and Namora >>> Nike. Jordan is a Bugs bunny character. Sabretooth eats bunnies for breakfast, and probably people too... Bikini well, Krakatoa >> Bikini... unless your thinking of the other type... then how your doin... PM me ^_~

Looks interesting but I think we have way too much retconning going on. I understand it but sometimes it is better to just weave the stories in the cracks vs. just make something up.

Kraven? Now I'm slightly interested.

Kraven fan huh? Cool.

Actually i just realized him and Sabes being on this team, makes it officially badass. Especially if it means they can say "STFU, we were here first" to Wolverine and Spidey being Avengers...

EXACTLY. :p

This looks like Team 7, by Wildstorm. Too many guns. Yeah, Marvel already has Team X. But the Avengers are the new X-Men, so...

Creed's got some serious man bosoms in that pic. But I digress. I'm fine with retcons if they're well thought out.

Edited by Midnight Monk

This is officially the most badass team to ever have been assembled, Kraven and Sabertooth on the same team make me giggle like a school girl. Someone better resurrect Sabertooth and gives these inglorious bastards a book pronto

Posted by Green ankh

i'd actully read a Avengers book with this line up.
Edited by Sobe Cin

As much as I love origins and retcons into stories. I guess thought would be, show them in a different light, they may be mercenaries now, but then, 1959. Kraven for could have been a whole different man, this exact thing could have set him down the road to become what he is today.
Posted by MrMazz

So the "first" Avengers where a bunch of Super Mercs not to bad kinda interesting actually O the banter between Kraven and Sabertooth

Posted by Nova`Prime`

I am going to be a stickler for detail and say if this picture is supposed to be from the '50s' then they messed up, it looks like Bloodstone is holding an HK PSG 1 which wasn't invented until the '70s'.

Okay rant over, I am not the biggest fan of retcons, unless they make sense, but I think Midnight Monk hit it right on the head, this team does have an Inglorious Bastards feel to it and not an Avengers feel.

Lame!!! Does everything in the Marvel Universe have to have existed since the beginning of time? First Shield now the Avengers. I believe that we will next find that the FF were in fact 4 cave people or that Spiderman was part of the Mayan people. The Defenders fought with Napoleon. Alpha flight fought off the Vikings when they landed on the New World. The Sorcerer Supreme sank Atlantis. The Romans invented the Super Soldier Serum and gave it to David so he could beat Goliath.
All this new Avengers story is going to do is much up the Marvel Universe even more. This should have simply stayed were it belonged, in What IF!!

There's a transformer in the Avengers?!
Cool ;]

Kraven, an Avenger?

Go on...

Pretty cool. The idea that there were secret super teams from the 50s is just flat out cool to me. Maybe they will final give some meaning to the term Avengers now too- I know it's old hat, but they really aren't avenging anything. Hank just kinda pulled the name out of his hat in Avengers #1.

Posted by ironshadow

Didn't the 1950's "Agents of Atlas" call themselves Avengers?

No no, it's not a Transformer, it's a car from Pixar's CARS now that Disney owns Marvel and will soon be putting out Pixar comics (instead of BOOM!).

This seems accurate

I'm really glad Bloodstone is getting some limelight.  I hope, though, that this recon doesn't take away Bloodstone as being a Monster Hunter.  Hopefully he and Namora are hinted at working together in the past in the team.

Agreed - especially in the area of attempting to retcon the Silver Age classics which are by and large responsible for the heroes we all enjoy today. Leave the SA alone + get on with new stories instead of messing up old ones.

I agree with the egenral sentiment, the more time pass the more I find Bendis decision lame. Not only because I don't like this whole conspiracies within conspiracies style (if they continue this way, Jaessica Drew triple agent stunt will become the norm), but also because they're retconning without mercy both the bad and the good.

On a more personal note, accoring to the continuity so far at the time the first Avengers tema was formed Fury was a mid-ranking agent of the C.I.A., the S.H.I.E.L.D. was formed some time later.

I wonder if this was the only shot they took in this pose.. I mean Namora's butt must be cramping up from sitting on that thin windshield..

now i know what we must do to end this insanity

 do it Wanda do it!!!!!!!

"Bendis........No More Retcons.

......did it work?

This is why I gave up on comics.

I wish Bendis would do some research for once and stop writting everything to suit his own big ego and lack of knowledge

bad deal

The concept is interesting. I like the team 7 feel. I dislike the cast.
Posted by Thunderscream

i disapprove. yeah, a bunch of these guys (and gal) have extended lifespans but leave the Avengers alone. this makes me about as mad as the whole Third Summers Brother fiasco....blah. To me, Vulcan doesn't exist....and Sabretooth is NOT one of the first "Avengers"

Posted by Green Skin

Why must they continually insert secret histories into continuity?   I really wish they could just go back to writing good stories that didn't rely on stupid hooks like this.  I admit the members of this team could make for a good read, but labeling them as the 1st avengers is just a cheap marketing hook.

So they've done the secret 1st Captain America, now the secret 1st Avengers.   It's only a matter of time until we see the secret 1st X-Men.

Posted by Jake Fury

Regardless of what they're called, this team looks awesome.

Posted by jayskee

very bad idea
Posted by Icemizer

Hope they dont run into these guys!!!
Posted by Lvenger

I dislike this. It's basically copying the movie idea and I've had enough of Bendis' retcons quite frankly.

Posted by tbpinkfloyd

This team is more like the first Secret Avengers.

I would be COMPLETELY ok with this if they didn't try to call themselves The Avengers. I'm willing to accept everything else and I'm VERY excited to see this team in action...but how could they be The Avengers before the name was originated by the Wasp? Better yet, why  do they NEED to be? Why can't they  just be another (awesome) gov't super team that we didn't know about?

QFT yea I agree this sounds like a proper cool team and i would prob check them out, but did they really have to be called the avengers? I mean I know its to bring them attention but is it really necessary?

I don't mind seeing new teams put together to tell stories, what I do mind is being told they are part of "history".  Especially if it "changes" said established history.
I think the best example I can think of off the top of my head is when the Crisis happened and DC "changed" the original line-up of the Justice League to explain how Wonder Woman was apparently not in the original line up because she did not exist or some such nonsense.

And how is Wolverine not on this team?

This is like DaVinci being on the first formation of SHIELD...

@G-Man:

So marvel comes up with an original idea to help fuel the stories. And everyone just seems to hate it. And some people seem do love it.

@ Everyone else...

Marvel, DC all of them, they write a story. We should be lucky there are still comic books. Our country is in bad shape, be happy with what we have. If you don't like they a story is going, don't read it. FInd something new, just don't complain about it.
